2ERIC EJ981822: A Study On The Critical Perspectives Of Graduate Students On E-Knowledge Sources

By

Internet and electronic databases today offer the opportunity to reach an unlimited amount of information in a short time. Owing to this advantage, the Internet has become an important provider of "e-knowledge" and a basic tool in the process of research. It is essential that research undertaken by academic students on the internet should not ignore the critical approach. Therefore, this qualitative case study aimed to examine the attitudes of graduate students in Turkey towards the sources of "e-knowledge" in the framework of critical thinking. The data collection techniques included focus groups and interviews. The study was undertaken with 23 volunteer graduate students from a Faculty of Education. In order to reveal the general theme and its pattern, the data were analyzed by both content analysis and descriptive analysis. The results showed that the students mostly used the internet as a source of knowledge for their assignments and research. The most prominent reasons for this included the need to use time efficiently and the mass of information that the internet offers. Most of the participants reported to follow critical criteria, such as testing the accuracy of information and reliability of sources.

3NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900020816: [NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Paper 2:] External Information Sources And Aerospace R&D: The Use And Importance Of Technical Reports By US Aerospace Engineers And Scientists

By

This paper formulates and studies two propositions. Proposition 1 states that information that is external to the aerospace organization tends to be used less than internal sources of information; the more geographically removed the information is from the organization, the less likely it is to be used. Proposition 2 states that of the various sociometric variables assumed to influence the use of an information channel or source, perceived accessibility exerts the greatest influence. Preliminary analysis based on surveys supports Proposition 1. This analysis does not support Proposition 2, however. Evidence here indicates that reliability and relevance influence the use of an information source more than the idea of perceived accessibility.

4ERIC EJ1079512: Use Of The Drawing-Writing Technique To Determine The Level Of Knowledge Of Pre-Service Teachers Regarding Renewable Energy Sources

By

The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge of pre-service science teachers in Turkey regarding the different types of renewable energy sources, the methods used for obtaining energy from these sources, and the areas of use for these energy sources. Within the context of the study, the drawing-writing technique was used in order to determine the level of knowledge of the pre-service teachers. A total of 106 preservice science teachers were asked to make drawings related to the subject and purpose of the study; they were then asked to describe the drawing they made. Based on the study results, it was determined that while the majority of pre-service teachers could list solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy as sources of renewable energy, only a few mentioned geothermal, biomass, wave, and hydrogen energy as sources of renewable energy. In addition, some of the pre-service teachers mentioned nuclear energy as a source of renewable energy, which indicated that they possessed incorrect information regarding renewable energy sources.

6Knowledge-Based Trust: Estimating The Trustworthiness Of Web Sources

By

The quality of web sources has been traditionally evaluated using exogenous signals such as the hyperlink structure of the graph. We propose a new approach that relies on endogenous signals, namely, the correctness of factual information provided by the source. A source that has few false facts is considered to be trustworthy. The facts are automatically extracted from each source by information extraction methods commonly used to construct knowledge bases. We propose a way to distinguish errors made in the extraction process from factual errors in the web source per se, by using joint inference in a novel multi-layer probabilistic model. We call the trustworthiness score we computed Knowledge-Based Trust (KBT). On synthetic data, we show that our method can reliably compute the true trustworthiness levels of the sources. We then apply it to a database of 2.8B facts extracted from the web, and thereby estimate the trustworthiness of 119M webpages. Manual evaluation of a subset of the results confirms the effectiveness of the method.

7ERIC ED385866: Sources Of Knowledge And Plan Modification: Testing Aspects Of Cognitive Planning Theory.

By

A study examined and tested the knowledge sources individuals tap in the planning process and the process of plan modification. It is expected that contrary to plan-based theories, individuals will fail to remediate flaws in their plans if given the chance to develop a plan to pursue the same goal. It is also expected that differences exist between individuals' planned and actual performances as measured by the knowledge sources used in the respective planning procedures. Finally, it is expected that providing participants with arguments for a persuasion goal will validate the assumption that role model knowledge is a primary source of knowledge in planning to reach persuasive goals. Subjects, 15 communication students at a midwestern university took part in 2 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart from each other. At the first session they were asked to participate in two scenarios. In the first, they were to ingratiate themselves with a new roommate. In the second, they were to persuade another person to accept their view as to whether or not alcohol should be allowed in the dormitories. At the second session, they were given the same two problems and asked to talk through them aloud into a tape recorder. As expected, the results showed no consistent relationship between success and failure of a plan and plan modification. Findings raise questions about the adequacy of humans as planners and basic assumptions of the plan modification model. (Contains 5 tables of data and 15 references.) (TB)

8DTIC ADA219117: Integrating Multiple Sources Of Knowledge Into Designer-Soar, An Automatic Algorithm Designer

By

Designing algorithms requires diverse knowledge about general problem-solving, algorithm design, implementation techniques, and the application domain. The knowledge can come from a variety of sources, including previous design experience, and the ability to integrate knowledge from such diverse sources appears critical to the success of human algorithm designers. Such integration is feasible in an automatic design system, especially when supported by the general problem-solving and learning mechanisms in the Soar architecture. Our system, Designer-Soar, now designs several simple generate-and-test and divide-and-conquer algorithms. The system already uses several levels of abstraction, generalizes from examples, and learns from experience, transferring knowledge acquired during the design of one algorithm to aid in the design of others. Keywords: Reprints; Symposia; Proceedings; Algorithm design; Weak methods; Knowledge; Soar; Designer-soar; Artificial intelligence.

11A Pilot Investigation Of The Link Between Attitudes And Beliefs About Adolescent Cannabis Use And Parental Knowledge And Its Sources In Parent-adolescent Dyads Using The Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.

By

The present study aims to investigate the association between attitudes and beliefs toward cannabis and parental monitoring of adolescents' cannabis use. Current data suggest that the prevalence of cannabis use in adolescents has been decreasing over the past 10 years. Concomitantly, there has been a shift in the legal status of cannabis and the public's perception of cannabis consumption. These changes in public opinion might influence parental knowledge and monitoring of adolescents’ activities. Specifically, parents who do not perceive adolescent cannabis use as harmful or do not disapprove of this behavior may not be maintaining or increasing their awareness of their teen’s behavior regarding this drug. Considering the important role of parental monitoring in adolescents' cannabis use, the current study aims to explore how parents' and children's attitudes toward cannabis might associate with parental monitoring of cannabis use, for which we can account for their dyadic interdependence via the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model. We hypothesize that the higher perceived risk of harm and higher disapproval of cannabis use will be related to increased ratings of parental monitoring for both parent and teen.

14ERIC ED030327: Knowledge And The Public Mind. A Preliminary Study Of The Distribution And Sources Of Science, Health, And Public Affairs Knowledge In The American Public.

By

The average individual often knows very little. He has a sketchy knowledge about most topics, and knowledge in depth only about a very few. The factors that condition what and how much he knows are myriad. Of importance are time, education, income, sex, age, race, occupation, and where a man lives. Controlled, education tends to nullify the other factors, although they may re-emerge as predictors of what, and how much, a man is likely to know. Status in life is a noteworthy medium. Thus income, occupation, age, and race count. So does sex: women know more about health, and men know more about science and public affairs. In public affairs, the best predictors of knowledge are education, exposure to television, and interest in political campaigns. In health, the best predictors are education, print, and sex. In science, they are education, status in life, and print. If controlled, education can be used to stimulate a desire to know. The conclusions result from re-analysis of data collated between 1940 and 1967, in 35 national surveys. (GO)

20ERIC ED256247: Training Effects Of Summarizing, Item Writing, And Knowledge Of Information Sources On Reading Test Performance. College Reading And Learning Assistance Technical Report 85-03.

By

The comparative effects of instruction in self-questioning, summarizing, and question-answer relations on reading comprehension test performance were studied with 49 juniors and seniors enrolled in a remedial reading course at Georgia State University. The objective was to find a method to help students pass a statewide college reading exit examination. In the item-writing training procedure, students were taught to write multiple-choice comprehension questions based on their reading, while the summary writing training followed Day's summarization rules. Finally, students were introduced to the taxonomy of question-answer relations using the "Will Wends His Way" passage and questions from Pearson and Johnson (1978). All students received 4 to 5 hours of instruction and practice per week for a month within the context of the class. Three evaluation measures were employed: the Basic Word Vocabulary Test during the first week, a practice form of the state exit reading comprehension examination during the last week, and the actual Regent's Reading examination. Students trained in discrening question-answer relations were more successful on reading comprehension tests than students trained in either summarizing or item writing. (SW)

The socialization of sociology graduate students is examined to determine why graduate students often lack professional confidence, promise, and maturity. A review of professional development literature indicates possible problems. The student who lacks professional and occupational objectives, commitment, and works at less than full potential is described in section I. Section II discusses lack of graduate program standardization, unstructured curriculum, competitive grading, and student exploitation as sources of the problem. Section III describes the central cause of student problems as a double bind, consisting of the contradictory communications that sociology is a discipline of shapeless complexity and that the primary goal of the graduate student is to tie up all loose ends. These two communications, entitled the fallacy of shapeless complexity and the fallacy of closure, are characterized in sections IV and V, followed by solutions to the problem in section VI. The solution is to improve student and faculty awareness of and communication about the double bind and then to attempt practical reform of examination procedures, degree requirements, and knowledge development. 30Knowledge Of The Military Retirement System Among Naval Postgraduate School Officers And Analysis Of Associated Retirement Information Sources

By

The MBA Project assessed the knowledge of the military retirement system among U.S. military officers attending the Naval Postgraduate School and correlated the level of knowledge to the effectiveness of the underlying communication sources used by the population. A web-based survey site was used for primary data collection, as well as preliminary survey results analysis. The MBA Project: 1) determined the areas of the retirement system that are unfamiliar to the sample population, 2) determined the various modes of retirement system communication used by the population, 3) correlated levels of knowledge to basic demographics and communication modes, and 4) found the root causes in knowledge deficiencies recommended. The MBA Project concluded that there was a significant military retirement knowledge deficiency in the sample population at the Naval Postgraduate School. The military retirement information system was assessed as the root cause of this deficiency. Recommendations included improvements in the consolidation, periodicity, and policy of the military retirement information systems.

33ERIC ED207706: Children's Perceptions Of The Sources Of Self-Knowledge.

By

Seventy preschoolers, first, and third graders (average ages of 4 1/2, 6 1/2 and 8 1/2 years, respectively) participated in interviews which used stories and pictures to assess their perceptions of the sources of self-knowledge (self-observation, social feedback, and social comparison). Assessments were made of level of role-taking and salience, comprehension, and ranking of importance of each source. Results indicated that role-taking level, salience (recall), and comprehension of each source increased with age. At all grade levels social feedback was the first source of self-knowledge recalled. No grade differences occurred for rankings of each source; children cited self-observation as most important most frequently, followed by feedback from others and social comparison. (Author/MP)

36ERIC ED091511: Sources Of Knowledge Utilized In Curriculum Change In Nursing Education.

By

A study was conducted to suggest an answer to questions in nursing education concerning what educational changes are necessary, which directions those changes should take, and what type of approach should be used to introduce them. The study investigated the extent to which scientifically obtained knowledge is utilized in the process of change in nursing education, using selected innovations as the focus for the study. Information was obtained through a national survey of current curricular innovations in nursing as was determined by questionnaire and through a small number of case studies. The case studies indicated that there were various stages in each innovation process for each curriculum change. Several different modes of identifying the knowledge needed were determined in an attempt to classify the approaches used for deriving knowledge. The quality of the evidence was not assessed, however. A literature review pertaining to sources and methods of obtaining knowledge was utilized. (A 36-item bibliography and a classification scheme for the approaches used in deriving knowledge are also included.) (KP)

39Perceived Instrumentality Of Scientific And Ideological Sources Of Knowledge

By

This research is part of the "Trust in Science and Science-Related Populism Many Labs Study" (TISP) initiative. The primary questionnaire will be distributed in many countries; the details are available here: https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/manylabstrustinscience. However, we have added several additional questions and this pre-registration is concerned with these measures. Specifically, we focus on the perception of instrumentality of different sources of knowledge and epistemic conflict between science and other sources of knowledge.

43ERIC EJ1122891: The Relationship Between Agriculture Knowledge Bases For Teaching And Sources Of Knowledge

By

The purpose of this study was to describe the agriculture knowledge bases for teaching of agriculture teachers and to see if a relationship existed between years of teaching experience, sources of knowledge, and development of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), using quantitative methods. A model of PCK from mathematics was utilized as a framework to guide the study. On the job teaching experience, teacher preparation program, high school agriculture experience, previous agriculturally related jobs and internships, internet and other media, and professional development were all reported as effective sources of content knowledge. All six of the PCK knowledge constructs were perceived by teachers as possessing them to a fair extent. The content knowledge constructs were rated higher on average than the PCK constructs. Stepwise multiple linear regressions were utilized to determine if linear relationships existed between perceived PCK bases and sources of content knowledge. Four of the PCK knowledge constructs yielded statistically significant predictive models. Six of the seven sources of content knowledge were significant predictors for at least one of the constructs. Future research should include going beyond teachers' perceptions and measuring PCK and examination into the process from the sources of content knowledge to the development of PCK.

47ERIC EJ1061074: A Generic Framework For Extraction Of Knowledge From Social Web Sources (Social Networking Websites) For An Online Recommendation System

By

Mining social web data is a challenging task and finding user interest for personalized and non-personalized recommendation systems is another important task. Knowledge sharing among web users has become crucial in determining usage of web data and personalizing content in various social websites as per the user's wish. This paper aims to design a framework for extracting knowledge from web sources for the end users to take a right decision at a crucial juncture. The web data is collected from various web sources and structured appropriately and stored as an ontology based data repository. The proposed framework implements an online recommender application for the learners online who pursue their graduation in an open and distance learning environment. This framework possesses three phases: data repository, knowledge engine, and online recommendation system. The data repository possesses common data which is attained by the process of acquiring data from various web sources. The knowledge engine collects the semantic data from the ontology based data repository and maps it to the user through the query processor component. Establishment of an online recommendation system is used to make recommendations to the user for a decision making process. This research work is implemented with the help of an experimental case study which deals with an online recommendation system for the career guidance of a learner. The online recommendation application is implemented with the help of R-tool, NLP parser and clustering algorithm. This research study will help users to attain semantic knowledge from heterogeneous web sources and to make decisions.

49DTIC ADA364414: Preprocessing And Integration Of Data From Multiple Sources For Knowledge Discovery

By

The explosive growth in the generation and collection of data has generated an urgent need for a new generation of techniques and tools that can assist in transforming these data intelligently and automatically into useful knowledge. Knowledge discovery is an emerging multidisciplinary field that attempts to fulfill this need. Knowledge discovery is a large process that includes data selection, cleaning, preprocessing, integration, transformation and reduction, data mining, model selection, evaluation and interpretation, and finally consolidation and use of the extracted knowledge. This paper addresses the issues of data cleaning and integration for knowledge discovery by proposing a systematic approach for resolving semantic conflicts that are encountered during the integration of data from multiple sources. Illustrated with examples derived from military databases, the paper presents a heuristics based algorithm for identifying and resolving semantic conflicts at different levels of information granularity.
