Today's learners are looking to explore career options that allow them to change their communities and often the language used to communicate careers and skill-building falls short of connecting a career path with a learner's passion. Similarly, while employers are searching for ways to increase dedication and retention among employees while also building a robust talent pipeline, employers are challenged to connect the skills and knowledge gained in Career Technical Education (CTE) programs to their employment needs. "Contribution to Society: Exploring Purpose-Driven Framing for Career Pathways" builds the case for purpose-driven framing for career advising, shares the results from preliminary research into this type of framing and lays out both implications for different populations and future work needed to validate and implement this framing. To better understand "contribution to society" as a frame for CTE, Advance CTE commissioned focus groups of both CTE and non-CTE learners at different levels and conducted in-depth interviews with business professionals responsible for hiring across six industries. Advance CTE's preliminary research shows that: (1) Titles and descriptions of programs of study or industry sectors alone are insufficient for effective advising; (2) Employers often misunderstand titles and descriptions of CTE programs or pathways and that these descriptions of programs do not consistently align with descriptions of their work; and that (3) The most effective framing of a program of study--for both learners and employers--links a learner's contribution to society to their career goals. This resource was made possible through the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Additional appreciation goes to Edge Research for participant recruitment and focus groups and interview facilitation.

7ERIC ED508749: The Impact Of Language On Educational Access In South Africa. CREATE Pathways To Access. Research Monograph No. 24
By ERIC
The role of Medium of Instruction or Language of Learning and Teaching has not received sufficient attention as a factor denying meaningful access to education in South Africa. Yet the majority of under-performing learners are also children who learn in a language that is not their mother-tongue. This research aims to assess how recent language policies have changed the linguistic practices of schools and how this impacts on "meaningful" access (understood as learners' access to the curriculum and therefore broad content knowledge). Interviews and open discussions were conducted with principals, teachers and parents from various township schools located in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng to illustrate the problems. Two appendixes are included: (1) Location of interviews with school principals and staff; and (2) CREATE's Zones of Exclusion. (Contains 47 footnotes.)

9Language Learning And Professionalization In Higher Education: Pathways To Preparing Learners And Teachers In/for The 21st Century
By Béatrice Dupuy and Muriel Grosbois
In this volume, language learning and professionalization are explored by addressing the existing gap between pressing needs for enhanced soft skills in work environments wherein technology-mediated, multilingual communication is increasingly the norm, and current foreign language teaching and learning offerings in higher education. Considering theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical perspectives for preparing language learners and teachers in/for the 21st century, this volume’s eight chapters underscore that research findings should inform the design of learning experiences so that people’s communication needs in fast-changing work environments are met and the link between language education and professionalization, within a lifelong learning perspective, is sustained.

10ERIC ED481597: GED As Project: Pathways To Passing The GED. Volume 4: Language Arts, Writing.
By ERIC
This guide presents writing-focused learning projects and accompanying inquiry activities to help students pass the language arts/writing portion of the General Education Development(GED) Test 2002. The Introduction relates GED as project to the writing portion of the GED and explains how inquiry activities used Official GED Reading Practice Test questions as stimuli and can serve as models for teacher-designed activities. It introduces the template for writing inquiry activities, a series of steps and questions that fulfill the learner-centered thinking and process this guide proposes. Section 2, an introductory learning project that helps learners comprehend and internalize information about the GED, is entitled "GED Language Arts, Writing and You." The four inquiry activities are based on the template described in volume 1 of this series. The writing template is the basis for the inquiry activities found in the six learning projects: Writing the Rough Draft; Evaluating the Evaluation Standards and Your Essay; Revising for Clear Expression; Revising for Mechanics and Usage; Revising for Style; and Answering the Multiple-Choice Questions. (The template is a five-step inquiry process that consists of the following steps: identify the problem; become familiar with the problem; planning, assigning, and performing; sharing with others; and reflecting, extending, and evaluating.) Appendices include a scoring guide, sample essays, tips for improving peer review, frequently asked questions, and writing and teaching resources. (MO)
