This chapter explores the foundational concepts of the number system, including natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational and irrational numbers. It covers the representation of numbers on the number line, properties of real numbers, and operations with these numbers. The chapter introduces decimal expansions of rational and irrational numbers, along with the process of locating square roots and understanding the hierarchy within the number system.

This chapter introduces the fundamental concepts of coordinate geometry, focusing on the Cartesian plane and the coordinate system. It explains how to plot points using ordered pairs (x, y) on the plane and the significance of the x-axis and y-axis. The chapter also covers the concept of the origin and the quadrants in the coordinate plane. Through practical examples and exercises, students learn to locate points, interpret coordinates.

This is a report of a Conference of State Supervisors of Mathematics held at the University of Virginia December 4-9, 1969. The long-range goal of the conference was "to stimulate replication of successful compensatory programs in mathematics for low achieving students." Forty-eight state supervisors representing 34 states and Puerto Rico participated. This report contains the purposes and procedures of the conference, the two papers presented, a brief description of the approach to training teachers of low achievers which was demonstrated at the conference, and a summary and analysis of each of the five model compensatory programs which were presented at the conference. This teacher resource manual has been developed to assist classroom teachers in implementing the Integrated Occupational Mathematics program for grades 8 and 9. The first chapter of this manual gives an introduction including resources and scope/sequence. The next two chapters describe the overviews and instructional strategies of the grade 8 and 9 themes. The themes developed at each grade level are classified as: managing your money; world of work; using math at home; and travel and recreation. The last chapter discusses generic strategies: (1) problem solving; (2) use of technology (including calculators and computers); (3) computational facility and estimation (dealing with the development of computational process, mental arithmetic skills, and estimation strategies); (4) using a math lab; and (5) evaluation. Resource materials are listed for each of the five topics. Lists 13 references. (YP)

This annotated bibliography identifies the English language resources endorsed by all Western Canadian Protocol (WCP) jurisdictions implementing The Common Curriculum Framework for K-12 Mathematics for Kindergarten to Grade 9 (Common Curriculum Framework). Resources in this annotated bibliography were selected through a collaborative review process, based on their high level of fidelity with the rationale, philosophy, mathematical processes, and outcomes of the Common Curriculum Framework. These resources underwent an intensive review and were found to be the most suitable of those submitted. The resources in this bibliography are organized by grade, then alphabetically by title. Resources that are suitable at more than one grade appear in each of the applicable grades, thus providing a comprehensive list of materials for each grade. Descriptions have been written for each resource. Where material is deemed to be particularly useful for students with special needs or for small populations, e.g., learning disabled or gifted, this information is included in the audience section of the annotation. An alphabetical title listing at the end of the bibliography indicates the designated grade(s) of each resource. (ASK)

In January 1989, a survey was conducted of a national sample of public and private two-year and community colleges regarding aspects of their science, mathematics, engineering, and technology programs. The survey requested information on the prevalence of course and program offerings, the number and educational level of faculty, use of part-time faculty, faculty teaching loads, and the opinions of division heads regarding hiring and programs. Of the 323 institutions surveyed, 295 provided usable responses for a 91% response rate. Study findings included the following: (1) the majority of colleges without basic science courses were private two-year schools; (2) 78% of the responding colleges offered calculus or courses having calculus as a prerequisite, 69% offered two-year science transfer programs, and 46% had pre-engineering transfer programs; (3) science, mathematics, and technology faculty constituted about 37% of the total full-time faculty and 23% of the total part-time faculty; (4) the average total contact hours (lecture and lab) per week for full-time faculty was 18.6 in science, 16.2 mathematics, and 19.0 in engineering and technology; (5) in 7 of the 11 science and technology subjects studied, a majority of division heads reported the their institutions did not have any full-time faculty openings in the last three years; (6) the most serious problem cited by division heads was inadequate preparation of students in high school; and (7) the aspect of science and mathematics programs rated most highly by division heads was transfer to four-year institutions. This NSF-sponsored conference on the teaching of mathematics at the junior high level involved mathematics teachers and teachers of the natural and social sciences. Papers written for the conference form the bulk of this report. Summaries of the papers and general discussions are organized into shorter reports to give some guidelines which could be useful to any group wishing to create curricular materials for junior high school mathematics or simply to get some ideas for direct application to the classroom. The topics of the report were: what mathematics junior high students do and do not know; new emphases in content; mathematics in geography, social science and biology; teaching strategies and styles; mathematics and language; and teaching training. Results for each CSAP are reported in tabular form according to four levels of student performance that have been defined by the State Board of Education. This manual describes the Mathematics Assessment Questionnaire (MAQ) and its development, provides relevant background from the research literature, describes approaches to the reporting and uses of the MAQ (including its use in instructional planning), and presents sample responses from students and classes. The MAQ provides teachers and students with a tool to understand aspects of constructing knowledge in mathematics classrooms for grades 7 through 9. The questionnaire is intended to survey students' thoughts and feelings about learning a particular aspect of mathematics--solving mathematical word problems. The MAQ provides additional, complementary information to that provided by teacher assessments or standardized tests of mathematical concepts and procedures. The MAQ contains 162 statements and can be completed by most students within 40 minutes. In the first of 2 sections of the questionnaire, students solve a non-routine word problem and respond to 20 statements about what they did while solving the problem. In the second section, students respond to statements grouped within three activity settings (participating in the class as a whole, working with other students, and doing homework), after which the students' cognitive processes within each of these settings are again assessed, and affective beliefs, motivation, and attributions are studied. Three data tables and 10 figures are included. Appendices include sample responses for the fall 1988 sample; preliminary results of teacher ratings of items; statement numbers, scale response numbers for indicators, and interpretation of diagnostic indicators for beliefs, motivations, and attribution categories; the questionnaire; and the hand tally form. This course is designed to teach the student to perform basic mathematics operations correctly. It consists of seven lessons and an examination as follows: Introduction to Arithmetic and Whole Numbers, Common Franctions, Decimals, Unit Conversion, Ratios and Proportions, Percentage, Powers and Roots, and the examination. The course uses the technique of programed instruction. (Author/KM)

This is a report of an advisory conference of a National Science Foundation project. The project was initiated to provide a guide to available instructional materials and resources for teachers who want to expand their knowledge of subject matter, teacher methods, or the interplay between mathematics and other disciplines. The main thrust of the project has been to develop materials for teachers of mathematically uninvolved students, with emphasis on performance levels equivalent to grades six through nine. The purpose of this conference was to receive reactions and recommendations from a broad spectrum of people, including directors and staff members of previous curriculum projects, supervisory level personnel from various cities, practicing teachers, mathematicians, scientists, and educators. Conference plans included five initial working groups on: content, applications, diagnosis and evaluation, didactics, and teacher utilization. This report includes an initial position paper on each topic, along with subsequent recommendations. Also included are recommendations made by secondary working groups established during the conference on the topics: organization and staffing policy, format and style, problem solving, calculators, and computers. The most striking characteristic of technological as of other forms of education in the United States from the international standpoint is doubtless its extreme range of variation and the impossibility of framing general statements and definitions which shall be free from numerous exceptions. For the purposes of the present report a technological school or department may he defined as one giving systematic instruction in engineering and other forms of applied science to students entering the institution at the average age of 18 or 19, usually on the completion of a high-school course four years in length. The technological instruction aims to qualify its graduates both for immediate usefulness in junior positions in the various branches of engineering, in technical chemistry, in architecture, and for ultimate professional responsibility proportionate to individual capacity, etc. There is danger that in a university the balance may not always be evenly held between the interests of the academic and the technological students, or there maybe an excess of emphasis on abstract science, or the professional spirit of the technological student may suffer impairment from the distractions of academic athletics, etc. An interesting review of present conditions, and particularly of current criticism of the teaching of mathematics to students of engineering, may be found in the reports of the joint meeting of the section on mathematics and on mechanical science and engineering of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Chicago section of the American Mathematical Society. The object of that 1908 report was to present a synopsis of those fundamental principles and methods of mathematics that should constitute the minimum mathematical equipment of the student of engineering. The United States Commissioner of Education, in December, 1909, issued a detailed questionnaire on the teaching of mathematics to a large number of representative colleges of liberal arts and universities. Topics addressed in this questionnaire included: (1) General information; (2) Organization; (3) Curriculum; (4) Aims and methods of teaching--examinations; and (5) Preparation of teachers. Analytic Geometry and Calculus

This module is the ninth in a series of 12 learning modules designed to teach occupational mathematics. Blocks of informative material and rules are followed by examples and practice problems. The solutions to the practice problems are found at the end of the module. Specific topics covered include measurement conversions, the English system of weights and measures, and the metric system.
