6Understanding Health Patterns In Coastal Communities Across The UK: A Scoping Review Protocol
By Salmaan Ansari, Christopher Farmer, Maja Niksic, Ashley and Lindsay Forbes
This is a scoping review that aims to identify and map the available evidence on the variation in health patterns in coastal and non-coastal communities in the UK. It will also explore how the researchers have conceptualised and defined coastal communities in the UK. It will include all studies from 1980 to the present. By identifying the strengths and limitations in the current research landscape, the review seeks to guide future research directions and policy to address the health issues in the coastal communities.

8Potential Networks, Contagious Communities, And Understanding Social Network Structure
By Grant Schoenebeck
In this paper we study how the network of agents adopting a particular technology relates to the structure of the underlying network over which the technology adoption spreads. We develop a model and show that the network of agents adopting a particular technology may have characteristics that differ significantly from the social network of agents over which the technology spreads. For example, the network induced by a cascade may have a heavy-tailed degree distribution even if the original network does not. This provides evidence that online social networks created by technology adoption over an underlying social network may look fundamentally different from social networks and indicates that using data from many online social networks may mislead us if we try to use it to directly infer the structure of social networks. Our results provide an alternate explanation for certain properties repeatedly observed in data sets, for example: heavy-tailed degree distribution, network densification, shrinking diameter, and network community profile. These properties could be caused by a sort of `sampling bias' rather than by attributes of the underlying social structure. By generating networks using cascades over traditional network models that do not themselves contain these properties, we can nevertheless reliably produce networks that contain all these properties. An opportunity for interesting future research is developing new methods that correctly infer underlying network structure from data about a network that is generated via a cascade spread over the underlying network.

9Understanding Mental Health In Diverse Communities (www.kiu.ac.ug)
By Odile Patrick Thalia
This paper examines the multifaceted nature of mental health within diverse communities, with a specific focus on cultural perceptions, systemic disparities, and community-based responses. Through qualitative methods including focus groups and interviews, the study examines how mental health is understood, stigmatized, and treated among underserved populations, particularly multiracial, Latino Caribbean, African American, and Punjabi communities. Findings highlight that cultural beliefs, socioeconomic status, language barriers, and historical mistrust significantly impact help-seeking behaviors and access to mental health services. Participants often face challenges such as limited provider cultural competence, inadequate insurance, and societal stigma. The research further discusses how holistic and culturally affirming approaches, coupled with policy changes and grassroots initiatives, can bridge care gaps. Community-based and participatory methods show promise in creating inclusive mental health frameworks. The study concludes by calling for culturally competent, policy-informed mental health systems and expanded interdisciplinary efforts to reduce disparities and improve health equity.

10FRAME: Framing, Risk, And Minority Engagement – Understanding Perceptions Of Neuroscience Research Among Minority Communities
By Andrea Kiesse Ghonda, Marissa Hartwig and Michael R Dougherty
The underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities in research remains a persistent and well-documented issue. Barriers to participation include mistrust, logistical and structural constraints, methodological biases, and historical injustices. This study aims to (1) examine how psychological and social factors influence research participation among minority populations, and (2) propose a conceptual decision-making model that highlights the roles of social influence and framing effects. Drawing on the Health Belief Model, we introduce the FRAME (Framing, Risk, and Minority Engagement) Model.

18Understanding A Special Operations Role: Network Caretakers Of Knowledge-Based Communities Of Practice
By Robey, John W. and Webber, Paul M.
The success of special operations often depends upon building and sustaining relationships with partners. Because of the unconventional environment in which we operate, relationships can also be non-standard, including academics, reporters, and private industry. By creating a community of practice, individuals in special operations may be able to connect groups of subject-matter experts who share a deep interest in a particular activity and, through regular interaction with special operations, learn how to engage more effectively in this activity. The work of this thesis is two-fold: building a Knowledge-Based Community of Practice and applying this design method to the authors' case study of Libya. This research offers a partial solution by bolstering a deeper environmental understanding through the creation of such a Knowledge-Based Community of Practice, consisting of a spectrum of individuals with differing perspectives, to engage in iterated structured dialogues. The structure, design, and life cycle of a community of practice, as well as the types and frequencies of interactions and implications of the post-information age are explored. The design methods are rooted in Army doctrine as a method of structuring interactions and distilling information to local planners. Big data sets are implemented to back-stop information from structured sessions. In short, the authors reflect on the establishment and sustainment of a community of practice to better connect with subject-matter experts who care to bring to bear a more complete understanding of an operational environment prior to, during, or in order to avoid altogether the application of military force.

19Paul's Understanding Of The Church's Mission : Did The Apostle Paul Expect The Early Christian Communities To Evangelize?
By Plummer, Robert L. (Robert Lewis), 1971-
The success of special operations often depends upon building and sustaining relationships with partners.

21Transit-Oriented Displacement Or Community Dividends?: Understanding The Effects Of Smarter Growth On Communities
By Chapple, Karen, Loukaitou-Sideris, Anastasia
An examination of the neighborhood transformation, gentrification, and displacement that accompany more compact development around transit. Cities and regions throughout the world are encouraging smarter growth patterns and expanding their transit systems to accommodate this growth, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and satisfy new demands for mobility and accessibility. Yet despite a burgeoning literature and various policy interventions in recent decades, we still understand little about what happens to neighborhoods and residents with the development of transit systems and the trend toward more compact cities. Research has failed to determine why some neighborhoods change both physically and socially while others do not, and how race and class shape change in the twenty-first-century context of growing inequality. Drawing on novel methodological approaches, this book sheds new light on the question of who benefits and who loses from more compact development around new transit stations. Building on data at multiple levels, it connects quantitative analysis on regional patterns with qualitative research through interviews, field observations, and photographic documentation in twelve different California neighborhoods. From the local to the regional to the global, Chapple and Loukaitou-Sideris examine the phenomena of neighborhood transformation, gentrification, and displacement not only through an empirical lens but also from theoretical and historical perspectives. Growing out of an in-depth research process that involved close collaboration with dozens of community groups, the book aims to respond to the needs of both advocates and policymakers for ideas that work in the trenches. The open access edition of this book was made possible by generous funding from the MIT Libraries.

25ERIC ED581851: Designing Professional Learning Communities Through Understanding The Beliefs Of Learning
By ERIC
This study was designed to initiate the process of building professional development learning communities for pre-service math teachers through revealing those teachers' conceptions/beliefs of students' learning and their own learning in China. It examines Chinese pre-service math teachers' conceptions of student learning and their related pedagogical beliefs with respect to the following four aspects: self-regulation, construction of knowledge, the social nature of learning, and a dynamic view of ability. A total of 129 middle-school and secondary pre-service math teachers from China participated in this study. The results indicated that the Chinese pre-service teachers' conceptions of student learning and their pedagogical beliefs are constructive, process-oriented, and progressive. In addition, the traditional Chinese socio-cultural values still have an impact on the pre-service teachers' conceptions of student learning. Implications and recommendations for designing meaningful and effective teacher professional development programs that not only incorporate teachers' beliefs of student learning but also are aligned with Chinese mathematics education reform are also discussed. [For the full proceedings, see ED581791.]

31ERIC ED519650: Understanding The Early Years: Early Childhood Development In The Montreal Study Area, Montreal, Quebec. An Analysis Of The Communities Survey
By ERIC
This report presents survey findings from two cycles of data collection in a 45-km area of Montreal located east of the city centre. The study was conducted by Statistics Canada as part of the second pilot phase of the Understanding the Early Years initiative (UEY-II), using the Communities Survey, a research tool adapted from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY). The first cycle of data collection took place in 2001, and the second cycle occurred in 2005. The Communities Survey consisted of two main activities: direct assessments of kindergarten children in the Montreal study area and interviews with parents. The results from the survey paint a portrait of early childhood outcomes at the study site, including outcomes related to physical health and well-being, cognitive skills and behaviour. The parental interviews offered information on a plethora of factors that may have influenced these developmental outcomes. The factors include the demographic characteristics of the children (e.g., age, gender), family income, parental education, parenting practices, childcare arrangements, literacy activities in the home, mutual support among neighbours, neighbourhood quality and safety, and use of the community's recreational, cultural and educational resources. By analyzing the two cycles of survey data together, the report also offers some insights into changes in demographic characteristics, family processes and community factors in the Montreal study area between 2001 and 2005, and how these changes may have affected the development of kindergarten children living in the community. To facilitate understanding of the survey results, the developmental outcomes of Montreal children are compared with the averages for the seven UEY-II pilot communities and, where possible, with averages for Canada as a whole. The remainder of this summary presents highlights from the report. "Early Childhood Development: Findings from Research" is appended. A bibliography is included. (Contains 20 tables, 27 figures and 11 footnotes.)

32A Review Of Progress In Understanding The Organization Of Communities Of Soil Arthropods
By Jean-François Ponge
The paper reviews developments in studies of population and community ecology of soil micro-arthropods (with special reference to Collernbola and Acari). The majority of research continues to be descriptive, based on sampling the arthropods in various habitats. However, experimental studies are becoming commoner, and these are yielding information on ecological niches, the interactions between species, and the recovery of communities following a perturbation. The paper concentrates on four areas of community analysis. First, the effect of quality of food on the dynamics of Folsomia candida populations is considered. The protein content of fungal food affects both fecundity and the speed of development of individual animals, and there were also differences between growth on different species of fungus. Second, the changes in micro-arthropod communities during a successional sequence have been described. It is postulated that early successional species are more typically "r"-selected, and late successional species are "K"-selected. Third, the role of perturbation experiments in understanding community structure is discussed: unfortunately much of the literature on the use of insecticides and acaricides does not identify the micro-arthropods affected to species level, often leaving them as major taxonomic groups (i.e. total Collembola). Fourth, the simple community of micro-arthropods on Signy Island is analysed: very clear groupings depending on the moss and lichen cover are demonstrated. The paper is concluded with a discussion which highlights some areas where no more information is required, and other areas where research effort could profitably yield results of importance in population and community analysis.

34DTIC ADA580860: Reintegrating Troops With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) Into Their Communities: Understanding The Scope And Timeline Of Post-Deployment Driving Problems
By Defense Technical Information Center
This study examines the extent to which combat driving behaviors and anxieties are carried-over into driving on American roads post-deployment from service in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) and to compare such behaviors in Service Members (SMs) who have and have not served in these combat operations and who do and do not have mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The study has struggled to gain access to subjects, finally achieving access to FT Gordon this year. Two other sites (FT Campbell and FT Bragg) are in process as is USARIEM. This month, FT Gordon PI (S. Mooney) begins distribution of surveys. Personnel are also in training for telephone survey option and survey questions. No findings to report at this time.

35ERIC ED569151: Professional Learning Communities Participant's Activities For The What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guide: Foundational Skills To Support Reading For Understanding In Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade. REL 2016-277a
By ERIC
The Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southeast developed a Professional Learning Community (PLC) Facilitators Guide to support educators in the implementation of recommendations from the What Works Clearinghouse's. The practice guide focuses on the foundational reading skills that enable students to read words, relate those words to their oral language, and read connected text with sufficient accuracy and fluency to understand what they read. The practice guide, developed by a panel of experts comprised of researchers and practitioners, presents four recommendations that educators can use to improve literacy skills in the early grades. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are a form of professional development in which small groups of educators with shared interests work together with the goals of expanding their knowledge and improving their craft. REL Southeast developed PLC materials focused on the practice guide that were designed to assist a literacy leader in guiding a professional learning community in applying the recommendations from the practice guide. The materials include a facilitator's guide, participant activities, and YouTube videos. The facilitator's guide includes a framework for facilitators to conduct each of the ten PLC sessions. It also includes participant activities, discussion questions, small- and whole-group activities, and implementation and reflection activities. The participant's activities include reflection questions, lesson plan examples and templates, video-viewing guides, and sharing opportunities. The videos illustrate practices presented in the foundational reading skills practice guide. [For the Facilitator's Guide, see ED569149. This paper explores how early childhood (EC) leaders in South Africa support the EC centres in the townships of Gauteng Province. The term township refers to underdeveloped and racially segregated urban areas reserved for black communities, specifically Coloured, Africans and Indians. The townships are usually built outside the cities and towns. The term (township) also has a discrete legal implication in South Africa's system of land title, which carries no tribal connotations. Gauteng Province is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. It is the economic hub of the country and consists of people from diverse cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this paper is to understand the support practices by EC leaders through providing insight into the subjective experiences of practitioners. In this paper, support means empowering practitioners. This paper followed the qualitative approach in exploring how EC leaders support practitioners in a diverse cultural milieu. The paradigm used is interpretive because the author interpreted the support mechanisms offered. Data was collected through literature review. The paper contends that knowledge and understanding of diverse cultures is significance in giving support to culturally diverse EC centres. The expectation is that EC leaders should have the skill and ability to support practitioners in any given context. Findings reveal that good support can happen when there is collaboration between principals, practitioners and communities. [For the complete Volume 17 proceedings, see ED596826.]

38ERIC ED511767: Understanding Quality In Context: Child Care Centers, Communities, Markets, And Public Policy
By ERIC
Early care and education can prepare children for school, but while some preschool and child care programs do an excellent job, others are inadequate and some may even harm healthy development. This study focuses on child care center directors to better understand why there is so much variation, and how public initiatives can better help poor-quality programs improve. Using data from in-depth interviews and classroom observations, the research considers how various factors--including director and program characteristics, market forces, and federal state and local policies--are associated with each other, director decision making, and program quality. Appended are: (1) Director Interview Guide; (2) Obtaining Nominations for High-Quality Centers to Include in Sample; (3) Sampling Steps; and (4) Additional Details on CLASS Dimensions and ECERS-R Items Used in the Research. (Contains 1 figure, 3 tables, 4 boxes and 10 notes.) ["Understanding Quality in Context: Child Care Centers, Communities, Markets, and Public Policy" was written with Anna Danziger, Teresa Derrick-Mills and Heidi Johnson.]

39ERIC ED427806: Cerritos College Learning Communities: Exploring And Understanding Diverse Perspectives.
By ERIC
In 1995 Cerritos College (California) introduced a learning community model that combines curriculum development, classroom technology, and cultural awareness sensitivity in order to strengthen student academic success. This model is different from interdisciplinary projects and blended curriculum in that the design not only focused only on student academic impact via faculty-to-student interaction, but it also creates a strong premise for student-to-student and faculty-to-faculty interaction. Each year the learning community clusters highlight a featured theme for enhancing student skills: college readiness, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and, for 1999-2000, multimedia technology. In examining student responses to questions designed to assess content, delivery, and feedback, the majority of students surveyed perceived the learning community format as beneficial for understanding and retaining content. Student performance was enhanced by immediate feedback. Respondents found course material easier to learn when presented in a practical context in a number of different ways. This report also includes discussions on the cooperative learning environment and instructional delivery methods. (AS)

44Understanding Experiences Of Inequality In Public Acute Healthcare Among Members Of Marginalised Communities: A Qualitative Study
By David Healy, Chris Noone and Sonto Madonsela
This study is part of a larger research project which aims to make the National Inpatient Experience Survey more accessible and inclusive for marginalised communities in Ireland. The survey is managed and delivered by the Health Information and Quality Authority’s National Care Experience Programme. The survey may need to be adapted to include patients from different communities and circumstances that may affect their experience of hospital care. To learn how to make the survey more accessible and inclusive, we will carry out qualitative research with people from marginalised communities about their experience of being an inpatient in public acute hospitals in Ireland. We will collaborate with community organisations who work with people from marginalised communities to engage these groups in this research. We will ask participants questions about different aspects of their hospital care experience, to better understand how marginalised people experience this care. The findings will be used to inform a planned future project to co-develop changes to the National Inpatient Experience Survey to make it more accessible and inclusive for marginalised communities in Ireland.

45DTIC AD1047034: Reintegrating Troops With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) Into Their Communities: Understanding The Scope And Timeline Of Post-Deployment Driving Problems
By Defense Technical Information Center
This study examined the carryover of combat driving behaviors and anxieties onto Service Members driving on American roads post-deployment to Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) using a drop-off or in place questionnaires. Subject sample did not allow comparison to those not deployed to those conflicts. Exploratory analyses were made across the four groups constituted by the responding 44 Service Members (SMs): nodiagnosis (0Dx) (n=6), TBI (n=12), PTSD (n=7), and dual diagnosis (TBI/PTSD) n=19. Additional comparisons were made between 28 Family/Friends matched to their SMs. Even in this small sample some trends were apparent: SMs with TBI/PTSD had significantly more combat driving behaviors and driving related anxieties when driving on US roads. SMs with TBI and TBI/PTSD carried significantly more weapons in their personal vehicles and the two most commonly carried were also the most lethal i.e., gun and knife. Family and friends appear to be aware that driving behavior and driving related anxieties are part of their SMs driving, but also underestimate the severity of these issues. That, combined with SMs limited concern about their combat driving behaviors is likely to mean that SMs will not specifically seek driving assistance. Instead education on carryover driving and anxieties should be integrated into general clinical care of SMs with TBI or PTSD and into the educationof their Family/Friends. Chief limitations were the studys protracted data collection, lack of subjects without deployment experience, and small sample size overall, allowing only tentative findings across groups although difference between 0Dx and diagnostic groups was consistent across questions.

The study has struggled to gain access to subjects. PI's ORISE Faculty Fellowship US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM) has offered slow progress. An initial plan to collaborate with BAMC was terminated with that institution citing excess research demands. Project is in process with command and OICs of Research at Ft. Riley and Ft. Hood and with command of CBWTUs (COL Mozden) to gain access to SMs with mTBI. No progress in accessing uninjured Soldiers (with and without OEF/OIF service). Presentation of original pilot data a Military Health Research Forum was reported on front page of US Today (Sept 1, 2009) and St. Paul Pioneer Press (Sep 1, 2009), as well as many military and civilian websites Marines and National PTSD center have expressed interest in collaboration on project. 49Transactional Sex And HIV: Understanding The Gendered Structural Drivers Of HIV In Fishing Communities In Southern Malawi.
By MacPherson, Eleanor E, Sadalaki, John, Njoloma, Macdonald, Nyongopa, Victoria, Nkhwazi, Lawrence, Mwapasa, Victor, Lalloo, David G, Desmond, Nicola, Seeley, Janet and Theobald, Sally
This article is from Journal of the International AIDS Society , volume 15 . Abstract Background: In Southern Malawi, the fishing industry is highly gendered, with men carrying out the fishing and women processing, drying and selling the fish. Research has shown that individuals living in fishing communities in low-income countries are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection. One of the key drivers of HIV in fishing communities is transactional sex. In the fishing industry this takes the form of “fish-for-sex” networks where female fish traders exchange sex with fishermen for access to or more favourable prices of fish. By controlling the means of production, the power dynamics in these exchanges favour men and can make it more difficult for women to negotiate safe sex. Methods: Qualitative methods were used to collect data on gendered drivers of transactional sex in the fishing community and how different groups perceive HIV risk in these transactions. Observation, focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews were undertaken with members of the fishing communities, including men and women directly and indirectly involved in fishing. Results: In fishing communities transactional sex was prevalent across a spectrum ranging from gift giving within relationships, to sex for fish exchanges, to sex worker encounters. Power differences between couples in transactional sexual encounters shape individual’s abilities to negotiate condom use (with women being at a particularly disadvantaged negotiating position). The context and motivations for transactional sex varied and was mediated by economic need and social position both of men and women. Female fish traders new to the industry and boat crew members who travelled for work and experienced difficult living conditions often engaged in transactional sex. Conclusions: Transactional sex is common in Malawian fishing communities, with women particularly vulnerable in negotiations because of existing gendered power structures. Although knowledge and understanding of the HIV risk associated with transactional sex was common, this did not appear to result in the adoption of risk reduction strategies. This suggests that specially targeted strategies to increase women’s economic empowerment and tackle the structural drivers of women’s HIV risk could be important in fishing communities.
