1Deep Learning Of FMRI Big Data: A Novel Approach To Subject-transfer Decoding

By

As a technology to read brain states from measurable brain activities, brain decoding are widely applied in industries and medical sciences. In spite of high demands in these applications for a universal decoder that can be applied to all individuals simultaneously, large variation in brain activities across individuals has limited the scope of many studies to the development of individual-specific decoders. In this study, we used deep neural network (DNN), a nonlinear hierarchical model, to construct a subject-transfer decoder. Our decoder is the first successful DNN-based subject-transfer decoder. When applied to a large-scale functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) database, our DNN-based decoder achieved higher decoding accuracy than other baseline methods, including support vector machine (SVM). In order to analyze the knowledge acquired by this decoder, we applied principal sensitivity analysis (PSA) to the decoder and visualized the discriminative features that are common to all subjects in the dataset. Our PSA successfully visualized the subject-independent features contributing to the subject-transferability of the trained decoder.

2Drug Analyser Using Neural Networks With The Use Of Transfer Learning Techniques

By

Resnet architecture was used to create a user-friendly drug analyser web application. This architecture is a transfer learning method that was used as a convolutional neural network in this case, and it will be trained on a collection of images that contain labels for each drug individually. The activation functions used within these neural networks are ReLU (Rectified Linear Unit) and softmax activation functions, as well as categorical cross-entropy as a loss function. Stochastic gradient descent (adam optimizer) was used to change the weights for each input on each epoch. Finally, after receiving a traditional model, it was merged with a web application API such as flask in Python. After that, the web application was deployed to cloud platforms such as Heroku.

3ERIC ED062463: Emotional Factors In The Learning And Nonspecific Transfer Of White And Black Students.

By

This research contrasts the learning effects of an affective dimension of meaningfulness with the word-quality of consonant-vowel-consonant trigrams. Subject rated trigrams for both "association value"--having word-quality versus lacking word-quality--and "reinforcement value"--liking versus disliking the trigram regardless of word quality. Paired associates lists were then constructed in which association value and reinforcement value were counterbalanced. Subjects learned two different lists. Experiment I established that the order of positive transfer across lists (best to poorest improvement) was as follows: dislike to liked, like to liked, disliked to disliked, and liked to disliked. Association value meaningfulness failed to produce interlist effects. Experiment II found that the left-hand member of a paired-associate contributed more to nonspecific transfer than the right-hand member. Experiment III found that the learning style of whites is relatively more along an association value than a response value dimension, whereas blacks reflected the opposite tendency. It was concluded that (1) affective factors play a greater role than hitherto acknowledged in theories of human verbal learning and (2) blacks may be socio-culturally different in style of learning than whites, thereby contributing to much of the confusion regarding relative capacity between races. 6DTIC ADA470405: Measuring The Level Of Transfer Learning By An AP Physics Problem-Solver

By

Transfer learning is the ability of an agent to apply knowledge learned in previous tasks to new problems or domains. We approach this problem by focusing on model formulation, i.e., how to move from the unruly, broad set of concepts used in everyday life to a concise, formal vocabulary of abstractions that can be used effectively for problem solving. This paper describes how the Companions cognitive architecture uses analogical model formulation to learn to solve AP Physics problems. Our system starts with some basic mathematical skills, a broad common sense ontology, and some qualitative mechanics, but no equations. Our system uses worked solutions to learn how to use equations and modeling assumptions to solve AP Physics problems. We show that this process of analogical model formulation can facilitate learning over a range of types of transfer, in an experiment administered by the Educational Testing Service.

7Active And Transfer Learning Of Grasps By Sampling From Demonstration

By

We guess humans start acquiring grasping skills as early as at the infant stage by virtue of two key processes. First, infants attempt to learn grasps for known objects by imitating humans. Secondly, knowledge acquired during this process is reused in learning to grasp novel objects. We argue that these processes of active and transfer learning boil down to a random search of grasps on an object, suitably biased by prior experience. In this paper we introduce active learning of grasps for known objects as well as transfer learning of grasps for novel objects grounded on kernel adaptive, mode-hopping Markov Chain Monte Carlo. Our experiments show promising applicability of our proposed learning methods.

9A Study On Detection Of COVID-19 In Lung CT Images Using Transfer Learning With Resnet Pre-Trained Model

By

COVID-19 has impacted the lives of each and every person in the world. Diagnosis of COVID-19 using imaging systems can be integrated with the standard Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTPCR) test to perform the diagnosis more accurately. In this paper, transfer learning based method using a pre-trained deep neural network model viz., ResNet is proposed to classify COVID-19 computed tomography (CT) lung images. The pre-trained model is fine-tuned in order to make it learn the features specific to COVID-19 CT lung images. The proposed method is compared with the methods available in the literature. The results show that the proposed method is comparable to the existing methods.

10Novel Entropy-based Style Transfer Of The Object In The Content Image Using Deep Learning

By

Recently neural style transfer (NST) has drawn a lot of interest of researchers, with notable advancements in color representation, texture, speed, and image quality. While previous studies focused on transferring artistic style across entire content images, a new approach proposes to transfer style specifically to objects within the content image based on the style image and maintain photorealism. Recent techniques have produced intriguing creative effects, but often only work with artificial effects, leaving real flaws visible in photographs used as references for styles. The suggested approach employs a two-dimensional wavelet transform (WT) to achieve style transfer by adjusting image structure with high-pass and low pass filters (LPF). Preserving the information content and numerical attributes of VGGNet19 through WT-based style transfer using the db5 WT at level 5, we can achieve a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) value of up to 96.76725. The qualitative result of the proposed methodology is compared with other existing algorithm. Also, the time complexity of the proposed methodology on different hardware platforms has been calculated and presented in the paper. The proposed methodology able to maintains appealing and precise quality of resultant image.

11Transfer Of Learning In Sensorimotor Synchronization

By

While adult humans are generally highly adept at synchronizing movements with simple auditory rhythms, our rhythmical abilities are neither perfectly accurate nor unbiased. For instance, 'complex' rhythms composed of intervals that relate in duration by ratios other than 1:2 or 1:3 appear to be systematically distorted in synchronization and production. While this distortion may be partly the result of experience-expectant limits in temporal perception or sensorimotor ability, the specific pattern and extent of distortion appears to be malleable, and open to practice or specific experience. Recent work has demonstrated that performance on complex rhythm sensorimotor performance can be rapidly improved over the course of a short practice session. Such improvements, and the distortion of complex rhythms has frequently been attributed largely to perceptual processes, rather than motor or sensorimotor processes, as similar patterns of distortion have been found in perceptual and motor tasks. In this study, we evaluate the extent to which rapid improvements in synchronization with a complex rhythm (3:4) are tied to the effector used to practice synchronization. This is evaluated by comparing baseline performance on the complex rhythm with post-practice performance, and performance on a transfer task which involves the same hand or the opposite hand.

13(Study 2) Task Similarity Determines Patterns Of Transfer And Interference In Humans And Neural Networks During Continual Learning

By

This study replicates the experimental design of Study 1-Experiment 1 (previously conducted, https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/PS4M9) to assess the robustness of findings related to transfer and interference between tasks of varying rule similarity. The study design is identical to Study 1-Experiment 1. We will test two primary hypotheses based on results from this earlier study, using a new dataset to confirm their reproducibility.

In order to analyze the effectiveness of various learner strategies upon initial learning, retention, and subsequent transfer of a motor skill, 50 college-age subjects were randomly assigned to one of five strategy conditions: imagery, chunking, verbalization, informed-choice, and control. For the task, a serial manipulation apparatus required participants to manipulate a predetermined sequence of buttons and switches. Following learning trials, participants were administered a retention test. A transfer task was administered in order to discern the generalizability of specific strategies. Separate analyses for errors by positions, total errors, and total time revealed that imagers performed better on both acquisition and transfer than the chunking, verbalization, or informed-choice groups. 16ERIC ED149326: Theories Of Learning Transfer. Technical Report No. 79.

By

This paper reviews theories of transfer of learning to determine whether they offer guidelines for educational approaches. Two classes of theories are described. The first class of theories is based on the notion that the conditions for transfer are established when an original learning event and a transfer event share common stimulus properties. The second class of theories takes the position that facilitative transfer is a product of a successful memory search process. These two classes of theories are compared and their potential for providing guidelines for educational practice is examined. (Author/AA)

Research sought to determine whether memorization of rule statements before, during or after instruction in rule application skills would facilitate the acquisition and/or retention of rule-governed behavior as compared to no-rule statement memorization. A computer-assisted instructional (CAI) program required high school students to learn to a pre-specified criterion the application of five programing rules. Results indicated that rule statement memorization prior to rule application instruction did facilitate acquisition of rule-governed behavior. Despite this finding, however, no differences on a retention test in rule application skills could be attributed to the memorization of rule statements. (Author)

19ERIC EJ1097002: Transfer Of Learning Across Courses In An MBA Curriculum: A Managerial Finance Case Study

By

Business degree programs typically include a variety of required courses targeting analytical skills, general knowledge, and communication competencies. Integration of these learning outcomes is crucial for students' effective professional activities, yet little is known about cross-disciplinary transfer of specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs). This study examined the extent to which graduate students applied oral and written communication skills and strategies learned in a Managerial Communication course to assignments in a Managerial Finance course. Principles of organization were the most frequently applied communication strategies. Additionally, quality levels of the Finance course deliverables seemed relatively unaffected by students' prior Managerial Communication course experience.

Furthermore, students were given achievement test and transfer-test. The scores from these two tests were correlated. In general, the results showed that additive source-text materials in context-based instruction significantly improve the performance of the student in mechanics.

21ERIC EJ1147031: Factors That Influence Transfer Of Learning From The Online Environment

By

In this paper the author discusses transfer of learning factors to enhance the work skills and knowledge of online MBA students in a managerial communications course. Qualitative research survey methods were utilized; nVivo 8 was used to manipulate the data in two areas: factors that enhance transfer of learning and when students began to apply the skills and knowledge in the course. The results show that the assignments, concepts, feedback, communications, and the instructor had an impact on learning and transfer of learning. One specific time (from the beginning) was mentioned when students began to apply their learning. The results of the study may be informative and instructive for other online instructors.

22ERIC ED071594: Transfer Of College Credits And Off-Campus Learning.

By

In response to numerous complaints from evening college students across the country, a study on transfer of college credits was sanctioned by the United States Association of Evening Students (USAES). The purpose of this report is to emphasize and make administrators, deans, and faculty of institutions of higher education aware of problems associated with transfer credits as students become more mobile. The report reflects the issues at hand including off-campus learning, and what trends are being implemented to reform the educational process in terms of credentials. The study concludes that a locally, regionally, or nationally organized agency should be formed to oversee and monitor transfer credits. Further, there must be cooperation among the evening college deans and administrators in the form of scheduled meetings in order to make this program feasible. It is hoped that such meetings are encouraged among local colleges so they could periodically review related course requirements for ease of transfer credit evaluation. (HS)

23ERIC ED504737: Transfer Of Learning In Continuing Medical Education (CME): A Conceptual Model

By

Transfer of learning has been an age-old concern for HRD [Human Resource Development] professionals. With physicians expected to update their skills and knowledge regularly to improve healthcare, research has shown that these newly acquired skills and knowledge may or may not be implemented into practice (Committee on the Quality of Health Care, 2001). This conceptual model was developed to explore transfer of learning in Continuing Medical Education (CME). Pertinent transfer-related factors to the CME context were delineated. (Contains 1 figure.)

24ERIC ED038893: Some Reflections On Transfer Of Training In Foreign Language Learning.

By

Pedagogical implications of transfer of training theory and of an assumed universal grammar, as related to second language learning processes, are reviewed in this article. In recent years, the concept of a universal grammar has lost its credibility. The author urges, however, that grammar be conceived as a process or method of generating or transferring, rather than as a classification of items. He proposes that the relationship between knowledge of native grammar and success in foreign language learning will then become clear and that the fundamental unity of all the language arts will be reestablished. 25ERIC ED355508: Hypertext Learning Environments, Cognitive Flexibility, And The Transfer Of Complex Knowledge: An Empirical Investigation.

By

Although the use of hypertext systems for learning complex knowledge has been attracting recent attention, there have been few discussions in the hypertext literature on issues related to the cognitive prerequisites for learning conceptually demanding material. A study was conducted to investigate a theory-based hypertext learning environment that provided instruction in a complex and ill-structured domain. Subjects were 34 first- and second-year university students who were paid for their participation in the study. The experimental treatment incorporated several features derived from recent cognitive learning theory, in particular a hypertext procedure that presented the instructional material in multiple contexts to highlight different facets of the knowledge. The main results of the study revealed that although the control treatment led to higher performance on the measures of "memory" for factual knowledge, the more hypertext-like treatment promoted superior knowledge "transfer." Overall, these findings suggest that hypertext learning environments that present the instructed knowledge by explicitly demonstrating critical interrelationships between abstract and case-specific knowledge components in multiple contexts would be better at preparing students to use knowledge in new ways and in new situations. (Five figures and seven tables are include; a list of 59 references is attached.) (Author/SR)

26ERIC ED376943: Improving Students' Transfer Of Learning Among Subject Areas Through The Use Of An Integrated Curriculum And Alternative Assessment.

By

An intervention program sought to improve third- and fifth- grade students' ability to transfer learning among subject areas and to apply their learning to everyday occurrences. Surveys and interviews revealed the lack of student transference of knowledge among subject areas; teacher surveys and an interview with the curriculum director provided additional evidence. Probable cause of students' inability to make connections was thought to be related to curriculum overload, fragmentation, and irrelevancy; time, schedule restraints, and teacher reluctance to use innovative units also contributed. Two intervention strategies were used: (1) curriculum integration; and (2) use of alternative assessment. Integrated units connected core disciplines, incorporated technology into the classroom, and demonstrated the relevance of curriculum content in real-life settings. Methods of student assessment included portfolios, journals, writing across the curriculum, and testing that included higher-order thinking questions. The program was evaluated using surveys and interviews. Evaluation showed that the lack of connection across subject areas in school was reduced, and that students were better able to transfer knowledge among subject areas and to apply school-learned skills to everyday life. (Six appendices include interviews and surveys, criteria sheets, writing prompts, and a higher order thinking skills test.) (TM)

27ERIC ED336965: Testing The Transfer Paradigm In Second Language Learning: The Case Of Spelling Skills.

By

A study investigated the language transfer hypothesis in the specific area of second-language spelling. Data collected from 84 secondary school students learning Spanish as a second language show that in general, performance in English spelling is the best predictor of performance in Spanish spelling. Other variables included performance on a cognate test, learning strategies, sex, and grade. When good and poor spellers were separated, the data indicated that good spellers favored visual and/or context-related strategies to spell in both Spanish and English. In contrast, poor spellers favored a decoding strategy. Results also indicate that transfer of spelling strategies occurs between the students' first and second languages. It is suggested that the study opens new issues for exploration, such as how to facilitate transfer of skills from first to second language in good spellers while enhancing the use of alternative skills in poor spellers. An 11-item bibliography is included. (Author/MSE)

28ERIC ED211836: Conducting Studies Of Transfer Of Learning: A Practical Guide. Final Report.

By

This document is a guide for use by the practical researcher concerned with conducting studies of transfer of learning from pretraining of pilots in ground-based environments to performance in aircraft. While the material addresses principally transfer of learning of pilots, many of the issues should be applicable to other contexts, to include training of other aircrew members or even individuals who have quite different tasks to perform. The paper does not deal with theory but, rather, is concerned entirely with method of the transfer study. Method issues, including the planning, task, students, performance measurement, instructors, and analyses, are central to arriving at precise estimates of transfer effects--approaching as closely as possible the maximum that might have been demonstrated, providing a goal for the operational instructor pilot. Study models discussed include those for percent transfer of learning and for the transfer effectiveness ratio. Use of the latter should be essential in providing answers to contemporary questions concerning how much simulator pretraining can be used to replace aircraft training time--without reducing the production of the combat effective pilot. The guide was developed through review of published and unpublished studies of transfer of training from ground-based simulator to actual plane flying done during the past twenty or more years. Eleven steps were identified and are sequenced in the guide for use by researchers. (Author/KC)

29ERIC EJ1127757: Predictors Of Collateral Learning Transfer In Continuing Vocational Training

By

Against the background of demographic change and skill shortages continuing vocational training is of great significance in Germany. However, the training effectiveness is mostly assessed only at the end of a training program or several months after the training. Since in continuing vocational training the two contexts learning field (training) and performance field (work context) act simultaneously, the presented study investigated whether there are already situations in the work context which allow the application of newly acquired knowledge in parallel with the training. The main focus lies in the identification of predictors of learning transfer that takes place alongside the training participation and in the investigation of their causal relationships. Using structural equation modelling five latent variables were identified which have a significant effect on learning transfer parallel to the training--the so called collateral learning transfer. These five predictors explain together 62% of the variance of collateral learning transfer (gathered as performance improvement at work).

Ted was born in Indianapolis, IN, and was raised by his grandmother. When he was 13 he moved to Manhattan Beach, CA, where he lived with his aunt and uncle. Having promised his aunt he would not enlist until he was 19, Ted attended Oregon State College for one semester in 1942. On his 19th birthday Ted enlisted in the Marine Air Corps but he failed the eye test. He returned to California to take eye exercises. On March 15, 1943, Ted entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew missions in India and China in support of the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals for his service, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the war, Mr. Stevens completed degrees at UCLA and Harvard Law School. In 1950 he joined a law firm in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife Ann Cherrington. In 1952 Mr. Stevens accepted a position with Combs and Clasby, a law firm in Fairbanks. Later, in 1953 he became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks. During President Eisenhower's administration, he took a job with the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked with many other Alaskans to push for Alaska statehood and became the Chief Legal Officer (the Solicitor) of Interior. In 1961 Ted returned to Alaska to practice law in Anchorage in the new State of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964. In his second term, Mr. Stevens became the House majority leader. Mr. Stevens was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-Governor Walter J. Hickel to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator E.L. (Bob) Bartlett. Two years later in 1970, Alaskans chose Senator Stevens to finish that term. He was re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. During his service in the Senate, Senator Stevens was instrumental in the passage of the legislation settling Alaska Native land claims, the authorization of the Trans- Alaska Pipeline, transfer of the Alaska Railroad to the State, creating the essential air service program and bypass mail service. He has worked tirelessly to improve health care, communications, and transportation for Alaskans. Ted fought to enact the 200 mile limit to protect Alaska's fisheries. He authored the American Fisheries Act to reduce foreign ownership of Alaska's fisheries and created the Community Development Quota Program to promote economic development in Western Alaska. Ted was a strong supporter of development of Alaska's resources including construction of a gas pipeline and opening the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Range to oil and gas exploration. He was a national leader on pension reform, women in sports, national security and defense. The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act created the U.S. Olympic Committee. The longest serving member of Alaska's congressional delegation, Senator Stevens had more years of service than any other Republican in the U.S. Senate and was the longest serving Senator in the history of the Republican Party. Having served for 4 years as the Senate's President pro tempore, the Presiding Officer in the absence of the Vice President, Senator Stevens also served as the Senate's President pro tempore emeritus; vice chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; cochairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee; and ranking member of the Disaster Recovery Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee. He was married to the former Catherine Bittner, a fourth generation Alaskan and lawyer. He has 6 children and 11 grandchildren. His first wife, Ann Cherrington Stevens, was killed in a 1978 airplane crash at the Anchorage Airport. On August 9, 2010, Senator Stevens was among five people who died in an airplane crash north of Dillingham, AK, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. ? MEMORIAL ADDRESSES AND OTHER TRIBUTES FOR TED STEVENS Proceedings in the Senate Thursday, August 12, 2010 prayer The Chaplain, Dr. Barry C. Black, offered the following prayer: Let us pray. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, You make all things and fill them with Your blessings. You created us to rejoice in the splendor of Your radiance. Help our Senators today to nurture the inner light of Your presence in their lives. Enable them to hear Your still small voice calling them to embrace Your wisdom and to follow Your leadership. Lord, we commend to You former Senator Ted Stevens. We thank You for his life and legacy and acknowledge that we are diminished by his sudden and unexpected death. We are grateful for his wisdom, dedication, patriotism, courage, and service. Comfort his family and all who mourn. We pray in Your merciful Name. Amen. MOMENT OF SILENCE Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I ask unanimous consent that the Senate observe a moment of silence in memory of our former colleague, the late Senator from Alaska, Ted Stevens. The ACTING PRESIDENT pro tempore. Without objection, it is so ordered. (Moment of silence.) Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I ask unanimous consent that the Senate proceed to the immediate consideration of S. Res. 617, submitted earlier today. The ACTING PRESIDENT pro tempore. Without objection, the clerk will report the resolution by title. The legislative clerk read as follows: A resolution (S. Res. 617) relative to the death of the Honorable Theodore ''Ted'' Fulton Stevens, former Senator for the State of Alaska. There being no objection, the Senate proceeded to consider the resolution. Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I would like to take this opportunity, and I think I speak on behalf of all of our colleagues, certainly in sentiment if not my exact words, about our friend and former colleague, Ted Stevens. On Tuesday we were all deeply saddened to learn about his tragic passing. Ted's dedication to his Nation began with his valiant service in World War II and endured through six decades of public service. Ted helped secure statehood for his beloved Alaska and never stopped fighting for the people of the Pioneer State for over 40 years as its senior Senator. Our thoughts are with Ted's wife Catherine and the entire Stevens family and all of those who lost their lives and were injured in this week's sad accident. Mr. President, I want to personally add the thoughts of Senator Reid. I spoke with him last night. We spoke about Senator Stevens and remembered him fondly. Senator Reid particularly noted to me one of his prize possessions was a Hulk tie that Senator Stevens had given him, and he proudly still has it with him. Mr. McCONNELL. Mr. President, in the history of our country, no one man has done more for one State than Ted Stevens. His commitment to the people of Alaska and his Nation spanned decades, and he left a lasting mark on both. From his early military service as a pilot in World War II, to his involvement in the statehood of the Last Frontier, to his fierce support and defense of our Nation's military, Ted Stevens was always there, fighting for what he believed in, and usually winning. He was a force to be reckoned with, and we will miss him greatly. We extend our deepest sympathies to Catherine and the entire Stevens family, and to the families of the friends who were lost in this terrible accident. Mr. SCHUMER. I ask unanimous consent that the resolution be agreed to, the preamble be agreed to, the motions to reconsider be laid on the table en bloc, and that any statements relating to the resolution be printed in the Record. 33ERIC EJ908204: Proposed Principles For Promoting Pre-Service Teacher Transfer Of Group-Based Learning To The Classroom: A Discussion Paper

By

The effective "transfer" of knowledge and skills from university to the workplace is of global interest, yet this area of inquiry lacks research. Teacher educators, for example, require information on how to advance pre-service teachers' transfer of group-based learning to the primary school classroom (Scott & Baker, 2003). Group-based learning (GBL) is a valued means of developing learners' group work, personal attributes and interpersonal skills, and in the case pre-service teachers their professional skills. Graduate teachers do not necessarily generalise GBL pedagogy to the classroom. This discussion paper draws from a qualitative case study that examined this pedagogy in a pre-service teacher education program at Edith Cowan University. The case study revealed three core GBL issues: "consistency and coherence"; "equity and fairness"; "pragmatism and adding value". This paper proposes four principles of effective transfer and examines how, in relation to these three issues, these principles can promote effective transfer.

34ERIC ED599735: Revisiting Transfer Of Learning In Mathematics: Insights From An Urban Low-Income Settlement

By

Debates on transfer of learning in mathematics are not new. Claims of situatedness of learning within tasks and non-transferability of knowledge between tasks are widely contested. Direct Application (DA) of learning is a common paradigm for characterising transfer which led to many instances of transfer failure (Bransford & Schwartz, 2001). The alternative framework presented here shows that some of the transfer failures in mathematics can be considered as partial transfer by broadening the DA paradigm which can scaffold classroom pedagogy by drawing upon everyday mathematics. Claims are supported by data drawn from an economically active low income settlement where sample middle graders are engaged in house-hold based micro-enterprise, possess diverse opportunities for gaining mathematical knowledge. [For the complete proceedings, see ED597799.]

36Transfer Of Semantic Order Knowledge Following Hebb Repetition Learning

By

This experiment examines whether learning of a repeated ordered sequence of category labels (i.e., the Hebb repetition effect) can be transferred to a list of exemplars of those categories presented in the same order as the original Hebb list. That is, we are testing whether the learnt Hebb sequence chunk contains a basic semantic pattern.

37ERIC EJ1060004: Activation Of Operational Thinking During Arithmetic Practice Hinders Learning And Transfer

By

Many children in the U.S. initially come to understand the equal sign operationally, as a symbol meaning "add up the numbers" rather than relationally, as an indication that the two sides of an equation share a common value. According to a change-resistance account (McNeil & Alibali, 2005b), children's operational ways of thinking are never erased, and when activated, can interfere with mathematics learning and performance, even in educated adults. To test this theory, undergraduates practiced unfamiliar multiplication facts (e.g., 17-times table) in one of three conditions that differed in terms of how the equal sign was represented in the problems. In the operational words condition, the equal sign was replaced by operational words (e.g., "multiplies to"). In the relational words condition, the equal sign was replaced by relational words (e.g., "is equivalent to"). In the control condition, the equal sign was used in all problems. The hypothesis was that undergraduates' fluency with practiced facts and transfer problems would be hindered in the operational words condition compared to the other conditions. Results supported this hypothesis, indicating that the activation of operational thinking is indeed detrimental to learning and transfer, even in educated adults.

38ERIC ED492479: Reconceptualizing The Learning Transfer Conceptual Framework: Empirical Validation Of A New Systemic Model

By

The main purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a new systemic model of learning transfer and thus determine if a more holistic approach to training transfer could better explain the phenomenon. In all, this study confirmed the validity of the new systemic model and suggested that a high performance work system could indeed serve as a catalyst to successful learning transfer. (Contains 1 figure and 4 tables.) [For complete proceedings, see ED491481].

39ERIC ED600772: Transfer Learning Of Cognitive Control Using Mobile Applications

By

This research aims to explore the transfer learning of cognitive control skills using mobile applications. We explored whether mobile application can serve as a viable platform in training interference control, specifically the color Stroop task. Mobile phone's advantage lies in its portability and its ability to reach many people. Forty undergraduates from the authors' university were involved in the experiment. We introduced the use of a mobile application to present training exercises as well as to record answers and reaction times. Half of the participants were given standard logical thinking questions whereas the other half was given different types of Stroop task as a form of training, followed by the color Stroop test as a test of transference. The results showed that mobile app training using different types of Stroop task significantly improved the performance on the color Stroop Task in reaction time. Future studies can explore transfer learning of other types of cognitive control as well as explore our findings for other age groups. [For the complete proceedings, see ED600498.]

40ERIC ED614389: Transfer For Future Learning Of Fractions Within Cignition's Microtutoring Approach

By

In this exploratory research project, our team's goal was to design and begin validation of a measurement approach that could provide indication of a student's ability to transfer their mathematics understanding to future, more advanced mathematical topics. Assessing transfer of learning in mathematics and other topics is an enduring challenge. We sought to invent and validate an approach to transfer that would be relevant to improving Cignition's product, would leverage Cignition's use of online 1:1 tutoring, and would pioneer an approach that would contribute more broadly to assessment research. [This report was co-produced by MenloEDU with additional funding from Schmidt Futures under a subcontract from Cignition.]

41NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20230000058: Vetting Of TESS Transit Signals Using ExoMiner++ And Transfer Learning

By

We introduce ExoMiner++ which is an upgrade to our original deep learning classifier called ExoMiner. ExoMiner was recently trained and utilized to classify Kepler transit signals and validate hundreds of new exoplanets from the Kepler mission. ExoMiner++ addresses some of the shortcomings of the original ExoMiner, which includes adding new diagnostic test inputs and updating some aspects of the architecture. In this talk, we discuss ExoMiner++ and its performance on the TESS data. We will explain some of the differences between the TESS and Kepler missions data and how we handle these differences in order to have a classifier trained on Kepler data transferred to accurately classify TESS signals.

42Effects Of Construal-level On Learning Strategies And Knowledge Transfer

By

Although evidence for knowledge transfer has been found in some learning and test situations (Kamouri et al., 1986; Schwartz et al., 2011; Slotta & Chi, 2010), understanding the cognitive and motivational factors and processes that underlie those effects remains a persistent challenge (Carraher & Schliemann, 2002; Day & Goldstone, 2012). Individual differences in learning strategies may be one explanation for this variation in transfer outcomes. The strategies employed during learning and the resulting knowledge representation can impact the likelihood of transfer. Prior research has demonstrated individual differences in which some individuals tend to focus on memorizing exemplars during learning while others focus on isolating an abstraction of the underlying concept (McDaniel et al., 2014). However, questions remain on how people acquire these strategies and what specific factors affect their use. Research in social psychology has examined how priming effects can impact behavior and have shown that individuals can be primed to have a more abstract or concrete mindset through construal-level (Burgoon et al., 2011; Jia et al., 2009; Jiga-Boy et al., 2013). Construal-level theory suggests that people’s construals (i.e., how individuals perceive, comprehend, and interpret the world around them) can be more high-level (i.e., abstract) or low-level (i.e., concrete) (Trope & Liberman, 2010). Previous studies have demonstrated that construal-level can be manipulated within individuals to be more concrete or abstract through various tasks (e.g., answering how they would implement an activity vs. why they would implement that activity). However, few studies have examined construal-level in relation to learning or more complex problem-solving. The current work will attempt to integrate these separate disciplinary strands of research in order to better understand how to facilitate transfer processes. Specifically, we will investigate the effect of construal-level on learning strategies (memorization vs. rule-abstraction) and subsequent transfer. A high-level construal level is theorized to result in individuals focusing on abstract and global information and a low-level construal resulting in focusing on concrete and contextualized information. An intervention which manipulates this construal-level should influence whether individuals focus on memorization / exemplars vs. rule-abstraction strategies during learning and thus their likelihood of transferring that knowledge to a new situation.

43The Forward Effect Of Judgements Of Learning And Retrieval Practice On Memory And Transfer

By

Prior research has shown that retrieval can enhance learning of new (i.e., not-previously presented) information. This forward testing effect (FTE; for reviews, see Pastötter & Bäuml, 2014; Yang et al., 2018, 2021) has already been demonstrated with various study materials (e.g., single words, key-term definitions, texts and videos; for a meta-analysis, see Chan et al., 2018b). It has been suggested that metacognitive judgements, specifically Judgments of Learning (JOLs), are based on at least partial covert retrieval attempts when not all information is available (Dougherty et al., 2018), and thereby can produce retrieval-like effects. Thus, JOLs do not only index metacognitive monitoring (Rhodes, 2015), but can also enhance learning (Tauber & Witherby, 2019). Only a few prior studies examined the extent to which JOLs can enhance new learning of information (see Kubik et al., 2022; Lee & Ha, 2019). In the present study, we aim to investigate the relative advantage of JOLs (perhaps eliciting covert retrieval) and overt retrieval on new episodic and inductive learning compared to restudy. Lee and Ha (2019) examined forward effects of metacognitive judgments on inductive learning in two sections. In Section A, participants learned the painting styles of six artists by studying 36 painting–artist pairs (i.e., six paintings per artist). They were then asked to restudy these prior 36 pairs, take a cued-recall test on them (i.e., using the painting as a cue to retrieve the artist’s name), or evaluate the pairs’ learning status by performing a JOL task: Participants were either asked to perform item-based JOLs (i.e., assessing probability that they could identify the artist of a particular painting in a later test when the painting–artist pair is presented); category-based JOLs (i.e., assessing the probability that they could identify new paintings of an artist when the artist’s last name was shown); or global JOLs (in response to a single prompt that solicit an aggregate estimation of their future overall learning performance). In Section B, they learned six painting styles by studying 36 painting–artist pairs. Subsequently, they received a final cumulative transfer test, in which 48 new paintings (i.e., 4 of each artist) were presented in a single-choice test; participants’ task was to choose the correct artists’ last name. The authors demonstrated that category-based JOLs enhanced performance in a later transfer test identifying new paintings of the same artists, but item-based judgments did not. The latter finding in Experient 1 of Lee and Ha (2019) might be due to the fact that the task consisted of participants evaluating their learning of specific painting–artist pairs, which was inconsistent with the objective of learning the artists’ general painting styles and applying them in a transfer test. In addition, item-based judgments were solicited based on the complete cue–target pairs, that is, including both the cue (painting) and the target (last name of the artist). Lee and Ha (2019) argued that item-based JOLs cannot enhance new inductive learning of painting styles. We hypothesize that presenting the cue–target pairs rather than only the cue reduced the likelihood that participants engaged in covert retrieval when making JOLs. Based on the two-stage theory (Son & Metcalfe, 2005), making JOLs on complete information may only involve a first pre-retrieval stage of a quick familiarity assessment, while JOLs based on incomplete information likely covert retrieval attempts and thereby to enhance new inductive learning, similarly to overt retrieval practice. That is, participants are more likely to attempt complete retrieval attempts from memory when only the painting without the artist’s last name is presented than when both the cue (painting) and the target (last name of the artist) are presented. A first indication was provided by Kubik et al. (2022) using simple lists of words that JOLs based on incomplete information (i.e., cue-only JOLs) but not on complete information (i.e., cue–target JOLs) can enhance new learning. However, analogous research has not been conducted with more complex materials or inductive learning. To this end, we aim to replicate and extend the study by Lee and Ha (2019). We investigate and compare the benefits of JOLs and retrieval practice on future learning using pairs of paintings and artists. However, in addition to groups of cue–target JOLs, overt retrieval practice and restudy, we added an additional experimental group of cue-only JOLs.

44ERIC ED492788: Work Environment Factors Influencing The Transfer Of Learning For Online Learners

By

HRD professionals struggle with why a higher percentage of skills and knowledge acquired through training fail to transfer to the work environment and why transfer appears to diminish over time (Cromwell & Kolb, 2002). With increased investment in technology and professional development, it is imperative to enhance the learners' transfer process particularly concerning their work environment. This study identified critical work environment factors supporting or impeding transfer for participants of an online professional development program. (Contains 4 tables.)

46ERIC ED282915: The Use Of Simulations In Learning And Transfer Of Higher-Order Cognitive Skills.

By

The present research addresses the issues of whether there exist certain cognitive skills that facilitate transfer, and whether such skills are themselves transferable across domains. Of primary concern is the instructability of such skills. The Systems Thinking and Curriculum Innovation Project (STACI) is a two-year research project testing the potentials and effects of using the systems approach to teach content specific knowledge and general problem solving skills. The content of existing high school science courses has been integrated with instruction and computer software that emphasize higher-order cognitive skills. The study also examines the effectiveness of using Structural Thinking Experimental Learning Laboratory with Animation (STELLA) to teach system dynamics and content knowledge. Four science teachers at a high school in Vermont are using STELLA and systems thinking in their courses. Teachers and researchers are working in a collaborative effort. The teachers' primary goal is to infuse the classes with systems thinking and to determine if the curriculum innovation is an effective way of teaching certain topics and skills; the researchers' goal is to document the curriculum innovation and to examine its cognitive consequences. A primary outcome of the project will be to disseminate information about the theory that underlies systems thinking and the methods by which the approach has been infused in the curricula. (BAE)

47ERIC ED574783: Seeking The General Explanation: A Test Of Inductive Activities For Learning And Transfer

By

Evaluating the relation between evidence and theory should be a central activity for science learners. Evaluation comprises both hypothetico-deductive analysis, where theory precedes evidence, and inductive synthesis, where theory emerges from evidence. There is mounting evidence that induction is an especially good way to help learners grasp the deep structure (i.e., underlying principles) of phenomena. However, compared to the clear falsification logic of hypothetico-deductive analysis, a major challenge for inductive activities is structuring the process to be systematic and effective. To address this challenge, we draw on Sir Francis Bacon's original treatise on inductive science. In a pair of experiments, college students used a computer simulation to learn about Faraday's law. In the inductive conditions, students sought a general explanation for several cases organized according to Bacon's tenets. In contrast, other students engaged a more hypothetico-deductive approach of sequentially testing (and revising) their hypotheses using the simulation. The inductive activity led to superior learning of a target principle measured by in-task explanations and posttests of near transfer and mathematical understanding. The results provide two important pieces of information. The first is that inductive activities organized by Bacon's tenets help students find the deep structure of empirical phenomena. The second is that, without an inductive "push," students tend to treat instances separately rather than searching for how they partake of the same underlying principle. [This paper was published in the "Journal of Research in Science Teaching" (EJ1048840).]

48Understanding The Mechanisms Of Deep Transfer Learning For Medical Images

By

The ability to automatically learn task specific feature representations has led to a huge success of deep learning methods. When large training data is scarce, such as in medical imaging problems, transfer learning has been very effective. In this paper, we systematically investigate the process of transferring a Convolutional Neural Network, trained on ImageNet images to perform image classification, to kidney detection problem in ultrasound images. We study how the detection performance depends on the extent of transfer. We show that a transferred and tuned CNN can outperform a state-of-the-art feature engineered pipeline and a hybridization of these two techniques achieves 20\% higher performance. We also investigate how the evolution of intermediate response images from our network. Finally, we compare these responses to state-of-the-art image processing filters in order to gain greater insight into how transfer learning is able to effectively manage widely varying imaging regimes.

50Transfer Of Category Learning To Different Contexts (Pt 2)

By

Prior research in category learning has primarily focused on the transfer of novel instances within the same context. Whether the learning context (i.e. the perceptual quality of learning stimuli) in a category learning task impacts the transfer to novel instances in a new context remains largely unanswered. We are investigating how learning in reliably imperfect contexts (i.e. a consistent stimulus feature is occluded throughout the block) as compared to perfect contexts, transfers to ‘imperfect world’ contexts, in which all stimuli features are perceptually occluded.

Remarkable insight into the life of Pomeroy prior to, during, and following the crimes for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the tender age of 14, this is an excellent complement to Pomeroy's "autobiography" which was published immediately following his trial in 1874. The advantages offered by this short book are that it was researched and published less than twenty years after the trial and conviction; that the accused was still alive at the time of publication; and that a large amount relates to the legal perspective of one of the most fascinating and confounding episodes of American criminology. Jesse Harding Pomeroy was sentenced to life in prison in 1874 at the age of 14 for the commission of two murders, and has therefore been referred to as "America's youngest serial killer" to this day. Other books have been written about Pomeroy over the years, as it makes for a most interesting character study, in addition to its legal implications, journalistic influence, and the effect of public outcry for justice and safety were preeminent. - Summary by Roger Melin
