3Longitudinal Associations Between Adolescents Social Media Use & Depressive Symptoms - The Mediating Role Of Self-Esteem

By

There are several studies demonstrating associations between heavy use of social media and depression in adolescents. Since there are only few longitudinal studies analysing these associations, we will have a closer look on potential long-term effects of adolescents' social media use on depressive symptoms using data of the sixth and seventh sweep of the Millenium Cohort Study (MCS). As various studies have shown associations between self-esteem and psychological wellbeing, as well as between self-esteem and social media use, we will analyse self-esteem as a potential mediator. Furthermore, we will have a look on potential gender differences.

5ERIC ED564078: The Use Of Student Self-Report Screening Data For Mental Health Risk Surveillance

By

Child and adolescent mental health disorders are known to increase the risk for numerous poor school and life outcomes for children and adolescents including suicidal ideation and attempts, academic underachievement and school dropout, substance use and disorders, and physical fighting or victimization by a weapon (Bradley, Doolittle, & Bartolotta, 2008; Brown & Grumet, 2000; Dowdy, Furlong, & Sharkey, 2012; O'Connell, Boat, & Warner, 2009). A preventive approach to mitigating associated impairment, morbidity, and poor outcomes in school settings has been advised for at least four decades (Cowen et al., 1973). The widespread adoption of preventive models, methods, and procedures for achieving this goal, however, has remained nascent in U.S. schools (Jamieson & Romer, 2005). Schools have long been identified as the community context of choice for delivering preventive mental health services. As major societal institutions, schools provide an organizational structure that reaches more children with more continuity than primary care, or any other child and family service setting (Doll & Cummings, 2008). Schools, however, are rather unprepared to provide preventive mental health services due to limited staff training, time commitment to educational service delivery, and a lack of assessment methods for delivering services such as universal screening (Fox, Halpern, & Forsyth, 2008; Levitt, Saka, Romanielli, & Hoagwood, 2007; O'Connell et al., 2009). Universal screening is the first step in any preventive, secondary prevention, or early intervention program for mental health problems (Levitt et al., 2007). A National Academies of Sciences report identified four levels of prevention, including: (1) universal prevention where community risk factors, such as school safety, are of interest, (2) selective prevention where high risk groups, such as children exposed to maternal depression, are identified for services, (3) indicated prevention where screening for behavioral and sub-syndromal symptoms is used to identify children for early intervention services [defined as behavioral or emotional risk (BER), for the purposes of this study], and (4) assessment for detection, diagnosis, and treatment of a mental health disorders (O'Connell et al., 2009). A central impediment to the adoption of universal screening measures for school-based screening of large groups of children has been the practicality of such measures, especially the associated personnel costs and test administration time that competes directly with the demand for academic instructional time (Dowdy, Ritchey, & Kamphaus, 2010). Although newer screening measures such as the one used in this study require only a few minutes per child, the practicality of screening thousands of students in numerous schools is yet to be determined (Dever, Raines, & Barclay, 2012). The current investigation sought to determine: (1) Whether or not a brief self-report screener of behavioral and emotional risk (BER) could be used universally in middle and high school with little concern about interference with instructional time or other practical concerns. (2) If the screener would produce score differences between schools that were consistent with school administrator concerns, which predicted that some schools were characterized by more adolescent BER than others. (3) Whether or not demographic variables such as child race/ethnicity, gender, SES, or grade level were strongly associated with screener scores. (4) If individual screener results demonstrated discriminant validity by assessing their association with classification as eligible for special education programs due to the presence of severe behavioral and emotional problems or diagnosed mental health disorders. Data were collected from 3 middle and 4 high schools in a mid-sized city in the Southeastern United States. A brief screening measure, the BESS Student Form, was administered to all students in groups, usually in homerooms, by school district employed school psychologists and school psychology doctoral students. Descriptive statistics for the sample by school are shown in Table 1. In order to test whether the screener would produce score differences between schools that were consistent with school administrator concerns, an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) comparing schools was conducted. Socioeconomic status produced the most non-significant findings in that free or reduced lunch eligibility status, unlike the other demographic variables, did not produce any statistically significant differences between the BESS factors. In relationship to the fourth research question, special education status was linked statistically to only two of the BESS factors: adjustment (F = 60.10, p < 0.001) and internalizing (F = 47.30, p < 0.001). Special education status was not a significant predictor of inattention/hyperactivity or school problems in the present study. Student self-report screening results may provide schools and community stakeholders with systematic data about mental health risk that may be used to address and monitor the mental health needs of adolescents in school. While a full cost and practicality analysis of this measure and methodology was not undertaken for the purposes of this study, the ability to gather these individual student data from an entire school taking less than one hour of instructional time per academic year using a relatively low cost screening instrument portends greater practicality than has been the case in the past. A clear "gold standard" among such school-based screening measures has yet to emerge based on consensus use; therefore, more research is needed regarding the choice of screening assessment and direct comparisons to other well-known clinical screening tools are needed. Tables and figures are appended.

7ERIC ED471585: Improving Student Performance In Fifth Grade Band Through The Use Of Student Self-Monitoring.

By

An action research project was developed and implemented using student self monitoring of higher order thinking skills and task management to improve the music skills of a fifth grade beginning band (n=30) from a small middle school located in a rural midwest village. Evidence of the problem was documented with a performance test, a written test, anecdotal records, and teacher journal entries. Analysis of the probable cause data revealed that the students lacked higher order thinking skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and task management skills. Review of the curriculum contest and instructional strategies revealed an emphasis on information giving, a lack of planning for skill development and little emphasis placed on higher order thinking skills. A review of the suggested solution strategies, by knowledgeable others, combined with an analysis of the problem setting, resulted in the selection of using student self monitoring of higher order thinking skills and task management skills to improve fifth grade beginning band students' music skills. Based on analysis of the data, the use of student self monitoring had little impact on improving the music skills of the fifth grade beginning band students. Few differences in the test scores, quizzes, and homework were noted between the treatment group and the non-treatment group. Appendixes include: scale exercise; pretest; categories for treatment or control groups; self-monitoring checklist for treatment group; alternate checklist for control group; and posttest. (Contains 10 figures, 6 tables, and 27 references.) (Author/BT)

8The Health Beliefs Of Patient With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Who Use Herbs As A Complement To Self-care

By

Diabetes mellitus type 2 patients who have a tendency to use herbs, are based on the patient's health belief that herbal medicine is a natural ingredient that has efficacy and is safe. This study aimed to explore health beliefs as predictors of herbal use as a complement to diabetes self-care. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 230 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had been clinically diagnosed, received medical treatment and used herbs. The data was collected using a questionnaire at seven community health centers (Puskesmas) in Surabaya City. Data analysis using Partial Least Square. The indicator of health belief variables has a loading factor value>0.5: perceived vulnerability and severity (0.820), perceived benefits (0.739), perceived barriers (0.822), sense of self-efficacy (0.695). Health beliefs have a significant effect on the use of herbs as a complement to diabetes self-care, the value of T>1.97 (T>10.07). Health beliefs consisting of perceived vulnerability and severity, perceived benefits, perceived inhibition, and perceived self-efficacy were strong predictors associated with the use of herbs as a complement to diabetes self-care. Nurses as part of health workers must pay attention to patient health beliefs in providing education to patients.

13Triadic Model Of Future Self-Identification On Psychological Well-Being, Alcohol Use, And Academic And Career Derailment In The Face Of A Global Crisis

By

The onset and persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic created a new, shared global domain. Nearly every individual around the globe was impacted, increasing uncertainty for everybody. College students who are graduating may be at increased risk under these circumstances because they are at a major transitional period in their lives. As such, college students may be subject to heightened uncertainty in an economically, socially, and physically unstable world. Future self-identification (FSI), a triadic construct that illustrates the relationship an individual has between their current and future self (Bixter et al., 2020), shows self-control as an intermediary variable between future self-identification and academic outcomes (GPA). Additionally, future self-identification is an important predictor of psychological well-being. Therefore, it is important to see if an individual’s future self-identification prior to the pandemic can predict psychological well-being, alcohol use, and academic/career goals during the pandemic. The first research question will address if FSI will act as a predictor for these three outcomes. The second research question will address a mediation relationship testing if psychological resources (i.e., self-control; emotion regulation) explain the relationship between FSI and pandemic outcomes. Lastly, the third research question will address a moderation relationship testing to see if FSI moderates the relationship between psychological resources prior and during the onset of COVID. Exploratory questions will address the impact of demographic factors.

14Mental Health Predictors Of Substance Use: The Moderating Roles Of Coping Skills And Self-efficacy

By

Substance use is prevalent in young adults, particularly college students, and poses health risks. The present study therefore aims to explore to the extent to which mental health symptoms predict hazardous alcohol use and prescription drug misuse using a longitudinal research design. Individual differences in coping and self-efficacy will also be tested to understand what individual factors could put college students at greater risk for using substances in the context of experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression symptoms. This project will serve as an undergraduate honors thesis for Ruth Miller.

15Social Media Use And Disordered Eating: The Mediating Role Of Self-Esteem In Predicting Bulking And Cutting Among Young Men

By

Young men are increasingly influenced by fitness content on social media apps like Instagram and TikTok, where extreme body standards are often portrayed as both desirable and easily attainable. This has contributed to the growing popularity of bulking (muscle-gain phase) and cutting (fat-loss phase) dietary practices. While these behaviours can be part of a balanced lifestyle, for some it can lead to unhealthy habits and even disordered eating. Fitness influencers frame these practices as healthy and disciplined, but emerging research suggests engagement in such lifestyle may be linked to low self-esteem, disordered eating and body image issues. Most existing research in this area has been focused on women, leaving a gap in understanding how social media affects young men in terms of self-esteem and body image. This project aims to address the gap by exploring how social media use can predict bulking and cutting in young men and whether self-esteem plays a mediating role in that relationship. The study will use a cross-sectional design. Participants will be young men aged 18 to 25 years old, recruited through SONA, social media and gym networks. Participants will complete an online survey hosted on Qualtrics, which includes measures of social media use, self-esteem, disordered eating (e.g., EDE-Q) and bespoke bulking/cutting behaviours questionnaire. Data analysis will be carried using SPSS or JASP. The research will offer insights into men's mental health and body image and the findings could help inform social media literacy programmes and public health interventions.

20AI Literacy As A Key To Trust? The Importance Of Self-efficacy And Anxiety In The Use Of AI.

By

Algorithms have always been used in a variety of technologies and areas of application and have become an integral part of our everyday lives. The entire internet is based on algorithms: Online searches, social media, travel websites or navigation apps - and artificial intelligence (AI) is also fundamentally based on algorithms (Rainie & Anderson, 2017). With the spread of tools such as ChatGPT in November 2022, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) was made accessible to a wide audience. In our digitalized world, mastery of technology, especially AI, has become a core skill. This competence, also known as AI literacy, is essential to counteract the growing digital divide that is opening up between AI-informed and -competent users and less informed individuals. Without adequate training and understanding, parts of society are at risk of being digitally excluded (Wienrich et al., 2022). The ability to use AI effectively and safely requires a deep understanding of these technologies and how they work. This has a direct impact on trust in AI applications, which in turn significantly influences usage behavior (Lee & See, 2004). In this context, the educational aspect is becoming increasingly important in order to strengthen social integration and trust in AI.

21Recovery Self-efficacy As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between After-hours ICT Use And Recovery

By

This project builds on the current research on Recovery Experience (e.g. Sonnentag & Fritz, 2007) in relation to the after-hours information and communication technology use (e.g. Heissler et al., 2022). It aims to clarify the role and functioning of person’s internal resources in the relationship between the mentioned variables (e.g. Sonnentag et al. 2022) with a specific focus on the moderating effect of Recovery Self-Efficacy (a questionnaire adapted to Czech by Sonnentag & Kruel, 2006) on the aforementioned relationship.

23The Influence Of Self-compassion On The Association Between Instagram Use And Well-being.

By

The study is planned as part of a master's thesis for the degree of Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Siegen. The present study has two research objectives. First, it investigates whether participants who complete a brief writing task to improve their expression in self-compassion (experimental group) (Neff et al., 2021) show increased well-being in the context of passive Instagram use compared to participants who complete a neutral writing task (control group). Second, we exploratively analyze whether the positive effect of the self-compassion writing task on well-being depends on (1) age, (2) educational attainment, or (3) Instagram usage time. These exploratory analyses result from sociodemographic differences in well-being (Thielen & Kroll, 2013) and the influence of intensity of use (Tsitsika et al., 2014).

24Examining The Relations Between Years Of Teaching Experience, Two Types Of Teacher Self-Efficacy, Motivational Strategy Use, And Job Satisfaction

By

Teacher self-efficacy refers to a teacher’s confidence in their ability to achieve instructional goals. This efficacy can be influenced by various factors, including years of teaching experience. In turn, teacher self-efficacy can have significant impacts on teacher job satisfaction, teaching strategies, and the achievement of instructional goals. However, measuring self-efficacy as a single factor may not fully capture a teacher’s confidence in specific teaching skills, such as motivating students. The influence of specific types of self-efficacy on teachers’ behavior such as job satisfaction or the use of motivational strategies also needs to be explored. There is also no clear consensus on the development of self-efficacy across teachers’ careers, as some studies suggested a negative association or modest effects. Therefore, this study aims to examine the association between years of teaching experience, teacher self-efficacy, motivational strategy use, and job satisfaction.

25UPDATE Longitudinal Associations Between Adolescents Social Media Use & Depressive Symptoms - The Mediating Role Of Self-Esteem

32Exploring The Use And Effects Of Deliberate Self-Harm Websites: An Internet-Based Study.

By

This article is from Journal of Medical Internet Research , volume 15 . Abstract Background: In the United Kingdom, rates of deliberate self-harm (DSH) are rising. Alongside this, there has been an increase in the number of websites available with DSH content, and the Internet is known as a valuable resource for those who feel isolated by their condition(s). However, there is little and contradictory evidence available on the effects of using such websites. Further research is therefore required to examine the use and effects of DSH websites. Objective: Our objectives were to explore (1) the reasons people engage in the use of self-harm forums/websites, (2) the beliefs of users of self-harm forums regarding the role of such websites, (3) how the use of self-harm forums/websites modulates self-harm behaviors, and (4) other ways that self-harm forums affect the lives of individuals who use them. Methods: Data were collected by a questionnaire hosted on 20 websites with self-harm content. Participants were self-selected from users of these sites. Results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple thematic analysis. Results: In total, 329 responses were received with 91.8% (302/329) from female site users. The majority of participants (65.6%, 187/285) visited these sites at least twice per week, and most participants used the sites to find information (78.2%, 223/285) or participate in the forums (68.4%, 195/285). Positive effects of website use such as gaining help and support, isolation reduction, and a reduction in self-harm behaviors were reported by a large number of participants. However, smaller but important numbers reported negative effects including worsened self-harm, being triggered to self-harm, and additional negative physical and psychological effects. Conclusions: This is the first multisite study to explore DSH website use in depth. There are clear and important benefits to engaging in website use for many individuals; however, these are not experienced by all website users. Negative effects were experienced by moderate numbers following website use, and clinicians should consider the impact of a patient’s website use when consulting.

38ERIC ED038365: The Use Of The Portable Videotape Recorder In Helping Teachers Self-Evaluate Their Teaching Behavior.

By

The stated null hypothesis of this study is that "there will be no significant difference in criterion instrument scores which measure the numbers of types of questions (basic, leading, probing) which teachers ask their students among the following groups of inservice elementary teachers who purposefully self-evaluate their teaching by (1) self videotapes, (2) self audiotapes, (3) a combination of self videotapes and model videotapes, and (4) reflective evaluation only (i.e., without mechanical or electronic equipment)." Based on a modified version of the pre-post-test control group design, the experiment involved 78 experienced elementary school teachers randomly assigned to one of the four evaluation-treatment groups and one of the two time-treatment groups (either a single, concentrated evaluative procedure or one extended over a 3-week period of time). Included in the design of the study was systematic instruction in questioning skills techniques and in the use of the portable videotape recorder and the self-evaluation instrument. Findings of the study (based on statistical analysis of data provided by 188 videotapes rated by three trained raters and suggesting a variety of areas in need of further research) are presented and analyzed in terms of differences in questioning behavior which resulted from the various treatment combinations. Appended to the extensive report are such materials as a 96-item bibliography, evaluative and criterion instruments, and self-evaluation forms. (JES)

43NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19850011817: The Role Of Silver In Self-lubricating Coatings For Use At Extreme Temperatures

By

The advantages and disadvantages of elemental silver as a tribological material are discussed. It is demonstrated that the relatively high melting point of 961 deg C, softness, marked plasticity, and thermochemical stability of silver combine to make this metal useful in thin film solid lubricant coatings over a wide temperature range. Disadvantages of silver during sliding, except when used as a thin film, are shown to be gross ploughing due to plastic deformation under load with associated high friction and excessive transfer to counterface surfaces. This transfer generates an irregular surface topography with consequent undesirable changes in bearing clearance distribution. Research to overcome these disadvantages of element silver is described. A comparison is made of the tribological behavior of pure silver with that of silver formulated with other metals and high-temperature solid lubricants. The composite materials are prepared by co-depositing the powdered components with an airbrush followed by furnace heat treatment or by plasma-spraying. Composite coatings were formulated which are shown to be self-lubricating over repeated, temperature cycles from low temperature to about 900 deg C.

44Software-recorded And Self-reported Duration Of Computer Use In Relation To The Onset Of Severe Arm-wrist-hand Pain And Neck-shoulder Pain.

By

This article is from Occupational and Environmental Medicine , volume 68 . Abstract Objectives: In both science and media, the adverse effects of a long duration of computer use at work on musculoskeletal health have long been debated. Until recently, the duration of computer use was mainly measured by self-reports, and studies using more objective measures, such as software-recorded computer duration, were lacking. The objective of this study was to examine the association between duration of computer use at work, measured with software and self-reports, and the onset of severe arm–wrist–hand and neck–shoulder symptoms. Methods: A 2-year follow-up study was conducted between 2004 and 2006 among 1951 office workers in The Netherlands. Self-reported computer duration and other risk factors were collected at baseline and at 1-year follow-up. Computer use at work was recorded continuously with computer software for 1009 participants. Outcome questionnaires were obtained at baseline and every 3 months during follow-up. Cases were identified based on the transition within 3 months of no or minor symptoms to severe symptoms. Results: Self-reported duration of computer use was positively associated with the onset of both arm–wrist–hand (RR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1 to 3.1 for more than 4 h/day of total computer use at work) and neck–shoulder symptoms (RR 1.5, 95% CI 1.1 to 2.0 for more than 4 h/day of mouse use at work). The recorded duration of computer use did not show any statistically significant association with the outcomes. Conclusions: In the present study, no association was found between the software-recorded duration of computer use at work and the onset of severe arm–wrist–hand and neck–shoulder symptoms using an exposure window of 3 months. In contrast, a positive association was found between the self-reported duration of computer use at work and the onset of severe arm–wrist–hand and neck–shoulder symptoms. The different findings for recorded and self-reported computer duration could not be explained satisfactorily.

48DTIC ADA1032090: Use Of Self-Report Technology In The Development Of An Organizational Action-Research Program

By

The research examined the dimensional characteristics of several self-report techniques of potential value in a diagnostic questionnaire to be used in organizational effectiveness (OE) research and intervention. A survey questionnaire administered to 320 enlisted personnel stationed in West Germany contained items from the OE-derived Work Environment Questionnaire (WEQ) and a variety of criterion measures of satisfaction and motivation. Analysis of the responses showed that the organizational variables fell into nine broad categories, of which two--quality of life and supervision--were significantly related to measures of satisfaction and motivation. The supervision factor primarily applied to job-related factors such as effort, while the quality of life factor concerned non-job-related factors such as intention to reenlist.

49The Role Of Active And Passive Social Media Use In Depressive Symptoms, Loneliness, Self-Esteem, And Life Satisfaction Across Different Age Groups

By

In our study, we aim to examine the use of social media across different age groups. Specifically, we want to explore the effects of passive and active social media use on four variables: loneliness, depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, and self-esteem. We are particularly interested in identifying the expected differences between younger adults (18–35 years) and older adults (60+ years). Existing research on the effects of social media primarily focuses on college students and younger adults (Davila et al., 2012; Kabasakal, 2015; Lenhart et al., 2010; Lin et al., 2016; Pantic et al., 2012; Primack et al., 2017; Tandoc et al., 2015; Verduyn et al., 2017; Vogel et al., 2014; Weiser, 2002). While there are some studies that include adult participants aged 18 to 49 years (Escobar-Viera et al., 2018), there appears to be a lack of research directly comparing younger and older adults—particularly with regard to differences between active and passive social media use. In addition, much of the existing literature focuses primarily on the platform Facebook (Chou & Edge, 2011; de Vries & Kühne, 2015; Ellison et al., 2007; Gonzales & Hancock, 2011; Grieve et al., 2013; Kim & Lee, 2011; Krasnova et al., 2013; Lou et al., 2012; Song et al., 2014; Tandoc et al., 2015; Tromholt, 2016), rather than examining social media as a whole.

50The Use Of Art Techniques And Self Discovery In Healthy Adults.

By

It will be a qualitative study where we expect to recruit 6 participants by publishing posters in public places and online forums. They will experience two art techniques that have been favourably linked to self-discovery and wellbeing, which are spontaneous painting (EDPP) and stimulus painting (Silver drawing test). This study aims to discover what is the prefered technique and what is the criteria being used to select his preference among adults who want to achieve self- discovery. The importance of this study is that it has been demonstrated that knowing ourselves well can help us preserve or even enhance our psychological well-being, it is crucial to investigate the potential benefits that art techniques can have on achieving self-discovery . Lastly, given there is a lack of research about the application of these techniques in a group that has not had a mental health issue, we have selected healthy people as our study population.

1Life (Alexander Version)

By

Book's cover

"What is life?" we ask. "Just one darned thing after another," the cynic replies. Yes, a multiplicity of forces and interests, and each of them, even the disagreeable, may be of real help to us. It's good for a dog, says a shrewd philosopher, to be pestered with fleas; it keeps him from thinking too much about being a dog. - Summary by from the poem preface

3Glory in the Grey

By

It sometimes happens, when we are dispirited, that God's gracious gift of reviving comes to us along a very ordinary channel--in the form, perhaps, of some tonic, heartening passage found in reading, or the "morning face" and cheerful greeting of a friend. That is often all that we need--when our hurt is not serious-- to send us back with a new zest and courage to our tasks; and that is the sort of usefulness which is desired for this book.

It does not pretend to deal with the great themes or the great hours of the religious life, but only with some of its simple encouragements and ideals for everyday. There is a wide difference between the far-off flash of guidance which the sailor steers by in the darkness, and the humbler lights on board which he sees to do his work. Yet he needs them both. 4Constructive Conscious Control of the Individual

By

F. Matthias Alexander was an Australian actor, author and educator, who is best known as the inventor of Alexander Technique, a method for "unlearning" acquired habits of movement and posture that are harmful or suboptimal, and allowing natural, healthy patterns of body use to emerge in their place. Alexander Technique is now taught by specially trained instructors through in-person lessons around the world, and is particularly popular among musicians and other performance artists. In this 1923 book, considered by many to be his best, Alexander explains the principles of his technique and the theory behind it. It includes an introduction by the American philosopher and educator John Dewey, who studied the technique with Alexander. (Summary by Kazbek)

5Final Campaign: Marines in the Victory on Okinawa

By

Book's cover

The three-month-long battle of Okinawa covered a 700-mile arc from Formosa to Kyushu and involved a million combatants--Americans, Japanese, British, and native Okinawans. With a magnitude that rivaled the Normandy invasion the previous June, the battle of Okinawa was the biggest and costliest single operation of the Pacific War. For each of its 82 days of combat, the battle would claim an average of 3,000 lives from the antagonists and the unfortunate non-combatants.” (Joseph H. Alexander)

6Closing In: Marines in the Seizure of Iwo Jima

By

Book's cover

Sunday, 4 March 1945, marked the end of the second week of the U.S. invasion of Iwo Jima. By this point the assault elements of the 3d, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions were exhausted, their combat efficiency reduced to dangerously low levels. The thrilling sight of the American flag being raised by the 28th Marines on Mount Suribachi had occurred 10 days earlier, a lifetime on “Sulphur Island.” The landing forces of the V Amphibious Corps (VAC) had already sustained 13,000 casualties, including 3,000 dead. The “front lines” were a jagged serration across Iwo’s fat northern half, still in the middle of the main Japanese defenses. Ahead the going seemed all uphill against a well-disciplined, rarely visible enemy. But the battle was beginning to take its toll on the Japanese garrison as well. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi knew his 109th Division had inflicted heavy casualties on the attacking Marines, yet his own losses had been comparable. The American capture of the key hills in the main defense sector the day before deprived him of his invaluable artillery observation sites. His brilliant chief of artillery, Colonel Chosaku Kaido, lay dying. ...Kuribayashi moved his own command post from the central highlands to a large cave on the northwest coast. The usual blandishments from Imperial General Headquarters in Tokyo reached him by radio that afternoon, but Kuribayashi was in no mood for heroic rhetoric. “Send me air and naval support and I will hold the island,” he signalled. “Without them I cannot hold.” - Summary by Joseph H. Alexander

7Across the Reef: The Marine Assault of Tarawa

By

Book's cover

"Tarawa Atoll is 2085 miles southwest of Pearl Harbor and 540 miles southeast of Kwajalein in the Marshalls. Betio is the principal island in the atoll. The Japanese seized Tarawa from the British within the first three days after Pearl Harbor. In August 1943, to meet in secret with Major General Julian C. Smith and his principal staff officers, Vice Admiral Raymond A. Spruance flew to New Zealand from Pearl Harbor. Spruance told the Marines to prepare for an amphibious assault against Japanese positions in the Gilbert Islands in November. General Smith’s operations officer, Lieutenant Colonel David M. Shoup, studied the primitive chart of Betio and saw that the tiny island was surrounded by a barrier reef. Shoup asked Spruance if any of the Navy’s experimental, shallow-draft, plastic boats could be provided. 'Not available,' replied the admiral, 'expect only the usual wooden landing craft.' Shoup frowned. General Smith could sense that Shoup’s gifted mind was already formulating a plan. The results of that plan were momentous. The Tarawa operation became a tactical watershed: the first, large-scale test of American amphibious doctrine against a strongly fortified beachhead." - Summary by Joseph H Alexander

8Practical Sermons

By

The sermons contain what the author believes to be evangelical truth, in the exhibition of which, his aim has been to render the gospel perspicuous to persons of common understanding. He has, therefore, adopted a style as plain and simple as he could. The sermons are short, and on an average, may be read in fifteen or twenty minutes. And as this is probably the author's last literary work, it is his earnest desire and prayer, that it may be useful in promoting evangelical and experimental religion when his head shall lie beneath the clods of the valley! He invites other Christians to unite with him in this prayer, for the success of the volume now given to the Christian community.

There is nothing in these sermons which will be found offensive to the lovers of evangelical truth in other denominations. The author, in a long life, has found that real Christians agree much more perfectly in experimental religion, than they do in speculative points; and it is his belief, that a more intimate acquaintance among Christians of different denominations would have a happy tendency to unite them more closely in the bonds of brotherly love. May the time soon come when all the disciples of Christ shall form one great brotherhood under the name of Christians. - Summary by Archibald Alexander in the Preface

9History of the Israelitish Nation

By

The importance of the study of History as a branch of knowledge is universally admitted; and of all History, that contained in the Bible is the most ancient, the most authentic, and the most interesting. It gives us information of those events which we can learn no where else, and with which it is most necessary that we should be acquainted. - Summary by Archibald Alexander
