1#123 - Co-Occurring Conditions & Crisis Intervention

By

Recognizing that a new diagnosis or co occurring condition exists in addition to an already existing autism diagnosis can be tricky. Our guest is one of few doctors in the country specializing in identifying and treating cooccurring conditions in autistic patients. She shares insight on identifying and treating cooccruing conditions as well as advice for parents should things escalate to a crisis situation. About the Guest: Dr. Robin Gabriels, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Gabriels has over 30 years' experience developing intervention programs along with assessing and treating a variety of pediatric and adult populations. Dr. Gabriels established the Neuropsychiatric Special Care program at Children's Hospital Colorado, one of the few nationally-recognized specialized psychiatric inpatient and day treatment units for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or intellectual disabilities. Dr. Gabriels' research efforts have focused on the ASD population for the past 22 years and for the past 12 years, her research has focused on evaluating the effects of human-animal interactions (HAI) on youth with ASD. Dr. Gabriels conducted the first large-scale NIH-funded randomized controlled trial of Therapeutic Horseback Riding on Children and Adolescents with Autism. In Jan 2020, Dr. Gabriels received a follow-up grant from the Eunice Kennedy Schriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development of the NIH to evaluate the physiological mechanisms of action relating to the immediate and long-term effects of therapeutic riding in children with ASD and co-existing psychiatric diagnoses. Dr. Gabriels is a certified trainer for the \"gold standard\" ASD diagnostic tool, the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule). She has written articles and book chapters in the fields of autism, asthma, and art therapy, and has lectured and conducted workshops on ASD, both nationally and internationally. She has published two edited books, Autism: From Research to Individualized Practice, (2002) Jessica Kingsley Publishers and Growing Up with Autism:Working with School-Age Children and Adolescents (2007) Guilford Press. 4Helping The Helpers: Evaluating A Gratitude Intervention For Police Dispatchers And Crime Scene Technicians

By

The purpose of this project is to evaluate a psychological program for increasing indicators of wellbeing in a group of police dispatchers and crime scene technicians. The study aims specifically to evaluate a gratitude-based intervention program. Increasing perceptions of gratitude has shown promise in alleviating the many threats faced by the population of interest. The construct of gratitude has been linked to a number of benefits that buffer against the occupational hazards associated with emergency support work. Such associations are promising for potentially offsetting workers’ heightened risk for negative outlook, pessimism, and burnout. This project also aims to investigate the moderating factors that may inhibit the potential salubrious effects of a gratitude intervention that are specific to this population including personality trait variables, professional experience, and shift scheduling.

9Investigating The Impact Of A Values-based Micro-intervention For Social Media Engagement.

By

Social media (SM) has become a relatively ubiquitous part of our everyday lives. Adolescents and emerging adults are the heaviest users of SM, with 95% of adolescents aged 13-17 using smartphones and 85% using at least one SM platform. 96% of emerging adults (aged 18-29) report that they have a smartphone and 90% use at least one SM platform (Perrin, 2015). Additionally, a national survey found that almost half of adolescents (45%) report being online “almost constantly” and another 44% reporting they are online “several times a day” (Anderson et al., 2018). Given that SM use (SMU) has become a pervasive and growing part of young people’s lives researchers have focused on the effects of SMU on adolescents and emerging adults’ well-being and mental health. Studies have found a complicated association between SMU and psychosocial functioning (Baker & Algorta, 2016; Davila et al., 2012). Some studies have found that greater SMU is associated with greater depressive symptoms, worse well-being and lower subjective quality of life (Donnelly & Kuss, 2016; Mieczkowski et al., 2020; Shensa et al., 2017), as well as lower levels of self-esteem, increased anxiety and poor sleep (Andreassen et al., 2016.; Scott & Woods, 2019). However, other studies have reported positive outcomes linked with greater SMU, such as reduced loneliness, increased life satisfaction and improved well-being (Pittman & Reich, 2016; Valenzuela et al., 2009). This has led researchers to start a more nuanced discussion about the relationship between SMU and psychological well-being, particularly, how specific online behaviours may be differentially related to outcomes (Steele et al., 2020). One of the key areas of research to date is the relationship between passive and active SMU and well-being (Escobar-Viera et al., 2018). Active use is defined as SM engagement in which content is produced or shared (e.g. commenting on others’ pages or uploading a story). Active engagement may also be interactive (e.g. having a conversation with a friend) or non-interactive (e.g. uploading a photo to one’s own profile page). Passive use is defined as consuming content rather than producing it (e.g. browsing SM pages). Whilst passive SMU has been linked to poorer well-being in adolescents, including higher levels of depressed mood and anxiety (Frison et al., 2016, 2017; Thorisdottir et al., 2019), active SMU has been linked to better well-being, including feeling closer to others, reduced loneliness, greater positive emotions and higher self-esteem (Subrahmanyam et al., 2020). Studies have suggested that SM can also act as a means to social support (Baker et al., 2018; Li et al., 2021; Ranney & Troop-Gordon, 2012). For example, one study found that more social interactions on Facebook and faster reactions from friends to a user’s posts were associated with greater perceived social support and reduced loneliness (Seo et al., 2016). These findings therefore suggest that active engagement with SM may facilitate access to some of the technology’s documented benefits. However, researchers have gone beyond thinking that it is purely engaging in SM in an active or passive way that is important. Thus, there is growing interest with respect to the content of what is being actively/passively engaged with. For example, experimental studies have found that participants who (passively) browsed their own page or non-social content did not experience negative consequences on their mood or self-esteem; in fact, for some, it increased self-esteem (Chen et al., 2020; Gonzales & Hancock, 2011; Toma, 2013). Therefore, it is not necessarily just passive browsing that is related to negative outcomes of SMU; instead, passive browsing of particular content may also be relevant (Yang et al., 2021). Based on a review of the literature Yang et al. (2021) developed the Multidimensional Model of Social Media Use (MMSMU), with the aim of providing a framework to understand young people's SMU in relation to their psychological well-being. The model highlights the importance of three major dimensions in SMU: (i) activities performed on SM, (ii) motives for SMU, and (iii) communication partners connected through SM. They suggested that interactive (active) engagement is key for positive well-being in young people, and they suggest that further studies should design interventions that explore the effects of interactive use of SM on positive affect further (Kross et al., 2021). Studies have also measured the effects of abstaining from SM and found mixed results. For example, participants who abstained from or limited their use of Facebook reported greater feelings of disconnection (Sheldon et al., 2011) but increased life satisfaction and mood (Hunt et al., 2018; Tromholt, 2016). However, a study by Stieger and Lewetz (2018) did not find an association between abstaining from Facebook and loneliness and well-being. Whilst such studies highlight the potential benefits of reducing or stopping SMU for a period, this is unlikely to be sustainable, and further, may entail a parallel loss of SM’s benefits (Best et al., 2014). Consequently, we propose that a more sustainable intervention (of real-world utility) may instead involve encouraging SM users to make active and purposeful changes to their patterns of SMU. One framework that can be used to guide decision making and promote meaningful behaviour change is values-based action (Scheier et al., 2006). Values are defined as ‘guiding principles that are ongoing reflections of what an individual finds meaningful’ (Reilley et al, 2019). Living in line with one’s values is strongly correlated with greater psychological well-being (Ciarrochi, Fisher, & Lane, 2011; Chauhan, 2016), increased social functioning (McCracken et al., 2015), and reduced mental health difficulties (Michelson et al., 2011; Gloster et al, 2017). Researchers have explored the potential to elicit positive behavioural change through targeting of values using ‘values-based interventions’. These are defined as interventions that focus on clarifying what a person finds meaningful, providing a framework for guiding decision-making, promoting meaningful and committed action, as well as long-term behaviour change (Scheier et al., 2006). The evidence suggests that such interventions are effective in supporting positive behaviour change and creating positive outcomes in both non-clinical (Thul‐Sigler et al., 2019) and clinical (Ciarrochi et al., 2011; Rahal & Gon, 2020) populations. We suggest that such a values-based approach may be a useful way to support emerging adults to harness the benefits and ameliorate the risks of SMU, by promoting active/interactive engagement with valued people, content and activities. ‘Micro-interventions’ are ultra-brief behavioural strategies that target specific, mechanistically important psychological processes that are implicated in symptom maintenance. Such abbreviated interventions can have immediate impact on the targeted symptoms/area for change (Ayers et al., 2015; Strauman et al., 2015). Past studies assessing the use of such ‘micro-interventions’ have found significant effects, both at the time of intervention (e.g. Beadman, 2015) and also at one-week follow up (e.g. Kamboj et al., 2017). Previous studies have used ultra-brief interventions to facilitate positive, values-based, behaviour change, e.g., increasing prosocial and decreasing selfish behaviour in couples (Gloster et al., 2020). Further, a study by Chase et al. (2013) found that online values training and goal setting in an undergraduate population sample significantly improved their Grade Point Averages (GPA) over the next semester, whilst goal setting alone had no effect (compared to wait list control). The present study aims to test the impact of a values-based ‘micro-intervention’ on emerging adults’ engagement with SM. We are specifically interested in the potential application of a brief, online intervention, as this has the potential to maximise participant engagement, and potentially, the reach of such an approach. The study draws on literature that highlights both the risks and benefits of SMU for wellbeing (Tibber & Silver, 2022) as well as the putative mechanisms at play in this relationship, including passive vs. active/interactive engagement. Specifically, the study aims to develop and preliminarily test, an online values-based micro-intervention for emerging adults and evaluate its immediate to sustained effects on a range of outcome variables, including values-consistent behaviour, positive SMU (defined below), affect, general well-being and social connectedness. Participants either complete a values-based, or matched control intervention, followed by naturalistic exposure to SM. Immediate and sustained effects of condition will be analysed across time-points (pre-, post-intervention and at follow-up) in relation to self-reported online behaviour and wellbeing. All procedures will be carried out online.

10Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Physical Activity And Pulse Pressure As Predictors Of Learning In A Multicomponent Intervention In Healthy Older Adults

By

In the proposed investigation we intend to investigate to what extent cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity can predict learning in a working memory training intervention in healthy older adults, when such working memory training is performed in isolation or in close temporal succession with aerobic exercise. Cardiorespiratory fitness refers to the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to skeletal muscles during sustained physical activity. It is best measured by maximal oxygen consumption, which reflects the greatest amount of oxygen uptake a subject can use in an incremental exercise test, determined by a plateau of values at a high exercise intensity (Ross et al., 2016). Cardiorespiratory fitness decreases with increasing age and is moderately related to self-reported and device-measured levels of physical activity (Jackson et al., 2009; Kulinski et al., 2014). Pulse pressure, which refers to the gradient from systolic to diastolic blood pressure and reflects stiffness of larger arteries, is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease and increases with age (Dart et al., 2001). The role of cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity and pulse pressure in physiological health is well-established, with low levels being associated with high risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality (Laukkanen et al., 2004; Blair et al., 1989; Domanski et al., 2002), and evidence is now emerging in support of beneficial effects also for brain and cognition (Barnes & Corkery, 2018; Chaddock et al., 2011; Cotman et al., 2007; Thorin-Trescases et al., 2018). About half of the variance in cardiorespiratory fitness and also in how it responds to physical exercise is considered to be attributable to heritable factors (Bouchard et al., 1998; Bouchard et al., 1985), leaving a sizeable portion of variance attributable to environmental factors. In aging, improving cardiovascular fitness with physical activity has been proposed as a promising preventative intervention that can help reverse or buffer age-related brain atrophy and cognitive decline (d’Arbeloff et al, 2020) Cross-sectional evidence supports an association between better cognition and greater cardiorespiratory fitness as well as higher level of physical activity (Freudenberger et al., 2016; Hayes et al., 2016; Zhu et al., 2018) and longitudinal studies have demonstrated an association between higher cardiorespiratory fitness and higher levels of physical activity, and reduced age-related cognitive decline as well as a reduced risk for dementia (Barnes et al., 2003; Wendell et al., 2013; Sofi et al., 2011; Pentikainen et al., 2019; Hörder et al., 2008; Nyberg et al., 2014; Hamer & Chida., 2009). Recent meta-analytic evidence of randomized controlled trials has supported a small but significant effect of regular physical exercise on cognition in older adults, across cognitive domains and training type (Ludyga et al., 2020; Northey et al., 2019; Falck et al., 2019). However, somewhat surprisingly, the presumed role of cardiorespiratory fitness for the effect of regular physical exercise interventions on cognition has yet to be demonstrated in a meta-analytical context (Young et al., 2015). Beyond regular physical exercise, several meta-analyses have concluded that a single session of physical exercise can acutely improve cognitive performance (Liprinzi et al., 2020; Roig et al., 2013; Liprinzi et al., 2020; but see Rathore et al., 2017), with some indication that individuals with high cardiovascular fitness may benefit more (Chang et al., 2012). The mechanisms underpinning the presumed effect of cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity on cognition is not well understood. It has been proposed that individuals with greater cardiorespiratory fitness may be better adapted to the physiological changes triggered by exercise and thereby receive greater benefits to cognition (Dinoff et al., 2017; Chang et al., 2012). Evidence in support of this can be found in the context of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is known to be essential for experience-dependent plasticity and learning from studies in rodents (Voss et al., 2013). In humans, BDNF has consistently been shown to increase acutely and transiently in peripheral blood following a single session of physical exercise (Kneapen et al., 2010; Szuhany et al., 2015; Dinoff et al., 2017), more so for individuals with high cardiorespiratory fitness (Dinoff et al., 2017). It has consequently been suggested that physical exercise prior to cognitive engagement would be optimal since this would allow the exercise-induced BDNF increase to directly coincide with cognitive engagement (Walsh & Tschakovsky, 2018; Chang et al., 2014), although such BDNF increases may also facilitate subsequent consolidation processes (Loprinzi et al., 2019). In regards to regular physical exercise, meta-analytic evidence suggest that regular aerobic exercise can increase resting concentrations of peripheral BDNF (Dinoff et al., 2016). In summary, individuals who are more physically active and have higher cardiorespiratory fitness may be better adapted to the physiological changes induced by exercise, allowing for improved cognitive capacity and learning. In the proposed investigation, we will investigate whether cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity and pulse pressure predict learning in a working memory training intervention, when it is performed in isolation and when it is performed in close temporal succession with aerobic exercise. The primary aim will be to test the hypotheses that higher cardiorespiratory fitness, a higher level of moderate-vigorous physical activity and lower pulse pressure are associated with improved working memory training outcome, particularly when working memory training is preceded by aerobic exercise (confirmatory analyses). We will also test the hypothesis that acute increases in BDNF following physical exercise partially mediates the hypothesized relationship between higher cardiorespiratory fitness and working memory training outcome (confirmatory analysis). A secondary aim will be to investigate how cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity and pulse pressure may interact with each other and with peripheral BDNF, at rest and following physical exercise, in predicting working memory outcome (exploratory analyses). Age, sex and BMI will be investigated as possible confounders in all hypothesized relationships (sensitivity analyses), with the exception of BMI for models that include cardiorespiratory fitness in relative units (mL/kg/min). The proposed investigation will be based on an already completed randomized-controlled intervention trial, in which healthy older participants received either aerobic exercise immediately before working memory training, aerobic exercise immediately after working memory training, aerobic training only, or working memory training only during a 12-week intervention period involving 30 intervention visits (Nilsson et al., 2020; pre-registration for original study available at 10.31219/osf.io/rkf5t). Contrary to our hypotheses, combining working memory training with aerobic exercise in close temporal succession, irrespective of order, did not result in greater cognitive improvements at the group level. However, we demonstrated that acute increases in peripheral BDNF following physical exercise were predictive of working memory training outcome, but only in the group that received physical exercise prior to cognitive training, suggesting that administration order may be of importance at an interindividual level (Nilsson et al., 2020). The proposed investigation will continue the search for interindividual factors that predict learning in a working memory training intervention when it is combined with aerobic training, focusing on cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity.

18A Social Norm Intervention To Reduce Catcalling

By

This project is a multi-condition experimental study comparing the efficacy of different social norm interventions to reduce catcalling. The pre-registration will be updated continuously, to reflect the new conditions that will be investigated. Initially, we will compare only a social norm (static + dynamic, descriptive + injunctive, peer + top-down) condition with a neutral control video.

19An Online Self-compassion Intervention For Individuals Living With A Skin Condition: Improvements In Positive And Negative Affect And The Role Of Perfectionism And Shame As Psychological Barriers.

By

We aim to identify whether self-compassion can be cultivated in people living with a skin condition to help improve their affect (Dalgard et al, 2015). The findings have scope to expand the current evidence-base to determine whether compassion-focused therapy should become a recommended treatment for the psychological distress of those living with a skin condition. We also aim to explore the role of shame and perfectionism as psychological barriers to reduce the impact of inducing self-compassion for those living with a skin condition. Shame and perfectionism have been identified as common features associated with living with a skin condition, and inversely associated with self-compassion in the general public (Hanstock & O’Mahony, 2002; Flett, Besser, Davis & Hewitt, 2003; Ferreira, Pinto-Gouveia & Duarte, 2013; Homayoon et al, 2020). It would be informative to identify those likely to benefit from this treatment approach and those where it may be redundant; helping to promote prudent healthcare.

23The Effect Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Different Facets Of Planetary Hearth, Environmental Behavior, Preferences For Social Equality And Job Preferences.

By

Mindfulness-based interventions have proven effective in enhancing the well-being of university students (Dawson et al., 2020). According to the planetary health concept, individual well-being is related to global well-being. Internal transformative qualities and intermediate factors are important for individual transformation, as they can influence the values of our relationship with ourselves and the world around us (Wamsler et al., 2021). These values can subsequently affect various important economic outcomes. Drawing insights from diverse scientific perspectives, this study aims to explore how an online mindfulness-based intervention influences not only the facets of planetary health but also environmental behavior, preferences for social equality, and preferences for job characteristics.

25Development Of A Family-centered Intervention To Support Self-determination In Adolescents And Young Adults With Intellectual Disability In Home Environments: Protocol For A Multistage Mixed Methods Design

By

Families play an important role in promoting the self-determination of children and adolescents with intellectual disability by providing learning opportunities and a supportive home environment. However, little is known about how families promote self-determination specifically in the home context, and no relevant interventions have been designed to date. The aim of this mixed methods study, based on Causal Agency Theory, is to illustrate how self-determination develops in the home environment in adolescents and young adults with intellectual disability in order to design an evidence-based, family-centered, intervention to promote their self-determination. Our study is based on a multistage mixed methods design in three sequential phases. Phase 1 will consist of a grounded theory based on qualitative interviews and photo elicitation, conducted with families of adolescents and young adults with intellectual disability; Phase 2 will involve participatory group concept mapping with adolescents and young adults with intellectual disability, along with their families, and professionals; and Phase 3 will be based on intervention mapping. The integration of the three phases will be performed through connecting, by inviting the participants in each phase to join in the subsequent phases; through building, by using the Phase 1 findings to generate the statements used in Phase 2; and by merging, synthesizing the findings from the earlier phases to develop an intervention in Phase 3. We will make use of joint displays for data collection and analysis, facilitating the integration of data across all the phases. This study will be an important first step in the effort to gain evidence-based, naturalistic insights into the ways in which self-determination is developed and supported in adolescents and young adults with intellectual disability in the home environment, delineating a number of intervention points that will need to be tested in future studies.

Libya plunged into deadly chaos after the overthrow and killing of its long-serving ruler Muammar Gaddafi following a bombing campaign by the US-led NATO military alliance in 2011. nThis intervention ignited clashes between rival militias backed by foreign powers that poured weapons and mercenaries into the country. nSince 2015, Libya has been divided between the UN-recognized government in Tripoli and parallel institutions in Tobruk, allied to renegade military commander General Khalifa Haftar. Attempts to hold an election that would unite the country have failed up until now. nThe country has experienced relative peace since a 2020 following truce between the main eastern and western sides. However, intermittent clashes between rival militia groups continue to threaten the country's future.nThis week, we are focussing on Libya, a once prosperous North African country that was destroyed during a disastrous NATO –led invasion in 2011. nThe second part of our program will be on the situation in Niger after the military takeover in the country last month.n.

30Military Intervention In Sub-Saharan Africa

By

The purpose of this thesis is to examine United States military intervention in the civil wars of sub-Saharan Africa. Because the United States does not have any strategic interests in the region, it becomes involved in African conflicts only when they reach extreme levels of violence and when states collapse. This level of violence generates a degree of international sympathy that puts pressure on the United States government to intervene military in the domestic policies and political arrangements of these countries in order to stop the violence and restore order. This thesis argues that the violence associated with civil conflict in Africa is part of the process of central state power accumulation a process which in Europe took place in the 17th and 18th centuries. By attempting to reestablish order and stability, the United States only disrupts and prevents the consolidation of state authority necessary for the emergence of national states and long term stability. The thesis concludes that international military intervention cannot solve the root cause of the instability and that, therefore, external actors should refrain from intervening in these situations

32Catastrophic Foreign Intervention In Haiti - Jafrikayiti (pt 1/2)

By

Following a disastrous UN mission in 2010, several Western-backed coups d'état, and the U.S. occupation of 1915-1934, the initiation of yet another foreign intervention in Haiti aligns with the longstanding imperial policy of the U.S., Canada, and European powers towards the country. Jafrikayiti, author and activist for Solidarité Québec-Haiti, underscores the broken social contract in Haiti, where installed leaders are neither elected by nor are accountable to the people but serve the interests of the private sector, over a dozen rich families, and the countries of the Core Group. 39ERIC ED512686: The Targeted Reading Intervention: A Classroom Teacher Professional Development Program To Promote Effective Teaching For Struggling Readers In Kindergarten And First Grade

By

The main objective of the overall Targeted Reading Intervention (TRI) was to help the classroom teacher acquire the key reading diagnostic strategies (e.g., Cooter, 2003; Desimone, 2009; Garet et al., 2001; Timperley & Phillips, 2003) relevant to K-1 struggling readers (e.g., Desimone, 2009; Garet et al., 2001; Guskey, 2002; Joyce & Showers, 2002; Penuel et al., 2007; Taylor, Pressley & Pearson, 2004) through the authors' professional development program. In the present study the authors employed an innovative distance technology model to deliver professional development and real-time collaborative coaching to isolated rural schools. Each experimental classroom received a laptop, webcam, and webconferencing software. This technology was used with each experimental teacher so that the authors could see and hear her working with each of her struggling readers in real time and she could see and hear the literacy consultants at their university thousands of miles away. Through this technology the literacy consultants could coach the classroom teacher in using the TRI strategies and also use the technology of grade level meetings and workshops throughout the year. Findings of this study suggests that the Targeted Reading Intervention, using webcam technology with classroom teachers in kindergarten and first grade, can significantly help struggling readers progress more quickly in all of the basic word reading and comprehension skills over one year. In addition, for the basic word reading skills, the TRI can actually help struggling readers catch up with their non-struggling peers in the same classroom by the end of the school year. Future work is needed to understand what actual teacher knowledge and practice constructs that might mediate the relationship between treatment and student outcomes. (Contains 1 figure and 3 tables.)

40ERIC ED611358: Xtreme Reading. Intervention Snapshot. Adolescent Literacy Topic Area. NCEE 2021-009

By

"Xtreme Reading" is a supplemental literacy curriculum designed to improve the literacy skills of struggling students in grades 6 to 12. The curriculum is primarily designed to help students improve their vocabulary, decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension skills. To ensure a productive learning environment, students initially learn social skills associated with creating a supportive learning community, including how to participate in certain class activities (for example, whole-group discussion, small-group work, partner work, transitions). They also participate in a motivational program whereby they discuss their hopes and dreams for the future and set personal goals related to reading and other life areas. The "Xtreme Reading" program includes teacher-led whole-group instruction, cooperative group work, paired practice, and independent practice. This What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) intervention report, part of the WWC's Adolescent Literacy topic area, explores the effects of "Xtreme Reading" on student literacy achievement and comprehension (including reading comprehension and vocabulary skills). The WWC identified four studies of "Xtreme Reading," two of which meet WWC standards. The evidence presented in this report is from studies of the effects of "Xtreme Reading" on ninth-grade students--including 81% non-White and 19% White students--from largely urban and diverse school districts. Findings on "Xtreme Reading" from the two studies that meet WWC standards are shown in this snapshot. [For the full report, see ED611355. For the Intervention Brief, see ED611356.]

42What Do Mothers Want: Perceptions Of Developmental Intervention Helpfulness

By

In the field of Developmental Psychology, much research has documented that economic disadvantage is associated with lower scores on many measures of child development, and translated these findings into parent- and child-focused interventions aimed at preventing income-related disparities in child outcomes. For theoretical and empirical reasons, many have called for this area of research to pivot towards more explicit use of strengths-based theory and an increased focus on structural, resource-focused interventions (e.g., direct cash transfers or resource provision, housing supports, etc.) instead of individual-focused ones (e.g., programs focused to improve parenting, knowledge of child development, etc.). Several research groups have argued that individual-focused interventions commonly presume that developmental disparities in child outcomes are the result of skill or knowledge deficits at the parent- or child-level, as opposed to underlying resource deficits (Adair et al., 2017; DeJoseph et al., 2023; Dudley-Marling & Lucas, 2009; Ellwood-Lowe et al., 2021; Kuchirko, 2019). To this point, interventions coming from Developmental Psychology commonly do not address these structural sources of resource deprivation, or change the conditions of living in poverty (Dudley-Marling & Lucas, 2009; Ellwood-Lowe et al., 2021) with a few notable exceptions (e.g., Baby’s First Years, Moving to Opportunity). Indeed, it is possible that interventions targeting structural sources of inequity directly may be more effective in the short-term and potentially overcome issues of fadeout in the long-term, which are pervasive across individual-focused interventions (Hart et al., 2023). As researchers engage in considerations around these shifts, the perspective of a critical informant is missing: mothers. Mothers with low income hold important perspective about the kinds of developmental interventions that may be helpful for families in similar circumstances to their own. Their insights could prove valuable in informing what kinds of interventions researchers chose to design and evaluate in light of the aforementioned concerns. Thus, this project aims to understand the intervention preferences of mothers with low income. It will document how helpful mothers anticipate various interventions would be in raising young children. The project will also investigate whether mothers’ endorsements corroborate the “individual” versus “structural” distinction present in the literature. To these ends, the project will test whether mothers generally endorse parent-directed, individual interventions as more or less helpful than resource-directed, structural interventions. Additionally, the project will test whether the dichotomy between individual- and structural-level interventions aligns with mothers’ endorsements of intervention helpfulness. Above all, the goal of the project is to document and share mothers’ perspectives on this topic, which will hopefully be generative for future research. The project is inherently descriptive and exploratory in nature. Thus, the goal of this pre-registration is to document the a priori motivation and research questions for this project. Since the work is exploratory, there are not explicit a priori hypotheses associated with these questions. The findings of this study will be interpreted with a descriptive lens and with the goal of providing a starting place for future studies, that may then pose confirmatory questions. At the time of this pre-registration submission, data collection is complete. No analyses or descriptive exploration of the data have been performed.

43ERIC ED243297: Antecedents Of Language Functioning In The Deaf: Implications For Early Intervention: Project Summary.

By

Graduates (N=54) of a program for profoundly hearing impaired infants and their families were assessed from 1 to 6 years after leaving the program to determine the longitudinal effectiveness of the early intervention. Effects of five variables (sex, parents' educational levels, birth order, parents' hearing status, and age of intervention) on the Ss' early language functioning were measured, and later functioning was examined through teacher rating scales combined with the results of naturalistic classroom observations. Findings of maternal language analysis revealed that the maternal language repertoire appeared to reflect the mother's emotional state which, in turn, exerted long-term effects on the children. Remediation suggestions were offered for each of five key predictive variables: hearing status of the parents, educational level of the parents, age of intervention, sex of child, and presence of siblings. Conclusions stressed the need for attention to family functioning. (CL)

45Neural Correlates Of A Visuospatial Intervention After Memory Reactivation In Healthy Subjects – A Pilot Resting-state FMRI Study

By

Pilot study to establish a new paradigm in healthy subjects. The aim of the study now planned is to establish a paradigm in healthy subjects that can examine possible changes in the connectivity of neuronal networks from before to after a memory reactivation and visuospatial task in comparison to a control condition. As an intervention, the subjects will be randomly assigned between the two MRI measurements to either the (clinically already established) intervention (writing down a stressful event and then playing Tetris for 25 minutes) or a control condition (reading a Wikipedia article about stamps and answering multiple-choice questions about it). The connectivity within resting networks measured with fMRI before the intervention will be compared with the connectivity after the intervention (with a focus on the changes that are specifically only seen in the intervention group, not in the control condition).

1Voyage Towards the South Pole and Round the World Volume 1

By

Book's cover

Having, on his first voyage, discovered Australia, Cook still had to contend with those who maintained that the Terra Australians Incognita (the unknown Southern Continent) was a reality. To finally settle the issue, the British Admiralty sent Cook out again into the vast Southern Ocean with two sailing ships totalling only about 800 tons. Listen as Cook, equipped with one of the first chronometers, pushes his small vessel not merely into the Roaring Forties or the Furious Fifties but becomes the first explorer to penetrate the Antarctic Circle, reaching an incredible Latitude 71 degrees South, just failing to discover Antarctica. 8First Voyage of James Cook Volume 1

    By

    Book's cover

In May 1768, the Admiralty commissioned the 39-year old Cook to command a scientific voyage to the Pacific Ocean to observe and record the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun. The expedition sailed aboard HMS Endeavour in August 1768, rounded Cape Horn and continued to Tahiti, where the observations of the transit were made. Cook then opened sealed orders for the second part of his voyage: to search the south Pacific for signs of the postulated rich southern continent of Terra Australis. Cook proceeded to circumnavigate New Zealand's two main islands, which is where this volume ends. - Summary by David Cole

9First Voyage of James Cook Volume 2

    By

    Book's cover

Following his discovery and circumnavigation of New Zealand recorded in Volume 1, Cook sailed westwards to Australia, whose east coast was at that time unknown. After initially sighting Port Hicks, Cook landed at Botany Bay, where he tried but failed to make contact with the native inhabitants. He proceeded northward, mapping about a thousand miles of coastline and discovering the Great Barrier Reef by severely damaging his ship in running into one of the reefs. The ship was in danger of sinking and limped to the mainland where, over a period of seven weeks, major repairs were made by the ship's crew. Cook then proceeded to Cape York, the northern tip of Australia and completed his circumnavigation of the globe via Batavia (modern Jakarta, Indonesia), the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. - Summary by David Cole

10Third Voyage of James Cook, Volume 1

    By

    Book's cover

Only months after his return from his mammoth Second Voyage, the Admiralty ordered Cook back to the Pacific, ostensibly to return Omai, a young man from Raiatea, to his homeland, but in fact to attempt the discovery of the Northwest Passage (a proposed route from the Pacific to the Atlantic north of Canada). Cook commanded HMS Resolution and was accompanied by Captain Clerke commanding HMS Discovery. After sailing to the Pacific via Tenerife, Cape Town and New Zealand, Omai was returned to his home, after which Cook became the first European to visit the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and then mapped the West Coast of North America. After many delays, he penetrated the Bering Strait, but was unable because of ice to proceed either East or West. He eventually returned to Hawaii, where Cook was killed by the natives. Following the death of Captain Clerke from tuberculosis, the ships eventually returned to Britain under the command of Captain Gore. This first volume covers only the portion of the voyage up to the first visit to Hawaii. - Summary by David Cole
