12ERIC ED445548: Involving English Language Learners In Community-Connected Learning. Perspectives On Policy And Practice.

This issue brief considers how to involve English language learners in community-connected learning, a set of strategies to engage young people in learning experiences beyond the classroom. Such strategies include internships at work sites, and project-based learning in classrooms. In successful community-connected learning strategies, students come to understand how they might pursue and expand upon their own interests, and to observe and work alongside adult experiences in a variety of workplaces and occupations. Specifically, they advance their language skills by interacting with English-speaking adults in the workplace, experience being treated as adults, participate in learning as an active rather than passive process, earn wages while charting long-range career plans, and gain opportunities for valuable job experience and learn about academic options at post-secondary institutions. Other issues considered include the following: effective strategies for involving English language learners in internships and project-based learning and the best role of community supervisors and high schools. A check list of potential barriers to English language learners involvement in community-connected learning is matched with specific suggestions for addressing these barriers. This issue brief considers how to involve English language learners in community-connected learning, a set of strategies to engage young people in learning experiences beyond the classroom. Such strategies include internships at work sites, and project-based learning in classrooms. In successful community-connected learning strategies, students come to understand how they might pursue and expand upon their own interests, and to observe and work alongside adult experiences in a variety of workplaces and occupations. Specifically, they advance their language skills by interacting with English-speaking adults in the workplace, experience being treated as adults, participate in learning as an active rather than passive process, earn wages while charting long-range career plans, and gain opportunities for valuable job experience and learn about academic options at post-secondary institutions. Other issues considered include the following: effective strategies for involving English language learners in internships and project-based learning and the best role of community supervisors and high schools. A check list of potential barriers to English language learners involvement in community-connected learning is matched with specific suggestions for addressing these barriers. 15ERIC ED080415: History In English Secondary Schools. A Review Of Practice And A Programme For Development: The Schools Council Project In History 13-16 At The University Of Leeds. Occasional Paper #73-2.

The Schools Council Project investigated current practices in teaching history, identified objectives and obstacles and carried out a program in trial schools based upon conclusions drawn from the investigation. An experimental framework for syllabus construction based first on the conceptual structure of history and second, on a taxonomy of educational objectives was abandoned in favor of a framework founded on "the uses of history for the adolescents." For example, units within the framework correspond to the specific uses of history (explain the present) and bear general relation to some of the other uses, (understand human development). Thus greater variety of content and ways of looking at history with an emphasis on inquiry in depth and the development of investigative skills were identified as educational objectives to be pursued in the implementation of the project. Since examinations were regarded by the teachers as of paramount priority, the Project suggested an examination program based on various methods of assessment which test historical skills as well as historical knowledge. The recommendations of the council will be carried out (September 1973) in trial schools. Teaching materials will be produced and tested. Case studies of the individual schools will operate as the mode of evaluation of the Program. (JRB)

In "The English Patient: English Grammar and teaching in the Twentieth Century", Hudson and Walmsley (2005) contend that the decline of grammar in schools was linked to a similar decline in English universities, where no serious research or teaching on English grammar took place. This article argues that such a decline was due not only to a lack of research, but also because it suited educational policies of the time. It applies Bernstein's theory of pedagogic discourse (1990 & 1996) to the case study of the debate surrounding the introduction of a national curriculum in English in England in the late 1980s and the National Literacy Strategy in the 1990s, to demonstrate the links between academic theory and educational policy.

This document is Part III of a research study examining special education service delivery for limited English proficient (LEP) Hispanic students who have been placed in programs for the learning-disabled, speech handicapped, and mentally retarded. The objectives of Part III of this study were: (1) identify the characteristics of Hispanic students referred, assessed, and placed in speech and/or language handicapped programs; (2) examine district policies and practices governing special education services for LEP students; (3) determine implications for improving policies and practices in the referral, assessment, and placement of these students; and (4) suggest future research directions. Speech and or/language handicapped LEP Hispanic students (n=124) in grades 2-5 in three large urban school districts in central Texas provided the sample. Descriptive statistical procedures were used to analyze data on student demography, referral, eligibility, speech and language evaluations, and placement. Results indicated that the procedures used by speech and language pathologists in the identification and diagnosis of communication disorders virtually ignored students' LEP status. Analysis of school district policies showed that little information was provided concerning safeguards to protect LEP students from being inappropriately placed in special education. Preliminary recommendations for delineating policy and improving practice are offered. A 90-item reference list is included. (JDD)

A discussion of pronunciation instruction in English as a second language begins with comments on preparing for pronunciation work in the classroom and goes on to examine the rhythm of English and the characteristics of intonation. The chapter on preparing for pronunciation work focuses on: accounting for learner variables, motivating learning, identifying realistic objectives, diagnosing proficiency, the need for a systematic approach, focusing listening opportunities, developing effective listening skills and a comfortable level of fluency. The chapter on English rhythm examines what rhythm is, introducing how it functions in English, teaching syllable length, pauses and thought groups, and rhythm and linking sounds. The third chapter defines intonation and looks at teaching students to hear pitch changes, using pitch to separate clauses and phrases, and the qualities of focus, prominence, and contrast. Each chapter includes exercises. Pronunciation instruction for individual sounds is not discussed. A sample diagnostic checklist and sample texts marked for intonation are included. (MSE)

"English--a portrait of current practice" is one in a series of portraits by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE), depicting current practice in key aspects of the Scottish curriculum. The portrait series is a recent initiative by HMIE, flowing from the "Improving Scottish Education" report. It is intended to promote improvements in Scottish education by drawing on the findings of inspections to stimulate reflection and debate. From time to time, portraits will be enhanced to include case studies of effective practice, usually to coincide with a good practice event in that subject. This is an enhanced portrait. An important purpose of the portrait series is to relate existing pedagogy and curricular provision to the aspirations of "Curriculum for Excellence" (CfE). By stimulating debate about teaching for effective learning, the portraits will challenge us all to review the extent to which current practice is successfully promoting the four capacities in all young learners. The series sits alongside "How Good Is Our School? The Journey to Excellence" in focusing on the two key dimensions of excellence: (1) engaging young people in the highest quality learning activities; and (2) focusing on outcomes and maximising success for all learners. This portrait is based on evidence obtained from HMIE visits to schools during the period 2004 to 2007. These visits included both general inspections and other visits to examine effective practice. Inspectors evaluated the quality of learning, teaching, meeting learners' needs and achievement. The portrait also draws upon the work shared at the HMIE conference in June 2006, "Good Practice in English, 3-18." It illustrates ways in which effective teachers work successfully with pupils to develop each of the four capacities of "Curriculum for Excellence." It identifies how teachers might contribute more to developing successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. In particular, teachers can help young people to achieve their potential by ensuring that they build meaningfully on prior learning. They can provide regular opportunities for learners to develop skills in critical thinking, and challenging contexts within which learners can apply these skills. Across the stages, teachers can ensure that children and pupils use and develop their literacy skills to support all of their learning, within and beyond school. (Contains 5 footnotes.)

There is a longstanding recognition in the field of language education that teachers must continually reshape their knowledge of teaching and learning. This knowledge is developed initially in teacher education programs, then becomes part of teachers' education throughout their careers through reflective practice. Reflective practice occurs when teachers consciously take on the role of reflective practitioner, subject their own beliefs about teaching and learning to critical analysis, take responsibility for their actions in the classroom, and continue to improve their teaching practice. Although it may be unreasonable to expect all teachers to engage in reflection at every moment or stage of their teaching, certain activities can benefit teachers at various stages. This brief describes the theoretical basis for and research on reflective practice and suggests three approaches for teachers of adult English language learners to incorporate reflective practice into their teaching: engaging in action research projects, writing in a teaching journal, and joining a teacher development group. Teachers can engage in these reflective activities at any stage of their careers and at any time of the teaching day to continue constructing their own personal theories of teaching and improve their instructional practice.

The department of English at West Chester University, Pennsylvania provides a laboratory for examining the situation of composition in a department that has documented its dedication to a unified study of English based on attention to reading and writing. The department adopted a "Statement of Coherence" that signals a dialectic: the fact that the department needed such a statement suggests a centrifugal tendency, but the fact that the department made such a statement suggests a willingness to achieve wholeness. The traditional literary faculty continue to command resources that significantly exceed what the compositionists can muster for the tasks of teaching students and enhancing that teaching through research and new hiring. But the real answer to the question of whether multidisciplinarity recognizes composition as an equal participant in the mission of the department comes in "cuentos": in stories, in the day-to-day events of the department and in the way those events are reframed as they are retold. One such story comes from the department's "Outcomes Assessment Retreat." The groups established to draft each subdiscipline's outcomes mirrored the implicit hierarchy of the department, and the attempt to produce mission-reflecting outcomes revealed the ongoing dialectic between the centrifugal and cohering tendencies of the department. Two cliches provide an adequate peroration: talk is cheap, and actions speak louder than words. Appended are the English Department's Statement of Coherence and Mission statement, and the Composition Group's Outcomes for the General Education Composition Program. (RS)

Ram Alley, or Merry Tricks, is a bawdy comedy by Lording Barry, a contemporary of Shakespeare. The production bankrupted Barry, landed him in debtor's jail, and set him off on a life of piracy. The action of Ram Alley takes place in a disreputable London lane where lawyers, lords, and ladies rub shoulders with prostitutes and vagabonds. One 19th century editor complained that it was "full of gross passages, allusions, and innuendoes," but more recent commentators have seen past the risque gags and recognised the play's wit, complexity, and intelligence. 2Family of Love

The Family of Love is an early Jacobean city comedy, first published in 1608. Published anonymously, the play was long attributed to Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, although more recent scholarship suggests that Lording Barry may be the sole author. The play satirises the supposed sexual lasciviousness of the Familia Caritatis or "Family of Love," the religious sect founded by Henry Nicholis in the 16th century. <br /><br /> Maria is in love with Gerardine but her uncle, Glister the physician, opposes the match. Gerardine pretends to depart for a long ocean voyage, leaving a trunk containing his earthly possessions to Maria, but when Maria opens the trunk she finds Gerardine inside. Meanwhile, Glister cheats on his wife with the Familist wife of Purge the apothecary. Two dim-witted gallants, Gudgeon and Lipsalve, try to bed every woman they meet and want nothing more than to gain access to the secretive Familist Meeting House, which rumor has it is a bastion of free-love.
