7Established And Outsiders At The Same Time - Self-Images And We-Images Of Palestinians In The West Bank And In Israel

Palestinians frequently present a harmonizing and homogenizing we-image of their own national we-group, as a way of counteracting Israeli attempts to sow divisions among them, whether through Israeli politics or through the dominant public discourse in Israel. However, a closer look reveals the fragility of this homogenizing we-image which masks a variety of internal tensions and conflicts. By applying methods and concepts from biographical research and figurational sociology, the articles in this volume offer an analysis of the Middle East conflict that goes beyond the polar opposition between “Israelis” and “Palestinians”. On the basis of case studies from five urban regions in Palestine and Israel (Bethlehem, Ramallah, East Jerusalem, Haifa and Jaffa), the authors explore the importance of belonging, collective self-images and different forms of social differentiation within Palestinian communities. For each region this is bound up with an analysis of the relevant social and socio-political contexts, and family and life histories. The analysis of (locally) different figurations means focusing on the perspective of Palestinians as members of different religious, socio-economic, political or generational groupings and local group constellations – for instance between Christians and Muslims or between long-time residents and refugees. The following scholars have contributed to this volume: Ahmed Albaba, Johannes Becker, Hendrik Hinrichsen, Gabriele Rosenthal, Nicole Witte, Arne Worm and Rixta Wundrak. Gabriele Rosenthal is a sociologist and professor of Qualitative Methodology at the Center of Methods in Social Sciences, University of Göttingen. Her major research focus is the intergenerational impact of collective and familial history on biographical structures and actional patterns of individuals and family systems. Her current research deals with ethnicity, ethno-political conflicts and the social construction of borders. She is the author and editor of numerous books, including The Holocaust in Three Generations (2009), Interpretative Sozialforschung (2011) and, together with Artur Bogner, Ethnicity, Belonging and Biography (2009).

8Self-force Of A Point Charge In The Space-time Of A Symmetric Wormhole

By

We consider the self-energy and the self-force for an electrically charged particle at rest in the wormhole space-time. We develop general approach and apply it to two specific profiles of the wormhole throat with singular and with smooth curvature. The self-force for these two profiles is found in manifest form; it is an attractive force. We also find an expression for the self-force in the case of arbitrary symmetric throat profile. Far from the throat the self-force is always attractive.

In an effort to document demographic changes in the academic linguistics community, the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) has commissioned an annual report detailing information about job titles, students, degrees awarded, average salaries, and more. The report offers information about trends in student enrollment and employment by industry. Data for the report was compiled primarily from self-reported information to the LSA's online Directory of Linguistics Programs and Departments. It also includes information based on U.S. federal surveys of PhD linguists and institutions, along with data gleaned from the LSA membership database. Trends in linguistics for this year include: (1) The most common career outcome for linguistics PhDs is a position at an institution for higher education; (2) Within higher education, departments report that 42% of their faculty are full professors, but the non-professorial category is growing, particularly for women in other part-time positions; (3) The field of linguistics is growing rapidly for doctoral students; (4) Most linguistics doctoral degrees are awarded to women, who represent over half of graduate students in linguistics. This trend has remained consistent over the past six years; and (5) More linguistics degrees, including Bachelor's, Master's, and PhDs, are awarded to White or Caucasian recipients than any other ethnicity. [This edition is based on the original report prepared by Lauren Friedman and Alyson Reed. The data found in this edition were compiled with assistance from Robert Townsend, Benjamin Schmidt, and Karen Hamrick. For the 2017 report, see ED607312.]

Twelve Intervention Schools (2,101 Pupils) And 12 Control Schools (1,973 Pupils) Were Involved In The Trial. REAL Projects Was Delivered By Teachers, Supported In Many Instances By Teaching Assistants (TAs), With Further Support From Senior Leadership Colleagues. It Was Delivered For A Year In The Intervention Schools With A Relatively Large Proportion Of Timetabled Teaching (varying Between 20% And 50%). In Almost All Cases It Was Delivered To Mixed-ability Year 7 Classes. The Intervention Used Structured Cross-subject "REAL Projects" Planned By The Delivery Teachers Who Were Supported By Classroom Coaches From The Innovation Unit. The Innovation Unit Training And Support Programme For Teachers And School Leadership Was Found To Be Effective In Supporting This Intervention. Overall, The Findings Have Low Security. The Trial Was Designed As A Two-armed Randomised Controlled Trial With Schools Being Allocated To Intervention Or Control Groups. It Was Set Up As An Efficacy Trial Which Aimed To Test If The Intervention Can Succeed Under Ideal Conditions. However, 47% Of The Pupils In The Intervention And 16% In The Control Group Were Not Included In The Final Analysis. Therefore There Were Some Potentially Important Differences In Characteristics Between The Intervention And Control Groups. This Undermines The Security Of The Result. The Trial Results Did Not Find That The PBL Programme Had An Impact Either On The Pupils' Literacy Performance (as Measured By Progress In English 12 Tests), Engagement, Or Attendance. The Analysis Did Find A Statistically Significant Negative Impact On Students Eligible For Free School Meals (FSM), However No Negative Impact Was Found For Lower-attaining Pupils More Generally, Which Makes It Difficult To Hypothesise Why PBL Might Negatively Impact FSM Pupils Specifically. This Adds To The Uncertainty Of The Finding.

By

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a pedagogical approach that seeks to provide Year 7 pupils with independent and group learning skills to meet both the needs of the Year 7 curriculum as well as support their learning in future stages of their education. It particularly aims to improve their engagement in learning as well as practical literacy skills. This trial evaluates a specific type of PBL known as "Learning through REAL Projects", developed by the Innovation Unit--an independent social enterprise that aims to improve public sector services. A year long pilot project in 2013/2014 with eight schools (763 pupils) established the feasibility of a main trial. It provided the opportunity to develop the intervention and test the research procedures. The results contained in this report relate to a randomised controlled trial that took place between September 2014 and April 2016. Schools were also supported by Leadership Coaches. REAL Projects are driven by an "essential question" which has significant educational content. The projects encouraged pupils to create an "excellent" product through drafting and redrafting and then to exhibit their work to an "authentic" audience. Visits were made to intervention schools at two time points and consisted of lesson observations, interviews, and focus groups with school leadership, project leads, class teachers, and pupils. Two case studies were also conducted in schools that it was agreed delivered the intervention well. Key conclusions are as follows: (1) Adopting PBL had no clear impact on either literacy (as measured by the Progress in English assessment) or student engagement with school and learning; (2) The impact evaluation indicated that PBL may have had a negative impact on the literacy attainment of pupils entitled to free school meals. However, as no negative impact was found for low-attaining pupils, considerable caution should be applied to this finding; (3) The amount of data lost from the project (schools dropping out and lost to follow-up) particularly from the intervention schools, as well as the adoption of PBL or similar approaches by a number of control group schools, further limits the strength of any impact finding; (4) From our observations and feedback from schools, we found that PBL was considered to be worthwhile and may enhance pupils' skills including oracy, communication, teamwork, and self-directed study skills; and (5) PBL was generally delivered with fidelity but requires substantial management support and organisational change.

15DTIC ADA414499: Endurance Time In The Self-Contained Toxic Environment Protective Outfit (STEPO) With Personal Ice-Cooled Microclimate Cooling System (PICS) In Three Environments

By

This study of the Self-Contained Toxic Environment Protective Ouffit (STEPO) with the Personal Ice-Cooled Microclimate Cooling System (PICS) in three environments was conducted in September 2002 at the request of Project Manager - Soldier Systems, Product Manager- Soldier Equipment (PM-Soldier), Ft. Belvoir, VA. PM-Soldier was addressing the needs of the STEPO/PICS users for guidance on work times up to 4 hours. A 1999 study of this STEPO/PICS system demonstrated that 4-hr work times were not safe for workers in a 38 deg C (100 deg F) environment. Using the same testing format of repeated cycles of 10 min rest and 20 min of treadmill walking, eliciting an overall moderate energy cost of 300-350 Watts, this study looked at the system in three less stressful environments: HOT 32.2 deg C (90 deg F) / 30% rh MODERATE 23.9 deg C (75 deg F) /40% rh, and COOL 15.6 deg C (60 deg F) / 50% rh, to ascertain endurance times in each of these environments.

16Feeling Me In The World Of We: Self-esteem And Loneliness Across Time

By

How does individuals’ self-perception influence their perceptions of their social relationships? A growing body of research suggests that self-esteem, defined as individuals’ subjective evaluation of their own worth (Orth & Robins, 2014), is closely related with various aspects of social relationships, such as relationship warmth, support, acceptance and satisfaction (de Moor et al., 2021; Harris & Orth, 2019). Yet, relatively few studies have specifically explored the relationship between self-esteem and loneliness over time (but see Vanhalst, et al., 2013; Ti et al., 2022). Loneliness arises when individuals perceive their social relationships as deficient, either in quantity or quality (Perlman & Peplau 1981). It is a significant risk factor for poor health and psychological well-being (Hawkley & Cacioppo, 2010; Holt-Lunstad et al., 2015), and increasingly has become a matter of public concern for policymakers. From a theoretical standpoint, self-esteem should be closely interconnected with loneliness. Self-esteem serves at least two core functions (Zeigler-Hill, 2013): (1) it facilitates the exchange of information between the individual and their social environment, helping individuals to monitor their degree of relational value and, consequently, to respond to loneliness (e.g., sociometer theory; Leary & Baumeister, 2000); and (2) it fosters emotional resilience and provides a psychological buffer against negative experiences, including loneliness (e.g., terror management theory; Pyszczynski et al., 2004). Thus, this study aims to explore the dynamic interplay between self-esteem and loneliness over time.

18Self-energy And Self-force In The Space-time Of A Thick Cosmic String

By

We calculate the self-energy and self-force for an electrically charged particle at rest in the background of Gott-Hiscock cosmic string space-time. We found the general expression for the self-energy which is expressed in terms of the $S$ matrix of the scattering problem. The self-energy continuously falls down outward from the string's center with maximum at the origin of the string. The self-force is repulsive for an arbitrary position of the particle. It tends to zero in the string's center and also far from the string and it has a maximum value at the string's surface. The plots of the numerical calculations of the self-energy and self-force are shown.

20Self-averaging In Time Reversal For The Parabolic Wave Equation

By

We analyze the self-averaging properties of time-reversed solutions of the paraxial wave equation with random coefficients, which we take to be Markovian in the direction of propagation. This allows us to construct an approximate martingale for the phase space Wigner transform of two wave fields. Using a priori $L^2$-bounds available in the time-reversal setting, we prove that the Wigner transform in the high frequency limit converges in probability to its deterministic limit, which is the solution of a transport equation.

21The HD 163296 Circumstellar Disk In Scattered Light: Evidence Of Time-Variable Self-Shadowing

By

We present the first multi-color view of the scattered light disk of the Herbig Ae star HD 163296, based on coronagraphic observations from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Radial profile fits of the surface brightness along the disk's semi-major axis indicates that the disk is not continuously flared, and extends to 540 AU. The disk's color (V-I)=1.1 at a radial distance of 3.5 arcseconds is redder than the observed stellar color (V-I)=0.15. This red disk color might be indicative of either an evolution in the grain size distribution (i.e. grain growth) and/or composition, both of which would be consistent with the observed non-flared geometry of the outer disk. We also identify a single ansa morphological structure in our F435W ACS data, which is absent from earlier epoch F606W and F814W ACS data, but corresponds to one of the two ansa observed in archival HST STIS coronagraphic data. Following transformation to similar band-passes, we find that the scattered light disk of HD 163296 is 1 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ fainter at 3.5 arcseconds in the STIS data than in the ACS data. Moreover, variations are seen in (i) the visibility of the ansa(e) structures, in (ii) the relative surface brightness of the ansa(e) structures, and in (iii) the (known) intrinsic polarization of the system. These results indicate that the scattered light from the HD 163296 disk is variable. We speculate that the inner disk wall, which Sitko et al. suggests has a variable scale height as diagnosed by near-IR SED variability, induces variable self-shadowing of the outer disk. We further speculate that the observed surface brightness variability of the ansa(e) structures may indicate that the inner disk wall is azimuthally asymmetric.

22Self-force Of A Point Charge In The Space-time Of A Massive Wormhole

By

We consider the self-potential and the self-force for an electrically charged particle at rest in the massive wormhole space-time. We develop general approach for the renormalization of electromagnetic field of such particle in the static space-times and apply it to the space-time of the wormhole with parameter of the mass, $m$. The self-force is found in manifest form; it is an attractive force. We discus the peculiarities due to massive parameter of the wormhole.

24Time Pressure And Work Engagement: The Role Of Self-efficacy And Cognitive Appraisal In Everyday Working Life

By

This study examines the dual effects of time pressure on work engagement, considering its potential to act as both a motivating and a stress-inducing factor. While time pressure is a leading source of workplace stress (Statistik Austria, 2022), prior research highlights its capacity to foster positive outcomes, such as increased work engagement and effort (Kühnel et al., 2011; Baethge et al., 2017; Schaefer, 2024). The study aims to explore how employees' self-efficacy influences their cognitive appraisal of stressors (as either challenge or hindrance) and how these appraisals mediate the relationship between time pressure and work engagement.

27The Impact Of Time Pressure And Role Conflict On Emotional Exhaustion: Investigating Cognitive Appraisals And The Moderating Role Of Self-Efficacy In A Diary Study

By

This study is being conducted as part of a course at the University of Vienna and investigates the effects of time pressure and role conflict on emotional exhaustion. Drawing on the transactional stress model by Lazarus, we examine the mediating role of cognitive appraisals (challenge vs. threat) and the moderating role of self-efficacy. This study will be conducted as a diary study: Participants will report their daily experiences over two weeks, data collection will be at lunch break and after work.

29ERIC ED082291: Self-Instructional Materials For Topics In Elementary Accounting -- A Means To The Demonstration Of Pay-Offs From Individualizing Time-To-Complete. Final Report.

By

The materials in this report provide a case study of the development and validation of self-instructional lessons on four topics customarily included in a first college accounting course. For each topic, performance objectives were embodied in four criterion tests. The author provides documents relating to departmental curriculum decisions and to a personnel grievance that hampered the project. The project evaluation was accomplished by teaching elementary accounting both conventionally and by the system employing self-instructional materials during one semester and then comparing the performance scores of treatment groups on a number of subtests by analysis of variance. According to the report, those students who used the self-instructional materials did significantly better on subtests than did the conventionally taught students. The complete self-instructional materials and tests are contained in the document. (Author/JF)

31Critical Analysis Of The Philosophical Conception Of Verification Of Being/the Self In Heidegger's “Being And Time” Against Dao/the Other In Laozi's Daodejing.

By

That dao and being are correct as written about by Laozi and Heidegger respectively is exposed through eight perspectival points of verificationalism (which is correct because of the connectionism present in texts), connectionism present in texts, communication (which is correct because of the professional development of the other), professional development of the other, articulation (which is correct because of economic role-earning), accreditation, universalisation, and mimickry of nature. I aimed to model the verification of Heidegger’s ontology with Laozi’s nothingness on business, education and having children with humanist pedagogy. I will examine the magna opera Laozi’s “Daodejing” and Heidegger’s “Being and Time”.

32Chapter The Struggle For (self-)integration. Manuscripts, Liturgy And Networks In Verona At The Time Of Bishop Ratold (c. 802-840/3)

Between the 780s and the 840s the episcopal see of Verona was held by bishops coming from beyond the Alps, appointed by the Carolingian rulers and charged with control over a prestigious and strategically key bishopric. They were called upon to boost the communications between the local elites and the political and social machinery of the Carolingian world. In order to achieve that, they first had to negotiate their own integration in their new field of action, and to be acknowledged as effective political mediators between Verona and the rulers. The tools they used to do that were, on the one hand, their own skills and previous experience, on the other, the centre for textual production, preservation and dissemination they found in Verona, that is, the cathedral scriptorium and library. The books that can be attributed to them allow us to keep trace of the networks of relationships and cultural exchanges they developed, linking the two sides of the Alps. This paper focuses more specifically on the activities and endeavours of Bishop Ratold (c. 802-840). The liturgical and hagiographical manuscripts produced in Verona in that period are examined as key markers of Ratold’s intellectual networks, and of the ways in which he used them for his own need for self-integration. They also provide elements casting light on the introduction and reception of the Carolingian cultural reforms in the Kingdom of Italy.

34ERIC ED124043: The Prediction Of Achievement And Time Spent In Instruction In A Self-Paced Individualized Course.

By

Multiple linear regressions were employed to determine the relative contributions of cognitive and affective variables accounting for variance in college students' achievement and amount of time taken to complete a self-paced, individualized course. Study habits and attitudes (SSHA) made greater relative contributions to explaining total course achievement than cognitive variables. Cognitive variables (GPA and ACT) accounted for achievement variance under criterion-referenced conditions, and affective variables (SSHA and 16PF) accounted for achievement variance under norm-referenced conditions within the course. Time, which was inversely related to achievement, was explained best by college GPA and personality variables. Cross-validation of predictive equations for achievement and time in a subsequent sample was unsuccessful. (Author)

37An In Vitro Evaluation Of Effect Of Eugenol Exposure Time On The Shear Bond Strength Of Two-step And One-step Self-etching Adhesives To Dentin.

By

This article is from Journal of Conservative Dentistry : JCD , volume 17 . Abstract Objectives:: To evaluate the effect of the eugenol exposure time of an eugenol-based provisional restorative material on the shear bond strength of two-step and one-step self-etching adhesives to dentin, at three different time intervals of 24 h, 7 days, and 14 days. Materials and Methods:: Forty extracted human posterior teeth were sectioned mesiodistally to obtain two halves and the resulting 80 halves were randomly assigned into four groups of 20 specimens each (Group-I, -II, -III, and -IV). Cavities of specified dimensions were prepared to expose dentin surface. In Group-I, temporarization was carried out with noneugenol cement (Orafil-G) for 24 h (control group). In Group-II, -III, and -IV, temporarization was carried out with eugenol cement (intermediate restorative material (IRM)) for 24 h, 7 days, and 14 days, respectively. Each group was further divided into two subgroups of 10 teeth each for two-step (Adper SE Plus) and one-step (Adper Easy One) self-etch adhesive systems, respectively. A plastic tube loaded with microhybrid composite resin (Filtek Z-350, 3M) was placed over the dentin surface and light cured. The specimens were subjected to shear stress in universal testing machine. Results:: Group-II yielded low shear bond strength values compared with Group-III, -IV, and Group-I, which was statistically significant. Conclusions:: The prior use of eugenol containing temporary restorative material reduced the bond strength of self-etch adhesive systems at 24-h period. No reduction in bond strength at 7 or 14 days exposure was observed with either two-step or one-step self-etch adhesive.

38The Moderating Role Of Self-Efficacy In Relationships Of Time Pressure With Flow Experiences And Vitality In Daily Working Life

By

The study will explore the interplay of time pressure and self-efficacy as factors influencing flow experiences and their effects on vitality in the workplace. Flow, a state of deep immersion and enjoyment in activities, is linked to well-being, intrinsic motivation, and productivity, while vitality reflects physical and mental well-being. The study uses a two-week diary approach to collect data, examining daily variations in these variables and their relationships. Hypotheses are tested using multilevel analyses, aiming to identify how time pressure and self-efficacy interact to impact flow experiences and how these, in turn, influence vitality. The research aims to provide insights for improving workplace conditions, enhancing employee well-being, and fostering productivity through better management of time pressure and self-efficacy.

40Self-similarity In The Chemical Evolution Of Galaxies And The Delay Time Distribution Of SNe Ia

By

Recent improvements in the age dating of stellar populations and single stars allow us to study the ages and abundance of stars and galaxies with unprecedented accuracy. We here compare the relation between age and \alpha-element abundances for stars in the solar neighborhood to that of local, early-type galaxies. We find both relations to be very similar. Both fall into two regimes with a flat slope for ages younger than ~9 Gyr and a steeper slope for ages older than that value. This quantitative similarity seems surprising, given the different types of galaxies and scales involved. For the sample of early-type galaxies we also show that the data are inconsistent with literature delay time distributions of either single or double Gaussian shape. The data are consistent with a power law delay time distribution. We thus confirm that the delay time distribution inferred for the Milky Way from chemical evolution arguments also must apply to massive early-type galaxies. We also offer a tentative explanation for the seeming universality of the age-[\alpha/Fe] relation as the manifestation of averaging of different stellar populations with varying chemical evolution histories.

41Late-time Evolution Of A Self-interacting Scalar Field In The Spacetime Of Dilaton Black Hole

By

We investigate the late-time tails of self-interacting (massive) scalar fields in the spacetime of dilaton black hole. Following the no hair theorem we examine the mechanism by which self-interacting scalar hair decay. We revealed that the intermediate asymptotic behavior of the considered field perturbations is dominated by an oscillatory inverse power-law decaying tail. The numerical simulations showed that at the very late-time massive self-interacting scalar hair decayed slower than any power law.

45Established And Outsiders At The Same Time - Self-Images And We-Images Of Palestinians In The West Bank And In Israel

48Self-Esteem Modulates The Time Course Of Self-Positivity Bias In Explicit Self-Evaluation.

By

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 8 . Abstract Researchers have suggested that certain individuals may show a self-positivity bias, rating themselves as possessing more positive personality traits than others. Previous evidence has shown that people evaluate self-related information in such a way as to maintain or enhance self-esteem. However, whether self-esteem would modulate the time course of self-positivity bias in explicit self-evaluation has never been explored. In the present study, 21 participants completed the Rosenberg self-esteem scale and then completed a task where they were instructed to indicate to what extent positive/negative traits described themselves. Behavioral data showed that participants endorsed positive traits as higher in self-relevance compared to the negative traits. Further, participants’ self-esteem levels were positively correlated with their self-positivity bias. Electrophysiological data revealed smaller N1 amplitude and larger late positive component (LPC) amplitude to stimuli consistent with the self-positivity bias (positive-high self-relevant stimuli) when compared to stimuli that were inconsistent with the self-positivity bias (positive-low self-relevant stimuli). Moreover, only in individuals with low self-esteem, the latency of P2 was more pronounced in processing stimuli that were consistent with the self-positivity bias (negative-low self-relevant stimuli) than to stimuli that were inconsistent with the self-positivity bias (positive-low self-relevant stimuli). Overall, the present study provides additional support for the view that low self-esteem as a personality variable would affect the early attentional processing.

49Ambiguities In Determination Of Self-Affinity In The AE-index Time Series

By

The interaction between the Earth's magnetic field and the solar wind plasma results in a natural plasma confinement system which stores energy. Dissipation of this energy through Joule heating in the ionosphere can be studied via the Auroral Electrojet (AE) index. The apparent broken power law form of the frequency spectrum of this index has motivated investigation of whether it can be described as fractal coloured noise. One frequently-applied test for self-affinity is to demonstrate linear scaling of the logarithm of the structure function of a time series with the logarithm of the dilation factor $\lambda$. We point out that, while this is conclusive when applied to signals that are self-affine over many decades in $\lambda$, such as Brownian motion, the slope deviates from exact linearity and the conclusions become ambiguous when the test is used over shorter ranges of $\lambda$. We demonstrate that non self-affine time series made up of random pulses can show near-linear scaling over a finite dynamic range such that they could be misinterpreted as being self-affine. In particular we show that pulses with functional forms such as those identified by Weimer within the $AL$ index, from which $AE$ is partly derived, will exhibit nearly linear scaling over ranges similar to those previously shown for $AE$ and $AL$. The value of the slope, related to the Hurst exponent for a self-affine fractal, seems to be a more robust discriminator for fractality, if other information is available.

50Local-in-space Estimates Near Initial Time For Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equations And Forward Self-similar Solutions

By

We show that the classical Cauchy problem for the incompressible 3d Navier-Stokes equations with $(-1)$-homogeneous initial data has a global scale-invariant solution which is smooth for positive times. Our main technical tools are local-in-space regularity estimates near the initial time, which are of independent interest.

2Greener Than You Think

By

Book's cover

Do remember reading a panic-mongering news story a while back about genetically engineered “Frankengrass” “escaping” from the golf course where it had been planted? That news story was foreshadowed decades previously in the form of prophetic fiction wherein a pushy salesman, a cash-strapped scientist, and a clump of crabgrass accidentally merge forces with apocalyptic consequences. A triple-genre combo of science fiction, horror, and satire, Greener Than You Think is a forgotten classic that resonates beautifully with modern times. This is a faithful reading of a 1947 first edition text. (Summary by Lee Elliot)

3Poems of Marianne Moore

By

In 1921, American poet H.D. collected and published a selection of previously published poems by Marianne Moore. Although this angered Moore, as it was entirely unauthorized, she later accepted the edition as well made and used it as the basis for her own 1924 publication of Observations. Moore's unique poetry matches the experimentation underway during the American Modernist movement. Much of it incorporates seemingly out-of-place quotations into complex free verse that often uses Nature as a subject matter. <BR><BR> Today, despite the self-motivated alteration of her poetry in later life, done much to the dismay of her devotees, scholars consider Moore a significant American poet worthy of intense study in an a unalterable place in the canon.<br /> (Summary by Oscar Goff)</br>

4Esther Waters

By

Book's cover

“She stood on the platform watching the receding train. A few bushes hid the curve of the line; the white vapour rose above them, evaporating in the pale evening. A moment more and the last carriage would pass out of sight. The white gates swung forward slowly and closed over the line”. Thus opens the novel about Esther Waters, young, pious woman from a poor working class family who, while working as a kitchen maid, is seduced by another employee, becomes pregnant, is deserted by her lover, and against all odds decides to raise her child as a single mother. Esther Waters is one of a group of Victorian novels that depict the life of a “fallen woman”. It is considered to be Moore’s best novel. (Summary from Wikipedia, revised by Stav Nisser.)

The author is considered the first great Irish writer of realist fiction and is said to have been an inspiration for James Joyce. Celibates is a novel of three characters: Mildred Lawson, John Norton and Agnes Lahens. They have nothing in common other than an absolute love of themselves and an inability to sympathize with others. 24Untilled Field

By

George Moore, an Irish writer involved with the Celtic Revival was influenced by the French Realists and particularly by the work of Émile Zola. Often considered as the first modern Irish novelist he became involved with Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats in the establishment of the Irish Literary Theatre. As part of his involvement with the Literary Revival, he wrote a set of short stories set in Ireland, drawn from his experiences growing up on his family’s estates in Co. Mayo. The stories were intended to be translated into Irish as a part of a new tradition of Gaelic Literature. <br> The stories were later published in English as The Untilled Field, in 1903. Moore was initially influenced by Ivan Turgenyev’s collection of short stories, Tales of a Sportsman and in turn they are thought to have been an influence on James Joyce’s Dubliners collection. Moore’s stories look at Irish rural life at the end of the 19th Century and examines the role that the clergy played in the lives of those who remained after mass emigration denuded the Irish countryside. - Summary by Noel Badrian

30Song of the Olden Time

By

Book's cover

From a relatively early age Moore showed an interest in music and other performing arts. He sometimes appeared in musical plays with his friends, such as The Poor Soldier by John O'Keeffe (music by William Shield), and at one point had ambitions to become an actor. Moore attended several Dublin schools including Samuel Whyte's English Grammar School in Grafton Street where he learned the English accent with which he spoke for the rest of his life. In 1795 he graduated from Trinity College, which had recently allowed entry to Catholic students, in an effort to fulfill his mother's dream of him becoming a lawyer. Moore was initially a good student, but he later put less effort into his studies. His time at Trinity came amidst the ongoing turmoil following the French Revolution, and a number of his fellow students such as Robert Emmet were supporters of the United Irishmen movement, although Moore himself never was a member. (from A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH BY WILLIAM M. ROSSETTI - the introduction to THE COMPLETE POEMS OF SIR THOMAS MOORE)

31Poetry of Thomas Moore

By

The Dubliner, Thomas Moore, born in 1779 was a poet, composer, musician, and writer. He is most famous for the 10 volume work "Irish Melodies" published between 1807 and 1834 with Sir John Stevenson, which consists of 130 of his poems set to music, much of it based on old Irish airs. "The Last Rose of Summer" and "The Minstrel Boy" are two of the most well known. Many of these "Melodies" are included in this collection. He is perhaps most infamous for having burned, at the request of the Byron family, the manuscript of Byron's memoirs which Bryon had left to him for publication after his death. During his lifetime, his reputation as a poet placed him alongside Byron and Scott and Shelly. His narrative poem Lalla Rookh for example was possibly the most translated poem of the time and earned him £3000, what was till then the highest price paid by an English publisher for a poem. This collection contains a version of the poem but without the linking or "framing" prose sections. A lovely edition of the full poem can be found here https://archive.org/details/lallrookhanorien00mooruoft with illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. Moore was an Irish Nationalist and turned down the post of "Irish Poet Laureate" as he felt it would require him to tone down his outspoken Irish national politics. Despite this, he counted the Regent - later King George IV as one of his patrons. Moore died on February 25, 1852 and though much of his work is now neglected, his enduring legacy is that his "Melodies" which were translated into practically every European language popularized Irish Music throughout the world. - Summary by Noel Badrian

32Gamester

By

Book's cover

<i>The Gamester</i> is Edward Moore's most famous work, and while it has fallen into relative obscurity in the last century, at the time it marked an important shift in the staging of eighteenth century tragedy. More specifically, it was one of the first plays to depict bourgeois suffering through the valence of moral values, moving the genre away from the lofty depiction of kings and empires toward something much closer to home for middle-class audiences. As such, the play depicts the trials and tribulations of Beverley, a dissolute gambler whose uncontrollable addiction has endangered the financial security of his household. Unbeknownst to him, however, is the fact that his money is being pocketed by a cadre of villainous sharpers led by the Machiavellian Stukely, who has designs on Beverley's wife and pretends to be his concerned friend. What follows is a drama that, while not possessing the greatest artistic merit, nevertheless affects us as keenly as it did the people who saw its first performance at the Drury Lane Theater on February 7, 1753. - Summary by Tomas Peter <BR><BR>Cast list:<BR> Beverley: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/6754">ToddHW</a><br> Lewson: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11790">TJ Burns</a><br> Stukely: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10789">Tomas Peter</a><br> Jarvis: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7170">Alan Mapstone</a><br> Bates: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/9647">Joseph Tabler</a><br> Dawson: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/8879">Son of the Exiles</a><br> Mrs. Beverley: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11772">Linda Olsen Fitak</a><br> Charlotte: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11417">Eva Davis</a><br> Lucy: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10179">Sonia</a><br> Waiter: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11535">Nemo</a><br> Narrator: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/8164">Rob Board</a><br> Editor: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10789">Tomas Peter</a>

33Deeds of Daring done by Girls

By

Do not think, dear girls, that because you are girls you may not have as much courage as your brothers. I believe that quite as stout hearts beat beneath muslin frocks as under stuff jackets. When you have finished reading this book about your sisters, perhaps – if you do not already – you will agree with me, and think that it needs only occasion to call out the necessary courage. I have been asked which one of these heroines I think the most daring, but – oh dear – it would never do to have a favourite, would it? So I leave them to you, and that you will enjoy learning of their trials and triumphs is the wish of your friend, the author. - Summary by preface

35Muslin

By

Book's cover

Muslin, better known as A Drama In Muslin, is a realistic novel by George Moore. It describes the lives of five Irish girls after their graduation from convent school. Alice Barton, around whom the story revolves, is unfulfilled by the role society gives her. She wants to find herself, but is prevented from doing so by her gender. Olive, her younger sister, was less popular at school but more "successful" in real life. The sisters could not be more different, and the book explores the rivalry between them. But this book is not only about five girls. It shows the beginning of the battle between landlords and peasants in Ireland, the poverty, and much more. Upon publication, it was considered immoral and banned by the main British libraries. Despite this, due to the public's growing love of realism, it became very popular and is almost constantly in print. - Summary by Stav Nisser.

37When They Were Girls

By

Book's cover

Jane Addams, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Frances Burnett, Julia Howe, Hellen Keller, and Harriet Beecher Stowe are some of the influencial women in our history whose lives and accomplishments are covered in this little book. "When They Were Girls contains the stories of a group of American women, each one of whom occupies a very important place in her particular field. The stories of these women have been written many times before. We feel, however, that in this book you possibly may find that their stories have been written in a little different way. Our desire has been to bring very closely to the attention of our many readers some of the outstanding characteristics in the girlhoods of these women, and to show the relationship between these qualities in girlhood and the achievements of adult life." - Summary by author

Book's cover

Kate is a dress maker in the north of England who always did what was decided for her: serving those who come her way, marrying a man who is considered suitable, and living all her life "over the hills" she wants so desperately to cross. Until she decides her life are not enough for her. The novels she reads give her new ideas that change the course of her life forever.<br><br> George Moore was an Irish realistic novelist. A Mummer's Wife was his second novel. At the time, the circulating libraries were those who published the mainstream novels. They were charged with publishing moral works. They rejected A Mummer's Wife. This sparked interest among the public and it sold 14 editions by the end of the first year. This was considered so dangerous that the libraries took Moore's publisher to court over what was called The Literary Act which was meant to decide which work was considered moral. 45Sentimental Song Book

By

Julia A. Moore, the "Sweet Singer of Michigan," is today considered one of the true luminaries of bad poetry. Her verse, with its questionable grammar, clumsily contrived rhymes and its unique mixture of rigorous moralism and sentimentality, attracted wide-spread mockery from the press and the public, but also the attention of literary celebrities like Mark Twain. Ogden Nash, the comic poet, claimed that Moore was a major source of inspiration. Today the Flint Public Library in Michigan holds the Julia A. Moore Poetry Festival to celebrate bad poetry. - Summary by Algy Pug

49Bring the Jubilee

By

Book's cover

Hodgins "Hodge" Backmaker, a bumbling but curious and fiercely intelligent bookworm who has never felt at home with his family, left his home in rural Virginia in 1938. It's been over 70 years since the North lost the War for Southron Independence, in which his grandpa Hodgins fought bravely, but the repercussions of the impact of the loss still feels fresh after all these years. While the Confederacy blossoms with fine schooling, industrious manufacturing and a prosperous economy, the United States suffers from the lack of progress and poverty that has pervaded a lost union. When Hodge gets to the big city of New York, he finds room and board with a curiously pedantic and contradictory bookstore owner named Tyss who he discovers is working covertly for the Great Army, an underground movement in the northern states looking to take back the nation, through devious means. Eventually Hodge's fortunes lead him to a communal society of intellectuals called Haggershaven where he prospers as a historian. But when an experiment sends him back in time, will he be able to or even desire to change the course of history in that fated battle of Gettysburg? Celebrated as an alternate history classic and listed in David Pringle's Science Fiction: 100 Best Novels, Bring the Jubilee is a thought-provoking and detailed account of a fascinating "what if" scenario!
