3Implementation Of A Blended Learning Approach To Teaching Evidence Based Practice: A Protocol For A Mixed Methods Study.

By

This article is from BMC Medical Education , volume 13 . Abstract Background: Evidence based practice (EBP) requires that health professionals are competent in integrating the best evidence in their decision making. Being 'evidence-based’ requires skills and knowledge in epidemiology, biostatistics and information literacy. EBP is commonly taught in medical and health sciences degrees, yet there is little evidence to guide educators as to the best teaching modality to increase learner competency in EBP. Methods/design: This study is mixed methods in design. A randomised controlled trial will examine the effectiveness of blended learning versus didactic approach of teaching EBP to medical students. The primary outcome of the RCT is EBP competency as assessed by the Berlin tool. Focus groups will be conducted to explore student perceptions and attitudes towards implementing a blended learning approach in teaching EBP. A concurrent triangulation design will be implemented, permitting quantitative data to inform the effectiveness of the intervention and qualitative data to contextualise the results. Discussion: This study will provide novel evidence on the effectiveness of blended learning in teaching EBP to a cohort of undergraduate and graduate-entry medical students.

8ERIC ED120125: Research Methods For Educational Decision-making: An Alternative Approach To Teaching Introduction To Educational Research.

By

Introductory educational research courses are often based on the scientific model of research derived from natural science. Scientific research using theoretical constructs and measurement of variables establishes a body of verified knowledge through replication of experiments. The conceptualization of the introductory research course presented in this study is one based on a decision-making model of research derived from social science. This approach has been field-tested six times on 267 students in various M.Ed. programs. The two major objectives are for students to become aware of the field of educational research and to develop basic skills in research for educational decision-making. Five major findings emerged from this case study: (1) students learn basic research concepts through conducting a study for educational decision-making; (2) students learn the total research process; (3) decision-making research must be formally taught and contrasted to scientific research; (4) educational leaders should become familiar with the field of educational research before taking courses in specific methodologies, research designs, or statistics; and (5) introductory educational research textbooks and materials should include both decision-making and scientific models of research so that educational leaders gain further insights into research processes and multiple uses of research. 2018. Format. Hum ENHANCING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE USING LSRW SKILLS BY EFFECTIVE TEACHING METHODS For RURAL STUDENTS – TELANGANA STATE

By

In the present scenario English communication skill teachers have always been concerned about the inadequacy of conventional methods of teaching communication skill in Indian rural area education systems. The teacher of 21st century should shed traditional concepts and techniques of classroom teaching and should adopt the recent and innovative teaching techniques. The four major skills of language learning, listening, speaking, reading and writing provide the right key to success. English teachers in rural areas often face the non-availability of required technical support and relevant atmosphere to teach English effectively. In teaching communication skills, teachers must be innovative, creative and resourceful with thorough knowledge of the subject and adopt new techniques. The urban students are exposed to a lot of methods of learning English. Whereas rural students have only limited exposure to learn English. The key part of learning procedure was attributed through memorization of vocabulary and translation of sentences. The focus is given that how students can put their learning into practice through effective communication skills. The aim of this paper is to showcase the use of innovative techniques for teaching English communication skills of rural area students.

24Diversifying Quranic Revision Methods Using Gamification-based Teaching Material For Tahfiz Education

By

This study discusses the development procedure of the global tahfiz game (GTG) as a teaching aid for the Quranic revision subject for tahfiz students based on the gamification concept. Comprehensive design and development research (DDR) was used as the research method. The analysis includes conceptual and material development, expert evaluation, testing, and the final product. The development of concepts and materials used in this gamification was based on the theoretical framework of mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics (MDA), with the application of tahfiz education elements. To examine the ability of GTG prototype to tackle the users’ needs, we have conducted the usability analysis. The expert teacher's mean score for the trial run on this gamification was high at 4.85. The trial run score for student participants was also high (4.45). The result demonstrated that most of the constructs are perceived at a high level by respondents. Thus, this indicated the high usability of GTG to be used as a teaching aid for a Quranic revision subject. The gamification of Quranic tahfiz based on board games has been finalized through recommendations and improvements based on the evaluation. The study findings are expected to be useful for educational institutions or researchers in developing teaching materials using the MDA framework for gamification, particularly in the field of Islamic education.

41Use Of Semantic And Clustering Methods : For Teaching English Vocabulary At Elementary Level

The study aims to find out the use of semantics and clustering methods in the ESL classroom to improve the vocabulary of ESL learners at the Elementary level. An Experimental study was conducted for this purpose. Two groups were managed i.e., i- control group and ii- Experimental group. The study was conducted in an Elementary public school. The total number of students selected for this purpose was 50 i.e., 25 for each group. The control group was taught with the traditional method and the experimental group was treated with different activities by using semantic and clustering methods in ESL classrooms for improving vocabulary. Pretest and posttest were conducted from both groups. Pretest for assessing their present knowledge of vocabulary and posttest for finding the difference between the groups. The result showed the experimental group’s performance was much more significant than that of the control group, which means the use of semantic and clustering methods for teaching vocabulary is useful.

43ERIC ED368124: A Comparison Of Teaching Methods In Freshman Composition Classes For Learning Disabled Students At San Antonio College.

By

This study compared the grade equivalents of students with learning disabilities in English composition classes using traditional lecture and word processing formats, to determine which format would best accommodate these students at San Antonio College (Texas). Students in the word processing class were instructed on the use of the computer system and were allowed use of the microcomputers in the English lab as part of their regular class and as an open writing lab. The study concluded that using a word processing format may not be an advantage over a traditional class in terms of academic success. The study recommends that counselors and faculty advisors continue to use students' preference as a guideline for placing them in various freshman composition formats, and consider the effect of word processing as a motivator in making recommendations to students with learning disabilities. Appendices provide data supporting the study. (Contains 22 references.) (JDD)

44ERIC ED162144: Methods And Materials For Teaching Occupational Survival Skills. Coping With Change.

By

This occupational skills learning module on coping with change is one of twelve making up a curriculum guide on the human aspects of working in organizations. The modules are designed for utilization at various educational levels ranging from high school to adult and continuing education, in either academic or vocational programs. This module is organized into seven sessions: (1) life in a changing world, (2) attitudes toward change, (3) accepting and rejecting changes, (4) learning to accept changes, (5), (6), and (7) using decision making techniques. Each session is arranged according to the following components: topic; objective; skills emphasized (a listing of specific skills, e.g., adjusting to work situations, knowing what is expected); notes on the importance of the session topic; list of materials and equipment needed (a copy of each student worksheet, transparency and/or handout is included); activity (description of how to conduct activity); and follow-up (discussion questions or activities to assist students in summarizing or evaluating the session topic). Teacher resources including the titles, sources, and descriptions of books, articles, and audiovisual aids conclude the module. A 16-item multiple choice test for use with this module is available in document CE 018 569. CE 018 556 describes the twelve modules and their development. (JH)

45ERIC ED037356: An Exploration Of Alternative Methods For Teaching Large Sections Of General Education Biology.

By

This project examined the effectiveness of the three-lecture-per-week method of teaching general education biology as compared with six alternative approaches involving various reductions in weekly class attendance. In three of the experimental groups lectures were reduced in number and supplemented by readings, quiz sessions or study guides; in the other three attendance at lectures was not required, students were assigned readings, met in seminars, or were tutored by other students. Tape recordings of lectures and review sessions were available to all students. Students in all groups were administrated a pre-course examination, two midterm achievement examinations, and final tests of content, attitude to science and scientists, and attitude to the course. No significant differences were found on the attitude measures. On the final content test all experimental groups achieved significantly higher than the control section. It was noted that the students' expressed approval of an instructional method was not always supported by their use of the method when available. (EB)

47ERIC EJ896251: Scaffolding The Science: Problem Based Strategies For Teaching Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Methods

By

Previous research has highlighted the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in multiple disciplinary settings, including medicine, teacher education, business, allied health, and the social sciences. Yet interdisciplinary educators have very little information about how to implement PBL in classrooms where multiple disciplines are represented. This paper offers practical strategies for the successful implementation of PBL in an interdisciplinary context in which learners have a limited knowledge base. In this paper we will a) highlight challenges to interdisciplinary teaching, b) demonstrate how PBL and traditional teaching techniques can be used in an interdisciplinary context, and c) discuss strategies to engage students in making scientific discoveries of their own. (Contains 1 table and 2 figures.)

50ERIC ED440977: Integrating Student-Centered Teaching Methods Into The First Year SMET Curriculum: The University Of Hartford Model For Institution-Wide Reform. Summative Evaluation.

By

In 1998, the Institution-Wide Reform project at the University of Hartford (Connecticut) was evaluated. The main focus of the project was the improvement of teaching and learning in the science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET) disciplines for freshmen. Documentation from various sources indicated that the program accomplished its goals at a reasonably high level. Participating faculty and administrators, who were interviewed by the principal evaluator, gave high marks for the project's design and implementation. Through workshops, seminars, and networking, faculty received professional development focused on the innovative teaching methods, including problem solving, collaboration, multiple intelligences, real world applications, and technology use. The faculty reported significant changes in student enrollment patterns (a preference by students to take courses from faculty members participating in the initiative) and increases in course retention rates. Faculty also reported a generally favorable impression among students in regards to innovative materials and methods. Faculty and administrators indicated that they valued the increased collaboration with colleagues. Recommendations are made to refine the elements necessary for systemic change. (Contains 36 graphs.)
