"An Online Self-compassion Intervention For Individuals Living With A Skin Condition: Improvements In Positive And Negative Affect And The Role Of Perfectionism And Shame As Psychological Barriers." Description:

The Internet Archive:

We aim to identify whether self-compassion can be cultivated in people living with a skin condition to help improve their affect (Dalgard et al, 2015). The findings have scope to expand the current evidence-base to determine whether compassion-focused therapy should become a recommended treatment for the psychological distress of those living with a skin condition. We also aim to explore the role of shame and perfectionism as psychological barriers to reduce the impact of inducing self-compassion for those living with a skin condition. Shame and perfectionism have been identified as common features associated with living with a skin condition, and inversely associated with self-compassion in the general public (Hanstock & O’Mahony, 2002; Flett, Besser, Davis & Hewitt, 2003; Ferreira, Pinto-Gouveia & Duarte, 2013; Homayoon et al, 2020). It would be informative to identify those likely to benefit from this treatment approach and those where it may be redundant; helping to promote prudent healthcare.
