2ERIC ED574540: The Effect Of Private School Vouchers On Political Participation: Experimental Evidence From New York City. Program On Education Policy And Governance Working Paper Series. PEPG 16-01

By

In 1997, the New York School Choice Scholarships Foundation Program (SCSF) randomly offered three-year scholarships to attend private schools to approximately 1,000 low-income families in New York City. In this paper we leverage exogenous variation generated by the SCSF to estimate the causal effect of the private school voucher offer--and the private school attendance it induced--on later-life voter registration and turnout outcomes. Our results demonstrate that the voucher intervention had no effect on registering to vote or voting in any of several elections for either the full sample or any of several demographic subgroups. Although unique aspects of the SCSF context impose limits on the scope of our results, they have clear implications for assessing the relative effectiveness of public and private schools in preparing democratic citizens. We close the paper by discussing the implications of the results for research and policy. Supplemental tables are appended.

7City Size And Life Satisfaction Among Japanese: An Experimental Study

By

We found that the size of city was associated with higher levels of life satisfaction among Japanese, and that relational mobility mediated the association. However, one major shortcoming of these findings was the correlational nature of the data. To clarify the causality, we experimentally manipulate the size of city and measure life satisfaction among Japanese. We also seek to replicate the mediational role of relational mobility in the effects of the size of city on life satisfaction among Japanese.

10ERIC ED066219: Preschool Education For Inner-City Children: Preliminary Results Of An Experimental Montessori Programme.

By

Early results from a Montessori nursery program initiated by Toronto, Canada, in 1971, to help inner-city children prepare for formal education indicate that the mothers of the 15 three- and four-year-old children were pleased with the program. Specifically, they felt that the children had increased their verbal skills, preparedness for junior kindergarten, and social maturity. However, not all mothers were pleased with the increased independence shown by some of the children. A study of the children's characteristics suggested that caution should be exerted in extrapolating the findings from other so-called disadvantaged children to inner-city children in one's own city. Other data are useful but the needs of a particular population must be carefully observed. When isolating deficiencies or identity needs, wholesale generalizations from superficial measures should not be made. Precise and explicit definitions should be made for such terms as deficient in language, intellectual motivation, or conceptual ability. Otherwise inadequate solutions are likely to result. (JS)

13City Size, Relational Mobility, And Life Satisfaction Among Japanese: An Experimental-causal-chain Design

By

We found that an association of city size with life satisfaction and the mediating role of perceived relational mobility among Japanese. However, the causal effect of perceived relational mobility on life satisfaction is still not established because we did not manipulate relational mobility. In this study, we investigate whether experimentally induced relational mobility affects life satisfaction among Japanese, even after controlling for city size. We use a well-validated writing task to manipulate relational mobility (Li et al., 2015, 2018) and an experimental-causal-chain approach (Spencer et al., 2005; see also Pirlott & MacKinnon, 2016).

17ERIC ED021979: The Rehabilitation Of School Dropouts In Oklahoma City: An Experimental Appraisal. Final Report.

By

The primary research objectives of the 44-month project were to determine the extent to which members of experimental and control groups would differ, after training in academic achievement, vocational achievement, personal-social characteristics, and job placement and job success. The subjects were unemployed or underemployed school dropouts, between the ages of 17 and 22, who had been out of school for at least 1 year. Comparisons were made among the groups: 118 subjects who received a combination of vocational and academic training, 115 subjects who received only vocational training, 59 subjects who received only academic training, and 46 subjects who received little or no training (control group). A pre-test/post-test control group design and extensive use of analysis of covariance procedures were basic to the study. Findings included: (1) During the first year covered by the followup period, the academic-vocational and the vocational groups exceeded the control group in proportions entering the labor market, in average number of weeks of employment, and in average annual earnings, and (2) By the end of second year of followup, however, there were fewer significant differences on each of these variables. The research paradigm, the educational program, a description of instrumentation and analysis, and a summary of related doctoral dissertations are included. (PS)

21ERIC ED086777: "Enriched And Extended School Year": East Cleveland City Schools. A Report...An Experimental Project Funded By Title III E. S. E. A. Ohio Department Of Education, 1971-1972.

By

The East Cleveland "Enriched and Extended School Year" program, funded by Title III of the 1965 Elementary Education Act, is an attempt to organize the educational activities of a school around the needs and learning patterns of its pupils. The major premise of the program states that children possess different rates and styles of learning, and respond to instruction more in accordance to its interest value than to its intrinsic cognitive value. The objectives of the program are to: (1) motivate the child to learn; (2) assist the pupil with hisidentification with his school; (3) change his patterns of learning; and (4) achieve one full year of academic achievement for each year of chronological development. Two major changes in the school process have been developed to attain those objectives. Firstly, six one-week segments of enriching school educational activities were interspersed throughout the year. These activities consisted of five days in instruction conducted by and in local cultural institutions. The instructional programs were highly ego-involving, requiring considerable active participation; included experiences ordinarily not capable of duplication on the school level; and were also designed to be highly educational. The second change was a revision of the traditional school calendar. [Parts of this document are not clearly legible due to the print quality of the original.] (Author/JM)

22ERIC ED087885: Soul City Expanded--An Experimental Demonstration Project For Adult Involvement. Final Report.

By

The University of Alabama successfully used the improvement of homemaking skills among disadvantaged families in an inner-city poverty pocket as a focus for a multidisciplinary approach to a three-year adult basic education (ABE) program when traditional ABE programs were rejected. The stated program goals were: (1) use the interest in improving homemaking skills to stimulate more responsible citizenship and to encourage individual participation in adult basic education programs; (2) develop models for the aggressive method of achieving individual involvement to motivate program participants toward responsible social and vocational goals; (3) reinforce community members in their daily lives; (4) help them be aware of the sources of help; (5) reach the inner-city's most underprivileged adults; (6) enable the residents to vocalize their need for adult education; and (7) aid the homemakers in seeking new avenues of involvement with outside resources in the solution of their problems. Progress was made by dealing with the residents of Soul City on an individual basis using the city's Living-Learning Center as the focus for making the services of Federal, State, and local government agencies available together with those provided by the Univeristy and community volunteers. Various individual and group strategies were employed in increasing ABE impact. (AG)

24City Size, Relational Mobility, And Life Satisfaction Among Japanese: An Experimental-causal-chain Design

25ERIC ED048417: The Rehabilitation Of School Dropouts In Oklahoma City: An Experimental Appraisal.

By

This is a report of a forty-four month investigation in which three curricular approaches to rehabilitating school dropouts were evaluated under experimental conditions. Program participants were school dropouts between the ages of 17 and 22, and the program was conducted in a large urban high school. The findings of the study were: (1) significant differences in academic achievement were found in only three of ten comparisons between students who received academic and/or vocational training and those who did not; (2) returning to a school situation had no significant effect on students' social-psychological characteristics; (3) there were no significant performance differences between groups receiving only vocational and those receiving academic and vocational training; and, (4) during a two-year followup, the treated groups exceeded the control group in securing employment and annual earnings. No cluster of predictor variables was identified. It was concluded that vocational training prepared participants to find and more continuously hold employment. (Author/DM)

27ERIC ED535326: What Works Clearinghouse Quick Review: "The Effects Of School Vouchers On College Enrollment: Experimental Evidence From New York City"

By

The study reviewed in this report examined the effects of private school vouchers on college enrollment outcomes. The vouchers were given to low-income elementary-age students through the New York School Choice Scholarships Foundation (SCSF) program. In 1997, the SCSF used a random assignment lottery to offer three-year vouchers to approximately 1,000 low-income families with children entering grades 1 through 5. The vouchers could be used to reduce the cost of attending any private school in New York City. The maximum value of the vouchers was $1,400 per year, which represented most of the typical tuition cost of attending a Catholic school in New York City. More than three quarters of the children who received vouchers ultimately made use of the scholarship at some point during the three-year period. The sample used in this analysis was 2,642 New York City public school students (1,363 students who were offered vouchers, and 1,279 students who served as a comparison group) in grades 1-5 in 1997. Of the participants, 42% were African-American and 46% were Hispanic. The study found no differences of the offer of a school voucher on college enrollment; however, there was a positive impact of vouchers on college enrollment (part-time and full-time) for African-American students. In addition, the study reported that African-American students who were offered a school voucher had statistically significantly higher rates of attending a private 4-year university or a selective 4-year university. The study also found no statistically significant effects of school vouchers on any of the outcomes assessed for the subgroup of Hispanic students. This study "meets What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) evidence standards" because it is a randomized controlled trial with low attrition for all outcomes, for both the full sample and for the two subgroups reported (African-American and Hispanic students). [The following study is reviewed in this What Works Clearinghouse Quick Review: "The Effects of School Vouchers on College Enrollment: Experimental Evidence from New York City" (ED534618).]

28EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF FLOODING PROBLEM- A CASE STUDY ON ARUNAVATI RIVER IN SHIRPUR CITY BY TOTAL STATION SURVEY

By

The study of local scour around bridge piers is very important for safe design of piers and other hydraulic structures. In this study, shape of pier is the main concern with three different velocities (0.18, 0.25, and 0.3) m/sec and other parameters like flow depth, bed material and etc. are remain same for all experiments. The experiments were conducted using laboratory flume, operated under the clear water condition using sand as a bed material. The test program was done on ten different shapes, Circular, Rectangular, Octagonal, Chamfered, Hexagonal, Elliptical, Sharp, Joukowsky, Oblong, streamline. were used to investigate the effect of the bridge pier's shape on local scour to conclude the optimal shape that gives minimum depth of scour. Comparison of results show that scour at upstream is directly proportional to exposed area of upstream nose of pier. The results showed that the rectangular pier gives the largest scour depth (7.6) cm, while the streamline shape gives the lowest scour depth (3) cm. The equilibrium scour depth of pier models compared with theoretical equations has been developed by some researchers and the results were very close.

30ERIC ED562168: City Connects: Building An Argument For Effects On Student Achievement With A Quasi-Experimental Design

By

While randomized experimental designs are the gold standard in education research concerned with causal inference, non-experimental designs are ubiquitous. For researchers who work with non-experimental data and are no less concerned for causal inference, the major problem is potential omitted variable bias. In this presentation, the authors provide an overview of a multi-year effort for the evaluation of a large-scale, school-based intervention for which a randomized design has not yet been possible to implement, but for which there are rich, longitudinal data and many opportunities to exploit design features to ask: does the intervention promote the achievement of children in high-poverty, urban schools? City Connects is a student support intervention that has demonstrated positive outcomes for elementary and middle school students. It is designed to address the out-of-school needs that can impact success in school for low-income, urban students. Having observed positive outcomes on academic achievement for students attending City Connects schools via quasi-experimental methods the authors sought to assess whether the findings can be considered a result of the intervention. In conclusion, the authors recommended that other school-based interventions that cannot feasibly use a randomized control design instead employ a range of methods aimed at reducing endogeneity and getting closer to understanding whether a causal relationship might exist between the intervention and its outcomes. Tables and Figures are appended.

36EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF FLOODING PROBLEM- A CASE STUDY ON ARUNAVATI RIVER IN SHIRPUR CITY BY TOTAL STATION SURVEY

By

Nowadays Total station has become an effective tool for analyzing the land cover change from the view point of economy. The main objective of present research is to cover the defects occurring due to flooding pattern of river & its problem of unnecessary widening observing all the factors of safety related to it. This study was conducted along the river of the Arunavati, which are frequently affected by the floods and due to that erosion is happening. Total station survey was useful for detecting the land cover change & suggesting the necessary steps for precautions needed for future flooding pattern. The problem is serious and should be inspected regularly. Otherwise, there is chance of river widening which can lead greater damage to surrounding features which is located near site of river line.

37Experimental Study And Modeling Of Three Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Technologies Of Meknes City

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are the most promising renewable energy source in Morocco due to its abundant solar irradiation. The Moroccan government has launched various renewable energy programs to encourage the use of PV systems. In this work we present a comparative study in terms of energy produced and the efficiency of a grid connected photovoltaic (PV) system installed on the roof of the building occupied by the “Ecole Supérieure de Technologie de Meknes” (ESTM). The on-grid connected photovoltaic system has a total power of 5860 Watts (Wp). This system provides an average daily reduction of 30 kWh in the consumption of electrical energy at ESTM facilities; this will allow us to save fossil fuels and reduce emissions of greenhouse gas. The average annual production of electric power is estimated at 10.5 MWh, equivalent to burning 0.9 tons of oil, which will prevent the emission of about 2 tons / year of CO2 in the atmosphere. Three different commercial solar modules, manufactured with different materials and technologies in monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon and amorphous silicon were tested.

38ERIC ED093397: Evaluation Of Experimental Four-Day Week Class Schedule, January Through April 1974 At Lake City Community College.

By

Due to the energy disturbance during the fall and winter of 1973-74, Lake City Community College experimented with a 4-days-per-week schedule of classes. a student evaluation of the 4-day week was completed by 58 percent of the full-time students. Fifty-one percent of the total student sample preferred the 4-day week, and 30 percent preferred the 5-day week. Forty-five percent of the students reported that they preferred a class period of one hour, and in a related item rating classroom activities, 44 percent reported no difference in classroom activities when the short and longer periods were compared. A total of 58 percent reported that they worked or were on a work/study program. These working students also reported that they were able to work more with a 4-day class schedule. The administrative staff (deans, department heads, program directors, and student services personnel) completed a narrative evaluation. Lists of advantages, disadvantages, and suggestions were prepared from these evaluations. The Learning Resources Center experienced a decline in services ranging from 15 percent to 44 percent. An analysis of class schedules for variation in services, enrollment data, and grades revealed no change that could be attributed to the 4-day week. An analysis of energy consumption over the years 1970-1974 indicated that energy was saved, but the amount contributed to the total energy-saving program by the 4-day week could not be determined with reliability. 39ERIC ED042809: An Experimental Assessment Program In An Inner City School.

By

This study is an effort to assess both the internal and external conditions of learning. The sample included 99 first graders in four classrooms of one inner city school in a large midwestern city. The assessment measure was a battery of tests selected from frequently used tests of visual perception, auditory discrimination, language, memory, cognition, and motor skills. The inner city classrooms, when compared to standardized populations, showed much greater variability and significant means differences on the majority of test items. The patterns of disability fell into modal profiles that presented essential information for educational prescription. Behavioral observations of dependency and aggression, when combined with ratings of teacher-pupil interaction, yielded information about classroom climate. Short term gains from the study included modification of curriculum grouping and staffing. Long term gains are expected to include progress toward validating an assessment battery and supplemental knowledge about the interaction between the pattern of children's capabilities and the climate of the classroom. 2Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

By

Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was a medieval scholar; Provost of King’s College, Cambridge. He wrote many of his ghost stories to be read aloud in the long tradition of spooky Christmas Eve tales. His stories often use rural settings, with a quiet, scholarly protagonist getting caught up in the activities of supernatural forces. The details of horror are almost never explicit, the stories relying on a gentle, bucolic background to emphasise the awfulness of the otherworldly intrusions.<br /><br />“Ghost Stories of an Antiquary” was written as two collections, presented here as two volumes in a single work. There is a short author’s preface before the first story in each volume. (Summary by Peter Yearsley)

5Portrait of a Lady, Volume 1

By

Book's cover

The Portrait of a Lady is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880-1881 and then as a book in 1881. It is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who "affronts her destiny" and finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. Like many of James's novels, it is set mostly in Europe, notably England and Italy. Generally regarded as the masterpiece of his early phase of writing, this novel reflects James's absorbing interest in the differences between the New World and the Old. It also treats in a profound way the themes of personal freedom, responsibility, betrayal, and sexuality. (Summary from Wikipedia)

6Washington Square

By

Book's cover

Washington Square is a short novel by Henry James. Originally published in 1880 as a serial in Cornhill Magazine and Harper's New Monthly Magazine, it is a structurally simple tragicomedy that recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, domineering father. <br><br>The book is often compared to Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships. James was hardly a great admirer of Jane Austen, so he might not have regarded the comparison as flattering. In fact, James was not a great fan of Washington Square itself. He tried to read it over for inclusion in the New York Edition of his fiction (1907-1909) but found that he couldn't, and the novel was not included. Other readers, though, have sufficiently enjoyed the book to make it one of the more popular works of the Jamesian canon. (summary from Wikipedia)

Daisy Miller is an 1878 novella by Henry James. It portrays the confused courtship of the eponymous American girl by Winterbourne, a compatriot of hers with much more sophistication. His pursuit of her is hampered by her own flirtatiousness, which is frowned upon by the other expatriates they meet in Switzerland and Italy. Her lack of understanding of the social mores of the society she so desperately wishes to enter ultimately leads to tragedy. (Summary from Wikipedia)

9Wings of the Dove

By

Book's cover

"The Wings of the Dove," published in 1902, represents to my memory a very old--if I shouldn't perhaps rather say a very young--motive; I can scarce remember the time when the situation on which this long-drawn fiction mainly rests was not vividly present to me. The idea, reduced to its essence, is that of a young person conscious of a great capacity for life, but early stricken and doomed, condemned to die under short respite, while also enamoured of the world; aware moreover of the condemnation and passionately desiring to "put in" before extinction as many of the finer vibrations as possible, and so achieve, however briefly and brokenly, the sense of having lived. 10Moral Equivalent of War

By

The Moral Equivalent of War, the last public utterance of William James, is significant as expressing the opinions of a practical psychologist on a question of growing popular interest. For the past fifteen years the movement for promoting international peace has been enlisting the support of organizations and individuals the world over. That this is a question on which much may be said for the opposition, James, though a pacificist, admits with his usual fair-mindedness, pointing out that militarism is the sole nourisher of certain human virtues that the world cannot let die, and that until the peace party devises some substitute, some moral equivalent, for the disciplinary value of war, their utopian goal is neither desirable nor possible. His own solution is advanced not as a practical measure, but merely as an illustration to show that the world is full of opportunities for the peaceful development and continuation of the martial qualities of human life. <BR><BR> This essay was written for general dissemination as a publication of the American Association for International Conciliation, February, 1910. As it not only presents a peace program but defines as well the most familiar arguments of the war party, no militarist article has been included, although it may be mentioned that a suggestive apology for war is to be found among De Quincey's Essays and also in Ruskin's Crown of Wild Olive. Additional documents on conciliation, approaching the question from innumerable points of view, are published by the Association mentioned above.<BR> (Summary by Harrison Ross Steeves and Frank Humphrey Ristine, editors.)<br /><br /> Edited and with an introduction by Harrison Ross Steeves (1881-1981) and Frank Humphrey Ristine (1884-1958)

11Golden Bowl

By

Book's cover

The Golden Bowl is a 1904 novel by Henry James. Set in England, this complex, intense study of marriage and adultery completes what some critics have called the "major phase" of James' career. The Golden Bowl explores the tangle of interrelationships between a father and daughter and their respective spouses. The novel focuses deeply and almost exclusively on the consciousness of the central characters, with sometimes obsessive detail but also with powerful insight. (Summary by Wikipedia)

12Varieties of Religious Experience

Book's cover

The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature is a book by the Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James that comprises his edited Gifford Lectures on "Natural Theology" delivered at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland between 1901 and 1902. These lectures concerned the nature of religion and the neglect of science, in James' view, in the academic study of religion. Soon after its publication, the book found its way into the canon of psychology and philosophy, and has remained in print for over a century. (Summary by Wikipedia)

14Five Jars

By

Book's cover

The Five Jars is the only novel written by James, who is best known for his ghost stories. It is a peculiarly surreal fantasy apparently written for children. While he is out walking, the narrator is drawn to a remote pool, and finds a small box that has been hidden since Roman times. He gradually learns how to use its contents, fighting off a series of attempts to steal it, and becomes aware of a strange world hidden from our own. (Summary by Peter Yearsley)

'The Beast in the Jungle' is a 1903 novella by Henry James, first published as part of the collection, The Better Sort. Almost universally considered one of James' finest short narratives, this story treats appropriately universal themes: loneliness, fate, love and death. The parable of John Marcher and his peculiar destiny has spoken to many readers who have speculated on the worth and meaning of human life.(Summary by Wikipedia)

19Jolly Corner

By

Book's cover

"The Jolly Corner," published in 1908, is considered by many to be a ghost story ranking second only to "The Turn of the Screw." James’s protagonist, Spencer Brydon, is an American of 56, returned to New York after 33 years in Europe, where he has apparently accomplished little while living off his New York rentals. His friendship with Alice Staverton, and his engagement in the development of a property awaken him to the possibilities that might have been his, had he chosen a different course of life. The "ghost," if that’s what it is, is that other self that might have been, and his confrontation with that self and its possibilities leads to a deeply unsettling, yet ambiguous, conclusion.

20Figure in the Carpet

By

Book's cover

The story ostensibly concerns a young literary critics who greatly admires the writer Hugh Vereker. A meeting with Vereker, however, shows him that he – and all other critics – have in fact missed the great point of Vereker's work, and the critic (and his editor) thereupon devote themselves to trying to unravel the mystery. James's story, however, almost certainly has an autobiographical side to it, perhaps itself criticizing those critics who couldn't see, or wouldn't see, the figures lost in the carpet of his own writing. 21Sir Dominick Ferrand

By

Book's cover

"Levity" is not a word often applied to Henry James, but this story has about it an attractively lighthearted quality. It tells of Peter Baron, a poor, young struggling writer of adequate, if not transcendent, talent, who lives in a dreary London boarding house inhabited also by a mysteriously clairvoyant and beautiful young widow, with her small boy. When Baron buys himself a second-hand writing desk to stimulate the creative juices, he finds carefully hidden within it a cache of letters that appear to compromise a recently deceased statesman. The discovery and his struggle to handle the questions they pose ultimately change his life. Along the way he also discovers, as a fringe benefit, a talent for what Americans (though probably not Jamesians) call Tin Pan Alley. (Summary by Nicholas Clifford)

Book's cover

Pemberton, a young American with an Oxford education and out of money, takes a job tutoring Morgan Moreen, the 12-year old son of an American couple living in Europe in a style not quite matched by their income. Mr. and Mrs. Moreen's main purpose in life, it appears, is to win acceptance in the higher circles of French and Italian society, partly in the hope that Morgan's two elder sisters will be taken off their hands. Morgan, who is highly intelligent, is also precocious and perceptive enough to come to understand his parents' ambitious aimlessness. Something of a crisis develops when the Moreens fail to make good on the salary they've promised Pemberton, and he leaves, needing a steady income. By then, however, the tutor has become sufficiently interested in and attached to his charge to be unwilling to leave Morgan for long, and comes back to join the family when when Morgan's mother tells him the boy has fallen ill. There, however, he finds the family shipwreck that he has feared is now taking place, and he is in time to witness it. (Summary by Nicholas Clifford)

23Spoils of Poynton

By

The recently widowed Adela Gereth, a lover of beauty and passionate collector of fine objects, strikes up a friendship with the young Fleda Vetch, when both of them find themselves guests in the tasteless house of Brigstock family. Mrs. Gereth fears that her son Owen, an honorable but somewhat unimaginative young man, may take up with one of the Brigstock girls, and indeed he presently announces his engagement to Mona, the eldest daughter. That means that Mrs. Gereth will have to leave Poynton, the beautiful house that she and her husband filled with the furniture, china, tapestries, and other objects that they lovingly collected over the years. It is not so much possessiveness that drives Mrs. Gereth to want to maintain control over them (or so she claims, at any rate), but rather the sense that she will have failed if Mona, understanding and appreciating nothing of what Poynton contains, should become Owen's wife and take charge. The story and its developing conflicts are seen largely from the point of view of Fleda Vetch, the young woman who, her moral and aesthetic sensibilities tuned perhaps as finely as any of James's protagonists, finds herself caught in the middle. 24Pragmatism

By

Book's cover

'Pragmatism' contains a series of public lectures held by William James in Boston 1906–7. James provides a popularizing outline of his view of philosophical pragmatism while making highly rhetorical and entertaining lashes towards rationalism and other competing schools of thought. James is especially concerned with the pragmatic view of truth. True beliefs should be defined as, according to James, beliefs that can successfully assist people in their everyday life. This is claimed to not be relativism. That reality exists is argued to be a fact true beyond the human subject. James argues, nevertheless, that people select which parts of reality are made relevant and how they are understood to relate to each other. Charles Sanders Peirce, widely considered to be the founder of pragmatism, eventually chose to separate himself intellectually from James, renaming his own theory to ‘pragmaticism’.

This short novel is a black comedy about fame, manipulation, pretension, and surviving it all. The narrator, a reprehensible and seedy journalist, sets out to interview a minor author, and in his own quest for glory, turns the author into the celebrity of the day. The sudden and untimely death of the author, with his latest work unfinished, presents a troubling dilemma for the narrator, which he resolves with no more conscience than he had when he began his quest. 27Altar of the Dead

By

Book's cover

A fable of literally life and death significance, the story explores how the protagonist tries to keep the remembrance of his dead friends, to save them from being forgotten entirely in the rush of everyday events. He meets a woman who shares his ideals, only to find that the past places what seems to be an impassable barrier between them. Although James was not religious in any conventional sense, the story shows a deep spirituality in its treatment of mortality and the transcendent power of unselfish love. 29American

By

Book's cover

One of James’s early novels, The American plunges right in to one of the writer’s most enduring subjects, that of the innocent, or at least inexperienced, American abroad, seeking to come to terms with the social customs and conventions of an old European aristocracy (think of Daisy Miller, Portrait of a Lady, The Wings of the Dove and others). The aptly named Christopher Newman, having made a small fortune from business in California, has come to the Old World for the first time, determined to enlarge his experience by learning all he can of it. In Paris he meets an old acquaintance, Tom Tristram, who (though he himself has little interest in educating himself about Europe) shows him around, and introduces him to the young widow Claire de Cintre, whose family – the aristocratic de Bellegardes – distrust his American brashness and commercialism. Claire, nonetheless, agrees to marry him, thus pulling Newman, rather more deeply than he is prepared for, into a society that closely guards its secrets, and forcing him to face new and quite unexpected questions. 31Real Thing

By

Book's cover

The Real Thing is, on one level, a somewhat ironic tale of an artist and two rather particular models. Yet it also raises questions about the relationship between the notion of reality in our humdrum world, and the means that an artist must use in trying to achieve, or reflect, that reality. Though the protagonist is an artist and illustrator of books, not a writer, it's not hard to imagine that James has himself, and other writers, in mind.(summary by Clifford)

32Ambassadors

By

Book's cover

Henry James considered The Ambassadors his best, or perhaps his best-wrought, novel. It plays on the great Jamesian theme of the American abroad, who finds himself in an older, and some would say richer, culture that that of the United States, with its attractions and dangers. Here the protagonist is Lambert Strether, a man in his fifties, editor of a small literary magazine in Woollett, Massachusetts, who arrives in Europe on a mission undertaken at the urging of his patron, Mrs. Newsome, to bring back her son Chadwick. That young man appears to be enjoying his time in Paris rather more than seems good for him, at least to those older and wiser. The novel, however, is perhaps really about Strether's education in this new land, and one of his teachers is the city of Paris -- a real Paris, not an idealized one, but from which Strether has much to learn. Chad Newsome, of course is there too, and so are a scattering of other Americans, his old friend Waymarsh and his new acquaintance Maria Gostrey among them. Had Strether his life to live over again, knowing what he has now learned,. how different would it be? and what are the lessons he takes home with him? (Introduction by Nicholas Clifford)

35Birthplace

By

Neither the name of Shakespeare nor that of Stratford appears directly in this short piece by James, and yet both are absolutely central to his plot. The story has to do with Mr. and Mrs. Gedge, tempted away from a dreary northern town library, which he runs, to become the wardens – caretakers and tour guides – of the house where the greatest writer of the English language was born, and in which he grew up.<br /><br /> Or did he? There is, after all, a paucity of facts about His life (in James's text, that pronoun is always capitalized, as befits a deity) and only the slenderest of historical evidence about the existence of such a man. No matter; what is important is the myth of his life, and the myth needs to be cared for and fostered so that crowds upon crowds of tourists may come, and, with a proper reverence, worship at His Birthplace.<br /><br /> And yet it is only myth, and the more he thinks of it, the unhappier poor honest Gedge becomes (to Mrs. Gedge, however, a job is a job, and too much speculation on reality might perhaps lead to dismissal). James himself was high skeptical about the Shakespeare question (who actually did write all those plays?) But that's not the point here. Rather the story has to do with the making of a shrine, the selling of its wares (commodification, to use a fancy word) and the priesthood needed to protect the myths necessary to its existence.<br><br>What should the skeptical Gedge do about it? What, if anything, will he do? (Introduction by Nicholas Clifford)

36History of Farming in Ontario

By

Book's cover

This is a paper on the history of farming in Ontario. It take the reader through the early settlement from 1783 to the modern period of 1888-1912. We see how farming and farm industries developed and how the population was distributed during these times. We see the trends of settlers moving into the Urban centers instead of rural and how the farm industries (making cheese, butter, wool, etc) move off the farm to the city factories. <BR> Excerpt: “The farmer’s wife in those days was perhaps the most expert master of trades ever known. She could spin and weave, make a carpet or a rug, dye yarns and clothes, and make a straw hat or a birch broom. Butter, cheese, and maple sugar were products of her skill, as well as bread, soap, canned fruits, and home-made wine. In those days the farm was a miniature factory or combination of factories.” (Summary by Esther)

37Roderick Hudson

By

Published as a serial in 1875, Roderick Hudson is James's first important novel. The theme of Americans in Europe, so important in much of James's work, is already central to the story. Hudson is a young law student in Northampton, Massachusetts, who shows such surprising ability as a sculptor that the rich Rowland Mallett, visiting a cousin in Northampton, decides to stake him to several years of study in Rome, then a center of expatriate American society. The story has to do not only with Roderick's growth as an artist and the problems it brings, but also as a man susceptible to his new environment, and indeed his occasional rivalries with his American friend and patron.<br>Interestingly enough, at least two of the book's characters made sufficient impression on James that he brought them back in other books: the French-Italian-Yankee sculptor, Gloriani, who appears later in The American, and Christina Light, the American who becomes the subject of Princess Casamassima, one of James's later (and much longer) novels.<br>(Introduction by Nicholas Clifford)

38Sir Edmund Orme

By

Henry James wrote a number of ghost stories -- The Turn of the Screw being the most famous. Did he believe in ghosts himself, as did many of his contemporaries? It's generally possible to find earthly interpretations, Freudian and other, for his ghosts. Sir Edmund Orme, though, is unquestionably a real ghost -- except of course that James's unnamed narrator tells the story in the voice of yet a third man, and the narrator himself passes no judgments on the factual nature of what he is reporting (there's a resemblance here to The Turn of the Screw). The story has to do with two love affairs in two generations, and Sir Edmund, real or imagined, plays a role in each. In the end, then, it's still up to the reader to decide on the nature of the ghost, whether he's real or imagined. James gives you no clear answer.<br>(Introduction by Nicholas Clifford))

39Last of the Valerii

By

An unnamed American painter resident in Rome serves as narrator in this story, watching as his god-daughter Martha, becomes the wife of Prince Marco Valerio. The young bride is eager to use some of her American fortune in the service of archeology at the Villa Valerio, her husband's somewhat run down Roman house. Archeology can be, her god-father suggests, a rather expensive hobby, but to his (and her) surprise, the dig brings to light a lovely marble statue of Juno. Martha is overjoyed, but it is soon clear that her husband is overcome by the discovery, and overcome in ways that are to be disquieting. In this, as in several of James's stories, there are elements of the supernatural -- or so the reader might invited to believe. To what, in any case, will the discovery lead? 40Reverberator

By

Book's cover

Another Jamesian look at Americans in Paris. What happens when a reporter for an American scandal sheet (The Reverberator) is looking for a good story, though one which might interfere with the marriage plans of a young American woman in the City of Light? This book has been described as "a delicious Parisian bonbon," and its generally good humor stands in contrast with some of the writer's other work. (Summary by Nicholas Clifford)

41Turn of the Screw (version 2)

By

Book's cover

Henry James' classic ghost story comprises the written testimony of a young governess, charged with looking after two small children at an isolated country estate, who believes they are being haunted. As the story progresses, the governess' increasingly frenetic narration provokes the question: is she insane, or are the ghosts real? (Summary by Elizabeth Klett)

42Lesson of the Master

By

Book's cover

A promising young writer meets an older man whose works have inspired him, as well as a highly intelligent and attractive young woman, at a gathering in a country house. Anxious to learn all he can from the older writer, the young man seeks his views not only about art, but also the way in which a serious artist should live. By the end of the work, he has indeed learned his lessons, albeit not quite those that he was expecting. It's not giving anything away to say that this work bears some resemblance to James's later novel, The Ambassadors, which in many ways engages the same questions. (Summary by Nicholas Clifford)

Daisy Miller is an 1878 novella by Henry James first appearing in Cornhill Magazine in June–July 1879, and in book form the following year. It portrays the courtship of the beautiful American girl Daisy Miller by Frederick Winterbourne, a sophisticated compatriot of hers. 45Lady Barbarina

By

Book's cover

Rich and beautiful American girls heading to England to find themselves noble titles through marriage, and using their New World wealth to prop up the waning strength of the aristocracy, was almost a staple of late Victorian literature. "The Buccaneers," Edith Wharton called them, and their day is not over yet (think of Downton Abbey's Earl of Grantham, and his American heiress countess). In Lady Barbarina, however, Henry James explores the obverse of this old tale: what if the wealth is in the hands of an American man, in love with the beautiful daughter of an old and titled (but no longer so very rich) family? Legal marital settlements, common in England, less so in America, can be a problem. Think of them as the Victorian equivalent of modern pre-nuptial contracts, introducing a note, not of suspicion perhaps, but of cautious prudence in what otherwise might be seen as a match of pure love. For all their similarities, Britain and the United States remain divided by three thousand miles of open water. - Summary by Nicholas Clifford

49Portrait of a Lady (version 2)

By

Book's cover

The Portrait of a Lady is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880–81 and then as a book in 1881. It is one of James's most popular long novels, and is regarded by critics as one of his finest. The Portrait of a Lady is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who "affronts her destiny" and finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. Like many of James's novels, it is set in Europe, mostly England and Italy. Generally regarded as the masterpiece of James's early period, this novel reflects James's continuing interest in the differences between the New World and the Old, often to the detriment of the former. It also treats in a profound way the themes of personal freedom, responsibility, and betrayal. - Summary by Wikipedia

50Awkward Age

By

Book's cover

Nanda Brookenham is coming of age, and thus 'coming out' in London society - which leads to complications in her family's social set in London's fin de siècle life. James presents the novel almost entirely in dialogue, an experiment that adds to the immediacy of the scenes but also creates serious ambiguities about characters and their motives.
