1The TOEFL As Exit Criteria In English As A Foreign Language (EFL) Programs In Mexico: A Discourse Historical Analysis (DHA) Approach - Isaac Frausto Hernandez

By

The purpose of this article is to explore the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) assessment under its Institutional Testing Program (ITP) modality as it acts as a curriculum artifact along Mexican undergraduate degree programs considered within the exit criteria. A discourse historical approach (DHA) (Wodak, 2008; Wodak & Meyer, 2009) is taken in analyzing the TOEFL ITP assessment to further understand its implementation. The analysis helps reveal the many linguistic and metalinguistic skills and elements that extend beyond what may be traditionally taught in English courses or programs. The analysis also calls for further questioning of how suitable the TOEFL ITP may be in aiming to assess the proficiency level or development of English learners along undergraduate degrees in Mexico. Alternative types of assessment may better aid in providing a different perspective on the knowledge or progress of these students.

The "beauty and truth" in the title reminds one of John Keats's "Ode on a Grecian Urn." That is not only a great Romantic poem, but also a highly sophisticated rhetorical discourse. In it, the interwoven voices of the speaker, of the Urn, and of Keats himself as an implied author, exploit the ambivalence and ambiguity of the pronoun "we" in creating speakers and listeners, performers and audiences. The current article explores the rhetoric of populist discourse in one of Nigel Farage's recent (May 4th, 2019) speeches. The speaker appeals to emotion rather than reason, systematically using anaphoric and epiphoric triads and other rhetorical devices to hammer his messages home. The article undertakes to examine the inconsistency in the speaker's development of the antagonism between "ordinary," "patriotic," "honest" people seen as the vast majority of the British population (far more than the 52% who voted for Brexit in the 2016 referendum) and the remaining tiny minority, including the political and cultural elites, the multinationals, the banks, the hedge funds, identified as THEY. Nigel Farage, the son of a stockbroker, a stockbroker himself, the friend of stockbrokers supporting his campaign, is one of the ordinary, honest people. 5ERIC EJ878464: Empirical Study Of The Effects Of Discourse Markers On The Reading Comprehension Of Spanish Students Of English As A Foreign Language

By

The aim of this work is to analyse how Spanish readers react to English discourse markers in a text. We carry out an empirical study in which we ask three research question: (a) if there is any relationship between presence of discourse markers or absence of discourse markers and reading comprehension in English as a foreign language, (b) if there is any relationship between the readers' proficiency in English and the effect of the presence or absence of discourse markers on reading comprehension and, (c) if there is any relationship between the readers' age, sex, competence as learners and as learners of English, and the effect of the presence or absence of discourse markers on reading comprehension. The results obtained show that discourse markers enhance reading comprehension in foreign language reading, and that the more successful students tend to use discourse markers as aids to help their reading comprehension. This latter result is nevertheless limited by the possible effect of the readers' familiarity with the topic of the text and points to a need for further investigation. (Contains 12 footnotes and 5 tables.)

6ERIC ED066656: An Analysis Of The Denotations Of "Program" As Employed In Ordinary Language And Adult Education Discourse, With A Typology Of Program Based On The Denotations.

By

This study attempted to clarify the concept "program" by systematically examining the use of the term "program." The term was examined as it is used in ordinary language and in adult education literature. After analysis of the term within these two contexts, a typology was developed from the uses identified. The typology was then utilized as an aid in determining those variables affecting the validity of propositions containing the term "program" or concepts referred to in the use of the term. The results indicated that there were five senses of "program," that is, system, plan, document, performance, and planning. The implications that these results have for the adult educator are noted. They are: (1) the term "program" should be explicitly defined if it is to be used as a symbol to communicate a concept within a useful principle; (2) the use of the term "program" should not be abandoned; (3) Hosper's idea of defining and accompanying characteristics can be used as a basis for clarifying other adult education central terms and concepts; and (4) if there is a cause-effect relationship between various senses of "program" then further study is needed of the various things that can go wrong and which mitigate the cause-effect relationship. 8ERIC EJ1082808: Discourse Markers In Composition Writings: The Case Of Iranian Learners Of English As A Foreign Language

By

The aim of this study was to investigate discourse markers in descriptive compositions of 90 Iranian students who were selected from two universities. Without any instruction, they were given a topic to write a descriptive composition per week for 8 weeks. 598 compositions were collected, and they were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by three raters following Fraser's (1999) taxonomy of "Discourse Markers." Findings showed that students employed discourse markers with different degrees of occurrence. Elaborative markers were the most frequently used, followed by inferential, contrastive, causative, and topic relating markers. There was a direct and positive relationship between the quality of the compositions and the number of well-functioned discourse markers. Results also revealed statistically significant differences between the use of discourse markers and composition quality in the groups. Graduate students used more discourse markers, and this led to more cohesive texts.

9ERIC ED191274: Peekaboo As An Instructional Model: Discourse Development At Home And At School. Papers And Reports On Child Language Development, No. 17.

By

This paper reviews studies on classroom talk and on mother-child interaction; it compares the latter with classroom talk and speculates on what language in the classroom could be. The discussion of language in the classroom revolves around: (1) the speech situation, that is, a situation organized in terms of some nonverbal activity; (2) the speech event, that is, one directly governed by rules or norms for the use of speech; and (3) particular speech acts. The analysis of discourse at home finds the closest similarity between classroom and home in language games with infants and picture-book reading. Studies on these activities are reviewed and related to Vygotsky's concept of the "zone of proximal development." The examples of speech in the home are discussed in terms of their relationship to later speech development. The research reviewed in the previous sections is applied to language in the classroom with emphasis on the help children get in three activities, namely, answering teacher questions, participating in typical classroom-lesson discourse structure, and other discourse forms. 10ERIC ED377470: Narrative Discourse As Qualitative Inquiry: A Whole Language Teacher's Decision Making Process.

By

A qualitative study examined what is taught in a whole language classroom, how it is taught, and what changes in curriculum and instruction occur and why. A third-grade teacher, who had taught for 5 years and was considered an exemplary teacher by her principal and colleagues, was interviewed. Nineteen children in the teacher's heterogeneous reading group participated. Data included lesson plans, teacher designed pre- and posttests, field notes, graphic organizers, videotapes, and journal entries. Results indicated that the teacher: (1) focused on social studies content, but allocated little time for language arts, math, or science instruction; (2) used teaching activities that ranged from question-posing to recording what children found memorable; (3) sequenced activities arbitrarily; and (4) expected one resource or activity to meet multiple content area objectives. Results also indicated that changes in curriculum and instruction occurred because of the teacher's concern with student motivation, her perception of lesson effectiveness, and her emotional state. Findings raise concerns because the teacher is focusing on social studies to the neglect of other content areas, and she is assuming that one instructional resource or activity will meet several content area goals. 15ERIC ED327068: Popular Theater As A Discourse For Liberation In An Adult, Native Language, Literacy Class.

By

This study investigated the use of drama in a Spanish native language literacy course to engage adult students in the process of discussing their world. Nine 2-hour class sessions with 18 students were videotaped. During this period, using the theory of emancipatory education, the students developed a theater script based on an incident in a Central American country. In class, the students interviewed each other, discussed and debated news articles about the incident and related events, studied grammatical structures, contributed and discussed additional articles about oppression and the struggle for justice, and collectively wrote and read the script. The students became politically vocal and emotionally involved in the class discussions, and the class was reorganized in the process. It is concluded from ethnographic analysis of the experience that by using the students' language, educators make statements about the political dimension of literacy, legitimating their experiences and allowing them to generate their own knowledge. In addition, through the use of theater, the students are allowed to critically analyze their world by examining issues of race, language, and culture alongside social, economic, and historical factors. 16ERIC EJ1117308: Dialogue As A Constituent Resource For Dramatic Discourse: Language, Person And Culture

By

The article is devoted to the description of peculiarities of a person, language and culture. The offered approach of studying the human factor in the language singles out implicit connotations and makes it possible to see the differences in the perception of the reality by the members of the nation. The idea of the language as an environment of the existence of a person with which the constant interconnection happens; the person being the center of the linguistic picture of the world as the beginning of all categorical coordinates of the language is considered to be the basic idea. Studies of dramatic dialogue as discourse, as a special speech exchange system, are hardly in evidence, even in research of the language of drama. In drama discourse dialogue is employed as a dramatic resource. The specifics of the drama dialogue arc the locus of this study. The dialogue is viewed as interaction open to enormous variation. Dialogue is operative in drama; speech functioning is complex with its own specificities which are different from those in the literary field.

Research comparing the reading strategy use of native and second language (L2) readers has often relied on self-report measures and has, at times, been conducted without measures of reading proficiency. In the present study, we used regression and Bayes' factors to explore how L2 reader status and reading proficiency relate to self-report reading strategy use and the use of situated text processing strategies (i.e., paraphrasing, bridging, elaboration). Data were collected from a South-Central community college district as part of an ongoing study. L2 status did not predict self-reported strategy use, bridging, or elaboration, but was associated with increased paraphrasing (in the regression analysis only). Reading proficiency was negatively associated with self-reported use of support strategies, but positively predicted the use of all situated processing strategies. Results have important implications for L2 learning and instruction and provide insights into aspects of assessment for L2 readers. [This paper will be published in "Discourse Processes." The title of the published article will be "Exploring Reading Strategy Use in Native and ESL Readers."]
