This study empirically investigated the validity and utility of the stratified adaptive computerized testing model (stradaptive]developed by Weiss (1973). The model presents a tailored testing strategy based on Binet IQ measurement theory and Lord's (1972) modern test theory. Nationally normed School and College Ability Test Verbal analogy items (SCAT-V) were used to construct an item pool. Item difficulty and discrimination indices were rescaled to normal ogive parameters on 249 items. Freshmen volunteers at Florida State University were randomly assigned to stradaptive or conventional test groups. Both groups were tested via cathode-ray-tube (CRT) terminals coupled to a Control Data Corporation 6500 computer. The conventional subjects took a SCAT-V test, while the stradaptive group took individually tailored tests drawn from the same item pool. Results showed significantly higher reliability for the stradaptive group, and equivalent validity indices between stradaptive and conventional groups. Three stradaptive testing strategies averaged 19.2, 26.5, and 31.5 items per subject as compared with 48.4 items per conventional subject. A 50% reduction from conventional test length produced an equal precision of measurement for stradaptive subjects. Item latency comparisons showed the stradaptive group required significantly longer per item than conventional group members. It is recommended that time rather then number of items be used in future adaptive research as a dependent variable. (Author/DEP)

All teachers are aware of the wide range of abilities that exist within most standard Australian primary school classrooms. Many of these schools implement structures such as ability grouping and/or streaming to help meet the needs of this diverse group of learners; but does ability grouping meet these needs? The number of studies that have looked at the pros and cons of ability grouping is overwhelming, and they conclusively prove one thing, that the research is inconclusive. Working as a student services officer teaching mathematics to small ability groups has prompted the author to consider his own perspectives on this topic, and more importantly to consider how he can make this type of instruction more effective. This article looks at the justification for maintaining small ability groups and the implications to achieving success.

Covariance structural analyses (LISREL) were used to examine latent mean differences in general self-concept (SC), academic SC, English SC, and mathematics SC between low-track and high-track high school students. The study report is preceded by a theoretical model of adolescent self-concept and discussions of academic track as a social referent and as a basis for social comparison. Study subjects included 248 low-track and 582 high-track students in grades 11 and 12 enrolled in two suburban high schools in suburban Ottawa (Canada). Assumptions of invariant SC measurements and structure were tested prior to the analysis of latent mean structures. Twelve self-report SC instruments were used in the study. Findings reveal significant differences in academic, English, and mathematics SCs only. Inconsistencies in measurement and structure of SC across track were also found. Findings illustrate the possible interplay of compensatory factors in the formation of SC, and indicate that low-ability students place more importance on their social and/or physical competencies, rather than on their academic competencies. The purpose of this Monte Carlo study was to evaluate the relative accuracy of T. Warm's weighted likelihood estimate (WLE) compared to maximum likelihood estimate (MLE), expected a posteriori estimate (EAP), and maximum a posteriori estimate (MAP), using the generalized partial credit model (GPCM) and graded response model (GRM) under a variety of computerized adaptive testing conditions. In general, for all four theta estimation methods, conditional and overall bias, standard error (SE), and root mean square error (RMSE) decreased as test length, test reliability, and item bank size increased. The magnitudes of the differences among the dependent variables decreased as the values of the independent variables increased. For both models, WLE outperformed MLE in terms of all the dependent variables studied, and WLE performed better than the Bayesian methods in terms of bias. MLE had less bias than both Bayesian methods. In general, for the fixed length test, both the GPCM and the GRM models, estimation method, and test length has some impact on bias, SE, and RMSE. But, the model factor had the greatest impact on RMSE, accounting for 31.2% of the total variance of RMSE under the GRM. For the fixed test reliability, the model factor had almost no influence on bias, SE, and RMSE under the GRM.(Contains 4 tables and 24 references.) (Author/SLD)

Four monte carlo simulation studies of Owen's Bayesian sequential procedure for adaptive mental testing were conducted. Whereas previous simulation studies of this procedure have concentrated on evaluating it in terms of the correlation of its test scores with simulated ability in a normal population, these four studies explored a number of additional properties, both in a normally distributed population and in a distribution-free context. Study 1 replicated previous studies with finite item pools, but examined such properties as the bias of estimate, mean absolute error, and correlation of test length with ability. Studies 2 and 3 examined the same variables in a number of hypothetical infinite item pools, investigating the effects of item discriminating power, guessing, and variable vs. fixed test length. Study 4 investigated some properties of the Bayesian test scores as latent trait estimators, under three different configurations (regressions of item discrimination on item difficulty) of item pools. The properties of interest included the regression of latent trait estimates on actual trait levels, the conditional bias of such estimates, the information curve of the trait estimates, and the relationship of test length to ability level. The results of these studies indicated that the ability estimates derived from the Bayesian test strategy were highly correlated with ability level. However, the ability estimates were also highly correlated with number of items administered, were nonlinearly biased, and provided measurements which were not of equal precision at all levels of ability. Ability estimates yielded by one of the two stage tests were more reliable and had a slightly higher relationship to underlying ability than did the conventional test scores. One of the two-stage tests yielded an approximately horizontal information function, indicating more constant precision of measurement for individuals at all levels of ability. The conventional test and the second two-stage test yielded information functions peaked at the mean ability level but dropping off at more extreme levels of ability; however, the second two-stage test provided more information than the conventional test at all levels of ability. The findings of the study were interpreted as indicating the potential superiority of two-stage tests in comparison to conventional tests. Several improvements in the construction of two-stage tests are suggested for use in further research. (Author)

Previous literature on children's visual pattern perception has suggested that preschool children may process hierarchical forms in a manner different from that of older children and adults. Data from some studies suggested that children are holistic processors of pattern information, while other studies characterized children as piecemeal processors. In this study, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-year-olds and adults were asked to draw four different hierarchical stimuli, two composed of letters and two of geometric forms. In the memory condition, each stimulus was presented for 5 seconds and then removed from view. The subject was then asked to draw it. This procedure continued until all four forms had been drawn. The control condition was identical, except that each model remained in view until the subject was finished drawing it. Results indicated that, contrary to earlier reports in the literature, younger children, like the older children, reproduced the global and local levels of the hierarchical forms with equal facility in both the copy condition and the memory condition. This study examines 4-year-olds' ability to search and find a missing object, a complex problem-solving task dependent on remembering events, logically deducing the possible subset of hiding places, and implementing situation-dependent search strategies. Sixty-four children recruited from two day care centers in a small midwestern city searched for a lost object on two occasions. On the first occasion, half of the children searched a three dimensional table-top model for a missing item after watching a sequence in which a puppet lost the item. The other children searched under naturalistic conditions, looking in a familiar environment for an object that had been lost while they put away some toys. Half the children were questioned about their search behaviors, after which all children participated in the second search task--a table-top search. In the first task, more searches took place in locations bounded by the last place the object was seen and the first place in which it was discovered missing if children searched in the naturalistic rather than the table top condition. In the second task, children searched the "critical area" more often if they were queried about their search behavior in the first task or if they searched intially in the naturalistic task. The results are discussed in terms of factors affecting the development of problem-solving competence. Three pages of references and tables of data are included. (DR)

The construct validity of four self-concept (SC) traits (general SC, academic SC, English SC, mathematics SC), as measured by three different scales (Likert, semantic differential, Guttman) for low- (n=252) and high-track (n=588) Canadian high school students, was assessed using both the Campbell-Fiske criteria, and a comparison of hierarchically nested covariance structure models. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to model hypotheses related to convergent and discriminant validity and to test directly equivalencies of traits and methods. Findings indicate that assumptions of invariant construct validity cannot be taken for granted; differences in both the measurement and structure of SC were found. Academic SC, as measured by the Likert and Guttman scales, was problematic for the high track. These scales appeared to elicit different types of responses from high and low ability students. Tests of invariance formally confirmed this result. Discriminant validity of the trait factors was also less clear for the high track, but this may have been a measurement problem. Method bias was clearly more evident for the high than for the low track. Method bias effects for each scale type, as well as all but one trait correlation, were found to be noninvariant. The theory of stabilizer quantum error correction allows us to actively stabilize quantum states and simulate ideal quantum operations in a noisy environment. It is critical is to correctly diagnose noise from its syndrome and nullify it accordingly. However, hardware that performs quantum error correction itself is inevitably imperfect in practice. Here, we show that stabilizer codes possess a built-in capability of correcting errors not only on quantum information but also on faulty syndromes extracted by themselves. Shor's syndrome extraction for fault-tolerant quantum computation is naturally improved. This opens a path to realizing the potential of stabilizer quantum error correction hidden within an innocent looking choice of generators and stabilizer operators that have been deemed redundant.

Hella et al. (PODC 2012, Distributed Computing 2015) identified seven different models of distributed computing - one of which is the port-numbering model - and provided a complete classification of their computational power relative to each other. However, one of their simulation results involves an additive overhead of $2\Delta-2$ communication rounds, and it was not clear, if this is actually optimal. In this paper we give a positive answer: there is a matching linear-in-$\Delta$ lower bound. This closes the final gap in our understanding of the models, with respect to the number of communication rounds.

This article is from BMC Public Health , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Most rural homes in Bangladesh have ponds nearby to serve as household water sources. As a result children of all ages are exposed to water bodies on a daily basis. Children learn to swim early in childhood from peers and relatives in a natural process that involves play and structured learning. In a large, national injury survey in Bangladesh, the ability to swim was associated with reduced risk of drowning. This study determines the prevalence of swimming ability in children in Bangladesh as a step in assessing whether this is a potential component of a national drowning prevention program. Methods: A descriptive study design using a subset of a national sample survey determined the prevalence of naturally acquired swimming ability (NASA) reported by children of rural and urban communities in Bangladesh. A total of 2,598 households (1,999 rural and 599 urban) housing 4,336 children (2,263 male and 2,073 female) aged 5-17 years were chosen from 4 randomly selected districts using multistage random sampling. NASA was defined as the ability to cross 25 meters of water deeper than the child’s height using any body movement for self-propulsion. Results: Reported NASA was greater in males (55.6%) than females (47.9%) and among rural children (57.8%) than urban children (25.5%) for children 5-17 years. The proportion reporting NASA increased with increasing age. At age 5, 5.8% of males and 6.3% of females reported NASA, rising to 84.3% of males and 70.7% of females by age 17. By age 17, 83.1% of rural children and 57.5% of urban children reported NASA. Conclusion: Most children in Bangladesh report being able to swim 25 meters and learning it by middle childhood. Reported NASA is higher for males than females and for rural children than urban children. High rates of swimming appear to be achievable in the absence of pools and a swim-teaching industry. This may facilitate development of a low cost, national drowning prevention program with swimming an integral part.

The space telescope can plan a key role in searching for and investigating the contents of extra-solar planetary systems. For about 90 nearby stars, positional variations due to major planets would be well within the astrometric capability of the wide-field/planetary camera system. Since the centroids of star images will be determined to within a milliarcsecond down to 22d magnitude, there will be an abundance of reference stars at very small angular distances from each planetary system candidate, and they will have small enough motions of their own to provide a reference frame of the stability required.
