The purpose of this essay is to bring out the unique role of Mathematics in providing a base to the diverse sciences which conform to its rigid structure. Of these the physical and economic sciences are so intimately linked with mathematics, that they have become almost a part of its structure under the generic title of Applied Mathematics. But with the progress of time, more and more branches of Science are getting quantified and coming under its ambit. And once a branch of science gets articulated into a mathematical structure, the process goes beyond mere classification and arrangement, and becomes eligible as a candidate for enjoying its predictive powers! Indeed it is this single property of Mathematics which gives it the capacity to predict the nature of evolution in time of the said branch of science. This has been well verified in the domain of physical sciences, but now even biological sciences are slowly feeling its strength, and the list is expanding.

17ERIC ED491722: The Effects Of Adult Literacy And Demographics On Eighth Grade Mathematics And Language Arts Literacy Scores

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of environmental conditions of adult literacy and demographics prevalent during infancy and early childhood on mathematics and language arts literacy scores on eighth grade achievement tests. This study collected published scores for eighth grade math and language literacy from public schools in Arkansas using the 2003 administration of the Arkansas Comprehensive Testing, Assessment, and Accountability Program (ACTAAP) and the adult literacy estimates for Arkansas counties as determined by the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) using indicators of population size, employment, education level, and race from the 1990 US Census. Data collected from NIFL reports, school enrollments, and grand means of scaled literacy and math scores were entered by county in SPSS (v. 12.0) software for analysis. Bivariate correlations were used to determine relationships between ACTAAP scores, adult literacy and demographic variables. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine relative influence of adult literacy, unemployment, dropout rates, and ethnicity on ACTAAP scores. Unemployment and underemployment among adults in 1990 were linked to low levels of education; dropout rates and unemployment were linked to racial minority status, reinforcing findings of the National Adult Literacy Study. Eighth grade test scores showed strong correlations to adult literacy especially at the lowest levels and moderate correlations to unemployment and dropout rates. The correlation between 2003 eighth grade scores and adult ethnicity in 1990 was stronger than for any other demographic or literacy variables, accounting for 57% of the influence on math scores and 42% of the influence on literacy scores. Early childhood experiences, as evidenced by the impact of conditions in 1990 have a significant impact on today's student achievement and programs should be developed to address literacy from a family or community perspective. This study examined the effectiveness of a Professional Development School (PDS) student teaching program within one university's teacher education program. The program is field-based during students' entire senior year, which is divided into a PDS semester and student teaching. During the PDS semester, students are placed in PDS sites around a large metropolitan area with diverse children and lower socioeconomic conditions. During student teaching, students are placed with mentor teachers at schools and monitored by university supervisors. They observe teaching and gradually take over classroom duties. Study participants were preservice teachers who had been placed at PDS sites and who were in the semester preceding student teaching. For two semesters, two groups of preservice teachers completed a pretest and posttest, the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument and a modified version of the same instrument, to measure self-efficacy beliefs in various subject areas. Results indicated that the PDSs were successful training sites for these students. PDS participants with low self-efficacy at the beginning of the semester made positive judgments about how well they could teach at the end of the semester. Students had opportunities for authentic performance, vicarious experiences, encouragement from others, and positive emotional tones. (Contains 32 references.) (SM)

This study examined the effectiveness of a Professional Development School (PDS) student teaching program within one university's teacher education program. The program is field-based during students' entire senior year, which is divided into a PDS semester and student teaching. During the PDS semester, students are placed in PDS sites around a large metropolitan area with diverse children and lower socioeconomic conditions. During student teaching, students are placed with mentor teachers at schools and monitored by university supervisors. They observe teaching and gradually take over classroom duties. Study participants were preservice teachers who had been placed at PDS sites and who were in the semester preceding student teaching. For two semesters, two groups of preservice teachers completed a pretest and posttest, the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument and a modified version of the same instrument, to measure self-efficacy beliefs in various subject areas. Results indicated that the PDSs were successful training sites for these students. PDS participants with low self-efficacy at the beginning of the semester made positive judgments about how well they could teach at the end of the semester. Students had opportunities for authentic performance, vicarious experiences, encouragement from others, and positive emotional tones. (Contains 32 references.) (SM)

Given the increasing number of English Language Learners (ELLs) in post-secondary environments (Roessingh & Douglas, 2012), educational practices such as availability of language support for mathematics should be assessed to ensure that all students' needs are met. To explore the effects of language on mathematics in ELLs, mathematical test items were presented in four language contexts: vocabulary knowledge, negation, preposition use, and atypical sentence structure. Sixty students enrolled in mathematics courses volunteered to complete the mathematics task. Results suggest that math items falling into each of the four language contexts disadvantage ELLs, highlighting that the needs of ELLs should be considered at all levels, from classroom practices to educational policy.

This report uses longitudinal data to examine the scores of public-school language-minority students on a mathematics assessment in 1st grade, and gains in their scores between 1st and 5th grades. Scores are reported by student race/ethnicity, poverty status, and maternal education. Data are drawn from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K), using data from spring 2000 (when most of the children were in 1st grade) and spring 2004 (when most of the children were in 5th grade) and is restricted to children who were first-time kindergartners in 1998-1999 and who attended public school in 2000 and 2004. Students are categorized by language background and English language proficiency into three groups: (1) language-minority, English Proficient students; (2) language-minority, English Language Learners; and (3) students whose primary home language is English. The grouping of language-minority students into either English Proficient or English Language Learners is based on their score on a direct measure of oral English language proficiency in the fall of their kindergarten year. Of first-time public school kindergarten students in 1998-1999, approximately 12 percent were language-minority students, with an almost even split between English Proficient students and English Language Learners. Approximately half of all English Language Learners lived in poverty and had a mother with less than a high school education. Overall, language-minority students scored lower on a 1st-grade mathematics assessment than did students whose primary home language was English. English Language Learners generally scored lower than English Proficient students and students whose primary home language was English. This was true whether students lived at or above the poverty threshold. Between 1st and 5th grades, there was no measurable difference in gain scores on the mathematics assessment among the three language groups. However, differences within and between the groups were found by the reported scoring characteristics of race/ethnicity, poverty status, and maternal education. Of first-time public school kindergarten students in 1998-1999, approximately 12 percent were language-minority students, with an almost even split between English Proficient students and English Language Learners. Approximately half of all English Language Learners lived in poverty and had a mother with less than a high school education. Overall, language-minority students scored lower on a 1st-grade mathematics assessment than did students whose primary home language was English. English Language Learners generally scored lower than English Proficient students and students whose primary home language was English. Differential item functioning (DIF) occurs when the responses of students with approximately equal ability differ systematically based on their group membership. Idaho contracted with the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) to provide the Idaho Standards Achievement Tests of reading, language arts and mathematics at grades 4, 8 and 10. The tests included items in the NWEA Rasch-calibrated item bank and items written by Idaho teachers that were equated to the item bank metric. NWEA provided a random sample of data representing about half of the students taking part in the spring 2003 assessment. This study screened for gender-based (female-male) and ethnic-based (Hispanic-White) DIF. The Simultaneous Item Bias Test (SIBTEST) and the Mantel-Haenszel Chi Square Test were used to detect statistically significant DIF. The Bonferonni correction was employed to control for Type I error. Effect size procedures were used to determine whether statistical differences were large enough to have practical meaning. DIF findings from a NWEA analysis of spring 2003 test results were also noted. The proportion of items exhibiting gender-based DIF ranged from seven percent for the Grade 4 reading test to 37 percent for the Grade 10 mathematics test. The proportion of items exhibiting ethnic-based DIF ranged from seven percent for the Grade 8 mathematics test to 19 percent for the Grade 4 tests of reading and language arts. The study recommended that items exhibiting DIF be reviewed by curriculum specialists before further use, that the impact of the high occurrence of DIF on the ability to accurately interpret the spring 2003 student scores be examined, and that language requiring DIF analyses on all items used in future test administrations be added to the contract with the test developer.

The recent reform act for the Italian upper secondary school has ruled the gradual introduction, from the 2012-2013 school year onwards, of the CLIL (content and language integrated learning) methodology in the "Licei" and technical schools. While CLIL clearly offers students great opportunities for developing their skills and abilities in a foreign language, used as the medium of instruction, the impact of CLIL on the teaching/learning process, for the non-language subject contents, still needs to be investigated. The paper focuses on the training of mathematics CLIL teachers. Then, we try to identify the areas of competence that are necessary for CLIL teachers in general and mathematics CLIL teachers in particular. Our analysis is supported by the outcomes from a questionnaire. In the analysis, we make mainly use of the text linguistic perspective. (Contains 1 figure.)

This report compares and contrasts the evaluation methods and findings of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Council for Basic Education (CBE), and the Fordham Foundation reviews of state English language arts and mathematics content standards. It states that the reviews found that state content standards vary greatly in how they are organized, in the levels of detail and specificity of their content prescriptions, and in the clarity of their expression. According to the report, although a number of the states' standards were found to be of exemplary quality and could be used as models, an "unacceptably large number" of state content standards were judged to be of inadequate quality. The report cites the average ratings on the 0 to 4 scale given by each rating group for English language arts and for mathematics. It finds considerable discrepancy in the reviewers' ranking of the states: there was considerable disagreement among the reviewers about which states had high quality and which states had low quality content standards. The report states that the reviewers used different criteria, defining the qualities they used for evaluation and applying their evaluation criteria differently. School districts altered instructional delivery from solely in-person to a combined virtual/in-person model in the 2020-2021 school year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Houston Independent School District (HISD) offered in-person and virtual instruction to early learners at school-based programs (SBP), early childhood centers (ECC), and charter/magnet schools. The analyses were conducted across the three campus types (SBP, ECC, and charter/magnet). Descriptive analyses were performed using enrollment trends, teachers' and parents' perceptions of HISDs virtual prekindergarten program compared to charter and magnet schools, and student performance. Students' academic growth was measured using beginning-of-year and end-of-year academic performance on the CIRCLE language and literacy and mathematics assessments in the 2020-2021 school year. The analysis showed a decrease of 28.4 percentage points in the number of prekindergarten students in the district. Of those enrolled in the prekindergarten program, 50.1 percent were learning in person, 28.7 percent learned virtually, and 21.2 percent alternated between virtual and in-person. Teachers with prior experience had higher mean ratings for using technology for virtual instruction and supporting parents with accessing virtual learning tools. A higher percentage of teachers at ECCs reported using technology in the classrooms before the implementation of the virtual learning model (96.2%) compared to teachers at SBPs (87.8%) and charter/magnet schools (81.4%). Parents' and teachers' perceptions of students' academic progress in the 2020-2021 school year varied by campus type. A lower proportion of teachers at ECCs reported a high confidence level that their students would make academic progress (41.2%) compared to ECCs (52.2%) and charter/magnet schools (63.6%). This study is expected to determine the impact of a program based on the cooperative learning methodology. This, in comparison to a traditional learning situation in both mathematics and language achievement. The study was carried out on a group of fourth grade students of primary school. In addition, it tried to find the differential impact according to the cognitive style in the field dependence-independence dimension. This work was carried out with 76 students of the Colegio José Martí I.E.D. (Bogotá--Colombia) ranging from 8-12 years of age. The control group received a traditional teaching methodology and the experimental group received the cooperative learning program, composed of 35 sessions (from July to November 2009). All the participants were tested in mathematics and language performance, before and after the intervention. All of them were tested in cognitive style as well. The results suggested that the cooperative learning methodology benefited importantly the academic achievement of the students in mathematics in contrast to the competitive and individualist situations. The results also suggested that the three cognitive style groups were positively affected from the cooperative learning situation. These results were not found in the language area.

It is commonly held that numbers and number expressions constitute the first universal language independent of any natural language. No doubt has been cast on the notion that mother tongue differences make no difference in learning mathematics. Because of its "universal" character, mathematics was chosen as the subject to be investigated in the IEA International Study of Educational Achievement. A defect in this study, however, is the failure to take into account the cultural background of the participating countries. For example, the mathematical expression "2 x 3," is believed by IEA examiners to express an identical concept universally. However, it does not. In English, it generally means "2 times 3," namely "3 + 3." In Japan, it means "2 no 3 bai," or "2 + 2 + 2." That is, the positions of the multiplier and the multiplicand are reversed, because there is no equivalent way of expressing "A times B" in Japanese. When the number system, multiplication tables and mathematical expressions are thus considered, mathematics remains an artificial language not fully independent of natural languages, rather than the ideal medium modern science is searching for. The results of the IEA test will reflect not only the degree of achievement in mathematics, but also features of the examinee's own language and culture as a background. (Author/CLK)

The "No Child Left Behind" Act (2002) requires that all students have access to the general curriculum at their designated grade level. Federal guidance received from the US Department of Education noted that these extended standards are intended only for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. A key goal is to assure that the extended standards represent both the content standards and the range of cognitive skills of all students. A group of approximately 50 regular education teachers, special education teachers, parents, university personnel, school administrators and system administrators convened with staff of the five divisions in three sessions between September 2005, and January 2006, to further delineate the extensions at three entry points. These three entry points were defined as symbolic, early symbolic and pre-symbolic (see Behaviors Demonstrated at Entry Points). The extended standards represent an effort to assure a balance of functional and academic skills within the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Also, a goal of the extended standards is to provide concepts at a level accessible to the student within a grade-level context. It is critical that the IEP of each student continues to address both academic skills and functional skills necessary to assure positive school and adult outcomes. The intent is to provide the student what he needs to succeed through the IEP and instruction.

A study was undertaken to examine psychometric properties of "La Prueba Riverside de Realizacion en Espanol" (PRRE) and the "Spanish Assessment of Basic Education" (SABE) when administered to a sample of limited-English-proficient students, grades 1 through 8. Spanish-language versions of both tests were used for the study. Subjects included a total of 2,634 students who were enrolled in 19 elementary schools in Chicago and who participated in a Spanish bilingual education program. The instruments, both of which include reading and mathematics subtests, were administered by bilingual teachers who received inservice training to prepare them for their part in the study. In addition to analyses of test results, questionnaire data from participating teachers were assessed. The teacher questionnaire covered seven areas--item difficulty, test instructions, test fit with the curriculum, language correctness and appropriateness, racial or ethnic test bias, print size and illustrations, and cultural relevance of items. Results indicate that the PRRE and SABE are acceptable for the population assessed. The instruments are essentially similar in terms of psychometric properties and in teachers' ratings of test characteristics. Nine data tables are included. (TJH)

45ERIC ED420939: Meeting The Needs Of The Gifted Student In Language Arts And Mathematics: An Evaluative Exploration.

This study evaluated the mathematics and reading/language arts curriculum for grades 6 through 8 in an Illinois private school for gifted students. Emphasis was on determining whether the current curriculum meets the needs of these students and whether students are challenged to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Evaluation was within the framework of three models of gifted education: the content mastery model, the concept based model, and the process/product model. The qualitative research methodology employed involved interviews with five teachers and 15 students in each of the three grades. In addition, reading/language arts and mathematics classes were observed at least twice for each grade. The study found that, overall, the mathematics and language arts curricula are comprehensive, effective, challenging, creative, and meet the needs of students. The curriculum focuses on the development of the thinking process, is integrative, and allows for independent study and projects. Both the language arts and mathematics curricula incorporate the content mastery and concept based model. In addition, the mathematics curriculum fosters the process/product model. This paper summarizes how mentalists have employed the concepts of recreating and restructuring to explain how children and adults acquire a second language and to show how the context of these terms is integrated within the content area of mathematics. The mentalist school of thought towards restructuring and recreating was divided into two camps: those who focus on grammar form and those who focus on semiotics or meaning. This paper compares how each camp of followers define and apply these concepts to design classroom acquisition contexts to facilitate content learning. Specific theories examined include those of Selinker (1972), and Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). (Author/AIM)

The paper also offers evidence of correspondence between these two types of standards and offers a methodology for states to use. It reports on the broad analysis used to update the WIDA ELD Standards Framework to ensure it could be applied flexibly across the consortium. SEA correspondence mappings are specific to individual SEAs. As federal law and peer review indicate the final responsibility for standards lies with states, WIDA is able to offer this technical paper as a tool to support the state correspondence process.
