2ERIC ED629189: The Relationship Between Cognitive Abilities And Bilingualism In Early L2 Acquisition: Individual And External Factors Human Language And Cognition Do Not Develop Independently Of Each Other But Are Intricately Intertwined In Various Ways. This Contribution Presents The Interplay Between Linguistic And Cognitive Abilities Of Learners At The Individual Level And Relates Them To The Level Of External Contextual Factors In Social And Educational Environments. In Empirical Research, It Is Important To Differentiate Between So-called Proximal And Distal External Factors: A Causal Effect On The Individual Learner Can Be Primarily Assumed Through The Direct Stimulation Of Proximal Factors, I.e., In Personal Interaction (Proximity Of Stimulation Approach, Kersten 2020, 2023). Therefore, External Factors Should Be Differentiated And Special Attention Should Be Given To The Proximal Factors As Direct Influencing Factors In Empirical Studies. This Contribution Begins With Some Terminological Clarifications. In The Following Section, The Connections Between Individual Linguistic And Cognitive Development Are Discussed Using Selected Variables In Both Directions (internal Perspective). Initially, Findings Regarding The Influence Of Multilingualism On Cognitive Abilities Are Examined, Followed By The Influence Of Cognitive Abilities On L2 Acquisition In The Reverse Direction. Finally, The Contribution Focuses On External Contextual Factors. Findings On Family Contextual Factors Such As Linguistic And Social Background Are Presented. Lastly, Educational Contextual Factors Are Explored, Particularly Discussing Whether And How Instructional Factors Can Contribute To Creating Conducive Conditions For Mutual Development In Both Domains, Cognition And Language, And Potentially Compensating For Disadvantaged Learner Groups (cf. Kersten 2019). Human language and cognition do not develop independently of each other but are intricately intertwined in various ways. 7The Development Of Adolescent Social Cognition.

By

This article is from Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences , volume 1167 . Abstract Adolescence has long been considered a turbulent time; beginning with large changes in hormonal levels and consequent bodily changes, as well as changes in behavior. Recently, neuroscience studies have contributed to this picture of turbulence. We now know that the brain undergoes profound transformation during the teenage years. This paper focuses on how the social brain—the network of brain regions involved in understanding other people and self-awareness—develops during adolescence.

11ERIC ED106991: Social Experience And The Development Of Social Cognition In Orthopedically Disabled And Non Disabled Children.

By

Evaluated were the cognitive and social development of 40 orthopedially handicapped children ages 6 to 12 years. Social development was measured by the Children's Social Relations Rating Scale, the Children's Social Relations Interview Schedule, and the Children's Role Taking Task. The Concrete Operations Tasks assessed cognitive ability. Data supported the hypotheses that Ss would enact the patient (dependent) role and the nondisabled control group woull enact the agent (independent) role. Only partial support was demonstrated for the hypothesis that the Ss' cognitive task scores would be significantly lower than the control group's scores. Analysis of the level of role taking indicated that the social restriction produced by an orthopedic handicap decreased with age. (CL)

12ERIC ED143963: Cognitive Development And The Cognition Of Horizontal And Vertical Social Structures.

By

It was hypothesized that children, like adults, cognize social groups by applying social schemata. Their facility with social schemata was predicted to be a function of their level of cognitive development. When children were asked to complete partial social structures, formal and concrete operational, but not preoperational children, readily generated perfect structures. Particularly with concrete operations children, it was observed that the predisposition toward closure was stronger for vertical than horizontal structures. These results were interpreted with reference to the theory and observations of Piaget (1950). Implications for the understanding of the actual social groups of children were discussed. (Author)
