304 Understanding By Design

By

In this episode, I am sharing the ideas I got by reading the book Understanding by Design by Grant Wiggins. UbD, the concept is also known as backward designing, is first answering three essential questions to design the course, and sharing those to the students in the first or initial days of the course. This helps students know why they are taking the course and eventually helps them stay motivated and self-regulated. --- Connect with me: [email protected] Insta: @umesunlearn Also follow our workshops/sessions/updates here: Empowerment Academy (https://www.facebook.com/eanepal) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/umesko/message

4ERIC EJ1085032: Understanding By Design (UbD) In EFL Teaching: The Investigation Of Students' Foreign Language Learning Motivation And Views

By

In today's world, where learning a foreign language is highly prioritized, it is an important prerequisite that education has components that are lasting, meaningful, and transferable to everyday life. Moreover, these components would have a positive influence on student motivation. The purpose of this study is to investigate students' language learning motivation and views about integration of Understanding by Design (UbD) into their lessons. The study was carried out through mixed method research. For the quantitative part, pre-test post-test experimental design was carried out while action research was instrumented for the qualitative part of the study. 10 teachers and 436 students participated the study. Of the 436 students, 225 were in the treatment group and 211 were in the control group. Through the action research, 10 instructors who were trained about UbD, were divided into four groups, each of which designed three different unit plans and implemented them in their classes. As quantitative data collection tool, Motivation/Attitude Scale (MAS), which was developed by Dörnyei and adapted to Turkish by Mendi (2009) was used. For the qualitative data of the study, focus group interviews were held with 10 students. The quantitative data was analyzed through the analysis of covariance and independent samples t-test. The qualitative data was analyzed through content analysis. The quantitative results of the study indicated that there was a significant difference in A and B level students' foreign language learning motivation in favor of the treatment group. The qualitative findings indicated that UbD implementation had a positive impact on students' foreign language learning motivation and knowledge transfer skills. These findings underline the importance of foreign language motivation and providing students with experiential learning.

6Understanding MHC Class I Presentation Of Viral Antigens By Human Dendritic Cells As A Basis For Rational Design Of Therapeutic Vaccines.

By

This article is from Frontiers in Immunology , volume 5 . Abstract Effective viral clearance requires the induction of virus-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). Since dendritic cells (DC) have a central role in initiating and shaping virus-specific CTL responses, it is important to understand how DC initiate virus-specific CTL responses. Some viruses can directly infect DC, which theoretically allow direct presentation of viral antigens to CTL, but many viruses target other cells than DC and thus the host depends on the cross-presentation of viral antigens by DC to activate virus-specific CTL.Research in mouse models has highly enhanced our understanding of the mechanisms underlying cross-presentation and the dendritic cells (DC) subsets involved, however, these results cannot be readily translated toward the role of human DC in MHC class I-antigen presentation of human viruses. Here, we summarize the insights gained in the past 20 years on MHC class I presentation of viral antigen by human DC and add to the current debate on the capacities of different human DC subsets herein. Furthermore, possible sources of viral antigens and essential DC characteristics for effective induction of virus-specific CTL are evaluated. We conclude that cross-presentation is not only an efficient mechanism exploited by DC to initiate immunity to viruses that do not infect DC but also to viruses that do infect DC, because cross-presentation has many conceptual advantages and bypasses direct immune modulatory effects of the virus on its infected target cells.Since knowledge on the mechanism of viral antigen presentation and the preferred DC subsets is crucial for rational vaccine design, the obtained insights are very instrumental for the development of effective anti-viral immunotherapy.

7ERIC EJ1147498: Understanding By Design (UbD) In EFL Teaching: Teachers' Professional Development And Students' Achievement

By

Concepts such as teachers' professional development and students' achievement act as the driving force for the development of each in a causal relationship in EFL teaching, as in many other disciplines. The purpose of this study is to investigate the change Understanding by Design (UbD) made on teachers' professional development and students' achievement. The study was carried out through action research design. The participants were 10 teachers and 436 students. Within action research based UbD studies, the instructors received training, formed four groups and made three designs and implemented them. As qualitative data collection tools, unit designs and one-to-one interviews were used. The quantitative data of the study were collected through English achievement scores. We instrumented content analysis for the qualitative data and the analysis of covariance and independent samples t-Test for the quantitative data. The findings indicated that action research based UbD studies had positive contributions to teachers' professional development process and students' English achievement.

13ERIC ED585254: An Action Research On Project-Based Learning And Understanding By Design And Their Effects On The Science Achievement And Attitude Of Science Students

By

Project-Based Learning has been the leading strategy used by most of the top educational systems in the world. Authentic learning that addresses the 21st century skills is what PBL offers. However, little research has been done to explore its potential in improving the quality of education in the country and what framework to be used to be able to "curricularize" PBL. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of Project-Based Learning using Understanding by Design framework in improving the academic achievement and attitudes of grade 6 students in science 6. Two sections in the grade 6 level from Sta Quiteria Elementary School in Caloocan City was selected for the study. Group A (Gold) was taught through project-based learning technique and Group B (Garnet) was taught through a more traditional teaching technique. A pretest and posttest was administered on both groups to find out if there is a statistical difference between their achievements. There was a statistical difference between the mean academic achievement scores of pretest and posttest after the intervention. The statistical difference has proven the effectiveness of PBL as a more effective method in teaching science. In addition, motivation and attitude were positively impacted. Further studies and in-service trainings for teachers were recommended to discover the effectiveness of PBL in other subject areas.

14ERIC EJ1126353: Understanding By Design: Mentored Implementation Of Backward Design Methodology At The University Level

By

Unless sought out by the individual, University and College faculty typically receive minimal, if any, pedagogical training as part of their career development. This perspectives essay first introduces pedagogical training for instructors in higher education by comparing it to the training required for primary and secondary school educators. Using this as a backdrop, it then discusses the stated goals of higher education and contrasts these goals with the type of preparation that is traditionally offered to future faculty during graduate and post-doctoral training, with emphasis given to the general lack of teaching mentorship and practical application. It goes on to describe a future faculty member's journey of seeking out higher education pedagogical training, and the process of implementing a student-centered course based on a backward design model, highlighting the importance of experienced mentorship in this process. This essay concludes with a reflection on the backward design process as a whole, the imagined difference in the quality of curriculum and implementation in the absence of mentorship, as well as a discussion about how this experience speaks to pedagogical preparation of higher education teachers in the United States.

15GDC 2013: Amy Pritchard - "Privacy By [Game] Design: Understanding Privacy Requirements And Building Them Into Games From The "Start"

As technological advances allow developers to offer ever more personalized gameplay experiences, the need to respect and protect user privacy grows too. This is especially true given the increasing amount of attention being paid by regulators to how companies treat user privacy in terms of informing them about what information is collected, how it is used, and with whom it is shared. Privacy experts and game developers discuss some of the unique ways that games should be mindful of user privacy, and how taking a "privacy-first" approach to game design at the outset of a project avoids privacy-related issues later on. This includes how to navigate the challenging world of child-directed products and compliance with the Federal Trade Commission's amended rule overseeing the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
