1ERIC ED211601: Qualitative Analysis Of Test Item Attributes For Domain Referenced Content Validity Judgments. Studies In Measurement And Methodology, Work Unit 1: Design And Use Of Tests.

By

This paper presents the interim results of a set of studies undertaken to develop a much needed methodology for establishing content validity in domain-referenced achievement tests. The study results are presented in the context of the larger issue of the improvement of test design. School teachers, administrators and graduate students were trained in using the Item Review Scale (IRS), and then served as item raters. The IRS provides structure for judgments of congruence between items and domain specifications. Raters were given a domain specification (elementary level geology) and eight related items to be rated for validity in terms of match. The items were systematically flawed along one or more of the dimensions of the IRS. Results demonstrated high inter-rater reliability on each dimension and the instrument as a whole. (Author/GK)

2NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940032439: Optical Position Measurement For A Large Gap Magnetic Suspension System: Design And Performance Analysis

By

An optical measurement system (OMS) has been designed and tested for a large gap magnetic suspension system (LGMSS). The LGMSS will be used to study control laws for magnetic suspension systems for vibration isolation and pointing applications. The LGMSS features six degrees of freedom and consists of a planar array of electromagnets that levitate and position a cylindrical element containing a permanent magnet core. The OMS provides information on the location and orientation of the element to the LGMSS control system to stabilize suspension. The hardware design of this optical sensing system and the tracking algorithms are presented. The results of analyses and experiments are presented that define the accuracy limits of the optical sensing system and that quantify the errors in position estimation.

9DTIC ADA427802: Design Of A Non-Contact Vibration Measurement And Analysis System For Electronic Board Testing

By

Traditional vibration measurement methods involve placing accelerometers at discrete locations on a test object. In cases where the test specimen is small in mass, the addition of these measurement transducers can alter its dynamic behavior and lead to erroneous test data. In this thesis a Non-Contact Vibration Measurement and Analysis System has been designed, built, and tested for electronic board testing. Through a product design process, all feasible methods were considered and three optically based concepts were explored: holographic interferometry, area scaling, and displacement sensor grid. Through concept testing and analysis, the displacement sensor grid method was chosen for the design. The final system incorporates four laser displacement sensors with a vertical scrolling mechanism that attaches to the vibration table's side rails. This manual scanning system provides a quick, low cost method for capturing multiple points on the test object during vibration testing. The MATLAB based software package acquires the raw sensor output and processes it with a five step analysis program. With this software, an 8x4 grid of electronic board displacements were easily transformed into a movie showing the board displacing through its first mode. The system requires the sensors be positioned 1cm away from the test object with the sensors reading up to 1mm of movement. The sensors have a maximum sample rate of 7.8 kHz and can be used to measure the displacements of any surface type or material. The measurement grid resolution is 0.7 inches horizontally and 0.4 inches vertically. Testing showed that the system captured the natural frequency and peak displacement of the board's first mode within 1.5% accuracy and 0.7% accuracy respectively when compared with previous accelerometer grid testing. A hardware and software manual are included for reference at the end of this thesis along with a software CD.

The study aims to evaluate how distance social studies courses were conducted during the pandemic, in line with teachers' experiences. The semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 social studies teachers working in various provinces of Turkey in this study, which was carried out with interpretative phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods. The data were evaluated by the content analysis method. The results show that social studies teachers perceive distance education as a system that allows using different materials and tools, maintaining education, learning technology, and eliminating the need for time and place. On the other hand, teachers expressed some limitations of distance education arising from the lack of internet and technological tools. In addition, the results indicated teachers mostly used direct instruction and question-answer methods for teaching during the distance education period, EBA, Zoom, and some Web 2.0 tools as educational technologies, and tests and question-answer methods for measurement and evaluation. Finally, many problems, gathered under the titles of "technological-systemic", "communication-coordination", "student", "family, and "other" in the distance education process were emphasized. When examining the experiences, all problems are seen to be related to the internet connection, access to technological tools, and how families play a role in their children's education. In this context, compared with other studies in the literature, it is possible to say that teachers working in different branches also experienced similar problems during the distance education period. Therefore, innovative applications that can be developed will be beneficial for all branches.

11DTIC AD0751134: The Design And Analysis Of A Human Body Motion Measurement System

By

No adequate systems were found in a literature search that would permit direct measurement of human body segments' angular acceleration and muscle forces related to these accelerations which would allow application of analytic mechanics to the human motion problem. Therefore, a new system was designed and analyzed to provide accurate measurement of the body segments' motion directly by use of angular accelerometers. The basic elements of the system are the accelerometers, all electromyogram sensors, and a proportional bandwidth telemetry system that allows the human performer to move about freely. Verification of the system was accomplished by measurement of angular accelerations of the arm and leg links during kip-up maneuvers. Alignment of the accelerometers was achieved by an optical laser technique. The acceleration signals, stored on magnetic tape, were subsequently integrated to get rate and position in an inertial reference frame. These position data, obtained through integration, proved to be insufficiently accurate when compared with synchronized position data obtained from high speed motion picture film data. (Author)

15DTIC AD0404785: NOISE CONTROL FOR AIRCRAFT ENGINE TEST CELLS AND GROUND RUN-UP SUPPRESSORS. VOLUME 3: AN ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF MEASUREMENT PROCEDURES AND OF DESIGN DATA

By

The physical aspects of noise control in aircraft engine test cells and ground run-up suppressors are reported. The measurement procedures and the noise reduction data that form a technical basis for many of the techniques and ideas presented in the other volumes are analyzed. Errors arising from the measurement equipment, wide band frequency analysis, random variations of noise level in time and space, the use of artificial noise sources, variations in air flow conditions and different measurement procedures are investigated to obtain an objective measure of the reliability of data obtained from an AF sponsored program of acoustical evaluations of test cells and ground run-up suppressors. Data on impervious barriers and noise control components for air passages are analyzed. The performance of a single wall barrier can be reliably estimated, but the large noise reductions expected from double wall barriers are seldom ob tained because of flanking paths. The performance of noise control components for air passages was found to differ significantly from that predicted by theory (first order modes, long treatment).

19DTIC ADA223352: Analysis And Design Of Modifications For Improved Performance Of The AFIT Radar Cross Section Measurement Chamber

By

This research effort investigated improvements and characterization of the AFIT RCS measurement chamber. The two main areas of improvement included the support pedestal and antennas. Characterization included antenna and system performance as pertains to aliasing, noise floor and quiet zone definition. Support pedestal improvement involved consideration of the three primary types used; the suspension line support, foamed plastic columns, and ogive-shaped metal pylon. Antenna improvement included installing broad bandwidth, low side- lobe antennas. These were mounted so that they could be easily rotated for polarization selection, and so that they provided a good approximation to a backscatter angle of zero degrees without incurring high antenna coupling. System aliasing measurements and analysis was performed to ensure that the full bandwidth capacity of the antennas was achievable without causing alias error signals to enter the target zone. Noise floor data was taken to determine the degree of sensitivity improvement after modifications. Quiet zone characterization was designed to verify predictions and provide actual dimensions for measurement analysis. Additionally, the quiet zone measurements provided information as to the pedestal location relative to the focus of the antenna. Theses.

23ERIC ED213728: Results Of Pilot Studies: Effects Of Variations In Writing Task Stimuli On The Analysis Of Student Writing Performance. Studies In Measurement And Methodology. Work Unit 1: Design And Use Of Tests.

By

Three pilot studies--effects of writing prompt modality on writing performance; effect of topic familiarity; and effect of topic, sample and rater group membership on the stability of scoring criteria application--are used to identify the variability in student writing performance. A writing competency test aims to assess writing-specific skills and, in preparation for a study of the effects of writing prompt modality on essays written in two modes of discourse, this investigation identifies essay scoring criteria sensitive to probable effects of the different modalities. The following scoring criteria are identified: (1) Do the different writing modalities affect essay writing on Analytic Expository Scale subscales? Do differences occur on the General Impression, Organization, Support, and Total Score ratings? (2) Does prompt modality affect essay length? (3) Does prompt modality influence the number and types of facts included in the essay? and (4) Does prompt modality affect syntactic fluency? Since the final study examines eighth-grade writing performance, the pilot study examines the appropriateness of an analytic scoring rubric previously employed with high school and college level writing. Sample essay topics and rating formulas are also included. (CE)
