The aim of this study is to evaluate whether and which effects the robot’s social role in a human-robot learning context have on learning success, motivation and credibility. A research project examined the effectiveness of using personal tutors/counselors in distance education programs as a means of reducing student attrition. In the experiment, one person integrated the roles of different tutors in different subjects as well as the role of the student advisor in the ordinary distance education system. The main difference between the treatment of the experimental and control groups was that the experimental students communicated with one personal tutor who integrated administrative, teaching, and counseling functions, which are normally carried out by three separate individuals in Norway's distance education system. Students in the experimental group participated in 3 to 11 courses each. Eight months after enrollment, the experimental group had a higher completion rate than the control group. However, although the completion rate was higher in the experimental group, the proportion of active students was still comparable with that of the control group. The U.S. Army Research Institute sponsored the development of a computer-based, interactive video training system called the Armor Tactical Concepts Tutor (ARTACT). All students were tested on their knowledge of tactics both before and after training on ARTACT. At the posttest, students in the experimental group were also asked for their subjective impressions of ARTACT.

This paper drills deeper into the documented effects of the Cognitive Tutor Algebra I and ASSISTments intelligent tutoring systems by estimating their effects on specific problems. We start by describing a multilevel Rasch-type model that facilitates testing for differences in the effects between problems and precise problem-specific effect estimation without the need for multiple comparisons corrections. It is widely recognized that tutor dialogue moves can significantly influence learning outcomes, but the ways in which tutor moves, student affective response, and outcomes are related remains an open question. This paper presents an analysis of student affective response, as evidenced by multimodal data streams, immediately following tutor questions. The findings suggest that students' affect immediately following tutor questions is highly predictive of end-of-session self-reported engagement and frustration. Notably, facial action units which have been associated with emotional states such as embarrassment, disgust, and happiness appear to play important roles in students' expressions of frustration and engagement during learning. This line of investigation will aid in the development of a deeper understanding of the relationships between tutorial dialogue and student affect during learning. The purpose of this study was the determination of those peer teaching variables crucial for the older child's maximal satisfaction. Subjects were 48 fifth grade and 48 third grade children, each grade consisting of 24 males and 24 females. The failure of some subjects to participate in all experimental sessions necessitated the elimination of nine subject pairs, leaving 39 usable subject pairs. Each fifth grade subject was paired with a same-sex third grade subject. Subject pairs were randomly assigned to three conditions: a) evaluation-reward, b) evaluation-no reward, and c) no evaluation. All subject pairs met for five 1-hour tutoring sessions on reading skills. Planned comparisons of pre- and post-experimental data indicated that tutors in the evaluation-reward conditions were significantly less satisfied with tutoring than were tutors in the other two conditions. It was hypothesized that these results were due to the reluctance of the tutors to assume the dual responsibilities of both evaluating and rewarding their tutees. A 31-item bibliography is included. This preliminary report describes part of NKI-Skolen's planned contribution to a cooperative study on student non-start and early withdrawals in correspondence education, which was created by the Norwegian Association of Correspondence Schools. A project is explained which will examine the organization of the initial phases of a student's correspondence study by assigning students in an experimental group to personal tutors who will integrate the normally-separated administrative, teaching, and counseling tutor functions. A background section provides a research review on the drop-out problem in distance education, non-start and early withdrawals, and student reasons for discontinuation. Further experimental studies with special relevance to the research problems and procedures are briefly presented. Under experimental procedures, the tutors' role in the study is examined in detail. Finally, research design and procedures are explained, including the courses, student selection, questionnaire design and data collection, and a summary of the research problems. A five-page bibliography is included, as well as a questionnaire (in Norwegian) designed for both experimental and control groups, which contains items on correspondence study in general, the tutor's work, and counselling, to contrast their perceptions on different aspects of distance study. This booklet is one of a series of teacher-written curriculum publications launched by the Bay Area Writing Project, each focusing on a different aspect of the teaching of composition. The first part of the booklet describes a college writing center and the tutorial teaching that takes place in the center. The challenges of implementing the process approach in a real-life setting are explored through the eyes of a MA TESOL student. While working her 2nd semester as an individual tutor for a developmental writer, the author discovers unexpected interdependencies among tutor, student, classroom teacher, and curriculum designer. This article dissects that experience, reflecting on specific challenges to draw insight on the effectiveness of the process approach with L2 students and the pedagogical implications for a preservice teacher.

In the UK, teacher education often includes more formal sessions facilitated by a university-based tutor and placement-based learning supported by a school-based mentor. Recent English government policy seeks the expansion of school-led teacher education. This suggests a shift in emphasis from current practice. The relationship between centre and placement-based provision therefore comes into focus. Through the implementation of a "co-teaching model" and an interpretive theoretical perspective, this study seeks to explore how the practice of co-teaching supports students to make links between university and placement-based learning and how it can support continuing professional development for university and placement-based colleagues. The study also considers what preparation needs to take place in order for co-teaching to be successful. A critical review of literature provided a framework for conceptualising "co-teaching". Drawing on Parsloe and Leedham's (2009) coaching model and Neubert and Bratton's (1987) mentoring model, a cyclical model of "co-teaching" was developed. The model was evaluated through my intervention as a member of a student team on a week's school placement. Data was collected through a reflective diary, questionnaires and focus group discussion with school-based staff, the student team and questionnaires from the whole student group. Findings extrapolated from the research through analysis of experiences demonstrated that all involved in the process needed to have a shared understanding of co-teaching. Also, it was important for the tutor and students to have a shared experience where the relationship between the tutor and students was one of openness.

This manual for peer tutors on tutoring community college students was developed as part of the EASE (Equal Access for Students to Education and Experience) Project at seven community colleges in northeastern Minnesota. The manual provides a general overview of policies, benefits, and responsibilities related to peer tutoring. It then offers guidelines and procedures for accomplishing the task. The latter part of the manual deals with students with special needs such as physical disabilities and/or learning differences, followed by suggestions and strategies for tutoring special needs students. Individual sections address the following topics: the community college learning center, the peer tutor, benefits of being a peer tutor, roles of the tutor, improving interpersonal effectiveness, policies on sexual harassment, a code of ethics for tutors, 21 guidelines for peer tutoring, learning styles, time management, the questioning circle, teaching the writing process, graphic organizers, spelling, math, difficult tutoring situations, learning strategies, assistive technology, compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a quick reference guide to preferred terminology in speaking of people with disabilities, general suggestions for working with people who have disabilities, characteristics of various disabilities, notetaking, test accommodations, and recording of textbooks. A pilot tutor training project, the Student-Tutor Orientation (STO), was designed to meet the need for making whole-language concepts of reading and writing instruction accessible to tutors as well as students through hands-on experience and for establishing a collaborative tutoring relationship in which students share in decision making. Together, tutors and students at a literacy program in a large Northeastern city learned the new concepts and strategies such as the language experience method. Use of materials relating to student goals and interests was emphasized, with instruction on how to make difficult but interesting texts accessible through such strategies as student listening and duet reading. Writing was stressed from the beginning, using invented spelling if necessary. After a year's use, in which 11 STOs were given and 97 tutor-student pairs trained, the approach seems to be superior to the agency's former training methods in several respects. Retention of tutors after training and hours of service surpassed those of a comparable series of the Center for Literacy's training a year ago. Tutors expressed increased confidence, and tutors and students reported more goal-related materials used and more writing done. Staff members requested STOs for their areas, stating that they felt the STOs produced better tutoring. Students were enthusiastic about their progress and their gains in self-esteem. (Author/KC)
