The selected and annotated bibliography contains 22 book entries and nine entries on films and teaching media dealing with sign language. Each entry is described and its usage analyzed. Asterisks precede new titles. (JM)

Exercises and activities for incorporating career education into the secondary school curriculum (10-12) are contained in this teacher's manual. Activities are developed for language arts (112), mathematics (32), science (21), social studies (49), related arts/fine arts (61), and guidance (41). An index of titles is included for each subject area. Teaching activities are written in a format which matches specific goals of school subjects with career education concerns (curriculum focus). This bibliography includes textbooks useful for the teaching of written skills in English as a second language to college and university students. The major emphasis of the texts listed is the teaching of writing but some contain material on reading as well. The first section contains only texts designed specifically for second language use. The second section contains texts prepared for native speakers of English but which have been used or seem useful for non-natives. The list has been prepared from materials known to the compilers, published reviews and listings in the ERIC system. Detailed information is provided for each text listed to give the reader an idea of its contents, purpose, level, and approach. Both sections of the bibliography are arranged alphabetically and no attempt has been made to recommend certain texts over others. (Author)

Recordings are not a new educational "gadget" to high-school language arts teachers. For more than a score of years some teachers have been using a few recordings of literature with varying degrees of success. Today, the extensive range of recordings available, the professional quality of the performances, and the fidelity of the reproduction increase the probability of success for the teacher who is interested in using recordings to foster attitudes of appreciation and to develop skills of communication. This bulletin presents descriptions of ways teachers are now using commercial recordings in various units of instruction to develop understanding and enjoyment of poetry, drama, and fiction, and other literature to teach intelligent, critical listening; to encourage students to study language as a social process which leads to cooperation, approval, disagreement, or conflict; and to promote continuous developmental growth in oral and written communication skills needed by youth and adults in America today. The bibliography of records includes nearly 500 titles. Most of the records listed have been produced since the end of World War II. Except for the sections on International Selections, Historical Selections, and Religious Selections, recordings are grouped by type of literature: Poetry, Drama, Biography, and others. No appraisal of recordings is offered as it is believed that students may engage in a profitable learning exercise by making their own selections with the help of the teacher. (Contains 4 footnotes.) The documents listed in this selected bibliography on language teaching and learning appeared in the January through November 1974 issues of Research in Education (RIE). The entries are divided into three categories: (1) documents concerning language acquisition and development, (2) documents dealing primarily with the theoretical aspects of teaching and learning foreign languages, and (3) documents containing instructional materials and describing language teaching methods. Categories 2 and 3 are not mutually exclusive since many of the entries contain information of both a theoretical and practical nature. This annotated bibliography consists of materials in the ERIC system that deal with teaching English as a second language to persons who are illiterate, or functionally illiterate, in their native language. The items in the bibliography were obtained by means of a computer search of "Currnt Index to Journals in Education" and "Resources in Education." Although these materials were chosen for their focus on illiterate or functionally illiterte nonspeakers of English, many of the items are also applicable to other aspects of TESL and adult basic education. The 44 ites cited here are grouped into four subsections: (1) teacher training (preservice and inservice); (2) programs (descriptions, evaluations, and related research); (3) instructional and resource materials; and (4) theory and methodology. This bibliography contains some 2,000 articles on empirical investigation and theoretical considerations covering the topic of students' conceptions entered before September 1990. PUblications in journals, books, working papers, and contributions to conferences are included. English, German, and French publications, and ones in other languages are contained in the bibliography. The bibliography is divided into nine groups: (1) general considerations concerning research in this area; (2) everyday notions and scientific notions; (3) development of notions in the history of science as compared to development of notions of individuals; (4) language and notions; (5) methods of investigations; (6) investigations of students' notions; (7) instruction taking students' notions into account; (8) investigations of teachers notions; and (9) notions and teacher training. The entries include the author's name, year of publication, title, place of publication, and a set of keywords that help the reader to categorize the articles. Keywords indicate the group of the article (1-9), physics, chemistry, or biology, and further areas or concepts. Articles dealing with conceptions of the teaching and learning process, conceptions of science, conceptions on the use of science for technology and society, and empirical studies in which gender differences are investigated are also indicated by keywords. An author index, an appendix that contains publications added during the preparation of the present edition from October to December 1990, a second appendix that contains entries from another bibliography not listed in this bibliography, and a list of keywords are included. Although there is a substantial research knowledge base in the field of teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), this topical bibliography and commentary suggests that much misinformation still persists. The articles that form the basis for this topical bibliography and commentary agree on the approach that is most effective for ESL acquisition: child relevant materials and conversation that focus on content and concepts. Another important aspect is peer collaboration and the fostering of an environment in which real conversation can take place. The articles summarized in this topical bibliography and commentary also agree that student language acquisition is a social and cultural as well as a cognitive process.
