2ERIC EJ1148396: Using The "Expert Performance Approach" As A Framework For Improving Understanding Of Expert Learning

By

The expert performance approach, initially proposed by Ericsson and Smith (1991), is reviewed as a systematic framework for the study of "expert" learning. The need to develop representative tasks to capture learning is discussed, as is the need to employ process-tracing measures during acquisition to examine what actually changes during learning. We recommend the use of realistic retention and transfer tests to infer what has been learned, so that the effects of various interventions on learning may be evaluated. A focus on individual differences in learning within groups of expert performers is considered as a way to identify the characteristics of more efficient and effective learners. The identification and study of expert (or good) learners will enhance our understanding of skill acquisition and how this may be promoted using instructional interventions and practice opportunities. Although these ideas are predicated on our research on perceptual-cognitive expertise in sport, we argue that they have general merit beyond this domain. The challenge for scientists is to generate new knowledge that helps those involved in developing learners who can acquire and refine skills more efficiently and effectively across professional domains.

3ERIC EJ728833: Improving Public School Performance Through Vision-Based Leadership

By

While vision-based leadership, frequently referred to as transformational leadership in the education literature, is widely regarded as critical to successful organization transformation, little research has been conducted into the relationship between vision-based leadership and public school performance in Thailand. Derived from substantial literature, a model is proposed to investigate if vision attributes (brevity, clarity, future orientation, stability, challenge, abstractness, and desirability or ability to inspire) and content (relating to teacher and student satisfaction, and efficiency) are associated with higher public school performance, while taking into account Principal, Teacher, & Organizational Factors. Future research directions and managerial implications are also discussed.

5DTIC ADA446551: Improving Background Multivariate Normality And Target Detection Performance Using Spatial And Spectral Segmentation

By

Target deteetion in reflective hyperspeetral imagery generally involves the application of a spectral matched filter on a per-pixei basis to create an image of the target lihenhood of occupying each pixel. Stochastic (or unstructured) target detection tcehniques require the user to define an estimate of the background mean and covariance from which to separate out the desired targets in the image. Typically, scene-wide statistics are used, although it Is simple to show that this methodology does not produce sufficiently multivariate normal bachgrounds nor does it necessarily represent the best suppression of likely false alarms.

7DTIC ADA574598: Improving Attachments Of Remotely-Deployed Dorsal Fin-Mounted Tags: Tissue Structure, Hydrodynamics, In Situ Performance, And Tagged-Animal Follow-up

By

We recently developed small satellite-linked telemetry tags that are anchored with small attachment darts to the dorsal fins of small- and medium-sized cetaceans. These Low Impact Minimally- Percutaneous External-electronics Transmitter (LIMPET) tags have opened up the potential to monitor the movements of numerous species not previously accessible because they were too large or difficult to capture safely, but too small for tags that implant deeply within the body. One goal of this project is to improve upon our existing tagging methodology to achieve longer, less variable attachment durations by carefully examining the factors that affect attachment success. Our key goal is to develop a method for attaching tags to cetaceans that provides the data needed to answer critical conservation and management questions without an adverse effect on the tagged animal. Therefore, we will also conduct follow-up studies of whales that have been tagged with a remotely-deployed dorsal fin-mounted tag to accurately quantify wound healing and the effects of tagging on whale survival, reproduction, and behavior. The combination of these approaches will provide an improved understanding of some of the key factors affecting tag attachment duration as well as a more complete understanding of impacts to individuals due to tagging.

11Neural Network Based Direct MRAC Tech-nique For Improving Tracking Performance For Nonlinear Pendulum System

By

A. Assefa (2020) Neural network based direct MRAC technique for improving tracking performance for nonlinear system. Journal of Informatics Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Vol. 01, Iss. 02, S. No. 4, pp. 1-15, 2020. This paper investigates the application of a neural network-based model reference adaptive intelligent controller for controlling the nonlinear systems. The idea is to control the plant by minimizing the tracking error between the desired reference model and the nonlinear system using conventional model reference adaptive controller by estimating the adaptation law using a multilayer backpropagation neural network. In the conventional model reference adaptive controller block, the controller is designed to realize the plant output converges to reference model output based on the plant, which is linear. This controller is effective for controlling the linear plant with unknown parameters. However, controlling of a nonlinear system using MRAC in real-time is difficult. The Neural Network is used to compensate the nonlinearity and disturbance of the nonlinear pendulum that is not taken into consideration in the conventional MRAC therefore, the proposed paper can significantly improve the system behaviour and force the system to behave the reference model and reduce the error between the model and the plant output. Adaptive law using Lyapunov stability criteria for updating the controller parameters online has been formulated. The behaviour of the proposed control scheme is verified by developing the simulation results for a simple pendulum. It is shown that the proposed neural network-based Direct MRAC has small rising time, steady-state error and settling time for a different disturbance than Conventional Direct MRAC adaptive control.

12Improving Support Vector Machine And Backpropagation Performance For Diabetes Mellitus Classification

By

Diabetes mellitus is a glucose disorder disease in the human body that contributes significantly to the high mortality rate. Various studies on early detection and classification have been conducted as a diabetes mellitus prevention effort by applying a machine learning model. The problems that may occur are weak model performance and misclassification caused by imbalanced data. The existence of dominating (majority) data causes poor model performance in identifying minority data. This paper proposed handling the problem of imbalanced data by performing the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and observing its effect on the classification performance of the support vector machine (SVM) and Backpropagation artificial neural network (ANN) methods. The experiment showed that the SVM method and imbalanced data achieved 94.31% accuracy, and the Backpropagation ANN achieved 91.56% accuracy. At the same time, the SVM method and balanced data produced an accuracy of 98.85%, while the Backpropagation ANN method and balanced data produced an accuracy of 94.90%. The results show that oversampling techniques can improve the performance of the classification model for each data class.

14ERIC EJ910197: Improving Performance For Gifted Students In A Cluster Grouping Model

By

Although experts in gifted education widely promote cluster grouping gifted students, little empirical evidence is available to attest to its effectiveness. This study is an example of comparative action research in the form of a quantitative case study that focused on the mandated cluster grouping practices for gifted students in an urban elementary school district. Some school administrators chose not to follow the model as designed, resulting in the emergence of two groups: gifted students in cluster-grouped classrooms and those in regular heterogeneous classrooms. This action research project analyzed achievement in mathematics for subgroups that included gender, grade levels, ethnicity, and English language learner status. Results indicate that the gifted students in gifted cluster classes demonstrated statistically significant and scientifically meaningful achievement growth, regardless of their demographic group. (Contains 3 tables, 1 footnote, and 5 figures.)

15ERIC ED536317: Effectiveness Of Small-Group Tutoring Interventions For Improving The Mathematical Problem-Solving Performance Of Third-Grade Students With Mathematics Difficulties: A Randomized Experiment

By

The present research assessed the efficacy of two tutoring protocols for improving the mathematics outcomes of at-risk third-grade students. Results indicated that students in the schema-based instruction (SBI) group outperformed students in the control group on word problem solving performance after 30 hours of problem-solving experience, but the problem-solving performance was not maintained 8 weeks following the tutoring intervention. However, the SBI condition led to superior performance on a standardized mathematics achievement test compared with the control group. With respect to metacognitive strategy knowledge, the SBI condition outscored the control condition. Further, results suggested that SBI was equally effective for students from various at-risk subgroups. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of SBI tutoring conducted by trained tutors. (Contains 3 tables.)

16ERIC ED488913: Rewarding Teachers For Students' Performance: Improving Teaching Through Alternative Teacher Compensation Programs. Education Policy Brief. Volume 3, Number 5, Spring 2005

By

Do teachers' salaries reflect their ability to teach effectively? This is an important question given that teacher salaries account for approximately 37 percent of total education expenditures across the United States. Furthermore, the objectives of the "No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)" for increased student achievement and the presence of a highly qualified teacher in every classroom have drawn attention to this issue. In an effort to maximize the return on the investment in teachers, states and school districts across the country have experimented with a variety of teacher compensation methods, including linking teacher pay to student performance. Performance-based pay is not a new concept, but it is one that is receiving increased attention across the country. Indeed, many states and school districts are exploring alternatives to the single-salary structure to improve teacher quality and enhance student achievement. This "Education Policy Brief" examines alternative teacher compensation programs and career ladder programs aimed at recruiting and retaining highly qualified teachers. It also highlights performance-based compensation programs in use in Indiana and other states across the country. A brief list of Web resources concludes the brief. [This document was produced by the Center for Evaluation & Education Policy.]

18ERIC ED385951: Can A Broad-Based School Indicator System Capture Information Relevant To Increasing Educational Opportunities And Improving Student Performance?

By

Connecticut's school-accountability law, Connecticut General Statute 10-220(c), requires reporting on a broad-based system of educational indicators that include measures of student needs, school resources, school performance (process), and student performance. This paper presents findings of a study that, using information from Connecticut's Strategic Schools Profiles database, explored the relative influence of school resources and school processes on student performance over and above that which can be attributed to student background variables, such as race and income. Fifty-one high-need elementary schools in Connecticut were divided into two groups based on higher and lower performance. Discriminant-function analysis was used to assess the influence of three blocks of variables--student, staff, and school attributes. Test scores from the 1993 Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) served as the dependent variable. Findings indicate that staff and school attributes can help explain differences in student performance among high-need schools. School factors can make a difference in the academic and physical performances of students. Parental involvement and school leadership also appear to influence student performance. Further, Connecticut's school-indicator system provides useful information for guiding school-reform efforts and for increasing educational opportunities. The findings are limited to schools with high concentrations of students living in poverty and may be influenced by imprecise measurement of constructs. Five tables and two figures are included. Appendices contain statistical data and a description of selected indicators. (Contains 23 references.) (LMI)

Numerical Study of Improving Aerodynamic Performance of Low Solidity LPT Cascade through Increasing Trailing Edge Thickness 作者: Li, C., 1 Yan, P. G., 1 Wang, X. F., 1 Han, W. J. 1 Wang, Q. C. 1 作者单位: 1. Harbin Inst Technol, Sch Energy Sci & Engn, Harbin 150001, Peoples R China. 提交时间: 2017-11-02 摘要: As one of the most important developments in air cooling technology for hot parts of the aero-engine, film cooling technology has been widely used. Film cooling hole structure exists mainly in areas that have high temperature, uneven cooling effectiveness issues when in actual use. The first stage turbine vanes of the aero-engine consume the largest portion of cooling air, thereby the research on reducing the amount of cooling air has the greatest potential. A new stepped slot film cooling vane with a high cooling effectiveness and a high cooling uniformity was researched initially. Through numerical methods, the affecting factors of the cooling effectiveness of a vane with the stepped slot film cooling structure were researched. This paper focuses on the cooling effectiveness and the pressure loss in different blowing ratio conditions, then the most reasonable and scientific structure parameter can be obtained by analyzing the results. The results show that 1.0 mm is the optimum slot width and 10.0 is the most reasonable blowing ratio. Under this condition, the vane achieved the best cooling result and the highest cooling effectiveness, and also retained a low pressure loss. 20NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19850024207: Coding Schemes For Improving MST Radar Performance, Part 7.1A

By

The performance of an mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere (MST) radar can be characterized by its system sensitivity and its range resolution. The former enables Doppler velocities to be determined even in the presence of very weak structures; the latter permits study of the fine structure within a turbulent region. Coding of transmitted signals has as its aim an increase in the effective radar sensitivity or range resolution without an increase in the peak transmitted power. This is accomplished by spreading the power in the frequency domain, giving better range resolution, without reducing the pulse width. Two basic techniques are used to accomplish this frequency dispersion: (1) using a type of pseudorandom code for the phase or amplitude within a single pulse, or within a finite sequence of pulses; (2) to code the frequency of the transmitted signal in some way. The various possibilities are discussed and are compared with the pulse-coding methods.

22Improving The Performance Of A U-shaped Patch Antenna Using Metamaterials For Biomedical Applications

By

This paper discusses the performance improvement of a patch antenna using metamaterials (MTM). The suggested antenna is a U-shaped patch antenna with a modified ground plane dedicated to biomedical applications. The size of the antenna is 40×20 mm2 with a FR4 substrate (εr=4.3, tanδ=0.02, H=1.6 mm) designed for operation at 2.4 GHz (ISM Band) and 6.23 GHz frequencies. The proposed MTM is 2×2 array positioned under the antenna at a distance of 2 mm. The integration of the MTM enhances clearly the antenna performance especially the return loss, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) and the gain. However, the reflection coefficient was enhanced from -10.71 dB to -36.63 dB at 2.45 GHz and from -13.88 dB to -36.54 dB at 6.23 GHz, the VSWR improved from 1.66 to 1.03 at 2.45 GHz and from 1.75 to 1.04 at 6.23 GHz. Additionally, the peak gain also was increased from 1.77 dB to 3.48 dB. The obtained results confirm the suitability of the suggested antenna for biomedical applications.

23Improving The Consensus Performance Via Predictive Mechanisms

By

Considering some predictive mechanisms, we show that ultrafast average-consensus can be achieved in networks of interconnected agents. More specifically, by predicting the dynamics of the network several steps ahead and using this information in the design of the consensus protocol of each agent, drastic improvements can be achieved in terms of the speed of consensus convergence, without changing the topology of the network. Moreover, using these predictive mechanisms, the range of sampling periods leading to consensus convergence is greatly expanded compared with the routine consensus protocol. This study provides a mathematical basis for the idea that some predictive mechanisms exist in widely-spread biological swarms, flocks, and networks. From the industrial engineering point of view, inclusion of an efficient predictive mechanism allows for a significant increase in the speed of consensus convergence and also a reduction of the communication energy required to achieve a predefined consensus performance.

24Study Of Proposed Methods For Improving TCP Performance Over Wireless Links

By

TCP is designed for networks with assumption that major losses occur only due to congestion of network traffic. On a wireless network TCP misinterprets the transmission losses due to bit errors and handoffs as losses caused by congestion, and triggers congestion control mechanisms. Because of its end to end delivery model, congestion handling and avoidance mechanisms, TCP has been widely accepted as Transport layer protocol for internetworks. Extension of Internetworks over wireless links is inevitable with the spread of ubiquitous computing and mobile communications. This paper presents study of different mechanisms proposed to extend Transport Control Protocol and other alternate solutions to enhance end to end performance over lossy wireless links. The paper studies details of different design choices proposed and their technical advantages and disadvantages. Finally, an analysis and proposal for best choice of proposed schemes are made for wireless networks.

25Robust Output Stabilization: Improving Performance Via Supervisory Control

By

We analyze robust stability, in an input-output sense, of switched stable systems. The primary goal (and contribution) of this paper is to design switching strategies to guarantee that input-output stable systems remain so under switching. We propose two types of {\em supervisors}: dwell-time and hysteresis based. While our results are stated as tools of analysis they serve a clear purpose in design: to improve performance. In that respect, we illustrate the utility of our findings by concisely addressing a problem of observer design for Lur'e-type systems; in particular, we design a hybrid observer that ensures ``fast'' convergence with ``low'' overshoots. As a second application of our main results we use hybrid control in the context of synchronization of chaotic oscillators with the goal of reducing control effort; an originality of the hybrid control in this context with respect to other contributions in the area is that it exploits the structure and chaotic behavior (boundedness of solutions) of Lorenz oscillators.

26DTIC ADA061046: The Value Of Special Training And Job Aids For Improving Unattended Ground Sensor Operator Performance

By

Requirement: To determine the value of unattended ground sensor operator training and job aids derived from an analysis of errors and to determine the effect on operator performance of target-activity level and number of sensors used in a string. Procedure: The training program and job aids were evaluated using the pretest and posttest design with 4 hours of scenarios containing typical target patterns at two levels of target activity generated by 2-, 3-, and 4- sensor strings. Operators detected and identified targets and estimated their speed and number. Results: The individualized training program resulted in significantly improved operator interpretation performance in target detection rights, identification rights, target speed, and target quantity estimation. Use of the job aid (nomograph) significantly improved performance in identification rights, target speed estimation, target quantity estimation, and reporting time. Student acceptance of the individualized training approach and both job aids was high. Operator performance on 3- and 4-sensor strings was 77% detection completeness with virtually no false alarms. Detection of targets was better during low-target activity than during high-target activity. The use of three sensors in a string resulted in the same operator performance as the use of four sensors.

27ERIC ED610559: Improving Student Accessibility, Equity, Course Performance, And Lab Skills: How Introduction Of ClassTranscribe Is Changing Engineering Education At The University Of Illinois

By

This paper presents three case studies that examined the use of ClassTranscribe in a diverse set of undergraduate engineering classes in 2019 and 2020 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. ClassTranscribe, a video viewing system designed with accessibility and learning in mind, was first presented to the ASEE [American Society for Engineering Education] community in 2019 [1]. The pedagogical features of the tool include: pause, leave and resume viewing; captions available in multiple languages; downloadable transcriptions; shareable links to video moments; and searchable content within each video and across an entire course. The importance of the tool in the context of a commitment to accessibility for engineering education is discussed. In addition, online video content that follows Universal Design for Learning principles enables all students to prepare for assessments and provides more equitable learning opportunities. Low-stress online learning opportunities may be particularly valuable for underrepresented minorities (e.g., [2] explored relative student improvement in multiple exams assessments in an online course with video lectures). The first study presented here describes two extremes: a supplemental-resource approach and primary-resource approach in the adoption of ClassTranscribe into an Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science (CS) course, respectively. In Spring 2020, ECE students used the tool as a supplemental learning resource to review and search live lecture captures. Whereas in the sophomore CS course (N=271 students), physical lectures were canceled and ClassTranscribe was used as a primary learning resource using short-length (<10 minute) videos. The methodology and analysis of the CS course outcomes were described in [3] but relevant findings are reproduced here: Students in the lowest quartile improved by 3.3 percentile points compared to previous semesters and statistically-significant positive learning outcomes were found at all levels of student performance. Each quartile of students who used the tool an above average amount of time led to increased final exam scores, with the lowest quartile increasing 14.4 absolute points compared to their in-quartile peers. A new contribution of this paper is an analysis of the interactions with the tool, which found three event types: Fullscreen-viewing, Change-playback-speed and Search-Transcription predicted improved exam performance and were statistically significant (p<0.01). In the second case study, video instruction was used to present safety and lab-handling techniques in a Bioengineering class prior to rigorous lab assessment. The student-specific analytic data available to the course instructor using the web interface allowed the instructor to check that each student had completed training materials prior to lab work. Student surveys measured several factors including the utility of the tool and students' preferences in video systems and video-based Bioengineering instruction. In the third case study, student feedback from CS and ECE courses were solicited on learning utility and digital accessibility. The majority of the 206 responses reported high utility ("moderately useful" or greater) of the tool when working on assignments (67%) and preparing for an exam (77%). The majority of respondents (96%, n=239) recommended the tool be re-used in future semesters of their course. We present example survey questions that respect student choice to not-self disclose a disability.

28ERIC ED489148: Module 4--Effective Teaching. School Improvement Specialist Training Materials: Performance Standards, Improving Schools, And Literature Review

By

The School Improvement Specialist Project prepared seven modules. School improvement specialists, as defined by the Appalachia Educational Laboratory at Edvantia, are change agents who work with schools to help them improve in the following areas so as to increase student achievement. These modules are intended to provide training materials for educators seeking professional development to prepare them for a new level of work. Module 1--Shared Leadership Module 2--Learning Culture Module 3--School-Family-Community Connections Module 4--Effective Teaching Module 5--Shared Goals for Learning Module 6--Aligned and Balanced Curriculum Module 7--Purposeful Student Assessment Each module has three sections: (1) Standards: Each set of content standards and performance indicators helps school improvement specialists assess their skills and knowledge related to each topic. The rubric format provides both a measurement for self-assessment and goals for self improvement. (2) Improving Schools. These briefs provide research-and practice-based information to help school improvement specialists consider how they might address strengths and weaknesses in the schools where they work. The information contained in the briefs is often appropriate for sharing with teachers and principals; each includes information about strategies and practices that can be implemented in schools, resources to be consulted for more information, tools for facilitating thinking about and working on school issues, and real-life stories from school improvement specialists who offer their advice and experiences. (3) Literature Review: The reviews of research literature summarize the best available information about the topic of each module. They can be used by school improvement specialists to expand their knowledge base and shared with school staffs as part of professional development activities. This matrix assesses the extent to which a school improvement specialist has the knowledge and skills to be following as teachers align practice with research on effective teaching, (2) teachers actively engage students in a variety of learning tasks, (3) teachers pose questions that encourage reflection and higher-order thinking, (4) teachers expect students to think critically, and (5) teachers use teaching strategies designed to motivate students. 29ERIC ED469625: School-Based Curriculum Development: A Proposal For Improving Girls' Performance In SMT.

By

The paper discusses the process and logistical experiences of developing science, technology and mathematics (SMT) curricula materials at the primary and secondary school levels in Uganda. The author developed the approach as part of the Female Education in Mathematics and Science in Africa (FEMSA) project. FEMSA is an Africa regional project that aims at improving girls' access, participation, and performance in SMT at the primary and secondary school levels in Africa. At the time of writing this paper, FEMSA was being implemented in 11 African countries, including Uganda. To date the most common approach to curriculum development is the centralized approach involving subject experts at the higher levels to develop curricula content at a national curriculum development center. This paper describes the efforts made to involve practicing school teachers in school-based curriculum development under the FEMSA-Uganda project. Based on these experiences, the author proposes improvements to the process, which are likely to have a greater impact on learners, particularly the girls, in terms of motivating them, increasing their interest, participation and hence improving their performance in SMT at the primary and secondary school levels in Africa. 30ERIC ED286912: Improving The Validity Of Classification Decisions On The Basis Of Competency Test Performance By Means Of Self Correction.

By

Two types of classification error are possible in competency tests: erroneous classification of an individual as a "master" of the subject (Type II error), and erroneous classification of a master as a "nonmaster" of the subject (Type I). If steps are taken to minimize Type II errors, an artificially high number of true masters will be classified as nonmasters. The remedy for this problem is to empirically correct for incorrect answers caused by irrelevant factors (fatigue, lack of motivation, etc.). This is done by self-correction: administering the test, checking it, and resubmitting the incorrectly answered questions to the student. The examinee is allowed to correct those incorrect answers. The self-correction technique was used in testing some 4,000 third-grade students in 80 elementary schools in Israel. Forty-one open-ended mathematics questions were answered and corrected. Seventy percent of students with incorrect answers provided correct answers when retested. Based on this finding, the probability of misclassification of true masters as nonmasters (Type I error) was calculated to be 40%. Further analysis showed self-correction to increase the test's internal consistency and its replicability. Retesting two weeks later provided nearly identical results. (MGD)

34DTIC ADA636806: Improving UXO/Clutter Discrimination Performance Through Adaptive Processing

By

Many cart- and vehicular-based unexploded ordnance (UXO) detection systems employ global positioning system (GPS) receivers to accurately determine the system s position. However, the unevenness of the terrain often causes the system to tilt during the data collection, introducing errors in the GPS measurements. In this work, three approaches are considered to correct the errors in the GPS measurements caused by the tilting of the system: low-pass filtering (LPF), linear predictive filtering, and adaptive filtering using a hidden Markov model (HMM). The LPF smooths the data collection path recorded by the GPS receiver. Although this filter does not explicitly model the system motion, it does remove dramatic, and unrealistic, jumps in the GPS measurements. In contrast, the movement of the system can be explicitly modeled by an HMM. The HMM characterizes the cart motion so that the subsequent filtering is appropriate for the type of motion encountered. The error correction techniques are first applied to simulated data, in which both the sources of error and the ground truth are known so that the performance of the algorithms can be compared. The algorithms are then applied to measured data collected with a cart-based system to evaluate the robustness of their performance. Although the HMM approach is found to represent an improvement over the LPF, robustness issues remain with this approach mainly through ambiguities in the cart orientation. A quaternion formulation is therefore proposed as a possible efficient means to track and process the cart orientation as it moves over the uneven terrain.

40Improving The Asymptotic Performance Of Markov Chain Monte-Carlo By Inserting Vortices

By

We present a new way of converting a reversible finite Markov chain into a non-reversible one, with a theoretical guarantee that the asymptotic variance of the MCMC estimator based on the non-reversible chain is reduced. The method is applicable to any reversible chain whose states are not connected through a tree, and can be interpreted graphically as inserting vortices into the state transition graph. Our result confirms that non-reversible chains are fundamentally better than reversible ones in terms of asymptotic performance, and suggests interesting directions for further improving MCMC.

41Improving The Performance Of K-Means For Color Quantization

By

Color quantization is an important operation with many applications in graphics and image processing. Most quantization methods are essentially based on data clustering algorithms. However, despite its popularity as a general purpose clustering algorithm, k-means has not received much respect in the color quantization literature because of its high computational requirements and sensitivity to initialization. In this paper, we investigate the performance of k-means as a color quantizer. We implement fast and exact variants of k-means with several initialization schemes and then compare the resulting quantizers to some of the most popular quantizers in the literature. Experiments on a diverse set of images demonstrate that an efficient implementation of k-means with an appropriate initialization strategy can in fact serve as a very effective color quantizer.

45Paying More Attention To Attention: Improving The Performance Of Convolutional Neural Networks Via Attention Transfer

By

Attention plays a critical role in human visual experience. Furthermore, it has recently been demonstrated that attention can also play an important role in the context of applying artificial neural networks to a variety of tasks from fields such as computer vision and NLP. In this work we show that, by properly defining attention for convolutional neural networks, we can actually use this type of information in order to significantly improve the performance of a student CNN network by forcing it to mimic the attention maps of a powerful teacher network. To that end, we propose several novel methods of transferring attention, showing consistent improvement across a variety of datasets and convolutional neural network architectures. Code and models for our experiments are available at https://github.com/szagoruyko/attention-transfer

47Improving TSS/360 Performance By Tuning The Table-driven Scheduler

By

During the period of time from August 1970 through January 1971 and while employing the TSS/360 Time-Sharing System at this institution, it was observed by the user community that the performance of the system was poor compared to the previously used time-sharing system - the CP/67 (version 3. from Cambridge Research Center). For this reason, the problem of improving TSS/360 performance was undertaken as a thesis project. Specifically, the improvements consist of an increase in system performance - responsiveness and throughput - by judiciously adjusting the parameters of the TSS/360 Table-driven Scheduler in accordance with the Principles of Balanced-Core Time and Working Set Size. A number of test runs were made, and the result are given, employing different schedule tables. A set of benchmark programs (or script) were developed and used with these tests that were characteristic of a \"typical\" or \"realistic\" load at this institution.
