A study investigated the effect Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) has had on literacy at Estancia High School in California which recently implemented an SSR program. It also examined the role SSR has on language development, comprehension, vocabulary, student attitudes, and its corollary consequence on the development of reading habits. A survey of 22 students taught by the researcher and currently participating in the high school program supported both the positive and negative conclusions formed about SSR--19 of the students said they read most or all of the time during the established reading period. In a further survey at the school, 54 out of 90 students said they read most of the time when told to read silently for 20 minutes during class. Similar results were seen with respect to reading habits. Most students felt they read a little more since the SSR program was introduced; however, only 53% of the students surveyed want the school to continue the program. It is recommended that the SSR program be continued, since SSR gives students practice at reading and in experiencing different writing styles, which can help develop writing skills. Less is known about how children read connected text in silent reading, and the range of reading strategies used in an ordinary primary school classroom, than about the reading of single words, oral reading and reading by skilled adults. This paper describes and evaluates a method of testing children's silent reading in which they are their own judges. Two appendixes include: (1) A fairy tale with difficult spelling; and (2) A modified version of a Wordsworth sonnet, with easier spelling but more difficult to understand. (Contains 2 tables.)

The practice of sustained silent reading (SSR) is based on the belief that motivation, interest, self-selection, modeling, and time spent reading contribute to student reading achievement. A study was designed to ascertain the prevalence of SSR in classrooms in a particular geographic area and the degree to which the program's original goals are being met. Ninety-six seventh-grade teachers from 32 school districts in 5 northeastern Pennsylvania counties were sent a survey regarding participation in SSR, organization of the program, material selection, and methods of evaluation; 69 teachers answered the survey. Findings suggest that silent reading is popular in the classroom in part because of the opportunities for instructional decision making it provides teachers. However, the individual implementation of the program has resulted in many aspects of the actual practice of SSR deviating from the original model. Questions regarding the integrity of current practices as compared to the original model are discussed, and suggestions to teachers who plan to implement or revise SSR programs are offered. One hundred and fifteen first graders were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Experimental pupils used the Visual Tracking program, and the control pupils participated in directed listening activities in separate rooms. The teachers followed a weekly rotating schedule in supervising the groups. After 12 weeks of training, eye-movement of all pupils were photographed with the EDL Reading Eye Camera as they read silently. Forty-four pupils were retested to collect data for determination of test-retest reliability. Eye-movement scores of 96 pupils were analyzed by factorial analysis of variance. Results showed the following: (1) No significant differences were found between the two groups on any of the five eye-movement measures (fixations, regressions, span, duration, and rate). (2) Girls read with significantly fewer fixations and at a significantly faster rate than did the boys (p < .05). (3) No significant interaction effects were found between visual tracking training and sex. (4) Test-retest reliabilities for the five eye-movement measures ranged from .66 to .88, and (5) Inter-rater reliability coefficients ranged from .82 to .98. It was concluded that the proposition that visual tracking training would improve first graders' silent reading performance was not supported. Tables, appendixes, and a bibliography are included. A study assessed the reliability and some aspects related to the validity of an open sentence approach to assessing comprehension during silent reading. Subjects, 37 randomly selected seventh-grade students, read an "Opin" passage, prepared by deleting the second half of every other sentence. The blanks filled in by students were evaluated using a scale based on the response's resemblance to the author's intent. Responses were also divided into fragmented, projective, and interactive categories. Oral readings of a second, intact passage were used to determine the kinds of reading miscues made by students. The results confirm that the Opin sentence procedure has sufficient interrater reliability to be used for assessing a reader's ability to interact with text during silent reading. Both the percent score method and the category scoring method proved reliable for reading assessment purposes. The pattern of correlations with the miscue scores also indicates that readers who attempt to interact with the text while reading are more likely to make miscues that are consistent with their search for meaning. Because of the time and effort expended in obtaining printout made at the computer, it is to our advantage to have more printout done at the terminal. c. Although the quality of the paper and printing is not so good as on the present equipment, it is felt that this is not a major disadvantage to us. In the type of work done on the present system, we need hard but only temporary printout. d. The reliability of the 2741 has been excellent so far. We did have trouble with the previous terminal, the DATEL. Following reading and listening tasks, adult long-term memory is high in semantic information and low in syntactic and lexical information. Comprehension during reading and listening must depend to some extent, however, on short term retention of linguistic information that is less abstract and shares more features of the input than the semantic products of comprehension observed in long-term memory. This paper describes a study focussing on short-term memory for discourse, with three basic issues: (1) the role of linguistically marked units in recallability of words just read, (2) information organization schemes as opposed to short-term memory handling of information, and (3) oral vs. silent reading. Thirty-two third and fourth graders from an urban parochial school in a white working class neighborhood were divided into two different skill levels determined by scores from the Metropolitan Achievement Test. Both simple and difficult reading tasks were given. The overall results support a model of reading comprehension skill emphasizing short-term memory quantitative differences in memory function during reading. The fact that differences were found between the groups in listening, silent reading and oral reading but not in probe digit performance suggests that differences in language memory functions are not wholly dependent on decoding or simple short-term memory capacity. This textbook is a primary-grade reader focusing on silent reading of interesting selections to build control of eye movements that lead to careful silent reading with good comprehension and a long attention span. Silent reading is the complex process of getting thought from the printed page and involves an entirely new pedagogy. In the selection of reading matter, two main purposes have been dominant: first, to provide selections which will so interest the child that he will develop a habit of extensive silent reading; and second, to deal with situations that children actually encounter in real life and which are within the realm of possible rather than fancied experiences. This study uses a novel approach employing electromyography (EMG) for looking at the muscle activation of articulatory gestures during reading in order to capture sub-vocalization during the silent reading of text. There is currently no research that examines EMG responses specifically during the silent reading of longer texts and how different factors such as genre expectation (e.g., poetry vs. prose) may influence an enacted rhythmic processing in reading style of different text types. The central objective is to investigate whether muscle activation occurs during silent reading. It is expected that the degree of muscle activation might differ depending on the 'mode' of reading silently, thus two conditions are examined, namely mouthed (lip movements but no voice) vs. mute (no lip movements and no voice) reading; for comparison, reading aloud data will also be collected. Additionaly, the experiment investigates whether the silent reading in its respective mode also varies depending on the text type people expect to read (e.g., poetry or prose layout). Furthermore, we will collect physiological data – e.g., electrodermal activity (EDA), pulse rate (PR), pulse rate variability (PRV), respiratory rate (RR) – as well as data from the beat-drop alignment test (BDAT), short version of the Gold-MSI questionnaire, and data from a short questionnaire on reading habit. Utilizing EMG-technology for the first time for longer text is helping to provide more straightforward evidence for differences between implicit and explicit reading for full-text reading and word-by-word reading. Additionally, this study contributes to the research suggesting rhythmically distinct subvocalised processes occur during silent reading (e.g. Gagl et al. 2021, Beck & Konieczny, 2021), as well as to the debate of genre expectations shaping reading style (Hanauer, 1998).

For Athens it's like old times, when wartime British agents kept bumping into Soviet and Nazi German spies. Defection incidents that began in this bustling Mediterranean city have spread ripples far and wide. The latest intrigue involved the dra- matic defection last month of Soviet embassy shipping attache Viktor Gundarev, 50, his son. Maxim, and a Soviet woman. The U.S. State De- partment said Mr. Gundarev was a KGB colonel. A bit earlier, a senior member of a visiting Romanian trade delega- tion gave three colleagues the slip while visiting the Acropolis. Local reports said he was whisked away by CIA agents who were waiting at a pawn shop. Last year Sergei Bokhan, a Soviet Embassy first secretary who said he was Soviet military intelligence (GRU) deputy station chief, de- fected to the United States. The defections have wider signifi- cance for Western security, for they revealed what one authority called -previously unknown details of So- viet espionage activities in NATO countries:' Shortly after Mr Gundarev's de- tection. former U.S. Navy Lt.
