By

Useful information for certain aspects of the analysis of data obtained by the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) are contained. The meaning of the UVSPCO-ordinate system and the SMM roll, pitch, and yaw are described and the process for overlaying UVSP images is explained. The various computer programs that calculate the line of sight component of the SMM spacecraft velocity from the spacecraft to the Sun is described. The spacecraft velocity is used to correct or interpret the signal observed in USVP dopplergrams. A method of using the spacecraft velocity to calibrate UVSP dopplergrams and magnetograms, i.e., determine the width of the observed emission line is applied. The UVSP polarization analysis procedures are described and the expressions for the statistical uncertainties in various quantities obtained from UVSP measurements are given.

Educational research and practice have proven that there are many benefits for applying learning theories' recommendations through teaching and learning of different subjects in all school levels. Based on interrelationships among learning theories of contextualism, connectivism, constructivism, and cognitivism, the researcher proposed an instructional model under the title of 4Cs model: contextualizing, connecting, constructing, and cognitivizing to take the learner through a mental trip from observing and examining real materials to long-term memory. However, the main purpose of this study was to identify the effect of using the proposed model on acquiring some scientific concepts, life skills, and multiple intelligences of middle school female students. 8Microsoft Research Audio 103651: Analyzing Metabolomics Data For Automated Prediction Of Underlying Biological Mechanisms

By

Metabolites are intermediates and products of metabolism. With the recent advances in experimental technologies, such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, the number of metabolites that can be measured in biofluids has rapidly increased. The large number and breath of the metabolites represents a challenge to an informed interpretation of the results, when the goal is to determine the biochemical mechanisms that are responsible for the observed changes. There is thus a need for computational tools to help biologists and clinical researchers to derive meaningful interpretations of metabolomics data. This talk describes a technique for automated interpretation and analysis of metabolomics data via existing metabolic networks. We also briefly describe our current prototype system that implements our technique. ©2008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

9Moving From Data-Constrained To Data-Enabled Research: Experiences And Challenges In Collecting, Validating And Analyzing Large-Scale E-Commerce Data

By

Widespread e-commerce activity on the Internet has led to new opportunities to collect vast amounts of micro-level market and nonmarket data. In this paper we share our experiences in collecting, validating, storing and analyzing large Internet-based data sets in the area of online auctions, music file sharing and online retailer pricing. We demonstrate how such data can advance knowledge by facilitating sharper and more extensive tests of existing theories and by offering observational underpinnings for the development of new theories. Just as experimental economics pushed the frontiers of economic thought by enabling the testing of numerous theories of economic behavior in the environment of a controlled laboratory, we believe that observing, often over extended periods of time, real-world agents participating in market and nonmarket activity on the Internet can lead us to develop and test a variety of new theories. Internet data gathering is not controlled experimentation. We cannot randomly assign participants to treatments or determine event orderings. Internet data gathering does offer potentially large data sets with repeated observation of individual choices and action. In addition, the automated data collection holds promise for greatly reduced cost per observation. Our methods rely on technological advances in automated data collection agents. Significant challenges remain in developing appropriate sampling techniques integrating data from heterogeneous sources in a variety of formats, constructing generalizable processes and understanding legal constraints. Despite these challenges, the early evidence from those who have harvested and analyzed large amounts of e-commerce data points toward a significant leap in our ability to understand the functioning of electronic commerce.

10ERIC ED580766: Determination Of The Relationship Between Teacher Problems And School Success The Aim Of This Study Is To Determine What The Teacher Problems Are In Different Dimensions And To Find Out If There Is A Relationship Between Teacher Problems And School Achievement. For This Purpose, It Has Been Tried To Determine How The Teacher Problems Differ According To The Variables Such As Gender, Seniority, Title, School Level, Branch And Type Of School. The Research Includes Teachers Who Work In Primary, Secondary And High Schools. The Scale Used As The Data Collection Tool Of The Survey Contains 35 Items In Total Under Five Main Headings. In The Questionnaire, Short Answer Questions Were Added Under Five Headings Prepared In The Form Of LLkert With A Total Of 106 Items, Which Were Expressed In The Press, Councils And Scientific Studies, And It Was Distributed To The 28 Teachers. By Analyzing The Information Gathered From The 28 Teachers, The Researcher Tried To Develop A Scale Of 50 Items By Combining Similar Subjects Covered Under Different Headings. The aim of this study is to determine what the teacher problems are in different dimensions and to find out if there is a relationship between teacher problems and school achievement. The developed scale was reapplied in a school with 22 teachers and then factor analysis was performed on these 50 items. Expressions with low item scores were removed and it was finalized as a 35-item scale. The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient for the 50-item scale was found to be 0.82, and the reliability studies weren't conducted for the new scale. The scale continues to be applied at the moment. The obtained information will be analyzed in the light of research sub-problems after the implementation process.

12Microsoft Research Video 103651: Analyzing Metabolomics Data For Automated Prediction Of Underlying Biological Mechanisms

13ERIC ED617566: Exploring Math Education Relations By Analyzing Large Data Sets II. Research Memorandum. ETS RM-21-02

By

The current project, Exploring Math Education Relations by Analyzing Large Data Sets (EMERALDS) II, is an attempt to identify specific Common Core State Standards procedural, conceptual, and problem-solving competencies in earlier grades that best predict success in algebraic areas in later grades. The data for this study include two cohorts of California students with Smarter Balance (SB) mathematics scores. SB items were clustered based on a priori defined prealgebra knowledge domains and algebra content areas. Two approaches were then used to characterize student performance for several of these competencies: item residuals and factor scores. These performance indices were subsequently used in a series of regression models to examine the relationships between prealgebra competencies and later algebra outcomes. The findings from this study have implications for the use of the SB assessment for monitoring students' readiness for high school algebra and highlight areas that might be particularly important for success in this core mathematics domain. This report also provides direction for future studies.

Independent and original thinking are the concepts which define critical thinking. A critical thinker doesn't passively accept other people's views and thoughts, on the contrary he constitutes his own thoughts by analyzing them. This independence liberates his mind, heart and actions (Doganay and Ünal, 2006). In this context, the definition of critical thinking can be summarized as reaching a conclusion by reasoning (collecting information for a present situation, defining assumptions and evidences, discussing the defined evidences and inferring and synthesizing) on a problem or a situation (Demirel, 2006). Critical thinking becomes a basic skill in occupational groups. To improve the quality of the services people get, all professionals, especially doctors, teachers, architects, lawyers, nurses, builders, must have the ability to think critically. This study aims to classify the master's and PhD theses whose titles contain the concept of "critical thinking" by different variables. The data were collected from the 211 master's and PhD theses completed between 1999-2014 and registered to database of Council of Higher Education. Another interesting point is that most of the theses were prepared by female researchers.

Book's cover

The Plastic Age (1924) is a novel by Percy Marks, which tells the story of co-eds at a fictional college called Sanford. With contents that covered or implied hazing, partying, and "petting", the book sold well enough to be the second best-selling novel of 1924. The following year, it was adapted into a film of the same name, starring Clara Bow. (Introduction from Wikipedia)

By

Book's cover

These short stories about crickets, ants, bees, beetles and other little busybodies are intended by the two authors to show their children the wonderland of insectcs if we just take the time to look closely. "We hope that you will realize that more wonderful than the most wonderful fairy story ever told is the marvel of the created life of these little insects; we want you to come to know something of their joys and troubles; we want you to learn how to be kind to them, and how they may be useful to you; and we want you to find out for yourselves the places they take in the great plan of creation." The authors speak to their own children in each story and through them to children of all ages to come. A fun book so jump right in! Book's cover

Supposing you were asked to enter a Great Palace? And within that palace, you were told, were more than a thousand golden doors? And those doors opened into rooms and upon gardens and balconies, all of which were the most beautiful of palace rooms and gardens? And some were more beautiful than anything the world had ever known before? Do you think you would go through the gate to that palace? And if you were told that in the palace were lamps so bright that they lighted not only the palace, but cast a glow over the whole world? And that these lamps hung from chains the ends of which you could not see, just as Pryderi was not able to see the ends of the hanging golden chains in the palace which he entered? And once within the Great Palace you were not only better for being there, but also happier and stronger and more beautiful, and never any more could you be lonely? It sounds like an Aladdin's lamp, does it not, which, once seen and touched, could bring so much beauty and power into our lives! Indeed, it is Aladdin's lamp—the lamp of men's minds and souls. And the Great Palace is the Palace of English Literature. - Summary by From the introduction
