6ERIC EJ1142103: Cultivate Mindfulness: A Case Study Of Mindful Learning In An English As A Foreign Language Classroom

This case study investigated how the use of mindfulness affected college English as a foreign language (EFL) students' learning and how mindful learning strategies supported their learning of English. Mindful learning considers the students' abilities to be aware, perceive and conceive. Mindfulness results in an increase in competence, memory, creativity, and positive affect based on the previous studies. In this study, 24 undergraduate freshmen participated at a Northeastern University in China. The data collection included those undergraduates' pre-surveys, post-surveys, work samples, the instructor's observation notes and the researcher's reflective journal entries. This practice found that by engaging in mindful strategies, EFL students took ownership of their learning in the following ways: students built and became aware of a comfortable learning environment in their classroom through mindfulness; mindful writing helped students generate new thoughts and become aware of their thinking; mindfulness facilitated their learning process, and cultivated creativity and intelligence; mindful cooperative learning provided students with an opportunity to discover their awareness, learn from others, reflect and think critically.

8ERIC ED539309: Making Connections For Mindful Inquiry: Using Reflective Journals To Scaffold An Autobiographical Approach To Learning In Economics

This research develops a narrative of incidents of intentional learning by students studying undergraduate economics as represented in their written reflective journals. The deliberate integration of learner reflection, reflective practice and reflective writing into the pedagogy may facilitate transfer learning (Sousa, 2006). Transfer has been identified as an important factor for how the brain learns. The more connections that learners can make in their learning the more likely it is that the sense and meaning of learning will be appreciated and the more likely it is that new learning will be retained (Sousa, 2006). By supporting an autobiographical approach to learning in economics wherein learners individualise learning, connecting their experiences (past and present, academic and non-academic) a pedagogy that advances self-authorship on the part of the learner is encouraged and facilitated. Self-authorship is a central goal of higher education (Baxter Magolda and King, 2004). Students find associative learning in a manner that supports full transfer quite difficult. It is thus important for educators to bridge students' learning from one learning situation to another (Blanchette and Dunbar, 2002). Reflective journaling is introduced as a performance of understanding to scaffold this learning. Student reflective journaling can establish the sense of new learning for them, connect this learning to their existing learning networks and find the meaning in this learning for them. This research describes the design, enactment and results of the development of reflective journaling as an assessment strategy in an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts module in economics in University College, Cork. When critical thinking is conceptualized as mindful learning, the focus is on the educational experiences or actual academic tasks designed to engage students in active learning. Academic tasks are sets of specifications for learning activities that provide the framework for curricular content. The academic tasks are designed by teachers and shared with students, or designed by teachers and students together. Academic tasks differ from conventional curriculum guides that focus on subject matter scope and sequence. They also differ from conventional behavioral objectives in that academic tasks focus on the work of the student rather than on the results of teacher work. When academic tasks are associated with critical thinking, students have opportunities for critical thinking as part of the learning experience itself. Conventional conceptions of academic tasks include routine or recall tasks, opinion, formal, and skilled performance tasks. Tasks and subtasks that incorporate critical thinking as a mindful learning concept include strategic, probablistic reasoning, creative, and collaborative tasks or subtasks. Mindful learning tasks involve higher degrees of ambiguity, or uncertainty, and higher degrees of perceived risk than most conventional academic tasks. Conceptualizing critical thinking as mindful learning involves fundamental changes in the role of the teacher and in the student-teacher relationship. (IAH)

2Treatise of Modern Falconry

The 18th century book A Treatise on Modern Falconry is still one of the most quoted books in today's falconry community. <br><br>The preface was possibly written by a Rev. A. Willis, ridicules "The Origin and Progress of Language," a publication shortly before his writing this book. The introduction to this book gives a historical account of the development of falconry from its beginnings long before the 9th century in the middle East to its apparent decline at the invention of the hunting gun. It also includes interesting facts about the practice of falconry in Persia and Hindostan, where falconry became (and in some parts of the Middle East still is) a sport and pastime of the upper classes. <br><br>In the second and main part, the book talks about the falconer and his instruments as well as how to treat and train his birds. The book introduces methods of training and handling falcons, hawks and other birds of prey, and also includes sections about their diseases and possible injuries.(Summary by Curt Walton.)
