In order to assess the effect of T-Group sensitivity training on teacher attitudes, 25 elementary and secondary school teachers were given the Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory (MTAI) both before and after a 10-week T-Group program. A control group of 16 teachers taking an inservice course in Iroquois Indian History was used. Results showed that the control group's test scores remained the same or decreased slightly, while the experimental group's scores increased five to 20 percentile points. The greatest increase was shown by secondary school teachers of academic subjects. It may possibly be inferred that the T-Group training caused the increase in scores, but further research must be done to determine whether this training causes any actual changes in the teacher's classroom behavior. One approach would be pre- and posttesting of student attitudes to the teacher undergoing T-Group sensitivity training. (Four pages of teacher comments on the T-Group experience are appended.) (RT)

This case study is presented as a model for a sensitivity training program planned at Michigan State University. The goals, procedures, and criteria for conducting a program are illustrated. Based on the assumption that empathy is the mainspring of impression formation, and that empathy and evaluation interact, the goal is accurate evaluation. This includes accuracy in the use of stereotypes and personality theories. The training focuses, from beginning to end, on individual persons, and permits the diagnosis of empathic, evaluative, and stereotype errors, both variable and constant, Evaluation, a constant element in training sessions, depends upon criterion instruments which are both brief and reliable. The model was developed for maximum adaptability. (KP)

This pilot study was designed to help teachers become more aware of their own behavior and its effect on the emotions and attitudes of their students. An inservice program was offered to 22 teachers, affecting approximately 540 children in eight elementary schools in Albany, New York. It was hypothesized that the impact of human relations training techniques--sensitivity training, feedback of classroom interactions, a combination of these two, and a series of lectures on new media to enhance student motivation--should show a trend toward a positive effect on pupil anxiety, peer relationships, self-concept, and attitudes toward school, as measured by pre- and posttests of anxiety and compulsivity, and observations of classroom operations. No significant changes or trends were noted. However, teacher assessments of the results of their experiences indicated some attempts to move in positive directions as defined by the study. Further research in this field is suggested, with more time spent on training and special attention given to the selection of measurement instruments. (Author/RT)

Sensitivity training is one type of experience-based learning in which participants work together in a small group over an extended period of time learning through analysis of their own experiences. The primary setting is the T Group (T for training) in which a staff member sets up an ambiguous situation which allows participants to choose the roles they will play while observing and reacting to the behavior of other members and in turn having an impact on them. The perceptions and reactions are the data for learning. T-Group theory emphasizes each participant's responsibility for his own learning, the staff person's role of facilitating examination and understanding, provision for detailed examination required to draw valid generalizations, creation of authentic interpersonal relationships which facilitate honest and direct communication, and the development of new skills in working with people. Goals of sensitivity training are to allow participants to gain a picture of the impact that they make on others and to facilitate the study of group dynamics and of larger organizational concepts such as status, influence, division of labor, and styles of managing conflict. Research on sensitivity training is rather scarce and often subject to serious methodological problems, but some generalizations can be supported. This study evaluated and measured the effectiveness and enduring effects of two training groups with respect to transmitting knowledge and affecting change. Control subjects and experimental subjects were used. Data was obtained from the Sixteen Factor Personality Questionnaire, the Gough-Sanford Rigidity Scale, and the IPAT 8 Parallel Form Anxiety Battery. It was concluded that the short-term training institutes had little measureable effect upon participants in terms of the goals of the training and that the study was limited by the weaknesses of the measuring instruments. There is a real need to experiment with and evaluate short-term training programs rather than taking the subjective ratings of participants and judges. (Author/EK)

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Baroreflex dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation, important hallmarks of hypertension, are attenuated by exercise training. In this study, we investigated the relationships and time-course changes of cardiovascular parameters, pro-inflammatory cytokines and pro-oxidant profiles within the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus of the spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Basal values and variability of arterial pressure and heart rate and baroreflex sensitivity were measured in trained (T, low-intensity treadmill training) and sedentary (S) SHR at weeks 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8. Paraventricular nucleus was used to determine reactive oxygen species (dihydroethidium oxidation products, HPLC), NADPH oxidase subunits and pro-inflammatory cytokines expression (Real time PCR), p38 MAPK and ERK1/2 expression (Western blotting), NF-κB content (electrophoretic mobility shift assay) and cytokines immunofluorescence. SHR-S vs. WKY-S (Wistar Kyoto rats as time control) showed increased mean arterial pressure (172±3 mmHg), pressure variability and heart rate (358±7 b/min), decreased baroreflex sensitivity and heart rate variability, increased p47phox and reactive oxygen species production, elevated NF-κB activity and increased TNF-α and IL-6 expression within the paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus. Two weeks of training reversed all hypothalamic changes, reduced ERK1/2 phosphorylation and normalized baroreflex sensitivity (4.04±0.31 vs. 2.31±0.19 b/min/mmHg in SHR-S). These responses were followed by increased vagal component of heart rate variability (1.9-fold) and resting bradycardia (−13%) at the 4th week, and, by reduced vasomotor component of pressure variability (−28%) and decreased mean arterial pressure (−7%) only at the 8th week of training. Our findings indicate that independent of the high pressure levels in SHR, training promptly restores baroreflex function by disrupting the positive feedback between high oxidative stress and increased pro-inflammatory cytokines secretion within the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. These early adaptive responses precede the occurrence of training-induced resting bradycardia and blood pressure fall.

The purpose of this study was to assess the value of a combination of evaluation-feedback procedures in achieving the objectives of a non-residential graduate-level course in sensitivity training. The three-credit course, involving T Groups of 12 students and a trainer, is a required course for all candidates for a master's degree in elementary education. The three instruments used before, during, and after the course (both to promote and to measure student learning and to combine self-report, self- and peer-group ratings) were: (1) Personal Relations Survey, which measures degrees of openness and feedback interpersonal situations; (2) Group Perception Questionnaire, which evaluates peer-group exchange of feedback in terms of encouraging, inhibiting, accepting, or rejecting responses; and (3) Rating Scale, which is based on ten criterion statements considered to be critical dimensions of T-Group learning. Data provided by the study (the collection and analysis of which is detailed in the report) indicated, among others, the following general changes in students who had completed the T-Group training program: (1) Students improved and did as well as trainers in evaluating critical dimensions of T-Group learning objectives. (2) Students relied less heavily on the cognitive dimension as the basis of their peer-group discriminations. (3) Students improved their skills as participant observers and became more effective in the use of process observations in group situations. (Author/JS)

Emphasis can then be placed on developing and refining those data that have the greatest influence on the model output The Army Training and Testing Area Carrying Capacity (ATTACC) program is a methodology for estimating training and testing land carrying capacity. The methodology is used to determine land rehabilitation and maintenance costs associated with land-based training and other uses. ATTACC is part of the Army's Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program. A sensitivity analysis of the ATTACC model was completed that included all input variables associated with the environmental, training load, and cost analysis components of the model. Tests of the ATTACC model identified the user-supplied parameters to which the model is most sensitive.

This thesis records the method, results, and recommendations stemming from a sensitivity analysis performed on the output of the Janus(A) combat simulation. The analysis was based on a previous National Training Center (NTC) force-on-force(MILES instrumented) battle that was qualified as a Janus(A) scenario by TRAC-Monterey. The method involved four modifications to the qualified scenario and the use of a factorial experimental design. The factorial design was used to determine the presence of relationships between the levels of four main effects (battle parameters) and two responses variables (Measures Of Performance). The thesis concluded that Janus(A) output can demonstrate a statistically significant sensitivity, and that Janus(A) sensitivity is a function of the chosen response variable and the levels of each main effect. Interactions among three of the four battle parameters were also statistically significant. It is recommended that examinations of sensitivity analyses of Janus(A) be continued and a post-NTC rotation training plan similar to the one described in the thesis be pursued.

First the tape was played through a band-pass filter so that the words were unintelligible, but most of the voice qualities were distinguishable. Following this, a tape without band-pass filtering and with a different item order was played. The subjects' tasks were to identify the emotional meaning expressed in each item on the tapes and to judge how "positive-negative" the affect of each item was on a seven step scale. Subjects in both groups significantly identified more vocally expressed meanings without band-pass filtering than with filtering. The experimental group showed a significant gain in terms of identifying negative emotional meanings with filtering. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that high-intensity strength training increases vagal cardiac control and cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity. Twenty-two subjects [age 22 (0.8) years] were assigned to either strength training (ST, n =12) or control (CON, n =10) groups. Subjects in the ST group trained each major muscle group 3 days per week for 8 weeks with three sets of 10 repetitions and 2-min rest periods. Resistance was increased progressively when possible. Subjects in the CON group were active recreationally but did not lift weights. Before and after training, resting arterial pressure was measured with an automated sphygmomanometer, and ECG, respiratory rate, and finger photoplethysmographic arterial pressures were recorded with subjects supine and breathing at a set rate (0.25 Hz) for 5 min. Data were analyzed in both time and frequency domains. Arterial baroreflex sensitivity was estimated with the sequence method and cross-spectral transfer function analysis of systolic pressures and R-R intervals. Training increased whole-body muscular strength and decreased arterial blood pressure at rest (the exercise and pressure data have been published elsewhere). R-R intervals and standard deviations, and R-R interval spectral power at the respiratory frequency were unaffected by training. Similarly, training did not affect respiratory or low-frequency systolic pressure spectral power or cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity. Although evidence sup- ports beneficial cardiovascular adaptations to resistance training, our results demonstrate that resistance training does not affect vagal cardiac control or cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity in young healthy subjects.

The relationship of 2 important variables -- group composition and time -- to the verbal behavior of sensitivity training groups, using 2 recently developed assessment procedures, is investigated. Sensitivity groups were composed according to the interpersonal skills of participants, as measured by a structured behavioral technique, the Group Assessment of Interpersonal Traits (GAIT). Group verbal behavior was assessed using the Group Interaction Profile (GRIP). Two hypotheses were tested on 66 college males and females: (1) sensitivity groups composed of members rated high on interpersonal skills will demonstrate more personal discussion than groups consisting of members rated low on these skills; and (2) group related discussion will increase as a function of time spent in sensitivity group sessions. The measurement instruments are briefly discussed and the results analyzed summarily. Both hypotheses were supported. (TL)

This bibliography is comprised of abstracts of 115 ERIC documents (reports, books, articles, and speeches) on human relations activities for the schools, including sensitivity training and self-image enhancement activities. Six sections cover (1) background material on human relations, (2) general material on the need for intergroup activities, (3) inservice human relations programs (including sensitivity training) for teachers, administrators, and counselors, (4) classroom activities promoting student human relations, (5) self-image enhancement activities, and (6) recent research on self-image development. The author explores the validity of sensitivity training for professional social work education with its inherent concern for the relation between experiential and theoretical learning. The various streams in the sensitivity training movement are surveyed and the laboratory concept identified as particularly relevant. A human relations laboratory, offered annually as a supplementary educational opportunity for professional social work students at Adelphi University, is described. A clear definition of goals is stressed, as well as careful planning which includes students. Initial, impressionistic evaluations by students are included. The author concludes that sensitivity training has much to offer for both teaching and practicing social work, and suggests further exploration of the use of the human relations laboratory for social work education. Charlotte Turner Smith (1749 – 1806) was an English poet and novelist. She initiated a revival of the English sonnet, helped establish the conventions of Gothic fiction, and wrote political novels of sensibility.<br /><br />It was in 1784, in debtor's prison with her husband Benjamin, that she wrote and published her first work, Elegiac Sonnets. The work achieved instant success, allowing Charlotte to pay for their release from prison. Smith's sonnets helped initiate a revival of the form and granted an aura of respectability to her later novels.<br /><br />Stuart Curran, the editor of Smith's poems, has written that Smith is "the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic". She helped shape the "patterns of thought and conventions of style" for the period. Romantic poet William Wordsworth was the most affected by her works. He said of Smith in the 1830s that she was "a lady to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered". By the second half of the nineteenth century, however, Smith was largely forgotten.
