8NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940019125: Definitions In Use By The Visible And Near-infrared, And Thermal Working Groups
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Calibration Advisory Panel (CAP) is composed of calibration experts from each of the Earth Observing System (EOS) instruments, science investigation, and cross-calibration teams. These members come from a variety of institutions and backgrounds. In order to facilitate an exchange of ideas, and assure a common basis for communication, it was desirable to assemble this list of definitions. These definitions were developed for use by the visible and near-infrared working group, and the thermal infrared working group. Where necessary or appropriate, deviations from these for specific instruments or other sensor types are given in the individual calibration plans. The definitions contained in this document are derived, wherever possible, from definitions accepted by international and national metrological commissions including the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).

11Simulation Innovation In Naval Special Warfare By Utilizing Small Working Groups
By Rainville, Thomas A.
Naval Special Warfare has produced successful innovation by using small working groups. Naval Special Warfare deems an innovation successful if it results in a more efficient, less risky, more cost effective method to conduct special operations. The Quantum Leap program is an example of successful innovation in Naval Special Warfare produced by a small working group. How have these small groups been able to produce successful innovations? Michael McCaskey's Theory offers an explanation of how small working groups innovate. His theory is a generally accepted theory on how to produce innovation in the business world by using small working groups. McCaskey identified three variables needed to produce innovation: I) the small working group must have the support and protection of the leadership, 2) have access to resources, and 3) have autonomy from established structure within an organization. After interviews with senior Naval Special Warfare officers, two additional variables were deemed important. Ownership and the license to fail were added to McCaskey's three variables. This thesis will test which variables were or were not present during three Naval Special Warfare case studies where small working groups attempted to produce innovation. Two of the case studies successfully produced innovation, but the final case study failed to produce an innovation. This thesis will evaluate the five variables in each case study and attempt to explain why the innovation was a success or a failure.

16ERIC ED057408: The Effects On Students Of Working In Cooperative Groups: An Exploratory Study.
By ERIC
This study asks whether placing students in small, cooperative work groups results in redirecting student norms, climate and student interaction. Using a post-test only design, students in classes which daily used cooperative groups for the entire academic year were compared with comparable students from classes which used the lecture-discussion method. As to student norms, the cooperative groups students experience more peer pressure for involvement, and they assign greater importance to their peers' expectations. The climate in the cooperative groups classes is perceived as being less "relaxed." The cooperative groups students, however, do appear to be less "alienated" from the class. The cooperative groups students interact more frequently with their classmates, although this does not generalize to outside the class. They also view themselves as having lower levels of interpersonal competence. If a student filled a leadership position in the cooperative groups treatment he was much more likely to be affected by the treatment. The implications of the findings are explored for both the theory and practice of cooperative groups in the classroom. (Author)

19ERIC ED442947: Space, Mobility And The Education Of Minority Groups In Wales: The Survey Results. Patterns Of Participation In Adult Education And Training. Working Paper 10.
By ERIC
This study is part of a regional study in industrial South Wales on the determinants of participation and non-participation in post-compulsory education and training, with special reference to processes of change in the patterns of these determinants over time and to variations between geographical areas. The study combines contextual analysis of secondary data about education and training providers with a regional study of several generations of families in South Wales (a door-to-door survey of 1,104 representative householders), semi-structured interviews, and taped oral histories conducted in 1996-97. This study examined learning trajectories, defined in an earlier study, by area of residence, for non-participants by area and age, for delayed learners by area and age, for transitional learners by area and age, for lifetime learners by area and age-cohort, by place of birth, and by number of area moves. Ethnicity was also examined. The study found that traditional Christians of working-class families are more likely to be lifetime learners, as are middle-class families speaking Welsh and those who are more mobile, while fundamentalist Christians are less likely to engage in learning activities. Over time, the trend has been for all types of families to engage in more learning, including ethnic groups from other countries. (Contains 23 references.) (KC)

26ERIC EJ1145169: Does Like Seek Like?: The Formation Of Working Groups In A Programming Project
By ERIC
In a course of the degree of computer science, the programming project has changed from individual to teamed work, tentatively in couples (pair programming). Students have full freedom to team up with minimum intervention from teachers. The analysis of the working groups made indicates that students do not tend to associate with students with a similar academic performance, perhaps because general cognitive parameters do not drive the choice of academic partners. Pair programming seems to give great results, so the efforts of future research in this field should focus precisely on how these pairs are formed, underpinning the mechanisms of human social interactions. 28ERIC ED321016: Working With Our Publics. In-Service Education For Cooperative Extension. Module 5. Working With Groups And Organizations.
By ERIC
This module is the fifth in an inservice education series for extension professionals that consists of seven independent training modules. Its purpose is to provide the conceptual foundation and practical skills needed to work effectively with groups and organizations. Five units cover networking, communicating one-to-one, moving up and down and in and out through groups, making sense of organizations, and facilitating interorganizational relations. The 18-hour module consists of four major parts. The sourcebook includes a concise, readable synopsis of the content, purpose and basic assumptions, a selected annotated bibliography (26 items), and a list of 100 references. The leader's guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to conduct the workshop and suggestions for use of the other parts. Preliminary and follow-up activities are described, as well as those to take place during the workshop. Instructions for each of the five units are organized into two parts: a preparation page and a sequential guide for presenting the materials. The learner's packet includes, for each unit, an introduction, self-assessment instrument, worksheets, case studies, and TIP (Theory in Practice) sheets--one- or two-page how-tos. The last section lists instructional aids--a videotape, slides, and a game package--and provides masters for producing overhead transparencies. (YLB)

35ERIC ED623705: Developing Proficiency With Teaching Algebra In Teacher Working Groups: Understanding The Needs
By ERIC
This study reports on a professional learning (PL) initiative aimed at establishing a community of practice, through teacher working groups in which teachers can explore and develop their algebraic pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Here we report on teachers' solutions to three differently represented algebraic problems and explore what the nature of their solutions tells us about their algebraic reasoning and their PCK. The findings showed that most participants favoured only one solution and provided useful insights for the value of teacher working groups in PL activities to develop teachers' algebraic reasoning, understanding, and extend their range of problem-solving strategies.

36ERIC ED608278: Preliminary Report Summarizing The Results Of Interviews And Focus Groups With Employers, Autistic Individuals, Service Providers, And Higher Education Career Counselors On Perceptions Of Barriers And Facilitators For Neurodiverse Individuals In The Job Interview And Customer Interface Processes The Unemployment And Underemployment Of People With Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Have Been Well Documented, And Traditional Approaches To The Interview Process Identified As One Area That Poses Multiple Barriers That Disadvantage Qualified Candidates With Autism. This Report Summarizes Research Conducted By Researchers From The Yang-Tan Institute On Employment And Disability At Cornell University, In Partnership With The Owen Graduate School Of Management At Vanderbilt University, Examined Employment Experiences From The Perspective Of Autistic People, Employers, Service Providers, And Educational Institution Representatives Who Work With People With Autism. The Goal Of The Research Is To Explore And Depict Insights Into Factors That Influence The Interview Process And Job Success. This Study Is Part Of A Series Of Studies That Is Part Of An NSF C-Accel Study To Vanderbilt University Entitled Empowering Neurodiverse Populations For Employment. The Current Study Included Semi-structured Individual And Focus Group Interviews With Employers With Autism Affirmative Hiring Programs, Community Employment Service Providers, And Educational Representatives (career Counselors) Who Have Experience Of Hiring And Working With Individuals With ASD People On Employment, As Well As ASD People. A Total Of 23 Individuals Participated In The Study Through Group Or Individual Interviews. Content Analysis, Triangulation, Inter-rater Tests Were Performed To Captures The Themes And Agreement Of The Findings. The Findings Suggest That Employers, Autistic Individuals, And Service Providers Are Consistent In Experiencing Challenges And Opportunities That Influence The Interview And Employment Experience Of Autistic Individuals, Although From Different Perspectives. Particularly, ASD People Have Interview Preparation And Support, And That Employers Demonstrate Knowledge Of Neurodiversity And Willingness To Alter The Traditional Interview Process Aids The Interview And Job Success. Employers That We Interviewed Were All Involved In Autism Hiring Programs. Therefore, Their Responses Often Highlight The Utilization Of Strategies That Minimize Challenges That Are Often Reported By Autistic Individuals During Interviews. While These Organizations Are More Cognizant Of The Needs Of Autistic Applicants/employees, The Employers' Comments Suggest That Many Managers Continue To Need Support Even After Autism Awareness Training. Their Comments Also Underline A Potential Issue; That Is, Human Resource (HR) Professionals Or Managers Who Know The Needs Of Autistic Applicants May Not Always Be Present To Support These Applicants Or To Influence The Hiring Decision. The unemployment and underemployment of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have been well documented, and traditional approaches to the interview process identified as one area that poses multiple barriers that disadvantage qualified candidates with autism. 49ERIC ED088983: Health And Nutritional Status Of Working And Non-Working Mothers In Poverty Groups.
By ERIC
The aim of this study was to examine the health and nutritional status of low-income women in Upstate New York and to identify problems that interfere with their employment. Questionnaires on health and work, complete medical and employment histories, physical examination, laboratory tests, dental examination and diet recalls were obtained for 469 low-income women, mothers of at least one teen-age child. Among the major findings are the following: The greater the total number of current medical complaints that the women reported, the less likely they were to be employed. Among these complaints neurasthenic symptoms including tiredness, insomnia, headaches and nervousness together were significantly more common among the non-working groups. Physical and mental disabilities, documented by examination, were also associated with unemployment. Obesity was the most common nutritional problem encountered. Unemployment was related to obesity, and the incidence of unemployment rose directly with the degree of fatness. The association between unemployment and obesity could be explained as being due to the coexistence of diseases known to be complications of obesity, such as hypertensive heart disease and diabetes. Variables correlated with current welfare status (welfare dependency) included absence of an employed husband, disabilities arising in early life and the presence of chronic disease. The total number of years a woman had been employed since leaving school was related directly to education and job skills and inversely to the number of children and number of pregnancies.
