In this report, the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) explores the role of coaching in first-year (Cohort 4) America's Choice schools in grades K-8 as it relates to the implementation of readers and writers workshops, referred throughout this report as the literacy workshops. The authors describe the America's Choice coaching model in detail, with the remainder of the report following from their understanding and investigation of different aspects of the coaching model: (1) the role of the coach; (2) the rollout of the literacy workshops in Cohort 4 America's Choice schools; (3) the various ways in which coaches work in class and individually with teachers; (4) the coach's role in facilitating group professional development; and (5) coaching in America's Choice schools in relation to the overall objective of fostering standards-based instruction. They summarize the factors influencing coach effectiveness, and conclude with some larger issues emerging from the research, as well as recommendations for the America's Choice design team. Continuing in the book of the Prophet Ezekiel, chapter 18, Rabbi Steve Berkson leads us to understand that Israel was using an idiom at that time, “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are blunted”. This idiom meant that children could receive condemnation because of the evil their parents had done. But YHVH corrected them by saying, “you shall no longer use this proverb in Yisra'ĕl. See, all beings are Mine, the being of the father as well as the being of the son is Mine. The being that is sinning shall die.” So what we learn is that no one can blame another for their own evil choices. We all will stand before the Almighty Judge on our own for what we have done in this life.We will learn the meaning of the Hebrew word, nephesh. We will see a to-do list for life and how YHVH gives us a preview of how He will judge all mankind. Key concepts from theory and research on student learning are discussed, and a conceptual framework to promote the design of local instructional improvement efforts is presented. The objective is to advocate that institutional researchers focus more directly on the basic issues of teaching and learning and to suggest that improving instructional program quality will improve student learning. The framework identifies factors, or intervenors, that affect the type/amount of student learning as well as policies and programs that may affect these intervenors. Six intervenors are covered: student involvement, learning expectations, assessment and feedback, individualization, instructional methods, and content. The intervenors are used as criteria to review the quality of instructional programs. Three types of improvement strategies are considered: student input (e.g., admissions, financial aid), process (resources and curriculum), and outcomes. Examples of quality improvement strategies for each type of strategy are identified. Finally, six implications for institutional research focusing on student learning and local improvement efforts are identified, including: preparation and continuing education needs of practitioners, and a new role and focus for policy analysis. If Paul were here today and observed the strife and division among some of us, would he be wondering why things haven't changed in the last 2,000 years? Would he need to be committed and put in a ‘rubber room'? What Paul had to address was that the people were boasting in men and how they may have arrived in some understanding that they judged others not to have. This kind of attitude is a condition of the heart and is not acceptable in the body of Messiah.
