9ERIC ED040970: Relationships Between Content Experience And The Development Of Seriation Skills In First Grade Children. Final Report.
By ERIC
This study is concerned with the manner in which experience with concrete, quantitative, interpersonal, and verbal content influences the development of ability patterns in first grade children. The literature related to theoretical models of intellectual development indicates that abilities develop in response to experiential variables, such as content, and that content specific instruction may experimentally produce changes in the ability patterns of six-year-olds. Pilot studes were conducted and data to test the experimental hypotheses were collected from 240 first grade children. A Seriation Skills Test, which is included in the document, was prepared from these. A Solomon Four Group Designs used to ensure internal validity of the study and the effect of instruction on subtest scores and total scores was assessed by performing an analysis of variance of group means observed on posttest. The results revealed high pretest intercorrelations among some seriation abilities and low pretest intercorrelations among others, and instruction did not significantly alter the relationships. The results suggest that to improve the reliability of infant and preschool intelligence scales and to select materials for home intervention and Head Start programs, Structure of Intellect content categories should be used as guides. 14ERIC ED356887: Sex-Role Development In Young Children: Relationships To Behavioral And Attitudinal Measures Of Parental Gender Schemas.
By ERIC
To explore early sex-role development, this study examined the gender schemas of parents in relation to the sex-typed toy preferences of their own young children. Subjects were 82 parents of children between the ages of 3 and 8. Test stimuli consisted of 2 equivalent lists of 24 occupations, each list containing 8 occupations coded as typically male, female, or neutral. Each item was presented singly. In the immediate-response condition, subjects were asked to decide as quickly as possible whether each occupation was most appropriate for men, women, or both. In the delayed-response condition which followed, the second list of occupations was presented and subjects were asked to think over their response until a signal sounded (after a 2.5 second delay). Parents' judgments were compared with judgments about sex-typed toys made by their children in a separate study. Parents also completed questionnaires to measure personal sex-typing, general attitude towards women's roles, and views about prospective play activities and future career options of their children. Analysis showed that parents' gender-category judgments were not related to their children's judgments. However, there were a number of parent-child gender-schema links, including a relationship between mothers' judgments of previously sex-typed feminine occupations as appropriate for both men and women, and their sons' reduced avoidance of feminine toys. 17ERIC ED292286: General And Specific Aspects Of The Physical Environment: Relationships With Development In Handicapped Children Ages 1 To 10.
By ERIC
The relationship between physical environment and child development was examined in five groups of moderately to severely handicapped children (hearing impaired, vision impaired, orthopedically impaired, speech impaired, mentally retarded). The 282 participating children comprised 89 infants (ages 0-3), 108 preschoolers (ages 3-6), and 85 elementary school children (ages 6-10). Each child's family was visited twice (18 months apart) at home and assessed using sociodemographic indices, the HOME Inventory, a parental coping scale, a social support inventory, the Family Inventory of Life Events, the Scales of Independent Behavior, and either the Bayley Scales of Infant Development or the Stanford-Binet Intelligence test. Results indicated that there was a high degree of specificity between the type of handicap and age and the development of handicapped children. Availability of materials was only slightly related to behavioral development in infants but more significant in overall development of preschool and elementary school age children. Significant correlations were most frequent for orthopedically and speech impaired children's motor and social development, while no significant correlations appeared for the mentally retarded in any developmental area. Findings also indicated that general surroundings in which a child lives were essentially unrelated to behavioral development for handicapped children ages 0-10. (VW)

1Collected Public Domain Poems of Wallace Stevens, Volume 1
By Wallace Stevens
A collection of Wallace Stevens poems written before 1923.

Stevens trained to be a lawyer. Within eleven years after this series of poems were written, he was vice-president at the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company in Connecticut. He continued to pursue a quiet life of poetry and correspondence and for the remainder of his life he nurtured his contemplative habit of observation and writing as he walked from home to work and back again. Few at Hartford knew of his world acclaim as a poet. While his major work is considered to have been written when he was much older, many of these early poems are firm classics in the American poetic canon, including: “Anecdote of the Jar,” “The Emperor of Ice Cream,” “Peter Quince at the Clavier,” “Sunday Morning,” “The Snow Man,” “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,” and many others. Stevens died of cancer in 1955, shortly after receiving that year’s Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

These poems originally appeared in a variety of magazines (Others, Secession, Rogue, The Soil, The Modern School, Broom, Contact, The New Republic, The Measure, The Little Review, The Dial, and particularly in Poetry: A Magazine of Verse.) Nearly 70 of the 101 published poems were later collected in Stevens' first published collection of poems, HARMONIUM. (Summary by Alan Davis Drake)

By Hazard Stevens
Hazard Stevens and P.B. Van Trump, aided by the Indian guide Sluiskin, made the first documented successful ascent of Mt. Rainier on August 17, 1870. Hazard's account of the climb was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1876 and later reprinted with an introduction by Edmond S. Meany in 1916. Sluiskin tried to dissuade the climbers. "Takhoma” (the Indian name for Mt. Rainier) "was an enchanted mountain, inhabited by an evil spirit, who dwelt in a fiery lake on its summit. No human being could ascend it or even attempt its ascent and survive." This prophecy almost proved true. Thinking they could reach the summit and return on the same day, Stevens and Van Trump left behind coats and blankets, only to find themselves trapped overnight in bitter cold. They survived huddled around a volcanic steam vent in an ice cave. "The heat at the orifice was too great to bear for more than an instant, but the steam wet us, the smell of sulfur was nauseating, and the cold was so severe that our clothes, saturated with the steam, froze stiff when turned away from the heated jet." (Summary by Sue Anderson)

7Citadel of Fear
By Francis Stevens
Gertrude Barrows Bennett was the first major female writer of fantasy and science fiction in the United States, publishing her stories under the pseudonym Francis Stevens. Bennett wrote a number of highly acclaimed fantasies between 1917 and 1923 and has been called "the woman who invented dark fantasy". Citadel of Fear is considered Francis Stevens' masterpiece, by Lovecraft's acclaim. Two adventurers discover a lost city in the Mexican jungle. One is taken over by an evil god while the other falls in love with a woman from the ancient Mexican city of Tlapallan. Citadel of Fear was first published as a serial in Argosy Magazine in 1918-1919. It was eventually republished as a novel in 1970. It is now considered a "lost classic".
