Understanding how individuals interact with a course after receiving a passing grade could have important implications for course design. If individuals become disengaged after passing a class, then this may raise questions about optimal ordering of content, course difficulty, and grade transparency. Using a person-fixed effects model, we analyze how individuals who obtained passing grades subsequently behaved within a course. These learners were less likely to complete videos and more likely to watch videos faster after receiving notice of a passing grade in the class. Vermont is working to reform its educational system, and, according to some assessments, improvements are being made. On average, Vermont's students write reasonably well and fourth graders perform better than national averages in mathematics on selected questions from the National Assessment of Education Performance. However, many students also suffer from poverty, hunger, and abuse that hinders their school performance. Vermont has four goals for improving its educational system. First, every child must become a competent, caring, productive, responsible individual and citizen who is committed to continued lifelong learning. Lack of preparedness to enter school, poverty, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, and poor student health and well-being are obstacles to accomplishing this goal. Second, schools will be restructured to support very high performance for all students. Special-education programs and math, science, and technology education are to be improved. Third, the state will recruit and support the nation's most effective teachers and school leaders. New professional development opportunities will be offered, and teacher assessment and salaries will also be reviewed. Many medical decisions are complex and difficult especially when the decision is emotive, involves risk, is time pressured, and/or when the decision is ‘preference sensitive’, and there is no single best medical treatment option available (Winterbottom, Bekker, Conner & Mooney, 2008). Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant cancers among women. Some are the result of an inherited predisposition. Women born with mutations in the BRCA1 genes, for example, are at significantly higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer than are women in the general population (King, Marks & Mandell, 2003). Despite advances in the genetics of familial breast, the clinical management of women with established mutations remains controversial. Surgical prophylaxis in BRCA mutation carriers seems to offer higher protection against cancer than conservative approach, but it is associated with a series of limitations and risks. Clinicians are increasingly being asked to involve patients in decisions that ‘have no clear best choice, and in which the medical science is imperfect, leaving many questions unanswered (Roukos, Agnanti, Paraskevaidis & Kappas, 2002). In the current project we aim to investigate how including narratives of patient experiences impacts decisions regarding preventive treatments after a positive genetic test for BRCA1 in a hypothetical decision scenario in younger and older adults. Including narratives in health-care interventions is increasingly popular (Winterbottom, Bekker, Conner & Mooney, 2008). Research indicates that a significant proportion of patients perceive another patient’s experience as is important for their decision, helping them understand their illness, cope and adjust to treatment regimens, and navigate various healthcare systems (Bekker et al., 2013). However, some evidence was provided suggesting narrative information may affect decision making by encouraging the use of underutilization heuristics, where individuals are inclined to rely more heavily on information presented from an individual’s point of view than from statistics that are representative of a larger population (Fagerlin et al., 2005, Study 2). Accordingly, participants may also consider patient testimonials more strongly than statistics regarding risks and recovery chances when decision about preventive measures options after a positive BRCA1 test. How patient narratives influence decision making may also change with age. Several lines of research suggest age-related declines in controlled cognitive processes (Peters, Hess, Västfjäll, & Auman, 2007). First, because older adults process information less quickly than younger adults, their deliberative abilities may suffer due to less efficient processing of information. In this vein, research suggests that, compared with younger adults, older adults are less consciously aware of factors that influence their judgments and decisions, less accurate in estimating absolute numeric frequencies, more overconfident in their judgments, and that they are less able than younger adults to control the impact of automatic processing on their judgments (Peters, Hess, Västfjäll, & Auman, 2007). In addition, recent empirical work has shown that aging is associated with an increase in attention to emotional content (Peters, Hess, Västfjäll, & Auman, 2007). This suggests that older adults may pay even stronger attention to often emotional testimonials of other patients. We investigate these research questions by using a design asking participants to choose between two preventive treatments for breast cancer, i.e. breast surveillance program or double mastectomy, in a hypothetical scenario, varying the information they receive. Every group will receive the same preliminary information about both treatments and the same medical decision scenario. The first group receives only hypothetical statistical information about the risk of developing breast cancer in each treatment. The second group, in addition to the statistics, receives two positive and one negative testimonials of hypothetical patients who underwent double mastectomy. The third group in addition to the statistics, receives two negative and one positive testimonial of hypothetical patients who underwent double mastectomy.

This research seeks to understand whether and why cancer genetic counselors discuss lifestyle behavior changes with their patients for cancer prevention.

Hypotheses generated from organization theory stated that if the primary responsibilities in decision making shifted in either direction between faculty and administrators, there would be a resultant change in their organizational environment. In this paper six community colleges were analyzed for change in organizational structure after the institution had been subjected to external forces resulting from the onset of collective negotiations. Representatives from the administration and the faculty (union activists, union members, and anti- or non-union members) responded to a pretested interview schedule. This resulted in data being developed for four bureaucratic indices on 15 items relating to academic matters and faculty welfare. The findings revealed a democratizing of the organization and, at the same time, a formalizing of the bureaucracy. However, few changes occurred in the academic area after negotiations were concluded, although many gains were realized with regard to faculty welfare. Statistical analysis of the data revealed significant differences in many areas and thus it was concluded that the underlying hopotheses were generally confirmed. (Author/AL)

Efforts have been made by the Cornell University Libraries (New York) reference staff to assist students with their library research for a popular undergraduate course in human sexuality. Librarians have found the course to be a serious problem for both their reference and stack collections as most students do not understand research strategy, tend to leave their assignment (a short research paper) until the last minute, and are nearly all looking for the same materials at the same time. In 1981, the second year the course was offered, a voluntary library session was offered. By 1985, approximately 10 mandatory library sessions were included. In 1987, the library was awarded a $10,000 grant which enabled the reference staff to focus on improving the library-course connection. The major changes were the assignment of a critical, annotated bibliography on the research topic rather than a short research paper, and an earlier due date for the assignment. Student reactions to the assignment were positive, grades for the class improved over previous semesters, and librarians reported few problems with student research. (MES)

Many come from premise that that change occurs as “unfreeze-move-refreeze”, misattributed to Kurt Lewin. A more reflective view of systems changes not only sees distinctions between the intended and emergent recognized by Henry Mintzberg, but also an ecological epistemology. That leads to an appreciation of living systems in a temporality of the landscape as described by Tim Ingold extending the tradition of Gregory Bateson. Beyond the metaphysics of Heraclitus and Parmenides, the sciences of systems can be extended through a philosophy of science underpinning Classical Chinese Medicine. The ontology of contextual-dyadic thinking outlined by Keekok Lee is in contrast to the Western dualistic thinking. For novices, the central concepts in the Systems Changes Learning approach are: (i) rhythmic shifts; (ii) texture; and (iii) propensity. Practices are depicted as a hub of “knowing from within”, and four axes of (i) recognizing contextural influences; (ii) diagnosing rhythmic disorders; (iii) prognosing likelihoods; and (iv) reordering pacing. In workshops, metaphors of (i) sun waxing and waning; (ii) musicians weaving into an ensemble; and (iii) motions riding a surfboard, have effectively reframed thinking about systems changes. Providing a workbook with guiding questions has aided self-organizing groups to surface their points of view and engage in rich discussion, with a minimal coaching by facilitators. Ongoing action learning on doing (praxis), thinking (episteme) and making (poiesis) by the Systems Changes Learning Circle is in year 4 of an espoused ten-year journey.

Dr. Mike Bechtle wants to help people communicate better, especially in our social media world where everybody is talking all at once and nobody is listening. On Day 2, Mike describes the power of our words – how casual words often have more impact than we realize. He also describes the power of silence in a conversation – giving us time and space to collect our thoughts and communicate more intentionally. He explains why “outcome-based” conversations are much more effective – what is our goal before we start a conversation? He points to how Jesus modeled good communication in asking good questions; again, asking questions gives us time to think rather than feeling the pressure to propel a conversation. Mike concludes with some thoughts about how humility can improve communication, and shares a story about learning from our elders about better ways to communicate. The digital revolution is upon us, bringing with it disruptive forces in every aspect of business and personal interactions. The business marketing function has become so technologically driven it is sometimes hard to tell where the boundaries between the Marketing and Information Systems disciplines lie. The new world of digital marketing has changed how both marketing and technology professionals approach their jobs. Digital has created new roles, and much of what we knew and taught in higher education is no longer viable. New hybrid education programs are required to equip the new generation of workers with the skills they need to be successful. While marketing and information systems and technology education programs will undoubtedly continue to exist as separate entities, there are opportunities for cross pollination between the two disciplines. Just as corporate enterprises will need to embrace this new way of doing business if they are to be successful, so too will academic enterprises need to incorporate new methods and new ideas into their offerings if they are to remain competitive with their peer institutions. This paper explores the concept of how this new digital world has transformed the marketing function, the impact it has on the consumerization of information technology, and how higher education will have to respond. Digital has arrived, and it is here to stay.

This textbook/workbook for secondary school students is designed to stimulate inventive problem solving of future world problems. It is organized into four units and contains 23 lessons. Unit I defines the nature of the course and provides methods for stating and defining problems, brainstorming, working in groups, and judging ideas. Unit II discusses methods for forecasting the future and determining accelerating trends, and food crisis solutions. Unit III focuses on analogies as a means to problem solving. Unit IV presents a "Future Wheel", which is a method of looking for possible consequences and needs that might result from an event or development. Each lesson lists objectives, contains numerous illustrations, and is activity oriented. Students learn to construct checklists and matrices for problem solving. Activities include finding solutions to school vandalism; controlling forest fires; designing uses for old airplanes, warships, and mattresses; and designing solar and underground housing units and a special windmill to meet the needs of a farm family. The final lessons focus on a class-wide activity, Project Vista, a planned community for which students design housing and sit on committees for the environment, education, work, and health and welfare. Educators in intentionally small schools in Chicago are working to create a climate that is inviting, engaging, and challenging to some of the most academically disadvantaged students. Over a period of 18 months, data were collected from eight intentionally small schools that included elementary, middle, and high schools; freestanding schools; schools within schools; schools on probation; and schools that predominately enrolled poor and working-class African American and Latino students. Findings from 76 interviews with administrators and staff, 36 focus groups with staff and students, and 137 observations in schools highlighted the importance of professional community, collegial trust, and collaborative work in creating a schoolwide climate for effective education. Factors that contributed to this were philosophical coherence among faculty, a sense of collective responsibility for student welfare, public accountability, shared leadership, teacher collaboration, and a balance between academic concerns and student care. Participation in strong professional communities enabled these practitioners to create engaging and challenging learning experiences for students, who under other circumstances, might have been ignored, poorly educated, or left behind. Instead of relying on the student deficit model to excuse poor teaching and learning, they looked to themselves and their colleagues to improve the process. Some concerns that were identified included teacher burnout, staff fragility, and unfamiliarity with consensus decision making. Teachers in schools within schools often found it difficult to divide their time between their small school and host school. Data from a systemwide study of small high schools suggest some ways that strong professional communities promote student achievement and other positive student outcomes. The context for education policy making has changed dramatically in recent years. Policymaking at the state-level has become characterized by near-unprecedented enactment of neo-liberal education policies, increased influence of so-called Education Reform Advocacy Organizations (ERAOs) and increased challenges to unions' political influence. In this article, I explore the news media's characterization of power and political influence in this new policy making arena. I offer case study analysis of a Massachusetts law, passed in the summer of 2012 with support from a nonprofit advocacy group called Stand for Children, that limits seniority-based tenure for public school teachers. I use Critical Discourse Analysis to explore how themes, or discourses, common to this new context of policy making played out in the media coverage of the law, and I identify and characterize differences between media coverage of the law and the historical account as told in stakeholder interviews with major players involved in policy debate and development. Ultimately, I suggest that differences between media and interview data can tell us a lot about power and political influence in a time of dramatic policy change.
