A two-phase study was designed to investigate the relationship between cognitive skills hypothesized (by Piaget) to underlie number competence, and performance on tasks requiring logical reasoning with number-related concepts. During the first phase, a battery of tasks was administered to 60 kindergarten and 60 third-grade students. These tasks were designed to assess acquisition of concepts identified as formally related to various aspects of number concepts. Tasks within a concept area were weighted according to their relative importance and degree of difficulty. Data were analyzed using contingency tables. In the second phase of the study, data were reanalyzed using a set of behavioral indices developed by Brainerd in earlier work. The results of the study support Piagetian theories of cognitive development. (SD)

Accurate and timely information is critical to effectively coordinate disaster response. Due to the diversity and complexity of data sources, it is difficult for traditional methods to classify disaster events and assess damage severity. Previous studies have mainly focused on specific tasks, such as information collection or humanitarian assistance, but have not adequately addressed the assessment of disaster loss severity. This paper proposes a hybrid learning model to improve disaster event classification and damage severity identification. The model combines image and text data, using ResNet50 to extract features from images, and using long short-term memory with an attention mechanism to learn sequences from text. This combination allows for a more contextual and informative representation of the input data. The experimental results shows that the proposed multimodal approach achieves significantly better results in disaster event classification attaining an accuracy of 90.31%, compared to existing methods. Furthermore, the model demonstrates promising capabilities in assessing damage severity, offering significant improvements for disaster management and response preparation where accuracy and dependability are crucial.

This paper presents a method for the automatic extraction of subgrammars to control and speeding-up natural language generation NLG. The method is based on explanation-based learning (EBL). The main advantage for the proposed new method for NLG is that the complexity of the grammatical decision making process during NLG can be vastly reduced, because the EBL method supports the adaption of a NLG system to a particular use of a language.

This study examined how machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) techniques can be leveraged to assess the interpretive behavior that is required for successful literary text comprehension. We compared the accuracy of seven different machine learning classification algorithms in predicting human ratings of student essays about literary works. Three types of NLP feature sets: unigrams (single content words), elaborative (new) n-grams, and linguistic features were used to classify idea units (paraphrase, text-based inference, interpretive inference). The most accurate classifications emerged using all three NLP features sets in combination, with accuracy ranging from 0.61 to 0.94 (F=0.18 to 0.81). Random Forests, which employs multiple decision trees and a bagging approach, was the most accurate classifier for these data. In contrast, the single classifier, Trees, which tends to "overfit" the data during training, was the least accurate. Ensemble classifiers were generally more accurate than single classifiers. However, Support Vector Machines accuracy was comparable to that of the ensemble classifiers. This is likely due to Support Vector Machines' unique ability to support high dimension feature spaces. The findings suggest that combining the power of NLP and machine learning is an effective means of automating literary text comprehension assessment. [For the full proceedings, see ED596512. Sebastian Ruder is currently a Research Scientist at Deepmind. His research focuses on transfer learning for natural language processing, and making machine learning and NLP more accessible. HMM producer Anna Steltenkamp speaks with Devon Mihesuah. Devon is an enrolled citizen of the Choctaw Nation and is the Cora Lee Beers Price Teaching Professor in International Cultural Understanding at the University of Kansas. Anna speaks with her about the book she co-edited with Elizabeth Hoover, entitled: “Indigenous Food Sovereignty in the United States: Restoring Cultural Knowledge, Protecting Environments, and Regaining Health.” Devon is also the author of the book “Recovering Our Ancestors’ Gardens: Indigenous Recipes and Guide to Diet and Fitness,” and the revised edition was just released this year. This is the second segment in a multi-part dialogue with Devon Mihesuah. In this segment, Devon speaks about how to conceptually reimagine food as more than just a commodity. She proposes that food provides more than just biological nourishment, for it also gives us cultural, ecological, and spiritual nourishment. Also, she addresses the importance of learning about food in a multi-generational and experiential manner within the natural world. In this manner, one may develop an emotional connection with the natural world and learn how to act respectfully within, and how to understand the rhythms of, the natural world.

The first part of this report reviews an extensive series of studies concerned with the reciprocal teaching of comprehension fostering and monitoring strategies--an instructional method in which an adult teacher and a group of students take turns leading a dialogue aimed at revealing the meaning of the text. The studies reviewed indicate that after extensive exposure to these reading dialogues, poor readers improve, not only in their contribution to the dialogues, but also in their independent comprehension performance in the laboratory, in the classroom, and on standardized tests. The report then describes comparisons of reciprocal teaching with other viable teaching methods, including modelling, direct instruction, and practice. In addition, a description is provided of attempts to hand the procedures over to a variety of teachers, experienced, inexperienced, and peer tutors, as well as mapping modifications needed to ensure that the method survives under the pressures of actual classroom conditions. Finally, the report describes how to use reciprocal teaching dialogues with young and slower learners to improve both reading and listening comprehension. (Author/HOD)

Scientific literacy is more than the simple reproduction of traditional school science knowledge and requires a set of skills, among them identifying scientific issues, explaining phenomena scientifically and using scientific evidence. Several studies have indicated that playing computer games in the classroom can support the development of students' conceptual understanding about scientific phenomena and theories. Our paper presents a research study where the role of the video game "Spore" as a learning tool was analysed in a Biology class. An ethnographical perspective served as the framework for the organization and development of a workshop comprised of five sessions with 22 4th grade students, and their Biology teacher. The results show that this video game could become an interesting learning tool to improve students' understanding of evolution and natural selection. The students could combine their previous knowledge with the academic knowledge obtained though the simulation presented by the video game. To sum up, an attempt has been made to give some empirical guidance about effective approaches to the utilisation of games in classrooms, additionally paying attention to a number of concerns related to the effectiveness of video games as learning tools.

Science educators and individual teachers have attempted to adapt global learning strategies to the local cultural environment. This research provides empirical evidence for one culture, the Kpa-Mende. Anthropological field methods were used to collect data to develop a base from which to ask meaningful questions about natural phenomena. The sample schools in general were found to offer relatively little explicit science instruction concerning natural phenomena of major concern to the Kpa-Mende. Classroom instruction tended to emphasize more abstract scientific concepts. Students were interviewed concerning the explanation for 12 natural phenomena. In the pilot study, using a three-point grading for school answers, the student responses without home explanations were found to be statistically more like the schools than those with home explanations. The main study ranked the phenomena according to the percentage of fathers who discussed a single culture item at home. A correlation of the adult percentage with student grouped scores was not significant. A correlation of adult percentage with those of students expressing the same explanations was significant at the .05 level. It was noted that many of the students failed to use school information. Strategies need to be developed to sensitize teachers to nonschool learning. (Author/EB)

Design research was chosen to achieve this research goal. In design research, the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) plays an important role as a design and research instrument. This HLT tested thirty-seven students of grade five primary school (i.e. SDN 179 Palembang). The result of the classroom practices showed that measurement (length) activity could stimulate students' to produce fractions as the first level in learning multiplication of fractions with natural numbers. Furthermore, strategies and tools used by the students in partitioning gradually developed into a more formal mathematics in which the number line could be used as the model of measuring situation and the model for more formal reasoning. The number line then could bring the students to the last activity level, namely on the way to rules for multiplying fractions with natural numbers. Based on these findings, it is suggested that Streefland's five activity levels can be used as a guideline in learning multiplication of fractions with natural numbers in which the learning process becomes a more progressive learning.

Children’s attitudes towards learning may significantly shape their academic persistence (Rhodes et al., 2019), and growth in competency or achievement (Mao et al., 2021). These attitudes may therefore be especially significant to children’s learning of complex subjects. This paper asks whether US third graders’ attitudes towards learning (i.e., their science identity and growth mindset), and their conceptual understanding of science, influences their learning about evolution by natural selection, a counterintuitive topic that many people—including adults--- notoriously find difficult to learn (Gregory, 2009). It also explores whether engaging with two versions of a challenging explanation-based investigative science curriculum changes third graders’ attitudes towards, and conceptions of, science. Natural language inference (NLI) is a fundamentally important task in natural language processing that has many applications. The recently released Stanford Natural Language Inference (SNLI) corpus has made it possible to develop and evaluate learning-centered methods such as deep neural networks for natural language inference (NLI). In this paper, we propose a special long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture for NLI. Our model builds on top of a recently proposed neural attention model for NLI but is based on a significantly different idea. Instead of deriving sentence embeddings for the premise and the hypothesis to be used for classification, our solution uses a match-LSTM to perform word-by-word matching of the hypothesis with the premise. This LSTM is able to place more emphasis on important word-level matching results. In particular, we observe that this LSTM remembers important mismatches that are critical for predicting the contradiction or the neutral relationship label. On the SNLI corpus, our model achieves an accuracy of 86.1%, outperforming the state of the art.

In this study, a dataset consisting of 19,087 data samples is used to evaluate the effectiveness of seven supervised machine learning models. Among these models are three based on deep learning: long short-term memory (LSTM), bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM), and 1D convolutional (Conv1D), as well as a multi-layer model that combines Conv1D and LSTM approaches. The task at hand is the classification of product categories. The LSTM-based model demonstrates the highest accuracy rate of 96.23% among the deep learning models, while the logistic regression (LR) models achieve the highest accuracy scores of 97.00% for product category classification. Overall, the proposed models and techniques show significant progress in natural language processing (NLP) research for text classification, specifically in English, and have practical applications for e-commerce sites.

Abstract Machine learning has been used for estimation of potential energy surfaces to speed up molecular dynamics simulations of small systems. We demonstrate that this approach is feasible for significantly larger, structurally complex molecules, taking the natural product Archazolid A, a potent inhibitor of vacuolar-type ATPase, from the myxobacterium Archangium gephyra as an example. Our model estimates energies of new conformations by exploiting information from previous calculations via Gaussian process regression. Predictive variance is used to assess whether a conformation is in the interpolation region, allowing a controlled trade-off between prediction accuracy and computational speed-up. For energies of relaxed conformations at the density functional level of theory (implicit solvent, DFT/BLYP-disp3/def2-TZVP), mean absolute errors of less than 1 kcal/mol were achieved. The study demonstrates that predictive machine learning models can be developed for structurally complex, pharmaceutically relevant compounds, potentially enabling considerable speed-ups in simulations of larger molecular structures.

Ted was born in Indianapolis, IN, and was raised by his grandmother. When he was 13 he moved to Manhattan Beach, CA, where he lived with his aunt and uncle. Having promised his aunt he would not enlist until he was 19, Ted attended Oregon State College for one semester in 1942. On his 19th birthday Ted enlisted in the Marine Air Corps but he failed the eye test. He returned to California to take eye exercises. On March 15, 1943, Ted entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew missions in India and China in support of the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals for his service, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the war, Mr. Stevens completed degrees at UCLA and Harvard Law School. In 1950 he joined a law firm in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife Ann Cherrington. In 1952 Mr. Stevens accepted a position with Combs and Clasby, a law firm in Fairbanks. Later, in 1953 he became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks. During President Eisenhower's administration, he took a job with the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked with many other Alaskans to push for Alaska statehood and became the Chief Legal Officer (the Solicitor) of Interior. In 1961 Ted returned to Alaska to practice law in Anchorage in the new State of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964. In his second term, Mr. Stevens became the House majority leader. Mr. Stevens was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-Governor Walter J. Hickel to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator E.L. (Bob) Bartlett. Two years later in 1970, Alaskans chose Senator Stevens to finish that term. He was re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. During his service in the Senate, Senator Stevens was instrumental in the passage of the legislation settling Alaska Native land claims, the authorization of the Trans- Alaska Pipeline, transfer of the Alaska Railroad to the State, creating the essential air service program and bypass mail service. He has worked tirelessly to improve health care, communications, and transportation for Alaskans. Ted fought to enact the 200 mile limit to protect Alaska's fisheries. He authored the American Fisheries Act to reduce foreign ownership of Alaska's fisheries and created the Community Development Quota Program to promote economic development in Western Alaska. Ted was a strong supporter of development of Alaska's resources including construction of a gas pipeline and opening the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Range to oil and gas exploration. He was a national leader on pension reform, women in sports, national security and defense. The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act created the U.S. Olympic Committee. The longest serving member of Alaska's congressional delegation, Senator Stevens had more years of service than any other Republican in the U.S. Senate and was the longest serving Senator in the history of the Republican Party. Having served for 4 years as the Senate's President pro tempore, the Presiding Officer in the absence of the Vice President, Senator Stevens also served as the Senate's President pro tempore emeritus; vice chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; cochairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee; and ranking member of the Disaster Recovery Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee. He was married to the former Catherine Bittner, a fourth generation Alaskan and lawyer. He has 6 children and 11 grandchildren. His first wife, Ann Cherrington Stevens, was killed in a 1978 airplane crash at the Anchorage Airport. On August 9, 2010, Senator Stevens was among five people who died in an airplane crash north of Dillingham, AK, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. ? Examples are given for German and, mostly, Russian. At run-time, Zbie builds simple memory structures. Patterns and sets are built on the functional language. The translation rules of the patterns and an in-context vocabulary provide the transition to the natural language. Zbie is a cautious learner, and avoids errors by several mechanisms. Zbie is capable of some evolutionary learning.

This open access book provides an overview of the recent advances in representation learning theory, algorithms and applications for natural language processing (NLP). It is divided into three parts. Part I presents the representation learning techniques for multiple language entries, including words, phrases, sentences and documents. Part II then introduces the representation techniques for those objects that are closely related to NLP, including entity-based world knowledge, sememe-based linguistic knowledge, networks, and cross-modal entries. Lastly, Part III provides open resource tools for representation learning techniques, and discusses the remaining challenges and future research directions. The theories and algorithms of representation learning presented can also benefit other related domains such as machine learning, social network analysis, semantic Web, information retrieval, data mining and computational biology. This book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, researchers, lecturers, and industrial engineers, as well as anyone interested in representation learning and natural language processing.

We study several statistically and biologically motivated learning rules using the same visual environment, one made up of natural scenes, and the same single cell neuronal architecture. This allows us to concentrate on the feature extraction and neuronal coding properties of these rules. Included in these rules are kurtosis and skewness maximization, the quadratic form of the BCM learning rule, and single cell ICA. Using a structure removal method, we demonstrate that receptive fields developed using these rules depend on a small portion of the distribution. We find that the quadratic form of the BCM rule behaves in a manner similar to a kurtosis maximization rule when the distribution contains kurtotic directions, although the BCM modification equations are computationally simpler.

The natural teaching method is active and student-centered, based on schema and constructivist theories, and informed by research in neuroplasticity. A schema is a mental picture or understanding of something we have learned. Humans can have knowledge only to the degree to which they have constructed schemas from learning experiences and practice. Constructivist theory suggests that it is only by direct, active, hands-on exploration and learning from errors can a person construct a schema. Brain and neuroplastic research indicates that as learning occurs, brain nerve cells grow additional fibers (dendrites) and synapses. The learner, through active trial-and-error exploration, increases physiological neuron networks. The six stages of the Natural Teaching Method Planning Model provide a way to guide students to construct new schemas: (1) stimulate students to activate any related knowledge; (2) guide students to start constructing the new structures or knowledge on the structures; (3) consolidate the first growth of new structures and knowledge; (4) give students the opportunity to gain more complex understanding; (5) give students the opportunity to start using their new knowledge in a creative way; and (6) give students the opportunity to fine tune the increasing complexity and richness of the neural network. This scoping review aims to systematically map the existing literature on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and natural language processing (NLP) tools developed to generate multimodal (visual, textual, and audio) summaries of the intensive care unit (ICU) journey and discharge experience. Survivors of critical illness often experience fragmented transitions of care due to inadequate communication about their ICU stay. Traditional discharge summaries tend to be clinician-centred and predominantly text-based, often excluding contextual and patient-understandable information. In contrast, emerging AI-driven technologies offer the potential to automatically generate personalised summaries that combine narrative text, visual timelines, and audio explanations, improving continuity of care and patient understanding. Despite the rapid advancement of AI applications in healthcare, there is currently no comprehensive review examining how such multimodal summary tools have been applied or developed specifically for the ICU context. This review will identify and describe existing tools, their output modalities (textual, visual, audio), target users (clinicians, patients, families), and reported outcomes, limitations, and implementation factors. The findings will inform the development of future AI-based solutions for ICU survivorship and recovery communication. This review also forms a key evidence base for the Critical Illness Brain Dysfunction Survivorship Plus (CIBS+) programme and supports ongoing NIHR and Wellcome-funded research into personalised post-ICU digital health tools.

Every programmer has a characteristic style, ranging from preferences about identifier naming to preferences about object relationships and design patterns. Coding conventions define a consistent syntactic style, fostering readability and hence maintainability. When collaborating, programmers strive to obey a project's coding conventions. However, one third of reviews of changes contain feedback about coding conventions, indicating that programmers do not always follow them and that project members care deeply about adherence. Unfortunately, programmers are often unaware of coding conventions because inferring them requires a global view, one that aggregates the many local decisions programmers make and identifies emergent consensus on style. We present NATURALIZE, a framework that learns the style of a codebase, and suggests revisions to improve stylistic consistency. NATURALIZE builds on recent work in applying statistical natural language processing to source code. We apply NATURALIZE to suggest natural identifier names and formatting conventions. We present four tools focused on ensuring natural code during development and release management, including code review. NATURALIZE achieves 94% accuracy in its top suggestions for identifier names and can even transfer knowledge about conventions across projects, leveraging a corpus of 10,968 open source projects. We used NATURALIZE to generate 18 patches for 5 open source projects: 14 were accepted.

In 1921, American poet H.D. collected and published a selection of previously published poems by Marianne Moore. Although this angered Moore, as it was entirely unauthorized, she later accepted the edition as well made and used it as the basis for her own 1924 publication of Observations. George Moore, an Irish writer involved with the Celtic Revival was influenced by the French Realists and particularly by the work of Émile Zola. Often considered as the first modern Irish novelist he became involved with Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats in the establishment of the Irish Literary Theatre. As part of his involvement with the Literary Revival, he wrote a set of short stories set in Ireland, drawn from his experiences growing up on his family’s estates in Co. Mayo. The stories were intended to be translated into Irish as a part of a new tradition of Gaelic Literature. <br> The stories were later published in English as The Untilled Field, in 1903. Moore was initially influenced by Ivan Turgenyev’s collection of short stories, Tales of a Sportsman and in turn they are thought to have been an influence on James Joyce’s Dubliners collection.
