By

The history of the involvement of linguistics in the teaching of languages is presented in terms of a description of contributing events, a pinpointing of important programs, and a running bibliography. Some remarks on the status of foreign language study in the 20's and 30's preface a discussion of the far-reaching effects of the U.S. Army's adoption of the American Council of Learned Societies' Intensive Language Program. The pamphlet concludes with observations on the teaching of English as a second language. (AF)

145. Humanities Linguistics In Second Language Teaching Patel Bhavikaben M.

By

This paper is to help students/teachers acquire the basic language skills: speaking (selection of appropriate sounds and their organization), understanding (identification of sounds; decoding sounds as meaning), writing (selection of appropriate graphological symbols and their organization) and reading (identification of symbols; decoding symbols as meaning). In every language teaching and language planning situation we set up certain objectives in terms of which we decide which of the skills (active/passive) are to be given the highest priority. Language teachers have begun to feel that linguistics has failed to provide them with the help they seek for improving both content and methodology in their chosen field. The real fact is that linguistics is a science. It seeks to study how language works. Linguistics per se has different aims from language teaching. It is surely not concerned with providing evidence about the most effective procedures for language teaching. It does not have any techniques of language teaching to offer; it has no ‘do-it-yourself’ kit of classroom procedures to display.

By

This article presents the results of a study on the language learning and teaching beliefs of graduate students enrolled in an applied linguistics course in a language teaching program. Ten participants completed a questionnaire at the start of the course and another at the end; their responses were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Following the course, changes were identified in the participants' beliefs about the difficulty of learning a second language and their goals for their future students.

By

This paper discusses the need for and importance of field-based experiences in the training of prospective second language teachers prior to student teaching. Several types of field-based experiences are described: (1) experiences actually based on schools, including observation and participation; (2) teaching experiences based on the college or university campus with high school pupils or college students; (3) introduction to classroom experience through the use of videotape recordings, and (4) practice-teaching programs in other countries. Sixteen characteristics of an effective program for training second-language teachers are described, and the need for more research in the area of second language field-based experiences is emphasized. By

The applicability of linguistics to the work of the second language teacher is stressed here. The goals of language teaching are discussed, as well as the teacher's need to be competent in three areas--his subject, educational psychology, and teaching methodology. The pertinence of different linguistic theories and subfields to competence in these three areas is suggested. (AF)

31ERIC ED090799: Joining Linguistics With Other Fields In The Service Of Foreign Language Teaching.

By

The study of language is an interdisciplinary field, since language can be seen to embody characteristics of psychology, linguistics, literature, sociology, anthropology, education, and the sciences. Teachers of language can no longer afford to ignore useful information from any of the underlying disciplines. If language teaching is to be assisted by these disciplines, the following conditions must be met: (1) the various fields involved must admit that they all have something to learn from each other; (2) these several fields must be willing to communicate their knowledge in such a way that it sees life from the learner's viewpoint; (3) they must meet other disciplines halfway; (4) they must be less concerned with internal orthodoxy and more about the long range success of their clients; and (5) they must realize they are all in a constant state of change. There is now evidence that the various academic fields are opening up to fresh ideas from allied disciplines. Thus, the task of joining linguistics with other fields in the service of foreign language instruction no longer seems farfetched. The advent of sociolinguistics has helped crystalize this interdisciplinary trend. Because of its focus on variability, sociolinguistics makes educators more aware of the importance of the setting and the lifestyle from which a student comes. (Author/PM)

34ERIC ED041255: Foreign Language Teaching And New Directions In Applied Linguistics.

By

The present paper, a general survey of modern foreign language teaching as it is influenced by applied linguistics, discusses some of the outstanding works and foremost theories in the areas of psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, programmed instruction, and contrastive analysis. In discussing the methodology involved in foreign language teaching, the author feels the best approach is an eclectic one: the teacher should attempt to use what is best for him and refuse to subscribe to any single narrow approach. He must keep an open mind to new ideas, but not be so impressionable that he is fascinated by anything new. The need for teacher training in linguistics, and in the related fields of psychology, sociology, literature, and audio-visual education, is pointed out. (A short annotated reference list concludes the paper.) (AMM)

39ERIC ED102878: Using Community Resources In Foreign Language Teaching. CAL-ERIC/CLL Series On Languages And Linguistics, No. 7.

By

The objective of this paper is to show how the resources of the community can be incorporated into a foreign language program. The term "community," as used here, refers to the educational component of a district, local political organizations, religious groups, cultural organizations, professional organizations, civic organizations, community and public service agencies, parents, and students. The first step to involving the community in foreign language teaching and learning is a survey to determine exactly what assets are available. Questionnaires can elicit information about areas of interest from students, school staff, and other community members. (Sample questionnaires are appended to the paper.) Once the surveys have been completed, the foreign language department can organize the following types of activities: (1) class trips, (2) foreign language fairs, (3) volunteer work, (4) work-study programs, (5) contests, (6) community welcoming committees, and (7) lecture and consulting programs. (PMP)

1Caroline the Illustrious, Vol. 1

By

Book's cover

Caroline moved to England from Hanover when her father-in-law became George I and her husband Prince of Wales. She had a tumultuous relationship with the King, who was unpopular and ineffective. When her husband became George II, the relationship between the King and his people was even worse, a situation his Queen Consort attempted to mediate. For the ten years from his accession until her death, it was Caroline who, in effect, ruled the country. Wilkins argues that, apart from Elizabeth I, Caroline was the most powerful woman in English history. - Summary by LynneT

3By Desert Ways to Baghdad

By

Book's cover

Every age witnesses the birth of some great soul. Sometimes events bring these people to the attention of the world. More often than not, they alter the lives around them, then pass on quietly. Such a soul belonged to the author of this cherished book. There was nothing in Louisa Jebb's comfortable Victorian youth to indicate she would one day take to the saddle and pen one of the most eloquent equestrian travel books ever written. Yet in the early years of the 20th century, Jebb set out with a female companion to cross the Turkish Empire on horseback. To say they were unprepared to become Long Riders would be an understatement. Neither of them could speak the local language. Furthermore, both wore cumbersome full-length skirts and rode side-saddles. They were, in a word, enthusiastic amateurs who believed courage and common sense would see them through. Remarkably, it did. Having hired a picturesque guide and reliable horses, they set out to explore the secret corners of the Sultan's empire. What they discovered were guarded harems and regal Pashas, fabled rivers and a desert world of intense beauty. If Jebb rode into Turkey expecting to find adventure, she found it. Yet she discovered something else - nomadic freedom. It is her personal observations about this subject that set "By Desert Ways to Baghdad and Damascus" apart from other equestrian travel books. "In the untravelled parts of the East you reign supreme, there is no need to go about securely chained to a gold watch. Ignore Time, and he is your servant," she observed wisely. Sadly, revolution and death soon swept across this fabled land, wiping away the kingdom of the Turkish Caliphs and laying the foundations for the grief which enshrouds this unhappy part of the world today. Upon her return to "civilization" the author lamented about what she had found, then lost. "Last night we were dirty, isolated and free, tonight we are clean, sociable and trammelled. Last night the setting sun's final message was burnt into us. Tonight the sunset passed unheeded as we sit imprisoned and oppressed by the confining walls of Damascus Palace Hotel. We are no longer princesses whose hands are kissed. We are now judged by the cost of our raiment." Few books contain as many great abiding truths as this one does. - Summary by Goodreads
