1Learning With Web Technologies After Pandemic Situation. (Revised Edition)

By

ABSTRACT: The emerging technology must not yet be universally accepted by the Web community, but its acceptance must be steadily increasing. Its level of acceptance can be low, but if it is steadily low and not increasing, then it could not be considered emerging. Its level of acceptance can also be high, but if it is extremely high, (even if its popularity is steadily increasing), then it would be considered an established technology and no longer emerging. So that is why it is a good idea to keep updating the list of technologies that can be considered emerging. The adoption level of emerging web technologies is on the rise in academic settings. These technologies include blogs, wikis, etc. A blog is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, description of events, or other material such as graphics or video. A Wikipedia is a collection of Web pages that are linked to each other, and reflect the collaborative works of many authors.

4ERIC EJ1142387: Students' Views About The Problem Based Collaborative Learning Environment Supported By Dynamic Web Technologies

By

The purpose of this study was to design a problem based collaborative learning environment supported by dynamic web technologies and to examine students' views about this learning environment. The study was designed as a qualitative research. Some 36 students who took an Object Oriented Programming I-II course at the department of computer programming in a public university participated in the study. The Object Oriented Programming I-II course was designed by incorporating different dynamic web technologies (Edmodo, Google Services, and Mind42) and the collaborative problem solving method by Nelson (1999). For the implementation process, students worked on real problem scenarios and ultimately produced software. During this process students worked in a learning environment supported by dynamic web technologies in order to solve the problems. To determine students' views on this learning environment a semi-structured interview form was prepared; this consisted of questions on the learning environment supported by dynamic web technologies where collaborative problem solving methods were implemented. At the end of the course, focus group interviews were conducted with collaborative learning groups. The interview data were analyzed through content analysis. The results showed that 4 themes emerged, namely: positive aspects of the learning environment, difficulties faced in the learning environment, advantages of the learning environment, and skills gained as a result of the project. The results suggest that problem based collaborative learning methods and dynamic web technologies can be used in the community college learning environment.

5ERIC EJ1084210: I-SERF: An Integrated Self-Evaluated And Regulated Framework For Deploying Web 2.0 Technologies In The Educational Process

By

In this paper we propose i-SERF (integrated-Self Evaluated and Regulated Framework) an integrated self-evaluated and regulated framework, which facilitates synchronous and asynchronous education, focusing on teaching and learning in higher education. The i-SERF framework is a two-layered framework that takes into account various elements of existing frameworks, introducing though as a new element the means of a self-evaluation, self-feeding and regulation mechanism. This mechanism is based on the performance of students, on the students' answers to appropriately structured questionnaires and on the online monitoring of the supporting platform's parameters. The outcome derived from a "self-evaluation" process is then feeding i-SERF in order to obtain self-regulation, for the next deployment. In this way, i-SERF remains alive and progressing. The proposed framework aims to offer the needed background for designing Web 2.0 educational platforms that may exhibit continuous improvement functions, providing in that way considerable benefits to both students and tutors in various fields. A pilot implementation, using an education-oriented suite with enriched interactive elements supporting a variety of terminal devices, combined with a thorough assessment that utilizes advanced statistical tools has revealed the potentials of the platform to successfully deploy the principles of the i-SERF framework to yield powerful learning experiences and high quality interactions between students and teachers.

8DTIC ADA622997: Adapting My Weather Impacts Decision Aid (MyWIDA) To Additional Web Application Server Technologies

By

My Weather Impacts Decision Aid (MyWIDA) is a software system that evaluates environmental impacts on air and surface combat systems using weather forecasts. The program ingests forecast data and references combat system environmental thresholds to determine and display the relevant impacts. MyWIDA is currently deployed on Oracle's Glassfish application server and uses Hyper Structured Query Language (SQL) Database (HSQLDB) for its database. The program is being converted to allow it to also be deployed on RedHat's JBoss application server while using Oracle's database system. One of the drivers of this conversion is that it would allow MyWIDA to be seamlessly integrated into the weather component of the Distributed Common Ground System -- Army (DCGS--A), a multifaceted intelligence software suite that is a US Army program of record. All modules of MyWIDA were successfully deployed on the new application server, with modified build scripts and updated web.xml files implemented. Further, the database was created successfully in Oracle after extensive editing of the scripts used with HSQLDB. Finally, Oracle database was fully integrated into MyWIDA, enabling the program to run on any combination of application server (JBoss or Glassfish) and database (HSQLDB or Oracle).

25DTIC ADA479785: T-Check In Technologies For Interoperability: Web Services And Security--Single Sign-On

By

A single sign-on (SSO) solution is intended to provide a single authentication point for a set of Web services. The SSO solution forwards the necessary authentication information to the Web services, which in turn authenticate the end user to legacy systems that implement the Web services functionality. This technical note presents the results of applying the T-Check approach in an initial investigation of two Web services standards, WS-Security and SAML, to create an SSO solution that works inside a single organization. This approach involves (1) formulating hypotheses about the technology and (2) examining these hypotheses against specific criteria through hands-on experimentation. The outcome of this two-stage approach is that the hypotheses are either fully or partially sustained or refuted. In this report, four hypotheses based on claims found in experience reports and on vendor Web sites are examined: (1) it is possible to implement SSO for the two Web services using SAML and WS-Security; (2) it is fairly easy to implement a basic SSO solution; (3) the SSO solution will not have a major impact on the runtime behavior of the system; and (4) the SSO solution can provide the required access control. The first three hypotheses were sustained; it was not necessary to implement the fourth one to list options for adding access control.

26ERIC EJ991844: Exploring Factors That Predict Preservice Teachers' Intentions To Use Web 2.0 Technologies Using Decomposed Theory Of Planned Behavior

By

This study investigated factors that predict preservice teachers' intentions to use Web 2.0 technologies in their future classrooms. The researchers used a mixed-methods research design and collected qualitative interview data (n = 7) to triangulate quantitative survey data (n = 286). Results indicate that positive attitudes and perceptions of perceived usefulness are significant predictors of preservice teachers' intentions to use Web 2.0 technologies. Additional findings indicate that preservice teachers intend to use blogs, wikis, and social networking in their future classrooms to improve student learning, student-student and student-teacher interaction, collaborative learning, student writing ability, and sharing content knowledge. Although preservice teachers intend to use Web 2.0 technologies due to these pedagogical benefits, they believe that successful use of Web 2.0 depends on the meaningful integration of these technologies with the subject being taught, learning goals, and age level of their students. This study has implications for teacher educators who are preparing preservice teachers to use Web 2.0 technologies in their classrooms. (Contains 2 tables and 3 figures.)

33Building A Transnational Biosurveillance Network Using Semantic Web Technologies: Requirements, Design, And Preliminary Evaluation.

By

This article is from Journal of Medical Internet Research , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Antimicrobial resistance has reached globally alarming levels and is becoming a major public health threat. Lack of efficacious antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems was identified as one of the causes of increasing resistance, due to the lag time between new resistances and alerts to care providers. Several initiatives to track drug resistance evolution have been developed. However, no effective real-time and source-independent antimicrobial resistance monitoring system is available publicly. Objective: To design and implement an architecture that can provide real-time and source-independent antimicrobial resistance monitoring to support transnational resistance surveillance. In particular, we investigated the use of a Semantic Web-based model to foster integration and interoperability of interinstitutional and cross-border microbiology laboratory databases. Methods: Following the agile software development methodology, we derived the main requirements needed for effective antimicrobial resistance monitoring, from which we proposed a decentralized monitoring architecture based on the Semantic Web stack. The architecture uses an ontology-driven approach to promote the integration of a network of sentinel hospitals or laboratories. Local databases are wrapped into semantic data repositories that automatically expose local computing-formalized laboratory information in the Web. A central source mediator, based on local reasoning, coordinates the access to the semantic end points. On the user side, a user-friendly Web interface provides access and graphical visualization to the integrated views. Results: We designed and implemented the online Antimicrobial Resistance Trend Monitoring System (ARTEMIS) in a pilot network of seven European health care institutions sharing 70+ million triples of information about drug resistance and consumption. Evaluation of the computing performance of the mediator demonstrated that, on average, query response time was a few seconds (mean 4.3, SD 0.1×102 seconds). Clinical pertinence assessment showed that resistance trends automatically calculated by ARTEMIS had a strong positive correlation with the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-Net) (ρ = .86, P < .001) and the Sentinel Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance in Switzerland (SEARCH) (ρ = .84, P < .001) systems. Furthermore, mean resistance rates extracted by ARTEMIS were not significantly different from those of either EARS-Net (∆ = ±0.130; 95% confidence interval –0 to 0.030; P < .001) or SEARCH (∆ = ±0.042; 95% confidence interval –0.004 to 0.028; P = .004). Conclusions: We introduce a distributed monitoring architecture that can be used to build transnational antimicrobial resistance surveillance networks. Results indicated that the Semantic Web-based approach provided an efficient and reliable solution for development of eHealth architectures that enable online antimicrobial resistance monitoring from heterogeneous data sources. In future, we expect that more health care institutions can join the ARTEMIS network so that it can provide a large European and wider biosurveillance network that can be used to detect emerging bacterial resistance in a multinational context and support public health actions.

37DTIC ADA418544: Assessing The Potential Value Of Semantic Web Technologies In Support Of Military Operations

By

Recent military operations have redefined the way modern warfare is waged. In a deliberate effort to achieve and retain information dominance and decision superiority, many innovative technologies have emerged to assist the human war fighter. Unquestionably, these technologies have generated resounding successes on the battlefield, the likes of which have never been seen. With all the success, however, there are still areas for improvement as the potential exists for further reducing already short sensor-to-shooter times. The current World Wide Web (WWW) is largely a human-centric information space where humans exchange and interpret data (2 Berners-Lee, 1 1999). The Semantic Web (SWEB) is not a separate Web, but an extension of the current one in which content is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation (Berners-Lee et al). The result is the availability of the various backgrounds, experiences, and abilities of the contributing communities through the self-describing content populating the SWEB (2 Berners-Lee, 1999). This thesis assesses current SWEB technologies that promise to make disparate data sources machine interpretable for use in the construction of actionable knowledge with the intent of further reducing sensor-to-shooter times. The adoption of the SWEB will quietly be realized and soon machines will prove to be of greater value to war fighting. When machines are able to interpret and process content before human interaction and analysis begins, their value will be further realized. This off-loading, or delegation, will produce faster sensor-to-shooter times and assist in achieving the speed required to achieve victory on any battlefield.

This paper illustrates the benefits of inserting a semantic layer into information systems that use N-Tier architectures. By introducing the Ontology and Semantic services above the data tier, we succeed in not only specifying semantics but also in integrating software components into the enterprise. This design allows us to integrate legacy systems, or RDBMS and Web services, without software development.

42DTIC ADA443683: Acquiring Evolving Technologies: Web Services Standards

By

Software development projects rarely are started or proceed without risks involving the technologies used. Typically, many facets of a project, such as system functionality and tool support, depend on the availability of a specific technology. This dependency poses risks: the required technology can disappear within the project's life cycle or a promised technology may not be available when it is required. A popular software technology today, Web services standards, is a widely supported approach to implementing a service-oriented architecture. Because Web services standards promise system interoperability and flexibility to large projects, commercial and government organizations are including it as the cornerstone of future computer-based systems. In fact, many systems currently being designed assume the availability of products built upon a stable and effective set of Web services standards. This assumption presents project stakeholders with a large technology availability risk. This technical note discusses some of the challenges of using Web services standards and presents the results generated by an assessment tool used to track the appropriateness of using this technology. The appendix includes an example built using the authors' opinions about the current level of appropriateness of using Web services standards in a typical, large software-intensive project.

44ERIC EJ908110: Web-Based Lecture Technologies And Learning And Teaching: A Study Of Change In Four Australian Universities

By

The uptake of web-based lecture technologies for recording and delivering live lectures has increased markedly in recent years. Students have responded positively, and for many their use has transformed learning--freeing them up from rigid timetables by providing choice in lecture attendance and supporting learning by extending the lecture experience and enabling them to revisit key concepts and ideas in their own time. Less transformational has been the impact on teaching. Although changing attendance patterns and disquiet about the quality of learning are of concern to many, lecturers have largely responded by simply modifying lectures. For most, the challenges of catering for the learning needs of a cohort with variable lecture attendance have not been addressed at a whole of the curriculum level. The technologies have been added on, rather than integrated into the curriculum. This paper will review the changes taking place in learning and teaching, explore the reluctance to embrace more wholesale change to the curriculum, and discuss the implications for institutions in the face of ongoing change. By

This paper focuses on the role of multimodal technologies in facilitating reflective processes and the subsequent assessment of reflectivity for students in pre-professional programs. Reflective practice has been established as a critical tool for developing identity in and on practice. This paper will focus firstly on reviewing salient literature about reflective practice and its use with pre-professional teachers. It will then report the processes and outcomes of the authors' practices, as supported by the literature. Various reflective practices will be examined and explained. The role of the E-Portfolio (Electronic Portfolio) as the vehicle for housing student reflective practice will be briefly explored and the process for using author-developed rubrics for assessing levels of reflective practice will also be shared. Suggestions for replication in other disciplines, while being implicit, will also be made explicit. (Contains 2 figures.)

48DTIC ADA488432: T-Check In Technologies For Interoperability: Business Process Management In A Web Services Context

By

In Business Process Management (BPM), many technologies are available to describe, analyze, execute, and monitor business processes. Composition languages are one type of BPM technology. Through the use of composition languages, business processes that are implemented through software and available as web services can be combined into new processes. The most popular language in this field is the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL). BPEL allows a user to declaratively combine existing services within and outside an organization to implement a full business process. This technical note presents the results of applying the T-Check approach in an initial investigation of BPEL and related technologies for the implementation of BPM. This approach involves (1) formulating hypotheses about the technology and (2) examining these hypotheses against specific criteria through hands-on experimentation. The outcome of this two-stage approach is that the hypotheses are either fully or partially sustained or refuted. In this report, three hypotheses are examined: (1) business process descriptions can be exchanged between different design tools and runtime engines; (2) the development effort for integration is reduced through the use of a BPM tool; and (3) business processes can be changed dynamically at runtime. From the T-Check investigation, the first two hypotheses are partially sustained and the last hypothesis is fully sustained.

3Ramona

By

Book's cover

Ramona, a novel written by Helen Hunt Jackson (1884), is the story of a part-Scottish and part-Native American orphan girl growing up and getting married in Southern California, suffering racial discrimination and hardship. Originally serialized in the Christian Union on a weekly basis, the novel became immensely popular. Overall, it has had more than 300 printings, been made into four film versions, and has been performed as an outdoor play annually since 1923. The impact the novel had on the culture and image of Southern California was enormous. Its romanticization of Mexican colonial life gave the region a unique cultural identity and its publication coincided with the arrival of railroad lines to the region, bringing in countless tourists who wanted to see the locations in the novel. 4Extracts from 'The New and Complete Newgate Calendar', Vol. 1

By

Volume One of the New and Complete Newgate Calendar, covering the years 1700 through 1723, relates stories of British trials, the persons accused and the crimes committed. It is primarily based upon contemporary newspaper and pamphlet accounts of these trials. Where the criminal is particularly well known, such as the highwayman, burglar and escape artist Jack Sheppard, other sources were used as well. The readings used here are selected to illustrate different aspects of the eighteenth century criminal world and the British legal system.(Summary by Roy Shreiber)

5Ramona (version 2)

By

Book's cover

Set in Old California in the wake of the Mexican-American War, Ramona is two stories at once. It is the story of the love between a part-Native American orphan girl, Ramona, and Alessandro, a young Indian sheepherder. It is also the story of racial prejudice and the clash between cultures as California changes from a Spanish colony to an American territory. Ramona is the ward of Señora Gonzaga Moreno, who despises the girl for her race but honors the dying wish of the Señora's sister, Ramona's foster-mother, to raise her as her own. Señora Moreno embodies the aloof arrogance of Spanish nobility, hating both the Americans who dispute her claim to her vast rancho, and the Indians, whom she places in the same social class with slaves. Her only semblance of love is reserved for her son Felipe.<br><br> Despite the Señora's machinations, Ramona and Alessandro fall in love, and eventually elope. But their life together is not an easy one, as they roam the Southern California searching for a home. Their many hardships cannot dull their love for one another, but they soon take a toll that changes their lives forever. (Introduction by Christine Dufour)
