Second Life is one of the many three-dimensional virtual environments accessible through a computer and a fast broadband connection. Thousands of participants connect to this platform to interact virtually with the world, join international communities of practice and, for some, role play groups. Unlike online role play games however, Second Life is a user-generated social platform where users have the freedom to chat and learn, build, exhibit and sell their creations, and participate in immersive Role Play. This paper reports on findings and personal reflections on a project run over two and half years with students of three language programs at Victoria University of Wellington's School of Language and Cultures. The purpose of the project was to measure language students' willingness to use the L2 naturally and holistically when performing semi-authentic tasks while immersed in culturally themed 3D virtual environments. A thermal manikin with the dimensions and weight of a fiftieth percentile standing man simulates metabolic heat and will be used for evaluating the thermal protection capability of clothing and diving suits in cold air and/or water environments. The manikin has 10 independently heated and controlled sections made from aluminum castings. Power for each section is controlled by the temperature level of the torso and by temperature differences between adjacent sections. The manikin is water tight at a depth of 3m without internal pressurization. A pressure equalization system permits evaluation of protective clothing in water environments equivalent to submersion in 300 m of sea water. An automatic control and data acquisition system computes individual temperatures from thermistor sensors, average section temperatures, section and total power, and both section and total insulation (in units of clo) of the garment being tested. As reported in DCIEM Report No. 89-TR-09, Development of a Canadian Forces Quick-Don Anti-Exposure Immersion Suit , Mustang Industries Ltd. developed a 3mm neoprene quick-don immersion suit to replace the quick-don anti- exposure flying coverall currently in use in the Canadian Forces (CF). It was known that the 3mm suit could not be stored in all 18 stowage positions in the CP140 aircraft; however, it was noted that the Aurora has sufficient spare storage space that stowage should not be a problem. Subsequently, DCIEM/MLSD was tasked to assess the thermal protection offered by 1mm and 2mm suits, compared to the 3mm suit, and to find suitable stowage locations in the CP140. It was found that the 1mm, 2mm and 3mm Mustang suits all provide considerably more thermal protection than the CF quick-don suit. Also, these three suits can be stored in the CP140 if appropriate modification or relocation of some stowage positions are made. (JS)

A technique for measuring the refractive index of micron sized fibers using a series of immersion index matching oils, and image contrast measurements is proposed and demonstrated. It has been applied to radial silks of the orb web weaving spider Plebs eburnus. These have widths of 1-2 microns. Values about 1.5500 are obtained, with birefringence values between 0.0000 and 0.0133 for individual silks. An uncertainty in the range +/- 5 x 10(exp -4) to +/- 2 x 10(exp -3) is achieved for these challenging samples. This accuracy is about a twenty times improvement on previously reported measurements for spider silks using other techniques. The technique is used to obtain measurements of the refractive index of spider silks as a function of wavelength, for the first time. An Abbe number for the radial silks of Plebs eburnus of 32 is found.

Motivated by attrition in French immersion programs in Canada, a study was undertaken of the perceptions of French coordinators, helping teachers, school principals, and French immersion teachers in British Columbia (Canada) school districts regarding the attrition rate and students' reasons for leaving immersion. The research differed from previous studies in that it also investigated the strategies used by administrators and teacher to reduce attrition. Over two-thirds of French coordinators responding felt the dropout rate was normal. Elementary school principals felt students were more likely to drop out in seventh grade early immersion than late immersion, and secondary school principals felt students were more likely to drop out in eighth grade. There was little consensus among the teachers. Overall, data suggest that junior high school is a critical period for retention. All groups felt academic difficulty, limited choice of subjects, and peer pressure were the most common reasons for leaving immersion. Some districts had participated in research on French immersion attrition; most of the coordinators and some principals and teachers mentioned some form of action to reduce attrition. Suggestions for intervention to reduce attrition fell into three categories: district, school, and classroom. A list of suggestions to reduce the drop-out rate in French Immersion Programs is provided. (Contains 11 references.) (MSE)

The results of a longitudinal evaluation of an innovative educational program in bilingual immersion at the San Diego City Schools are presented. The program's goals emphasized the acquisition of communicative proficiency, in English and Spanish, for both native-English-speaking and native-Spanish-speaking students. Using a quasi-experimental longitudinal design, the evaluation investigated the effectiveness of the San Diego program on the academic achievement, in both Spanish and English, of 78 fluent-English-proficient students (FEPS) and limited-English-proficient students (LEPS) in grades 2 through 6. As expected, both groups of students demonstrated achievement gains in reading and math (on both Spanish- and English-language tests), and performed at or above national norms in all subject areas by the end of elementary school. These findings are discussed in terms of their conceptual and evaluative significance, and with respect to ongoing debates in the scholarly and policy-making communities. 36 references. (Author/DJD)

An immersion program in a public elementary school in Montgomery County, Maryland, uses French as the medium of instruction in academic subjects. The program is based on the theory that language is learned best when there is a need to understand and communicate in that language. All students are eligible for enrollment in the multi-age classes. The Montgomery County curriculum is followed, using French materials. The major aims of the program are for the children to master their school subjects and to acquire substantive fluency in French. Standardized test results show the immersion students to be comparable in ability and achievement to their peers in English-speaking American classes and in French immersion classes in Canada. Immersion in general requires a great deal of planning and extra effort on the part of the teachers. Parents, other adults, and high school students work in the classroom to assist the teachers and to learn French. The program's only added cost to the school system is for foreign language materials. Plunges represent a type of education that is experiential, meaningful, interesting, challenging, confidence-building, growth-inducing and rewarding for most students. They represent a significant means towards students' greater understanding and acceptance of others, as well as of enhancing self-awareness; they thus have great potential as a viable educational approach in a full range of academic, business and government training programs. Given the myriad challenges that confront teacher education in terms of preparing future teachers for the increasingly diverse students they will serve, the cultural plunge provides one means of helping to sensitize student teachers to social and cultural realities, to their own values and biases, and to the students of today's and tomorrow's classrooms. For some years several professors at San Diego State University have been using a cultural immersion activity called a "cultural plunge." They have used this activity in a sociology program, in counselor education, and most recently, as described in this article, in teacher education. The author has been using the cultural plunge in teacher education since 1989, at which time he incorporated it in classes in that department, and several other teacher education faculty now use it as well. While faculty who utilize the cultural plunge tend to do so in a similar manner, there are some differences among the approaches. This article describes the way in which the author approaches this activity. (Contains 1 table.)

This article updates the Culver City Spanish Immersion Program. Research results for the third year of the program (1973-74) are summarized, and research in progress during the 1974-75 year is discussed. The article closes with a discussion of a series of research issues for investigation, issues in many ways prompted by already completed research. Appended to this brief article is a transcript of a symposium on the Culver City program held at the 1975 TESOL convention in Los Angeles. The transcript contains an historical overview, a statement of theoretical assumptions about second language learning by young children, and statements by the three teachers involved, the principal, and a parent, as well as three researchers. An evaluation of Manitoba's French immersion programs at the levels of grades 3, 6, and 9 focused on program effectiveness in teaching listening comprehension and speech skills. The results for grade 6 are presented here. The first section describes the framework of the immersion curriculum and the listening and oral skills targeted in it. The second section outlines the study's design, including the evaluation instrument used, its pilot testing, sampling, data collection, evaluators, scoring, and evaluation criteria. The third section presents results and interpretation, and the final section offers conclusions and nine recommendations for program design, classroom implementation, and program administration. It was found that objectives of the oral comprehension and speaking skills components of the French-as-a-Second-Language curriculum were adequately achieved. However, four of the objectives used for the evaluation were judged unsatisfactory: (1) expressions from context; (2) motivates others to act; (3) uses precise terms; and (4) uses appropriate grammatical structures. There was a higher level of achievement in oral comprehension than in speaking skills. The evaluation instrument is appended. (MSE)

The partial immersion program at Key Elementary School (Arlington, Virginia), where half the instruction is in English and half in Spanish, has completed its sixth year. The program review, including classroom observation, interviews with or surveys of students, teachers, parents, and staff, and student assessment, revealed a highly successful educational program for grades K-5. Program success is attributed to the dedication of principal, teachers, and staff; innovations in English- and Spanish-medium instruction, especially approaches to reading and writing; active parent involvement; and continued central office English- and native Spanish-speaking students. Three major recommendations are made for the coming year: (1) continued expansion and refinement of teaching techniques and strategies; (2) increased opportunities for teachers to continue training through in-service workshops and conferences on student cultural needs and instructional strategies; and (3) improved articulation between elementary and secondary school partial immersion programs. Overall student performance in this program confirms results of other partial immersion programs and verifies that the model is appropriate for educating both native English- and native Spanish-speaking students. Sixth-grade middle school students (N=91) in four mathematics classes served as subjects in a study designed to: (1) determine if the use of computers as an integral part of instruction would increase mathematics achievement; and (2) explore the impact of computers as an integral part of instruction on other factors (such as student attitudes, attendance, and discipline). Students in experimental classes (computer immersion project) spent approximately 40 minutes of each class period engaged in computer assisted instruction while a teacher directed, group centered instructional mode was used in control classes. When decisions regarding implementation of a new program which is as expensive to replicate as the computer immersion project must be made, both statistical and practical significance must be weighed. Although statistically significant differences were found, the practical magnitude of these differences was small, and this, coupled with other methodological problems, resulted in the conclusion that the computer immersion project did not demonstrate an impact of computers, even when time is maximized, on any of the variables studied. School district officials concurred with this conclusion and the computer immersion model was dropped and the computers put to other uses. (JN)

This special report on the assessment of French immersion students in Alberta focuses on critical issues and methodological problems with testing methods. After an introduction, the second section gives an overview of these issues and problems. Issues discussed include the following: whether students instructed in French immersion programs should be assessed and results reported on a provincial basis; whether participation in the achievement testing program should be mandatory for this population; in what language the students should be tested; whether all students should be tested in the same language; whether achievement should be assessed using the same tests used in the regular achievement testing program; against what standards student achievement should be measured; and against what reference group student achievement should be compared. The third section reports on a 1989 study to address the effect of the test's language on achievement. In the study, grade 3 and grade 6 French immersion students took the social studies achievement test in either English or French. Results showed that students testing in French scored significantly lower than those testing in English. Section 4 presents some statistical data concerning identification of appropriate expectations for French immersion students. The final section draws conclusions and discusses future directions for policy-making. (MSE)

This project seeks to improve foreign language and cultural acquisition methods for active component (AC) psychological operations (PSYOP) personnel. This project leverages official documents and empirical evidence, and data to determine the requisite levels of foreign language and cultural proficiency. Various methods of foreign language and cultural acquisition are reviewed to determine a method suitable for PSYOP personnel. These methods are then compared against those used by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Foreign Area Officer, and the United States Army Special Warfare Center and School language and culture acquisition programs to determine the effectiveness of each. This research concludes that immersion is a critical and necessary element of foreign language acquisition. Immersion replicates natural language acquisition, similar to the process by which children learn to speak. This research offers methods by which advanced language and culture proficiency can be achieved through an immersion-based language acquisition program.
