This article explores lessons learned from a decade of teaching an online course on the politics and psychology of hatred using a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) model. The authors illuminate course etiquette and a critical thinking model that incorporates SoTL into the ongoing fabric of the classroom. In addition, discussion centers on utilizing SoTL to satisfy colleagues concerned about "loss of content" in process oriented courses, and how to engage students in an ongoing, ever-changing, dialogue that can lead them to accept a more inclusive world view.

This publication is part of a series of self-instructional teacher training manuals designed to assist vocational-technical educators or industrial trainers to develop and implement competency-based vocational education (CBVE) programs in a school or industrial setting. The manual consists of the following sections: cover page that contains the task title, purpose, and information block; a statement of performance objectives, micro-performance objectives, learning activities, information sheets, activity sheets (self-checks), a written examination, a product/performance checklist, and references. This manual, which focuses on identifying teaching/learning strategies and management techniques to implement CBVE, covers the following topics: (1) identifying the role of the instructor as the manager of the learning environment; (2) exploring teaching/learning strategies; and (3) identifying management techniques to implement CBVE. Intended for use as an inservice tool for elementary school teachers and as an independent study tool, this guide provides a framework for designing language experiences in the classroom. Following an introduction, the first section of the guide deals with language as communication, as thought, and as a series of interrelated skills. Three questions language arts teachers must ask themselves are posed: whether they give receptive and expressive skills equal time, whether inner thought can occur without language, and whether teachers interrelate the language arts. The second section explores creating an environment for language, and is organized around the essential areas of language teaching. The section includes three language arts teaching frameworks, ways of providing for interaction between the different language arts, and two suggested models for enriching the context for language learning. The third section deals with designing language experiences in the areas of listening, oral expression, dramatization, written expression, literature as a base for critical reading, and a framework for teaching reading using children's literature. In addition to the resource lists in each skill area, a selected list of writings in language arts is included in a bibliography. (HTH)

The package presents a training approach for increasing test-taking skills of learning disabled (LD) and behaviorally disordered (BD) children along with a research study illustrating the approach's effectiveness with 92 LD or BD elementary students. The approach focuses on such strategies as attending to appropriate stimuli, marking answers carefully, using time well, and avoiding errors. The package presents lesson plans and student workbooks (with correct answers) on such topics as: (1) word study skills, including vocabulary, contractions, and syllables, and (2) reading comprehension. Each lesson presents a script for the trainer, ideas for remedial work, optional activity suggestions, and a review of previous lessons. (CL)

The third of three sequels to the booklet "Student Assessment," this booklet begins by describing and giving examples of three forms that essay-type questions can take: (1) unstructured-essay questions; (2) structured-essay questions; and (3) short-notes questions. Guidelines are then provided for deciding which type of question to use in a given situation and basic rules for writing essay-type questions are presented. Practical advice on how to evaluate and mark essay-type questions concludes the booklet. An annotated list of three items recommended for further reading is included. (MES)

As demands for online courses continue to increase and educational institutions rise to meet the needs of students, it is imperative faculty members are guided by the Seven Principles (Chickering and Gamson, 1986; Erhmann, 2003) of effective teaching as they develop online courses. This includes the judicious selection of distance learning tools to support quality teaching and learning experiences in online settings. Simulations delivered in traditional face-to-face courses have provided instructors valuable teachable moments and students with authentic learning experiences. When simulations are well designed in an online course using appropriate distance learning tools, teaching strategies can be thoughtfully developed and successfully delivered that produce quality student learning experiences.

Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) is a feedback process to collect midterm feedback from students. The process uses small focus group student interviews to identify strengths of the course, areas of concern, and suggestions to address concerns. The purpose of this paper is to shares experiences using on online format of Small Group Instructional Design (eSGID) to improve the teaching and learning process in three graduate courses. The authors will share specific examples, including the format of the eSGID process.

Arabic has a special characters and positions compare to Bahasa Indonesia as the mother tongue of students. These conditions are prospect to create joyful learning and teaching. Therefore, through the teaching and learning it is the opportunity to accelerate the process of understanding source language. This research was conducted in higher education of north Sulawesi in Manado. Non-participant observation and in-depth interview were conducted to collect data. Four months of research was studied from May to September of 2016. There was three circles of focus group discussion in validating data for triangulation. This article shows that the learning material consists of two categories language competency and religious teaching. This study illustrate that learning material was integrated to teaching of Islam. Religious material used to developed interactive substantial discussion and the medium of conversation is the Arabic. Additional activities and class hour was programed to enhance student chance to learn and practice outside formal classroom. There were some instructors were provided to maintain student training for couple weeks. This research discusses that in the field of Arabic language learning emphasize constructing learning opportunity environments, it is important which contents are included and it is also students' great interest how these contents are presented. Lecturers and instructors tried to provide instructional explanations. Furthermore, they communicate and demonstrate prior knowledge and student motivation in determining learning outcomes. The learning provides student opportunity to acquire conceptual knowledge and language competency. The article concludes by considering how embodied language material learning to religious content is the way to speed up two subject in one teaching for curriculum enhancement.

This study aims to understand teachers' perspectives of the use of Web 2.0 applications in learning and teaching and to explore the barriers to their use. The sample of this study involved teachers from primary, middle, and secondary schools in the Kharj region. The total sample consisted of 352 teachers. A quantitative survey instrument was utilised. Analyses of the resulting data were performed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of this study indicate that most of the participant teachers are familiar with Web 2.0 applications. However, their uses in education seem to be rarely mentioned. As they reported, the top barriers preventing them from the effective use of Web 2.0 applications in education are related to school level barriers, such as the large number of students in the classroom, the lack access to the Internet in schools, and the lack of a clear plan for the use of Web 2.0 in education. The findings also show that there is a significant difference in teacher responses about Web 2.0 applications in education in accordance with gender, educational levels, and teaching subjects. Finally, recommendations for teachers, educators and educational decision and policymakers are provided. Recommendations for further research are also offered.

This paper reports the results of a study involving over 2,000 college faculty members concerning the course goals they hope their students will achieve as a result of the material taught, the teaching technique, and the general intellectual environment in the classroom. The common interest of most instructors is the desire to develop the student's ability to think independently and critically and to be able to evaluate ideas, issues, and situations. Such goals are viewed as rewarding and involve broadening the student's intellectual vistas, teaching them to organize and clarify their thinking, helping them develop critical-thinking skills, teaching them how to analyze problems and follow logical approaches to situations, and encouraging them to discover and express their own ideas and thoughts. All disciplines, it is noted, contribute in their unique way to the student's personal growth, but no discipline alone provides all the answers to thinking and problem solving. The study concluded that no matter what the field or discipline, faculty who set personal development goals for their students stress multiple approaches to problem solving and the ability to evaluate, to think critically, and to be open to new possibilities. The observational study investigated the process of mainstreaming 32 learning handicapped children (grades 4-5) into regular education programs. Ss were enrolled in special day classes and mainstreamed for approximately one hour per day. Systematic observations focused on the handicapped student, nonhandicapped students, and the regular class teacher. Additional data were obtained from teacher questionnaires and interviews with students and teachers. Findings suggested that certain instructional practices are related to student academic involvement, student social interactions, and student attitudes toward the class. The types of instructional practices associated with student academic involvement reflected a direct teaching method in which the teacher presented information, questioned students, and provided supportive feedback. Handicapped students reported more positive attitudes toward the class when they were more academically involved in the instructional tasks of the classroom. Mainstreaming programs that facilitated students' academic involvement and social integration on the school playground were identified. It was also concluded that the effectiveness of a mainstreaming program can be facilitated when principals provided specific kinds of administrative support. Regular education teachers were able to incorporate the handicapped student into the class instruction without decreasing the amount of time spent in academic instruction, for when the handicapped student was in the regular education classroom, the teacher and low achieving students spent more time in academic tasks than when the handicapped student was not in the room. Contrary to teacher expectation research indicating that teachers shun the lower achieving students and spend more time with higher achieving students, the teachers in this sample interacted more often with the handicapped student than with high and medium achieving students. That news story was foreshadowed decades previously in the form of prophetic fiction wherein a pushy salesman, a cash-strapped scientist, and a clump of crabgrass accidentally merge forces with apocalyptic consequences. A triple-genre combo of science fiction, horror, and satire, Greener Than You Think is a forgotten classic that resonates beautifully with modern times. In 1921, American poet H.D. collected and published a selection of previously published poems by Marianne Moore. George Moore, an Irish writer involved with the Celtic Revival was influenced by the French Realists and particularly by the work of Émile Zola. Often considered as the first modern Irish novelist he became involved with Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats in the establishment of the Irish Literary Theatre. As part of his involvement with the Literary Revival, he wrote a set of short stories set in Ireland, drawn from his experiences growing up on his family’s estates in Co. Mayo. The stories were intended to be translated into Irish as a part of a new tradition of Gaelic Literature. <br> The stories were later published in English as The Untilled Field, in 1903. Moore was initially influenced by Ivan Turgenyev’s collection of short stories, Tales of a Sportsman and in turn they are thought to have been an influence on James Joyce’s Dubliners collection.
