The appendixes to the final evaluation report for FY 1974 of the Experience-Based Career Education Program at Far West School (FWS) contain the following: an audit of the final evaluation report for FY 1974, a cost-comparison study of Experience-Based Career Education replication, information about data collection, and associated survey instruments. Survey instruments and collected data relate to: attitudes toward learning, attitudes toward tests, job-related attitudes, job-related terms, parent interview, parent questionnaire, resource person telephone interviews, resource questionnaire, student background summary, student change scale, student interview, student plans and perceptions summary, student questionnaire, student evaluation of school procedures entitled "The Way It Is/The Way It Ought To Be," and published tests. A Stanford University student report entitled "Anthropological Perspectives of FWS and Students" concludes the document. (JR)

This report describes the development of a flexible model program of instruction that included curriculum elements, training objectives, instructional methods and procedures, and measures for evaluating both individual trainee needs and training achievement for Work Incentive Orientation Training. The research is part of an effort to prepare unemployed people for job entry. The instructional program covers 18 major areas of employability orientation; a small study of the effectiveness of training in one of the areas--vocational assessment--is reported herein. (Author)

The Michigan State University protocol materials on learning were field-tested at the University of South Florida (U.S.F.). The field-testing at U.S.F. did not occur under controlled, experimental conditions. The information needs of the protocol developers were balanced with the instructional obligations of the instructors and the educational needs of the students in the classes. Instructional management problems and error sources were highlighted. Error sources included operant learning, positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, shaping, respondent learning, and model learning. (Appendixes of field-test material are included.) (MJM)

The project reported in the document focused on two aspects of career education programs. One focus was on determining effective methods for implementing career exploratory experiences for junior high school students. The second focus was on determining effective procedures for establishing a comprehensive school-based placement service for all exiting students. The project was conducted in 10 Alabama schools, five for each component, during the 1973-74 school year. The exploration component found that the most effective method for providing exploratory experiences involved a combination of on-the-job experiences, work-setting observations, visiting resource persons, a career resource center, and printed materials. The procedures followed, and results achieved by the placement component for each site are discussed in the report. Appended materials (36 pages) include: site selection criteria, program objectives and administative guidelines, procedural suggestions for individual project site, and a followup questionnaire. AN INTRINSIC PROGRAM ON THE SUBJECT OF CONSTRUCTION OF TEACHING UNITS WAS DESIGNED AND TESTED TO ASCERTAIN WHETHER STUDENTS OF EDUCATION WOULD LEARN AS EFFICIENTLY BY THE PROGRAM METHOD AS BY TRADITIONAL METHODS. THE 116 PAGE PROGRAMED TEXT COMPRISES FOUR SECTIONS--THE DEFINITION AND BACKGROUND OF THE TEACHING UNIT, THE YEARLY PLAN, THE TEACHING UNIT, AND THE DAILY LESSON PLAN. EIGHT CLASSES TOTALING 152 STUDENTS WERE EXPOSED TO TRADITIONAL INSTRUCTION, AND FOUR OF THESE USED THE PROGRAMEDD TEXT. A NONSTANDARDIZED, MULTIPLE-CHOICE, OBJECTIVE TEST, WHICH HAD BEEN DEVELOPED DURING THE TWO PILOT TESTS OF THE PROGRAM, WAS ADMINISTERED TO BOTH GROUPS AS A PRE AND POST-TEST. THE INSTRUCTOR AND TWO JUDGES GRADED THE TEACHING UNITS PRODUCED BY THE STUDENTS. A SHORT QUESTIONNAIRE WAS ALSO GIVEN. RESULTS INDICATED THAT STUDENTS WHO STUDIED THE PROGRAMED TEXT GAINED MORE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE SUBJECT THAN THOSE WHO WERE TAUGHT CONVENTIONALLY, BUT THAT THE PROGRAMED LEARNERS DID NOT DISPLAY GREATER ABILITY TO PREPARE TEACHING UNITS. THE TWO METHODS WERE EQUALLY EFFICIENT IN TERMS OF LEARNING TIME OUTSIDE OF CLASS, BUT WHEN CLASSROOM TIME WAS INCLUDED, THE PROGRAMED METHOD WAS MORE EFFICIENT. CONCLUSIONS WERE THAT THE PROGRAMED METHOD CAN BE SUBSTITUTED FOR THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD WITHOUT LOSS OF EFFICIENCY. THE ENTIRE PROGRAM, THE TEST AND QUESTIONNAIRES USED, AND RELEVANT TABLES ARE INCLUDED. (BB)

This cooperative research project, supported by the Office of Education Bureau of Research, attempts to answer questions on the effectiveness of reading instruction during a sixth grade beginning Spanish program. Major areas studied include: (1) the effects of reading instruction on listening, speaking, and reading skills, (2) the amounts of reading instruction necessary to effect a significant difference, and (3) the relative effectiveness of new and review reading content. Statistically inconclusive results limit the conclusions to a discussion of trends. The major recommendation growing out of this study is that further investigation in all three areas is greatly needed. Extensive appendixes are included. (AF)

This general concept provides a basis for planning, since it indicates the substantive matters that intelligence production may treat. c. It is also necessary in planning to show what matters intelligence production must treat because of .their bearing on US security. An intelligence produc tion plan must set forth the best judgment of intelligence producers as to what intelligence actually is needed as of any one time. In short, the end product would be a tentative schedule of intelligence to be produced, do An. intelligence production plan of this kind, to be useful in regulating the work of ORE and related intelligence agencies, should accurately reflect the judgment of broadly competent, substantively informed intelligence producers. In the context of intelligence planning, intelligence producers must be informed not only about world affairs that may have a bearing on US security (the normal sphere of competence of intel- ligence producers) but also about the actual preoccupa? tions of policy-makers responsible for US security. .2. Attached for your information and guidance is a copy of the comments I received from on the 17 January draft of the Board's Quarterly Report. He is reluctant to have the Board's report go to Mr. Bannerman without some clarification of the points he raises. 2. I also spoke with the Chief of the Records Center and he finds the Board's total of 8,737 feet of removed records to be much higher than his records show. I asked about any backlog and historic records he may have in suspense. He has included all possibilities in his calculations. Consequently, it would seem prudent for the Board members to compare their lists of the specific Job numbers they have reviewed and purged to see if we can establish a valid total we can re- port. 3. The Board shall meet again on Wednesday, 22 January at 2:00 p.m. in Room 4F-21 Headquarters to complete the subject report.
