Unfortunately, much of the research devoted to Logo and problem solving has not supported the claim that Logo provides an environment in which children will develop problem solving skills, but the literature suggests that direct instruction and mediated Logo programming practice can result in the acquisition and transfer of certain problem solving abilities. The research reported in this paper was designed to test such an hypothesis by differentiating between interventions combining direct instruction and mediated practice and discovery learning approaches, and with assessing the importance of programming within that model. Subjects were 100 students in the fourth through the sixth grades who had all had at least one year (30 hours) of prior experience programming in Logo. All subjects were pretested on their ability to solve problems requiring the use of each of the five problem solving strategies under investigation, and randomly assigned by grade to one of three treatment conditions--a Logo graphics condition, a cut-paper manipulative condition, or a discovery learning, Logo projects condition. Results reveal that the model can indeed support the acquisition and transfer of four problem solving strategies--subgoals formation, forward chaining, systematic trial and error, and analogy--whereas neither discovery learning in a Logo environment nor direct instruction with concrete manipulatives practice can accomplish that. Indications are that the model can support the teaching and learning of alternative representation strategies as well. The findings support claims for the efficacy of Logo as a medium conducive to the teaching and learning of problem solving, and argue for the use of knowledge-based instructional design and computing environments in the creation of problem solving interventions. Interactions were measured using a variety of tests. Findings do not indicate stability of interaction patterns in the sense that certain personality variables consistently interacted with the two discussion styles investigated. Using the metaphoric story device of two tribes, one that builds their culture around words and the other which depends primarily on visual perception, this paper suggests a distinctive mental paradigm at work within the society of artists, who pursue visual literacy through graphic ideation. The author discusses his education in art and his discovery of "memes," the smallest recognizable pieces of information, and notes that holistic memes have given him a perception of the ethical values and biases of the tribe of the vision. Discussion then moves to the differences between the thinking of visual artists and those without artistic inclinations, as identified by neuropsychologists and psychologists. Artists, who are more aware of the abstract structures underlying visual perception, are better able to control and manipulate the viso-spatial abstract structure of their visions for communicative and creative purposes. Visual artists of acknowledged creativity have also been found to demonstrate much greater use of allusive--or loose categorical--thinking than non-artists. Research has suggested that the superimposition of separate entities and phenomena in the same space within the human brain is the triggering mechanism for creative thought, or homospatial thinking. Psychomorphology holds that the mind (psycho) and the world of visual forms (morphology) are intimately and integrally entwined. As illustrated in the author's abstract layered-form and shaped canvas paintings, flexibility and fluency are necessary to effectively develop effective visual stimuli; this design fluency has been identified with the right hemisphere of the brain. Visual literacy requires a deepening of visual understanding achieved through visual experience in addition to the word based study of human perception. (Contains 19 references.) (AEF)

One such limitation is that students are not given an opportunity to express preferences for instructional styles. Description is given of the content and development of an instrument designed to provide educators with information on how students perceive (1) their own need for structure, and (2) the degree to which teacher-student matches and mismatches cause a fluctuating level of classroom state anxiety affecting student learning. The results of data collection utilizing the instrument in a school setting are reported, with a discussion of how teachers might use this data to better understand their students. (Author/KP)

The purpose of this study was to identify factors responsible for the perceived decline in attitudes toward science observed in an intervention study designed to enhance scientific literacy. The literacy study focuses on a new freshman course in an urban Catholic high school. Negative attitudes toward science were found to be related to the demand characteristics of the scientific literacy course, which emphasized problem solving. Although the course was successful in teaching literacy skills and had a positive effect on general cognitive abilities, there was a sharp decline in attitude toward science between the beginning and end of the course. Factors related to attitude decline are discussed in terms of self-concept, mastery, locus of control and motivation. (TW)

Reflective art viewing counters negative thinking dispositions of hasty, narrow, fuzzy, and sprawling thought by cultivating four habits: (1) taking time to look; (2) looking and thinking broadly; (3) thinking clearly and deeply; and (4) organizing thinking and looking. Understanding the student learning experience is essential if Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are to provide an education for the 21st century. This study investigated students' perspectives on their learning experiences and offered undergraduates a chance to influence the way academics think about learning and teaching. Participants were drawn from two UK HEIs and a semi structured focus group approach was adopted. A total of nine focus groups consisting of 3-7 participants were drawn from across all Sport degree year groups in both institutions. Assessment, pedagogy and teacher characteristics emerged as primary concerns across both institutions. Assessment was appreciated by all students as key to their learning but was exposed as being overly traditional and rigid in its application. Students were unanimous in their support for small group pedagogies, rejecting traditional powerpoint dominated lecturing styles. The emphasis on the behaviour of, and delivery by, tutors was noteworthy. Students appraised the development of their academic skills and confidence, linking these to motivation, knowledge, self-awareness and critical reflection. In doing so they understood the impact of inconsistencies in tutors' teaching practices. The onus is on every tutor to combine imaginative assessment with dynamic and relational experiences in order to provide a strong foundation for flexible, reflective and creative graduates.

Given the current striving for "sustainability" and the corresponding paradigms shift in science, technology, R&D, environment perception, economy and politics; e.g., from unlimited growth-to-sustainable development, correction-to-prevention and passive consumption of "goods", culture and education--to active participation, primarily in the science-technology-environment-society-economy-policy (S-T-E-S-E-P) context, the corresponding paradigms shift, at all levels of education is unavoidable. This requires a paradigm shift in conceptualization, thinking, and research in science education, particularly concerning the science-technology-environment-society (STES) interfaces. Consequently, "STES literacy" requires the development of students' evaluative system thinking and transfer capabilities in this context via the corresponding innovative higher-order cognitive skills (HOCS)-promoting teaching assessment and learning strategies; meaning a shift, within different multicultural contexts, from the currently dominating lower-order cognitive skills (LOCS) algorithmic "teaching-to-know", to HOCS-promoting "learning-to-think", typified by students' capabilities of "critical evaluative system thinking" and "decision-making for problem solving and transfer". This should be consonant with innovative, interdisciplinary "generic, contextually bound", research-based teaching strategies and assessment methodologies leading to "HOCS learning". Our longitudinal research findings and application of this HOCS-promoting science education practice suggest that, although the road to STES literacy for sustainability is rocky, it is educationally doable and, therefore, attainable. This paper argues that educators interested in sustainability should look to complexity science for guiding principles. When we view our classrooms and campuses as living, dynamic ecologies, we can, as insiders, make sense of what might otherwise seem chaotic or meaningless. This perspective enables us not only to describe and explain what is happening around us, but also to use our findings to influence emerging patterns across our classrooms, campuses, or our larger communities. We suggest that educators use a Look, Think, Act cycle recommended by Professor Ernie Stringer to encourage and support sustainable school reform.

Ted was born in Indianapolis, IN, and was raised by his grandmother. When he was 13 he moved to Manhattan Beach, CA, where he lived with his aunt and uncle. Having promised his aunt he would not enlist until he was 19, Ted attended Oregon State College for one semester in 1942. On his 19th birthday Ted enlisted in the Marine Air Corps but he failed the eye test. He returned to California to take eye exercises. On March 15, 1943, Ted entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew missions in India and China in support of the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals for his service, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the war, Mr. Stevens completed degrees at UCLA and Harvard Law School. In 1950 he joined a law firm in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife Ann Cherrington. In 1952 Mr. Stevens accepted a position with Combs and Clasby, a law firm in Fairbanks. Later, in 1953 he became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks. During President Eisenhower's administration, he took a job with the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked with many other Alaskans to push for Alaska statehood and became the Chief Legal Officer (the Solicitor) of Interior. In 1961 Ted returned to Alaska to practice law in Anchorage in the new State of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964. In his second term, Mr. Stevens became the House majority leader. Mr. Stevens was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-Governor Walter J. Hickel to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator E.L. (Bob) Bartlett. Two years later in 1970, Alaskans chose Senator Stevens to finish that term. He was re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. During his service in the Senate, Senator Stevens was instrumental in the passage of the legislation settling Alaska Native land claims, the authorization of the Trans- Alaska Pipeline, transfer of the Alaska Railroad to the State, creating the essential air service program and bypass mail service. He has worked tirelessly to improve health care, communications, and transportation for Alaskans. Ted fought to enact the 200 mile limit to protect Alaska's fisheries. He authored the American Fisheries Act to reduce foreign ownership of Alaska's fisheries and created the Community Development Quota Program to promote economic development in Western Alaska. Ted was a strong supporter of development of Alaska's resources including construction of a gas pipeline and opening the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Range to oil and gas exploration. He was a national leader on pension reform, women in sports, national security and defense. The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act created the U.S. Olympic Committee. The longest serving member of Alaska's congressional delegation, Senator Stevens had more years of service than any other Republican in the U.S. Senate and was the longest serving Senator in the history of the Republican Party. Having served for 4 years as the Senate's President pro tempore, the Presiding Officer in the absence of the Vice President, Senator Stevens also served as the Senate's President pro tempore emeritus; vice chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; cochairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee; and ranking member of the Disaster Recovery Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee. He was married to the former Catherine Bittner, a fourth generation Alaskan and lawyer. He has 6 children and 11 grandchildren. His first wife, Ann Cherrington Stevens, was killed in a 1978 airplane crash at the Anchorage Airport. On August 9, 2010, Senator Stevens was among five people who died in an airplane crash north of Dillingham, AK, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. ? Ted was born in Indianapolis, IN, and was raised by his grandmother. When he was 13 he moved to Manhattan Beach, CA, where he lived with his aunt and uncle. Having promised his aunt he would not enlist until he was 19, Ted attended Oregon State College for one semester in 1942. On his 19th birthday Ted enlisted in the Marine Air Corps but he failed the eye test. He returned to California to take eye exercises. On March 15, 1943, Ted entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew missions in India and China in support of the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals for his service, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the war, Mr. Stevens completed degrees at UCLA and Harvard Law School. In 1950 he joined a law firm in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife Ann Cherrington. In 1952 Mr. Stevens accepted a position with Combs and Clasby, a law firm in Fairbanks. Later, in 1953 he became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks. During President Eisenhower's administration, he took a job with the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked with many other Alaskans to push for Alaska statehood and became the Chief Legal Officer (the Solicitor) of Interior. In 1961 Ted returned to Alaska to practice law in Anchorage in the new State of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964. In his second term, Mr. Stevens became the House majority leader. Mr. Stevens was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-Governor Walter J. Hickel to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator E.L. (Bob) Bartlett. Two years later in 1970, Alaskans chose Senator Stevens to finish that term. He was re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. During his service in the Senate, Senator Stevens was instrumental in the passage of the legislation settling Alaska Native land claims, the authorization of the Trans- Alaska Pipeline, transfer of the Alaska Railroad to the State, creating the essential air service program and bypass mail service. He has worked tirelessly to improve health care, communications, and transportation for Alaskans. Ted fought to enact the 200 mile limit to protect Alaska's fisheries. He authored the American Fisheries Act to reduce foreign ownership of Alaska's fisheries and created the Community Development Quota Program to promote economic development in Western Alaska. Ted was a strong supporter of development of Alaska's resources including construction of a gas pipeline and opening the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Range to oil and gas exploration. He was a national leader on pension reform, women in sports, national security and defense. The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act created the U.S. Olympic Committee. The longest serving member of Alaska's congressional delegation, Senator Stevens had more years of service than any other Republican in the U.S. Senate and was the longest serving Senator in the history of the Republican Party. Having served for 4 years as the Senate's President pro tempore, the Presiding Officer in the absence of the Vice President, Senator Stevens also served as the Senate's President pro tempore emeritus; vice chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; cochairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee; and ranking member of the Disaster Recovery Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee. He was married to the former Catherine Bittner, a fourth generation Alaskan and lawyer. He has 6 children and 11 grandchildren. His first wife, Ann Cherrington Stevens, was killed in a 1978 airplane crash at the Anchorage Airport. On August 9, 2010, Senator Stevens was among five people who died in an airplane crash north of Dillingham, AK, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. ? Ted helped secure statehood for his beloved Alaska and never stopped fighting for the people of the Pioneer State for over 40 years as its senior Senator. Our thoughts are with Ted's wife Catherine and the entire Stevens family and all of those who lost their lives and were injured in this week's sad accident. Mr. President, I want to personally add the thoughts of Senator Reid. I spoke with him last night. We spoke about Senator Stevens and remembered him fondly. Senator Reid particularly noted to me one of his prize possessions was a Hulk tie that Senator Stevens had given him, and he proudly still has it with him. Mr. McCONNELL. Mr. President, in the history of our country, no one man has done more for one State than Ted Stevens. His commitment to the people of Alaska and his Nation spanned decades, and he left a lasting mark on both. He was a national leader on pension reform, women in sports, national security and defense. The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act created the U.S. Olympic Committee. Ted was born in Indianapolis, IN, and was raised by his grandmother. When he was 13 he moved to Manhattan Beach, CA, where he lived with his aunt and uncle. Having promised his aunt he would not enlist until he was 19, Ted attended Oregon State College for one semester in 1942. On his 19th birthday Ted enlisted in the Marine Air Corps but he failed the eye test. He returned to California to take eye exercises. On March 15, 1943, Ted entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew missions in India and China in support of the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals for his service, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the war, Mr. Stevens completed degrees at UCLA and Harvard Law School. In 1950 he joined a law firm in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife Ann Cherrington. In 1952 Mr. Stevens accepted a position with Combs and Clasby, a law firm in Fairbanks. Later, in 1953 he became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks. During President Eisenhower's administration, he took a job with the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked with many other Alaskans to push for Alaska statehood and became the Chief Legal Officer (the Solicitor) of Interior. In 1961 Ted returned to Alaska to practice law in Anchorage in the new State of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964. In his second term, Mr. Stevens became the House majority leader. Mr. Stevens was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-Governor Walter J. Hickel to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator E.L. (Bob) Bartlett. Two years later in 1970, Alaskans chose Senator Stevens to finish that term. He was re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. During his service in the Senate, Senator Stevens was instrumental in the passage of the legislation settling Alaska Native land claims, the authorization of the Trans- Alaska Pipeline, transfer of the Alaska Railroad to the State, creating the essential air service program and bypass mail service. He has worked tirelessly to improve health care, communications, and transportation for Alaskans. Ted fought to enact the 200 mile limit to protect Alaska's fisheries. Climate change can be regarded as one of the key topics of sustainable development where public awareness and education are crucial. In the field of education, Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) have raised remarkable attention throughout the last decade as their initial objective is to provide massive open online education for everyone. This article aims to explore the impact of MOOCs on learning about climate change. This is necessary in order to evaluate whether MOOCs can make a substantial contribution to lifelong learning about sustainable development for a wider audience. We therefore present findings from self-assessment questionnaires of participants from two climate change MOOCs provided by two-distance learning universities in Germany and Portugal. Both MOOCs aimed at imparting to the participants the competencies to better understand the topic of climate change. The objective of the survey was a competency-based evaluation to review which learning outcomes have been achieved. The results indicate that taking part in either of the MOOCs increased the participants’ competencies to critically engage in the climate change debate. MOOCs are able to convey certain learning outcomes to the students and thus can contribute to climate change literacy. For further research, we recommend a more differentiated view on MOOCs and the learning opportunities for participants. Options for potential improvement are to think of better ways of how to integrate MOOCs into climate change education or to consider possibilities to increase the attractiveness of MOOCs for instance by using innovative formats to overcome the barriers between formal and informal learning.

One place where future history teachers might gain such cognitive practice is in history courses designed to focus on the ideas and methods of historians. A study focused on teaching future history teachers how to think about history. A course, "Philosophy and Methods of Historical Inquiry," (taught by a historian) was chosen as the site for examining the problem. The study examined the impact of the course on the historical thinking of three preservice teachers enrolled in the course and their view of how they will teach history in their future classrooms. A naturalistic methodology captured descriptions regarding student beliefs as they evolved during the semester and the relationship of those beliefs with the classroom experience. Data were gathered through interviews, participant observation of the class, and document analysis. Four themes evolved from the interviews and reflected commonalities across the talk of the preservice teachers. The themes capture the three teachers' thoughts about history before the course and changes in their thinking that took place during the course. By psychologizing historical writing, the three teachers were able to reconstruct their view of teaching. Findings reinforce the need for strong links among education departments and departments engaged in conveying the discipline. Attached are teacher interviews. (Contains 23 references.) (BT)
