2ERIC EJ1095247: The Implementation Of Action Research For The Improvement Of Biology Teaching And Learning In Senior Secondary Schools In Nigeria

By

The main objective of the study was to implement an action research strategy to improve the teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary schools in Nigeria. Specifically the following research questions were raised: (1) What are the levels of intellectual challenge included in the activities used for classroom and laboratory instructions? (2) What are the levels of intellectual challenge included in the redesigned course materials for classroom and laboratory instructions? (3) Will there be an increase in learning when a revised course material is used for classroom/laboratory instruction? (4) Is there any relationship between activities enjoyed by students and those that enhance their learning? (5) Is there any relationship between effective learning and perceived students enjoyment of an activity? Purposive sampling was used to select four senior secondary schools from urban and rural location of Lagos State. In each of the participating school two intact classes were used to act as experimental and control group. Altogether 267 students and their four biology teachers participated in the study. The redesigned course material was used to teach biology to the experimental class and the traditional course material was used for the control group for the second term of the 2014/2015 academic year. The major findings were: (1) The result of the analysis of the review of the activities and exercises in the recommended Biology textbook in use in Lagos State schools showed that all the exercises and activities were predominantly at the lower cognitive levels of Blooms Taxonomy of educational objectives. (2) The result also showed that the mean achievement score of the students taught with the redesigned course materials was significantly higher than the mean achievement score of those taught using the traditional course materials. (3) There was no significant correlation between activities enjoyed by students and those that enhanced their learning. Educational implications of the findings for the improvement of instructional practices were discussed.

3ERIC EJ1131068: Enhancing Teaching And Learning Of Home Economics In Secondary Schools With Wikis: An Action Research Study

By

This article discusses an action research study using a wiki as a course platform for teaching and learning Home Economics in secondary schools. A secondary Home Economics teacher observed that dessert recipes were too wordy and that students generally felt bored and were not eager to read them in full. To improve his teaching effectiveness, the teacher attempts to investigate the use of a free wiki service (Google Sites) in order to supplement traditional classroom teaching and practice with online learning resources and activities. An action research approach is adopted in the study and the teacher tries to improve his teaching strategies to enhance interactions between the participants and improve students' learning outcomes. Furthermore, the teacher also attempts to integrate assessment activities with wiki-based learning activities to support students' learning in his class.

4ERIC ED447930: Learning And Teaching Stories: Action Research On Evaluation In Early Childhood. Final Report To The Ministry Of Education.

By

Linked with professional development programs to support the implementation of Te Whariki, the national early childhood curriculum in New Zealand, a project was designed to: (1) construct a framework for assessment and evaluation in early childhood programs in Aotearoe-New Zealand; and (2) use this framework to develop an evaluation process through an action research trial in six early childhood centers. This report sets the context of the research project, outlines the theoretical foundations and the methodological approach, summarizes and synthesizes the data, and suggests some overview issues and implications for self-evaluation processes in early childhood centers. The action research trial used learning and teaching stories, narrative reflections used by teachers and practitioners to assess children and evaluate programs within their own centers over the course of one year. The trial found that center staff varied in their knowledge and confidence about Te Whariki. The learning and teaching story framework was useful in understanding the curriculum, and using the framework changed staff behaviors with, and attitudes toward, children and parents. Involving management and large number of parents in the process proved administratively complex. The project served to expand on the idea that evaluation of early childhood programs should be grounded in quality from the child's perspective. A number of key features of the action research process, as a process for self-evaluation, emerged. (Ten appendices include a project flyer, information on research dissemination, links between evaluation projects, and an outline of the assessment/evaluation framework. Contains 78 references.) Job-embedded professional learning throughout educators' careers for culturally relevant pedagogical knowledge and skill acquisition is necessary to support historically marginalized and minoritized students. Transforming culturally responsive practices from knowledge into skill requires time, self-reflection, and examining one's own bias. When studying culturally responsive professional learning, Parkhouse and colleagues (2023) found teachers needed to develop content knowledge in addition to culturally responsive strategies to make connections between curriculum and student lives. Additionally, they found: (1) time and space for collaboration during the learning process was necessary so educators can support and challenge each other; (2) professional learning should include opportunities to learn about systemic racism to better understand student experiences; and (3) time was needed to engage in culturally responsive action research. Action research encouraged teachers to implement new practices and reassess their own reactions to student behavior and build relationships. He and Bagwell (2023) found collaboration is an essential component noting it was equally important for facilitators to create space for inclusive discussions and for conflict and debate. Engaging in job-embedded culturally responsive professional learning influences teacher self-efficacy and is correlated with employing culturally responsive teaching in practice (Comstock et al., 2023). Research indicates adaptive, collaborative, individualized, and job-embedded professional learning can build teacher confidence and overcome systemic barriers to the implementation of culturally responsive practices (Baize, 2023). Specifically, Broemmel and colleagues (2022) capture the need for affirmation through coaching and mentorship in the study's title, "It took someone telling me that I could do it". How can this research influence the development of policies, programs, and practices? This research roundup provides a detailed bibliography of these studies.

7ERIC EJ1146466: The Case For Pedagogical Action Research In Psychology Learning And Teaching

By

It is just over 12 years since "Psychology Teaching Review"'s first Special Issue on action research psychology. In the guest editorial for that issue Lin Norton suggested that pedagogical action research can be controversial, and that for some academic psychologists it appears to be more than curriculum development rather than "real" research (Norton, 2002). Norton considers how much has changed since then. It is still difficult to find many studies in the published literature about systematically investigating aspects of teaching psychology practice through an action research approach, although there are more sources that use key word phrase like "reflective teaching" and "professional practice." In this article Norton considers why this might be the case. Norton argues for a more inclusive approach to pedagogical research which enables psychology academics to think more critically about how they teach and how they might improve their students' learning.

5Star Born

Book's cover

Andre Norton's "Star Born" pictures a human colony in another galaxy, driven away from Earth generations ago by a repressive government. Considered outlaws, the colonists are in permanent hiding.<br><br>They have developed friendship and cooperation with a local race of "mermen" who are equally at home on land or sea. But that race only took to the sea to escape a malevolent power that hunted them and killed them violently for sport - Those Others.<br><br>With a global decline in the population and reach of Those Others, contacts are few and the humans have no direct knowledge of them. So it is a major surprise when Dalgard, a human scout on his coming-of-age expedition, along with his "knife-brother" Sssuri of the mermen, run into a party of Those Others who are bent on reclaiming hideous weaponries left behind in one of their abandoned cities... and find that they are being aided by new arrivals from Earth! 6Time Traders

By

Book's cover

If it is possible to conquer space, then perhaps it is also possible to conquer time. At least that was the theory American scientists were exploring in an effort to explain the new sources of knowledge the Russians possessed. Perhaps Russian scientists had discovered how to transport themselves back in time in order to learn long-forgotten secrets of the past.<br><br>That was why young Ross Murdock, above average in intelligence but a belligerently independent nonconformist, found himself on a "hush-hush" government project at a secret base in the Arctic. The very qualities that made him a menace in civilized society were valuable traits in a man who must successfully act the part of a merchant trader of the Beaker people during the Bronze Age.<br><br>For once they were transferred by time machine to the remote Baltic region where the Russian post was located, Ross and his partner Ashe were swept into a fantastic action-filled adventure involving Russians, superstitious prehistoric men, and the aliens of a lost galactic civilization that demanded every ounce of courage the Americans possessed. 12Elements of Geology

By

Book's cover

Geology is a science of such rapid growth that no apology is expected when from time to time a new text-book is added to those already in the field. The present work, however, is the outcome of the need of a text-book of very simple outline, in which causes and their consequences should be knit together as closely as possible,—a need long felt by the author in his teaching, and perhaps by other teachers also. The author has ventured, therefore, to depart from the common usage which subdivides geology into a number of departments,—dynamical, structural, physiographic, and historical,—and to treat in immediate connection with each geological process the land forms and the rock structures which it has produced. 16Time Traders, (Version 2)

By

Book's cover

If it is possible to conquer space, then perhaps it is also possible to conquer time. At least that was the theory American scientists were exploring in an effort to explain the new sources of knowledge the Russians possessed. Perhaps Russian scientists had discovered how to transport themselves back in time in order to learn long-forgotten secrets of the past. That was why young Ross Murdock, above average in intelligence but a belligerently independent nonconformist, found himself on a "hush-hush" government project at a secret base in the Arctic. The very qualities that made him a menace in civilized society were valuable traits in a man who must successfully act the part of a merchant trader of the Beaker people during the Bronze Age. For once they were transferred by time machine to the remote Baltic region where the Russian post was located, Ross and his partner Ashe were swept into a fantastic action-filled adventure involving Russians, superstitious prehistoric men, and the aliens of a lost galactic civilization that demanded every ounce of courage the Americans possessed. Book's cover

Operation Cochise: a carefully planned Western move to colonize a planet ahead of the Reds. Travis Fox had been an eager volunteer, but the morning he dragged himself half-conscious from the wrecked spaceship on the planet Topaz, he sensed the terror which would threaten the project. Travis never learned why the ship had crashed, nor why he and the other Apache agents had been shot into space without warning and under Redax control, a machine which had returned them to ancestral mentality. But the dangers on Topaz demanded free minds, for Travis soon realized that if the Reds already encamped beyond the mountains--a horde of barbaric Mongols completely dominated by their masters--discovered the secret of the eerie underground chamber in the towers hidden in a valley of mists, not only Topaz but Terra itself would be destroyed. The story follows the two of them and a new friend, Anson Kirby, through campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee and later on deeper into the South, first with Morgan and later under Forrest. 19Rebel Spurs

By

Book's cover

In 1866, only men uprooted by war had reason to ride into Tubacca, Arizona, a nondescript town as shattered and anonymous as the veterans drifting through it. So when Drew Rennie, newly discharged from Forrest’s Confederate scouts, arrived leading everything he owned behind him—his thoroughbred stud Shiloh, a mare about to foal, and a mule—he knew his business would not be questioned. To anyone in Tubacca there could be only one extraordinary thing about Drew, and that he could not reveal: his name, Rennie.<br /><br /> Drew had come west from Kentucky to find a father he had thought dead until the year before. Kinship with a man like Hunt Rennie, however—the legendary Don Cazar, owner of a matchless range and prize stallions—was not a claim to be made quickly or lightly. Posing as Drew Kirby the young veteran contrived to get himself and his friend Anse hired as corral hands at Rennie’s Range, but he was hardly prepared for the suspicion and danger which stood between him and his father. As hotheaded as his father, Drew was ready to move on to California—until the day all proof of his Rennie name was stolen from him, and his unwarranted arrest for horse-thieving brought on the accusations of the one man whose trust he needed.<br /><br /> Andre Norton’s _Ride Proud, Rebel!_ dramatically portrayed the last year of the Confederacy, when brave men like Drew Rennie met defeat with honor. In this sequel, Drew’s struggle to establish his identity and begin life anew in a raw, unsettled land reflects the courage of thousands of rootless men set adrift by the Civil War.<br /> - Summary by Front Dust Jacket

21Undying One and Other Poems

By

“The Byron of our modern poetesses," was the verdict of Henry Nelson Coleridge, the eldest son of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, writing in an 1840 issue of The Quarterly Review about the poet Caroline Norton. Born Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Sheridan in 1808, she was the granddaughter of the famous Irish playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. On their introduction to London Society, Caroline and her two sisters were dubbed The Three Graces for their beauty and accomplishments. Her disastrous marriage to George Norton in 1827 ultimately led to her campaigning successfully to change those Laws of England relating to Divorce, child custody and women's property rights. Caroline and her tragic experiences and life were the inspiration for many works by Victorian writers including Alfred Tennyson, William Makepeace Thackeray, Benjamin Disraeli, Charles Dickens and George Meredith. She died in 1877.<br><br>"The Undying One and Other Poems" published in 1830 was her second book. The title poem is an epic based on the legend of the Wandering Jew, the sinner who is doomed to roam the earth until Judgment Day. (Summary by Noel Badrian)
