1ERIC ED385863: The Need For Integrative Communication Within A Multicultural Communication Model: A Case Study Of Public Relations Functions And Leadership In Community Development.

By

A case study analyzed a special event, AmeriFlora '92, held from April 1992 to October 1992 in Columbus, Ohio. AmeriFlora '92 was established as a temporary organization covering nearly 8 years of planning, operations, and dismantling. The lack of attendance and the resulting financial impact inspired a major effort to examine the role of public relations in this international cultural, entertainment, and floral exposition. The focus of the study on public relations functions was also examined in terms of PR's relationship to marketing and advertising (particularly the lack of integrative communication) and most significantly, how reflective these findings are in terms of the communication model(s) described in the literature. Results suggest the need to examine the preparedness of public relations professionals for integrated communication and leadership roles in an organization, especially under conflict situations. Results further indicate the impact of publics on an organization and thus illustrate the ineffectiveness of both the one-way and two-way communication models. Findings suggest the need for adapting a multicultural communication model, especially when the potential for conflict exists. Contains 13 references. (Author/SR)

6ERIC ED368361: Analysis Of User Need With CD-ROM Databases: A Case Study Based On Work Sampling At One University Library.

By

Analysis of the needs of users of Compact Disk-Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) was performed at the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida. A review of the literature indicated that problems associated with selecting the appropriate database, searching, and requiring technical assistance were the probable areas of user need. The library has 17 databases and uses 9 types of software. Statistics were gathered on 20 different days, typically during the work week. User need was broadly defined as a request for assistance addressed to the CD-ROM assistant, who was also the observer. Of the 487 questions, 134 were technical questions of various types that concerned software or hardware, 115 concerned selecting the appropriate database, and 110 concerned search strategy. The analysis suggests areas in which librarian and patron training would be beneficial. (Contains 12 references.) (SLD)

Text classification has allowed researchers to analyze natural language data at a previously impossible scale. However, a text classifier is only as valid as the the annotations on which it was trained. Further, the cost of training a classifier depends on annotators' ability to quickly and accurately apply the coding scheme to each text. Thus, researchers need guidance on how to generate training data with optimal efficiency and accuracy. To this end, this study proposes the single-case study design as a feasible and causally-valid research design for empirical decision-making in annotation projects. The key strength of the design is its ability to generate causal evidence with as few as one annotator. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of the single-case study in an applied experiment and argue that future researchers should incorporate the design into the pilot stage of annotation projects so that, over time, a causally-valid body of knowledge regarding the best annotation techniques is built. [This paper will be published in the "Journal of Data Science." The published article is titled: "Improving the Science of Annotation for Natural Language Processing: The Use of the Single-Case Study for Piloting Annotation Projects"]

15ERIC EJ1075200: English For Employability: A Case Study Of The English Language Training Need Analysis For Engineering Students In India

By

This article examines the effectiveness of English language courses offered in the engineering colleges in India. Many engineering graduates in India are found to be unemployable due to their poor communication skills and lack of confidence. There have been a lot of research papers that have reiterated the importance of improving engineering graduates' employability skills; however, the problem of poor communication skills grows unabated in India. This study is mainly conducted to understand the reality in English classrooms of engineering colleges to unravel the mystery behind the poor performance of many engineering graduates in India. It has been identified that many third year students are still lacking confidence to face their campus placements that are to take place in their final year of study. Moreover, it has been found that the methodologies of faculty members need to be enhanced as large number of students want more interactive sessions to improve their language skills. The survey results have shown evidence of gap between the English professors' methodology and engineering students' confidence levels and also accentuate the importance of suitable training programs for required for engineering students.

16Short-term Enzalutamide Treatment For The Potential Remission Of Active Surveillance Or Intermediate-risk Prostate Cancer: A Case Study, Review, And The Need For A Clinical Trial.

By

This article is from Research and Reports in Urology , volume 6 . Abstract Active surveillance (AS) is a widely recognized and utilized option by which prostate cancer patients with less aggressive tumors on diagnosis defer immediate traditional conventional therapy (surgery, radiation) and undergo close monitoring by a physician for any clinical or pathologic changes. The juxtaposition of low- to intermediate-risk elderly patients between effective and conventional treatment with associated risks and monitoring without the opportunity for relief of anxiety and other psychological problems can be significant. Minimal and safe treatment over 6 months with the hope of eliminating the existing disease is of significant interest to prostate cancer patients. Unfortunately, dietary supplements have failed to improve and have sometimes even contributed to disease progression. In addition, the use of multiple medications is not always appropriate or safe. In this case study, we administered low doses of enzalutamide (80 mg/day–120 mg/day) in an AS patient during a 6 month period. Results showed a significant reduction in tumor size, as evidenced by magnetic resonance imaging and color Doppler, as well as a an undetectable level of prostate specific antigen during, and immediately following treatment. The use of an oral second-generation androgen-receptor signaling inhibitor was shown to be of benefit to patients unwilling to pursue AS and conventional treatment. Administration of enzalutamide did not reduce testosterone levels, but helped maintain good quality of life, was more cost effective at low doses, and was previously shown to be heart healthy and efficacious during early stages of castration-resistant prostate cancer. Although we do not advocate enzalutamide as a treatment approach in these situations, we believe that a clinical trial to evaluate short-term low-dose treatment using enzalutamide is warranted.

22Dabigatran - A Continuing Exemplar Case History Demonstrating The Need For Comprehensive Models To Optimize The Utilization Of New Drugs.

By

This article is from Frontiers in Pharmacology , volume 5 . Abstract Background: There are potential conflicts between authorities and companies to fund new premium priced drugs especially where there are effectiveness, safety and/or budget concerns. Dabigatran, a new oral anticoagulant for the prevention of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF), exemplifies this issue. Whilst new effective treatments are needed, there are issues in the elderly with dabigatran due to variable drug concentrations, no known antidote and dependence on renal elimination. Published studies showed dabigatran to be cost-effective but there are budget concerns given the prevalence of AF. These concerns resulted in extensive activities pre- to post-launch to manage its introduction. Objective: To (i) review authority activities across countries, (ii) use the findings to develop new models to better manage the entry of new drugs, and (iii) review the implications based on post-launch activities.Methodology: (i) Descriptive review and appraisal of activities regarding dabigatran, (ii) development of guidance for key stakeholder groups through an iterative process, (iii) refining guidance following post launch studies. Results: Plethora of activities to manage dabigatran including extensive pre-launch activities, risk sharing arrangements, prescribing restrictions and monitoring of prescribing post launch. Reimbursement has been denied in some countries due to concerns with its budget impact and/or excessive bleeding. Development of a new model and future guidance is proposed to better manage the entry of new drugs, centering on three pillars of pre-, peri-, and post-launch activities. Post-launch activities include increasing use of patient registries to monitor the safety and effectiveness of new drugs in clinical practice. Conclusion: Models for introducing new drugs are essential to optimize their prescribing especially where concerns. Without such models, new drugs may be withdrawn prematurely and/or struggle for funding.

23A Case Study On The Need For And Availability Of Patient Tracking Systems

By

This thesis analyzes the feasibility, efficiency and usability of patient tracking systems in support of military and Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (HA/DR) operations by reviewing the implications for implementing a medical technology into the field. The initial focus of this research is on determining the need for such a system. Research was conducted that discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each of the currently available systems. This will be followed by combining the strengths of each system into a single, 'best of breed' system. This thesis will also investigate the suitability of currently available COTS hardware and software components for medical operations.

36ERIC EJ804100: Why Kids Need To Be Bored: A Case Study Of Self-Reflection And Academic Performance

By

This case study involved 3 middle school students in an assessment of the influence of self-reflection on general academic performance. It was hypothesized that increased self-reflection would have a positive influence on academic performance as measured by grades on tests, writing assignments, and homework. The participants were ages 13.4, 13.5, and 13.8. The study covered 3 months and was divided into two stages. During the first stage (month 1), the participants kept daily logs of all activities and were asked to write in their personal journals for 15 min each day. Logs indicated that participants devoted an average of 42.2 hrs per week to watching TV, playing computer and video games, listening to music, and talking on the telephone. During the second stage (months 2 and 3), participants limited TV, computer and video games, music, and telephone time to 30 min per day; in the time made free thereby, they were to read, sit quietly, write in their journals, meet with friends, and so on, provided these activities did not include any of the proscribed activities. Two of the participants dropped out of the study within 2 weeks, stating that they could not bear the lack of electronic activities. The remaining participant succeeded in modifying her schedule, followed by improvement in overall academic performance. (Contains 6 tables and 2 figures.)

By

COVID-19 had a disastrous impact on the education sector resulting in a boom of online learning systems. This shift has severely impacted the underprivileged students with special needs due to the sudden implementation of prolonged distance learning. Thus, it creates an immense need to analyze distance learning media's effectiveness during the COVID-19 pandemic for students with special needs. Established on the community of inquiry (COI) model, this study aims to determine the factors that underpin students' satisfaction with their e-learning experience through the mediated mechanism of students online learning readiness. Surveying 178 special needs students from various Indonesian universities revealed that teaching presence, cognitive and social presence, and content quality, directly and indirectly, influence e-learning satisfaction. This extended and more comprehensive model would help educators better understand e-learning's use as an effective pedagogical platform, especially in the context of special needs students. Key policy implications and directions for future research are suggested.

40A Case Of Need

The E-learning readiness and satisfaction of special needs students are scarcely investigated areas in education and e-learning literature. 41ERIC ED614772: Evidence Required: A Critical Review Of 'Improving Oversight Of Michigan Charter Schools And Their Authorizers'. Policy Brief No. S2020-03 This Paper Offers A Critical Review Of A Report Published In March By The Citizens Research Council Of Michigan Titled "Improving Oversight Of Michigan Charter Schools And Their Authorizers." The Report Argues That Charter Schools And Charter School Authorizers Need More Oversight. Making The Case For This Position Might Include Demonstrating That Charter Schools Are Performing Poorly And Showing How Additional Oversight Would Bring Needed Improvements. Surprisingly, The Report Does Neither Of Those Things, And Instead Rests On Broad Generalizations About Charter School Accountability That Rely On Questionable Assumptions That Are Not Explained Or Justified. The Report Suffers From Other Issues. There Are Several Factual Errors Or Misrepresentations Of Facts. It Supports Several Seemingly Contradictory Positions. It Is Biased Towards A Particular Governance Model For Public Schools -- Local School Boards -- But Never Provides A Rationale For That Bias. This Review Explains Each Of These Shortcomings In Detail. While Some Of These Issues Only Tangentially Relate To The Main Argument Of The Paper, On The Whole, It Fails To Sufficiently Demonstrate That Charter Schools Need More Public Oversight.

This paper offers a critical review of a report published in March by the Citizens Research Council of Michigan titled "Improving Oversight of Michigan Charter Schools and Their Authorizers." The report argues that charter schools and charter school authorizers need more oversight.

45ERIC ED593181: The Use Of CollegeReady To Improve Course Performance In English Without The Need For Formal Remediation: A Case Study At Chattanooga State Community College. Research Report 2018-6

By

Many students graduate from high school under-prepared for college-level coursework, leading to a large number of students entering college who require remediation in English and mathematics. This study looked at the effectiveness of using EdReady--now offered through ACT as CollegeReady™--as a system for delivering remediation prior to college to improve students' course performance. We found that students who elected to skill-up with the product to the point where they avoided remedial coursework actually out-performed their peers with regard to their pass rate and course grades in their first college-level English composition course, providing promising support for the program. Future research should employ experimental and/or quasi-experimental designs to isolate the causal effect of CollegeReady on college success.

47DTIC ADA469909: A Case Study On The Need For And Availability Of Patient Tracking Systems

This will be followed by combining the strengths of each system into a single, ?best of breed? system. This thesis will also investigate the suitability of currently available COTS hardware and software components for medical operations.

Converts from infidelity; or, Lives of eminent individuals who have renounced libertine principles and sceptical opinions, and embraced Christianity.

…Some of the more generally known, and best accredited examples of these conversions, the reader of the following volumes will find, in the Lives of Eminent Individuals who have renounced libertine principles and sceptical opinions, and embraced Christianity. Such narratives may be regarded as interesting in themselves, but more especially important, as furnishing the most authentic testimonies to the truths of revealed religion; and setting forth the decided concessions in their favour, which have been extorted under circumstances so impressive, and from witnesses whose competency or credibility cannot be doubted.

Among the Converts here selected are to be found men of all ranks and professions in life, laymen and clergymen, statesmen, philosophers, historians, poets, and physicians; many of whom were not less distinguished for their extensive acquirements in learning and science, than for the homage they paid to religion. They exhibit instances of various attainments in knowledge, and of all descriptions of intellectual vigour,— of men who cannot be charged with acting from hypocrisy, or under the influence of prejudice, — who have been deeply versed in the philosophy of nature, and accustomed to the most cautious forms of scientific experiment, — and who, had the evidences of Revelation been weak, or founded on error, were in every respect qualified, and from the character of their previous habits and opinions, would have been most eager to detect and expose the imposture.
