He invited us to come out in the evening to a bar we were talking about recording a podcast in Munich but it couldn't happen so he invited me to London.  Who is Dom?? When he was 18 he started his first company and since that he never had a normal job. These days he is the CEO of STEMX a technology company that makes video interviewing simple, besides that he is the co-founder of the digital growth company Social Caps that helps other businesses grow their online presence. Although the United States has made great strides in improving its capacity to respond to and mitigate large-scale incidents resulting from acts of nature or deliberate acts of man, the development and improvement of community resiliency and preparedness has lagged behind. National surveys have shown that our nation's residents are not as prepared as they believe they are or know they should be, and reveal a national population that is largely unprepared and potentially vulnerable to a catastrophic event. Attempting to improve upon low preparedness levels, the Citizen Corps Personal Behavior Change Model for Disaster Preparedness (PDP) was introduced as a tool to assist in the design of outreach/social marketing preparedness programs. This thesis examines the underlying theoretical constructs of the PDP Model and identifies their limitations and gaps. The Community/Individual Integrated Model, which provides for an integration of individual and community-based behavior change models, is proposed and compared to the original PDP Model. It is suggested that, through the use of this model, a coordinated and matched approach between an individual and his/her community can develop a preparedness program that maximizes social relationships and moves the entire community, not just individuals, through the behavioral stages of change.

We explore their experiences with restricted movement due to Israeli watchtowers and discuss the broader impact of the occupation on daily life. Despite these hardships, Naveen and Malek's commitment to education and "sumud"-the spirit of steadfastness-shines through as they strive to create change in their communities.To support community engagement and informed decision-making, PAX and the Palestinian Center for Peace and Democracy (PCPD) carry out the \"Youth Bridges for Democracy and Participation\" project in the West Bank. Drawing from a design and development research approach, specifically model research, this study investigated the perspectives of higher education faculty and administrators regarding their experiences with a university-wide electronic portfolio implementation initiative. Participants in the study were fifty-two faculty and administrators at a large research university in the United States who were either continued users or recent abandoners of electronic portfolios. Survey and interview data were used to understand participant perspectives on the electronic portfolio implementation process, including perceived enablers and barriers to adoption of this instructional technology. Study findings and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory informed the development of a six-component electronic portfolio implementation framework. Three external experts in systemic change were then asked to review the framework. Feedback from these external experts was incorporated into a revised version of the framework that is presented here. The framework can be used by an educational institution to support the successful adoption and integration of electronic portfolios regardless of where the organization is within the implementation process.

When Rasmus Frey was 7 years old, his parents took him to the largest buffet in the world, at the CircusCircus Hotel in Las Vegas. Confronted with the overwhelming abundance of the table, Mr. Frey was confused. This session is about what happens when you try to serve everything at once: You go to bed hungry. Weâll talk about how we can create improvements through an incremental approach, one step at a time. These days - Drupal being the catâs pyjamas and all - small studios such as ours suddenly have the capacity to provide large scale enterprise solutions. This presents a shift in the way that we work with our clients, developers, and sub-contractors. One night stands, it turns out, just aren't as satisfying as long term relationships. Changing our approach presents us with numerous challenges (resource management, maintaining the big picture of both strategy and development), improvements (avoiding scope creep, creating better solutions), and possibilities (true collaboration with your client). On a more practical level, we'll show you how we apply the incremental design and development in our day-to-day business through concrete examples of long term collaboration with our clients. A study investigated factors supporting innovation in American Indian education by comparing data from two separate studies. One was a followup study of 25 Indian educators' implementation of cooperative learning and whole language techniques, which sought to identify: (1) the impact of the innovations on student achievement; and (2) factors that enable or constrain sustained pedagogical change. The second was a long-term ethnographic study at Rough Rock, on the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona. The investigation's focus was on institutional and other structural barriers to educational reform, beyond what occurs in the classroom. It is argued that analysis of reform efforts must address factors both within the instructional setting and in the school's organizational structure and sociopolitical context. It is proposed that such analysis is essential to understanding and transforming the historically disempowering experiences of this population. (MSE)

War, diplomacy, and economic sanctions are three cornerstones of strategy that have successfully coerced rogue regimes to capitulate. Now may be the time to develop a new method of spurring regime change. During the 20th century, several nations successfully transitioned from authoritarian rule to democracy. These transitions were hastened by nonviolent civil disobedience. Although nonviolent civil disobedience is a common form of political action throughout the world, many political observers do not understand its nature and often underestimate its effect. Nonviolence is built on three key components: mobilization, strategy, and ethics. By examining case studies it is possible to identify the importance of each component in a nonviolent civil disobedience campaign. South Africa's nonviolence campaign demonstrated the power that individual groups possess when they come together as one against a regime. South Africa's minority population was successfully mobilized and the African National Congress used protests, strikes, and boycotts to undermine the economy. When the economy collapsed, so did the regime that had profited from the corrupt handling of economic affairs. South African protestors were able to bolster worldwide support when they convinced other nations that apartheid was immoral. The successful overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos can be attributed to the same components of nonviolent civil disobedience. Like South Africa, several individual groups came together to protest the Marcos regime when Marcos declared martial law to avoid defeat in a democratic election. Philippine protestors used boycotts and strikes to tear apart the economy. When the military realized that Marcos no longer had control of the population, it disavowed the regime. The author compares these case studies to the conditions in Iran and Iran's 1979 Revolution to assess whether nonviolent civil disobedience could be organized in Iran with some likelihood of successfully replacing the regime.

Khateebah Jessika Kenney, a favorite mu'adthinah at The Women's Mosque of America, delivers the 43rd khutbah on July 27, 2018. In this beautifully evocative khutbah, Jessika explores the symbolism of water in Islam and the deeper meanings of "ritual purity" beyond the usual loaded/negative definitions. She also performs Javanese and Persian poetry related to the topic and recites Arabic from the Qur'an in her signature beautiful, melodic style. Bio: Jessika Kenney is a vocalist, composer/improviser, and teacher. Jessika's singing can be heard on Ideologic Organ, Black Truffle, Weyrd Son, SIGE, Present Sounds, and other labels. She performs regularly with writers/scholars Red Pine (Bill Porter), Fatemeh Keshavarz, and Anne Carson. At international festivals, Jessika has performed her own compositions as well as music of Annea Lockwood, Hossein Omoumi, Morton Feldman, Giacinto Scelsi, and others. Climate change is one of the most serious issues to affect modern society. What originated as a scientific question has evolved into a complex political and social issue. The policy context recognises the pivotal role of education in encouraging effective engagement and behavioural responses to projected climate changes. It is relatively easy to nod assent to the principles of climate change education and engagement, but harder to deliver. This paper explores experiences of educating and engaging current and future decision makers, namely pupils, teachers, charity workers, small business owners and councillors on the subject of climate change in Wales. It draws conclusions about the existing climate for learning as well as the potential for overcoming challenges associated with information needs of these existing and future decision-makers. It considers the broader issue of whether current climate change information and education frameworks are fit for purpose and able to support effective climate change mitigation and adaptation activities. The findings suggest that many climate change communications from international organisations are not being received or understood at local levels, indicating a need for further and simpler ‘translation’ of science. Despite a strong formal education system in Wales, there are variations in basic skills (such as map reading and graph interpretation), required for simple climate change science interpretation. Finally, our results point to a need for climate literacy to be gained through interactive long-term learning rather than one-off training, particularly given some of the entrenched views of the older age groups involved in the study.

On September 9th and 10th, 1999, four leaders of three communitywide educational collaborations met to discuss their experiences in promoting large-scale education reform spanning elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels. They had met over the last 6 years through their participation in the Community Compacts for Student Success initiative. The purpose of the initiative was to improve the educational performance of all students, particularly those held back by poverty and race, through systematic, large-scale education improvement efforts guided by coalitions of local leaders from education, business, and the community. This report is a product of the evaluation of program sites. The format of this report is a conversational interview with the four education leaders. Topics discussed include what factors motivated educators to engage in communitywide collaboration, the importance of involving higher education, organizational issues in promoting collaboration, the role of the collaborative Compact Director, how success is measured, using resources to support K-16 collaboration, taking K-16 improvement and integration to scale, and advice for others. The report concludes with a background on the meeting participant, the community compacts, and the Education Trust, and a description of program standards and performance indicators. (RT)

Success of Chandigarh as the first City-State in any third world country made Chandigarh a role model for the third world to follow and defined a new strategic approach to counter the tobacco industry to achieve clean air and health for all people. Chandigarh became smoke-free on July 15, 2007. It has now sustained its smoke-free status for nearly three and a half year back but yet no other city/State in India had caught up with Chandigarh. Understand how the use of strategic approach helped in churning out India's first Smoke-Free City.

This study attempted to identify the continuous quality improvement (CQI) practices that leaders implement in the process of changing cultures at institutions of higher education. Emphasis was on meeting the challenge of balancing a respect for the institution's existing culture while working to create a new culture. First, a survey was constructed and sent to 408 higher education institutions (273 responses) that have implemented CQI. Second, a qualitative study based on in-depth site visits to 10 institutions that had been implementing CQI principles and practices for at least three years was conducted. Visited institutions included four-year public, four-year independent, and two-year community colleges, as well as a mixture of research- and teaching-focused institutions of various sizes. The primary themes that emerged were grouped under the categories of (1) systems developed, (2) main barriers encountered, (3) outcomes of quality principles and practices, and (4) lessons learned. Major themes identified included the need for effective communication systems; (2) the need for changes in institutional culture; and (3) and the recognition that leadership is critical in changing culture.
