In order to establish effective learning environments and promote their students' achievement, teachers must demonstrate emotional intelligence. The goal of the study was to find out how crucial emotional intelligence (EI) is for teachers who want to improve their ability to connect with kids, control disruptive behaviour in the classroom, and foster resilience. 106 faculty members from the Excel Group of Institutions in Komarapalayam, Nammakal district, made up the sample size. The findings demonstrated a favourable correlation between higher levels of EI and improved classroom management, closer bonds with pupils, and greater resilience in the face of adversity. The results emphasise how crucial it is for teachers to acquire and strengthen their EI skills in order to increase their success in the classroom.

This paper presents partial results of a completed study which investigated the experience of teaching mathematics content courses to preservice elementary teachers. Interviews with ten mathematics instructors who teach these courses revealed several major tensions, including one that arises as instructors strive to set priorities and balance their affective and cognitive goals for their students. An analysis of three of the instructors' experiences of this particular tension will provide insight into the factors that contribute to it and how it is managed. The effects of recent moves toward national testing regimes are being felt at the classroom level, where teachers feel compelled to "teach to the tests." Thus, they are now accountable in two ways: to students (and their understandings) and to the public and to the school boards (for improving overall student test scores). It is important to understand how teachers assess their students in response to these pressures. In this article, the authors report on findings from a year-long study of how teachers determine student understanding and why they employ the instructional and assessment strategies that they do. Qualitative data were collected on five science teachers from the Sonora Foothills School District, and are reported here in the form of individual case studies. The authors single out three important issues raised by their research: (1) the importance of recognizing the impact of political pressures on classroom teachers; (2) the importance teachers place on connecting teaching and assessment; and (3) the accountability dilemma and teachers' capacity to operate within a complex policy milieu.

This document, which is designed to prepare teachers and administrators to integrate vocational and academic education successfully, contains 46 case studies illustrating the roles teachers must assume to facilitate such integration. The cases, which have been drawn from a 1992 study titled "Teachers' Roles in the Integration of Vocational and Academic Education" (B. June Schmidt et al.), are grouped by four functional themes: cooperative efforts; curriculum strategies; instructional strategies; and administrative practices and procedures. Also included are an introductory discussion of the importance of integrating vocational and academic education, a list of purposes the cases can serve, and guidelines for selecting appropriate cases and managing the instructional setting. The following are among the titles of the case studies included: "Teachers Teaching Students"; "Coordination Gone Awry"; "The Applied Approach Makes All the Difference"; "Sharing with Parents"; "Teaming to Develop a Textbook"; "Hands-On Experience Versus Class Attendance"; "Making Math More Relevant"; "The Student Does the Teaching"; "Letter Writing in the Auto Mechanics Lab"; "The Community Can Be a Valuable Resource"; "Dealing with the Skeptics"; "Team Teaching"; and "Organizing for Teacher Cooperation." Appended are a 12-item bibliography and a chart detailing the type of school(s), teaching areas, and cooperative efforts illustrated in each case study. (MN)
