As a contribution toward understanding intellectual and moral growth in late adolescence in a pluralistic society, a developmental scheme representing an evolution in forms of thought and values was abstracted from students' reports of their experience. The raw data consisted of transcripts of recorded "open" interviews held with volunteer students at Radcliffe and Harvard Colleges at the end of each college year. Two samples were used. Of the 9 "positions" in the scheme's main line of development, the first 3 represent a simple right-wrong structure and their adjustment to diversity, the middle 3 trace the move to a generalized relativistic structure in which students face the issue of identity through personal commitment in a relative world, the last 3 represent stages in the growth of commitment. Included in the scheme are 3 conditions of delay or alienation expressing defection from the main line. Testing the validity of the scheme, judges rated interviews under 4 conditions. Within strict limits, the findings are valuable because they demonstrate the feasibility of assessing the epistemological and axiological development of late adolescents, and it validates a common theme of commitment in human development. A concern to many interested in the development and growth of teenagers is a serious deterioration in the messages of some rock music. Rock music is considered a regenerative and revolutionary act by artists in the music industry--the energy center of a new culture. The psychological impact and meaning of rock music for adolescents is addressed as a joint function of the type of music and the social context in which it is heard. Research questions investigated were (1) Does rock/rap music have a measurable influence on teenagers? (2) Do adolescents who prefer this type of music have a higher incidence of negative behaviors? (3) Is high exposure to rock/rap music associated with high levels of involvement in the behavior and thought patterns advocated by the lyrics of rock/rap music? A review of literature, definitions, and assumptions are presented. Subjects were high school juniors and seniors from a rural area of West Virginia. Questionnaire data was analyzed by ANOVA. Results reveal an association between rock/rap music and suicide ideation, sexual permissiveness, and drug/alcohol abuse. Four recommendations are presented. The questionnaire is appended. This study investigated 30 preservice teachers' journals for examples of the knowledge base for teaching, expectations for professional collaboration, and depth of reflectivity when discussing these issues. Content analysis was conducted on six journal questions intended to generate thought patterns in relation to professionalism in teaching. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression were used to examine the data. Analysis revealed a dearth of substantive examples of the new knowledge base and collaboration. However, when examples were evident, they consistently predicted depth of reflectivity, suggesting an integrated growth of professionalism in the preservice teachers. (Contains 31 references.) Charlotte Turner Smith (1749 – 1806) was an English poet and novelist. She initiated a revival of the English sonnet, helped establish the conventions of Gothic fiction, and wrote political novels of sensibility.<br /><br />It was in 1784, in debtor's prison with her husband Benjamin, that she wrote and published her first work, Elegiac Sonnets. The work achieved instant success, allowing Charlotte to pay for their release from prison. Smith's sonnets helped initiate a revival of the form and granted an aura of respectability to her later novels.<br /><br />Stuart Curran, the editor of Smith's poems, has written that Smith is "the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic". She helped shape the "patterns of thought and conventions of style" for the period. Romantic poet William Wordsworth was the most affected by her works. He said of Smith in the 1830s that she was "a lady to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered". By the second half of the nineteenth century, however, Smith was largely forgotten.

Captain John Smith (c. January 1580 – June 21, 1631) Admiral of New England was an English soldier, explorer, and author. He was knighted for his services to Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania. He is remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and his brief association with the Virginia Indian girl Pocahontas during an altercation with the Powhatan Confederacy and her father, Chief Powhatan. He was a leader of the Virginia Colony (based at Jamestown) between September 1608 and August 1609, and led an exploration along the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay.<br /><br />His books and maps may have been as important as his deeds, as they encouraged more Englishmen and women to follow the trail he had blazed and to colonize the New World. He gave the name New England to that region, and encouraged people with the comment, "Here every man may be master and owner of his owne labour and land...If he have nothing but his hands, he may...by industrie quickly grow rich."<br /><br />In 1614, Smith returned to the Americas in a voyage to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts Bay. He named the region "New England". He made two attempts in 1614 and 1615 to return to the same coast. First a storm dismasted his ship. Smith escaped after weeks of captivity and made his way back to England, where he published an account of his two voyages as A Description of New England. He never left England again. After the Lensman series became popular, Smith took his Triplanetary story and turned it into the first of the Lensman series, using it as a prequel to give the back story for the protaganists in the Lensmen series. He added 6 new chapters, doubling it in size and it's really a different book from the serialized novel, being published 14 years after the first. It was put into Gutenberg just last year.<br /><br /> The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long eugenics project of the super-intelligences of the Arisia. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch enemy, the Eddore. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's (Gharlane of Eddore) reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two and Three. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, two very important members of the eugenics project, are introduced. They will play the leading roles in the next story, First Lensman.
