Trait narcissism predicts adverse behaviours such as aggression, violence (Kjærvik & Bushman, 2021), and risk-taking (Leder et al., 2020). Furthermore, narcissism’s association with a lack of empathy (Urbonaviciute & Hepper, 2020) predicts adverse behaviours, such as offending rates (Hepper et al., 2014). On the other hand, narcissistic individuals are capable of acting empathetically towards others, but may not be motivated or skilled at doing so (Hepper et al., 2014; Kang & Lakshmanan, 2018). Consequently, it is still uncertain what drives narcissistic individuals’ lack of concern for others. Recent research suggests that social worldviews, especially a competitive worldview, may play a vital role in understanding narcissistic attitudes and behaviours, such as ideological attitudes (Zeigler-Hill et al., 2021; Zeigler-Hill et al, 2020), lack of trust (Dehaghi & Zeigler-Hill, 2021), risk-taking (Beigi & Zeigler-Hill, 2021), and pursuit of status (Zeigler-Hill et al., 2021). We are therefore interested in the possibility that narcissistic individuals may lack concern for others because of their tendency to view the world as a highly competitive environment and other people as primarily competitors. We propose to test whether different expressions of narcissism relate to empathy (negatively) and counter-empathy (positively) due to narcissistic individuals’ competitive worldviews. We recently completed a questionnaire-based study providing some evidence for this possibility, but we propose to test this question using an experimental design to test the mediation models. We predict that higher levels of all expressions of narcissism will be related to lower empathy and higher counter-empathy. Participants’ will read information designed to encourage a competitive worldview or that is unrelated to a competitive worldview (control). We expect narcissism in the control condition to relate positively to competitive worldview, positively to counter-empathy and negatively to empathy, replicating our earlier findings. We also predict that when competitive worldviews are induced to be high, all participants, regardless of their level of narcissism will be less empathetic, reducing the relation between narcissism and empathy. Specifically, when competitive worldviews are encouraged, they should be increased most for individuals low in narcissism, making them less empathetic, reducing the relation between narcissism and empathy. In addition, the manipulation of competitive worldviews should directly impact mean levels of empathy and counter-empathy. This pattern of results would support a mediation model in which the relation between narcissism and empathy is due to competitive worldview.

People vary in climate change skepticism, and in their views on disaster cause and prevention. For example, the United States (and especially Republicans) boast higher rates of climate skepticism than other countries (Pew, 2019). Research into individual differences that shape variation in climate related beliefs represents an important opportunity for those seeking ways to mitigate climate change and climate-related disasters (e.g., floods). In the current registered report, we propose a study that examines how individual difference in physical formidability, worldview, and affect relate to attitudes about disaster and climate change. We predict that highly formidable men will tend to endorse social inequality, hold status quo defensive worldviews, report lower levels of empathy, and report attitudes that promote disaster risk accumulation via lesser support for social intervention.

Weekday Worldviews is the first sociological investigation of attitudes towards science, worldviews, and psychological wellbeing amongst those attending public psychic nights in Britain. Hosted by psychic mediums at pubs, working men’s clubs, and hotels, often on weekday evenings, ‘psychic nights’ are increasingly common – frequently attracting women in working-class areas. Our project offers a unique look at the complex intersection of social demographics, and scientific and religious/spiritual worldviews as lived in late modernity from a “bottom-up” approach that focuses on the importance of particular English localities, alongside gender and class (Taves and Asprem, 2018). Understanding this phenomenon will shed helpful light on how mental wellbeing is perceived/sought/cultivated in an era of declining institutional religion. Suggesting that religious decline creates a void filled by alternative spiritual experiences that affirm individual significance, filial connection, and agency in a world that seems inexplicable despite scientific worldviews (Herbert and Bullock 2020), our project utilises a mixed-methods approach (surveys, observation, and interviews).

How is the reading of fiction (especially literary fiction) associated with the complexity of one's worldview?

The authors discuss results from two co-taught courses in Islamic studies shared as a virtual exchange between the University of Michigan (U-M), USA, and Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU), Russia. These courses were shared with the intent of expanding the range of perspectives to which the students were exposed and to provide an opportunity to experience the approach to education and to the subject studied in the partner country. The SPbU student cohort included graduates of Islamic religious colleges from across Russia who studied along with non-religious students specializing in Islamic studies. The U-M cohort included students of diverse religious, ethnic, and national backgrounds. We predict that higher levels of all expressions of narcissism will be related to lower empathy and that this relationship will be attenuated significantly when competitive worldviews are statistically controlled. More specifically, we predict that antagonism/rivalry will be related to lower empathy and that this relationship will be attenuated significantly when competitive worldviews are controlled. Because antagonism is a part of grandiose and vulnerable narcissism we expect the same pattern of results to hold for these expressions of narcissism. We are less certain that this pattern will hold for agentic extraversion/admiration and narcissistic neuroticism, but given their positive association with competitive worldview, we think this pattern is likely to hold for them too.

This curriculum unit is part of a larger curriculum developed around the broad theme of change. In this unit students will explore how a culture's myths and traditions reflect their environmental practices. As students actively explore environmental issues, their understandings of those issues change, which in turn fosters self-growth (i.e., change) as students reflect on their previously and newly held values. In addition to the broader questions of the larger curriculum--Can we affect change? Is change inevitable? How is change viewed?--students will be able to examine the power and authority that different cultures grant humans to manipulate and change their natural surroundings. In this process they will begin to understand the connotation of the term change and how the concept itself is only a template that is given meaning through different cultural lenses. With these three guiding questions a teacher will be able to create a context for children to question their own abilities to affect the natural world and whether these practices are consistent with their evolving environmental ethic. Contents of the unit include: (1) Rationale; (2) Organization; (3) Goals and Objectives; (4) Learning Activities; (5) Assessment; and (6) Subject Matter Overview. More literature is needed that focuses on the effectiveness of service learning projects in higher education, specifically how individual students are impacted. This study investigates the possible influence of an international service-learning experience on a student's worldview. The International Service-Learning Inventory was used to ask students a variety of questions on social justice, intercultural competencies, diversity, global awareness, democracy, civic engagement, and transformative learning. The study was conducted with University of Central Florida student participants (N = 9) enrolled in an international service-learning field experience in Botswana examining educational access and gender issues. The results demonstrated strong relationship among four factors: Community, Civic Engagement, Diversity, and Education & Leadership--of which were defined as a student's worldview. In addition, there were interaction effects with the four factors and gender and ethnicity and main effect sizes with the four factors and first generational students, Pell Grant recipients, and those who have traveled abroad. Because of the large effect size in the small population, this "pilot" or "exploratory" research suggests to the reader significant results may be found when examining larger populations.

The study of medieval and early modern geographic space, literary cartography, and spatial thinking at a time of rapid digitization in the Humanities offers new ways to investigate spatial knowledge and world perceptions in pre-modern societies. Digitization of cultural heritage collections, open source databases, and interactive resources utilizing a rich variety of source materials—place names, early modern cadastral maps, medieval literature and art, Viking Age and medieval runic inscriptions—provides opportunities to re-think traditional lines of research on spatiality and worldviews, encourage innovation in methodology, and engage critically with digital outcomes. In this book, Nordic scholars of philology, onomastics, history, geography, literary studies, and digital humanities examine multiple aspects of ten large- and small-scale digital spatial infrastructures from the early stages of development to the practical applications of digital tools for studying spatial thinking and knowledge in pre-modern sources and societies.

In this episode I talked to Damien Marie Athope. Damien is an activist turned educator who has spent many years working for social justice in various ways. He has spent the past few years learning about and spreading information about the history of religion from the time before it became the dominant mode of thought across much of the world. He has studied prehistory and talked to many archeologists and anthropologists who appreciated his work and his understanding of prehistoric times. In this interview we talk about his growth and how he came to the worldview he now holds including his path to atheism and anarchism while touching on his mode of thinking which he describes as axiology. Pageau is an Icon Carver by trade, a commentator on symbolism on youtube and devout Eastern Orthodox Christian. I met Pageau in 2017 at a Jordan Peterson speaking event. Jonathan was also a speaker there going over how art reveals patterns of being. Honestly, at the time I had no idea what he was talking about, but Jonathan would end up doing a number of dialogues with Jordan and responses to his videos. I followed his work because as someone coming to Jordan’s work from an atheist perspective I wanted to understand how it was being interpreted from the religious side, this was the same reason I followed Paul Vander Klay. When Pageau started engaging in Dialogues with John Vervaeke, I started to gain a deeper understanding of his approach and a better appreciation for his insights. In the process of my conversations with Paul Vander Klay and John Vervaeke I became increasingly interested in getting the chance to dialogue with Jonathan and understand his perspective more directly. I was especially intrigued for this interview after watching Jonathan's discussions with Rationality Rules and Adam Friend, who were both Atheist rationalists. I thought the conversations took interesting directions but suffered from being unable to accept each other's frames. I hoped I could manage that better and I believe I did. This turned out to be a fantastic and intriguing discussion for me that covered a lot of ground and established some good underlying foundations to bridge the mythological and scientific world view. There was a point near the end beyond which we could not progress but I believe that in getting there, much was gained. Kenneth Samples gave the presentation "Worldviews in Tension: Can Theology Inform the Practice of Science?" This was given as the keynote address in the Segerstrom Science Symposium at the Azusa Pacific University earlier this year on science and theology. He will be interacting with us through an Internet connection with Reasons to Believe in California. Kenneth Samples earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy and social science from Concordia University and his masterâs degree in theological studies from Talbot School of Theology. For seven years, Samples worked as senior research consultant and correspondence editor at the Christian Research Institute (CRI), and regularly co-hosted the popular call-in radio program, The Bible Answer Man, with Dr. Walter Martin. Kenneth is now a senior research scholar at Reasons to Believe, and is author and co-author of several books. He encourages believers to develop a logically defensible faith and challenges skeptics to engage Christianity at a philosophical level.

This is a follow-up study to the one we pre-registered in the project 'Social Dominance Orientation' under the title 'Psychological roots of the preference for social hierarchy'.

The current study will develop a new, more parsimonious structural framework for a comprehensive set of worldviews and beliefs associated with political violence by using items obtained from preexisting measures rather than developing novel items. I will compile measures that have been associated with support for political violence as well as factors resulting from a higher dimensional factor analysis of ‘isms’. I will include ‘isms’ because they offer a unique set of worldviews that have not been investigated in relation to support for political violence given the lack of obvious theoretical connection. I will collect data from a US university sample and use factor analysis to find the optimal number of dimensions and ant colony optimization to derive the factor structure (Olaru et al., 2019a). Research Question: Which structural model of political violence-promoting worldviews gives the most evidence for robustness and offers the greatest comprehensiveness and depth of insight in a US sample?

This chapter provides an overview of ecofeminist theory, simultaneously offering a method by which to critically analyse dominant views. Ecofeminist theories provide a means for deconstructing common ideologies that foster environmental degradation, climate denial, and climate inaction. This essay demonstrates the power of ecofeminist theory for lobbying and advocacy against climate inaction.

WorldViews: A Quarterly Review of Resources for Education and Action was a directory with a focus on listing educational resources and contacts. It was established in 1985 and is published quarterly by DataCenter until 1999. It is proposed that the ability of humans to flourish in diverse environments and evolve complex cultures reflects the following two underlying cognitive transitions. The transition from the coarse-grained associative memory of Homo habilis to the fine-grained memory of Homo erectus enabled limited representational redescription of perceptually similar episodes, abstraction, and analytic thought, the last of which is modeled as the formation of states and of lattices of properties and contexts for concepts. The transition to the modern mind of Homo sapiens is proposed to have resulted from onset of the capacity to spontaneously and temporarily shift to an associative mode of thought conducive to interaction amongst seemingly disparate concepts, modeled as the forging of conjunctions resulting in states of entanglement. The fruits of associative thought became ingredients for analytic thought, and vice versa. The ratio of associative pathways to concepts surpassed a percolation threshold resulting in the emergence of a self-modifying, integrated internal model of the world, or worldview.

I have developed a pedagogy and textbook for teaching logic centered on what I call "logical worldviews". A logical worldview examines the close connection between philosophical commitments and the logical principles and method for a particular historial logical system. The class examines multiple historical logical worldviews to show how philosophical positions have over time yielded corresponding changes in the development of logic. Such an approach has great benefits to teaching logic to undergraduates.

The decision-making literature shows that individuals are sensitive to the information they receive, with different information influencing decisions. However, real-world observations, especially in areas like sustainability policymaking, often reveal limited impact of information on policy outcomes. Beyond existing explanations for the (non)use of information, we previously hypothesised that goal ambiguity might be a key factor. Ambiguous goals allow for flexible interpretation and typically arise in contexts involving trade-offs between multiple objectives, where competing goal dimensions are presented without prioritisation and no clearly optimal solution is apparent. Such ambiguity may prompt decision-makers to rely more heavily on their personal worldviews to clarify their goals and to be more influenced by additional information, ultimately shaping their actions. Our previous experiment supported this hypothesis: both information and worldviews significantly influenced decisions, especially under ambiguous goal conditions. In these cases, worldviews were the strongest factor, while they had little, non-significant impact under clear goals. However, as noted in the literature, there is no clear, explicit, or agreed-upon operationalisation of the goal ambiguity construct. The experiment described in this preregistration aims to replicate our earlier findings and extend them by testing an alternative formulation of goal ambiguity. While the previous study operationalised ambiguity as an unclear overarching goal, the current design also includes a version in which ambiguity is created through the juxtaposition of two conflicting goal dimensions presented without any guidance or prioritisation.

In this article we propose a five-step sequenced approach to integrative interdisciplinary learning in undergraduate gateway courses. Drawing from the literature of interdisciplinarity, transformative learning theory, and theories of reflective learning, we utilize a sequence of five steps early in our respective undergraduate gateway courses to foster preliminary lessons crucial for integrative interdisciplinary learning. Collectively, these steps help students recognize their own worldviews evan as they will eventually understand and value the multiple disciplinary perspectives to be integrated in interdisciplinary work. The five steps discussed in this article are initial community-building activities, a class viewing of a segment from "The Muppet Show" featuring Harry Belafonte, a combination of class and small group discussion, an intellectual autobiography assignment, and our adaptations of "Smith Magazine's" Six-Word Memoirs.
