6HEALTHY CITY BY DESIGN - Brain Health And The Built Environment: Aging In Place (Part 6)

By

The City of West Hollywood hosted a free in-person symposium on June 28th, 2025: Healthy City by Design. This year’s annual event featured a variety of presentations illustrating how design considerations can play a role in making cities, buildings, and interior environments healthier. New relationships between the science of brain health and design for aging-in-place are starting to emerge. In this dual talk, Siobhan Farvardin and Dr. Mike O’Neill from HKS Architects investigate how designers can think about taking advantage of the brain’s ability to change and adapt. And in doing so, look at creative ways to enhance the daily experiences of older adults as they age-in-place. For more information about the City of West Hollywood Urban Design + Architecture Studio, please visit weho.org. #healthycity #urbandesign #westhollywood #symposium #architecture #neuroplasticity #agingwell #brainhealth

10ERIC ED322022: Teaching About The Built Environment. ERIC Digest.

By

Critical thinking, responsible citizenship, cultural literacy, social relevancy; these concerns of educators in the social studies can be addressed through teaching and learning about the built environment. The tangible structures that humans have created (bridges, houses, factories, farms, monuments) constitute the built environment. Objects in the built environment can be used to enhance teaching and learning in core subjects of the social studies (history, geography, civics, and economics). This digest discusses: (1) what built environment education is; (2) why it belongs in the school curriculum; (3) how to connect it to the social studies; (4) how to initiate successful programs on it in schools; and (5) model programs and resources for teachers. 12Unearthing Us: Memory In The Built Environment

By

Stories live in the land and structures around us, and it’s in our nature to unearth them. This conversation pushes beyond common perceptions of preservation and memorial to challenge us to think about how memory is captured in landscape and the built environment—and what that collective memory means for a more empathetic civic life. Book signing to follow. Now in its 21st year, the Aspen Ideas Festival is the Aspen Institute’s signature summer public event. From June 25-July 1, 2025 almost 4,000 leaders, innovators, fellows, scholars, and attendees gathered in the Rocky Mountains to engage in deep and inquisitive discussion of the issues that shape our lives and challenge our times, spanning politics, business, science, the arts, education, and more. #AspenIdeas For more information about the Aspen Ideas Festival, visit https://www.aspenideas.org.

16ERIC EJ1155824: Bringing The Classroom Into The World: Three Reflective Case Studies Of Designing Mobile Technology To Support Blended Learning For The Built And Landscaped Environment

By

We report and reflect on three projects, carried out by us as educators and technology researchers over a four year period, that explore the use of mobile technologies in the fieldwork of Australian tertiary students of architectural history, landscape history and urban design. Treating these as three case studies, our focus is on the emerging process of designing, developing and deploying different forms of mobile-inspired fieldwork to complement class-based learning. The first two cases involve the development of apps that work as guides for students to explore places of architectural and historical significance in Melbourne, while the third case invited students themselves to create designs for a mobile app intended to communicate the influence of urban design thinkers on a particular place in Sydney. We consider how the iterative development and deployment of the apps and field exercises, over successive semesters, became one of extended co-design between students, tutors and teaching staff.

MARIA A. EL HELOU Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece E Mail: [email protected]   A B S T R A C T Cities are being built based on the concepts of the comfortable, easy, and fast for the inhabitants. However, what is being constructed is promoting physical inactivity, and people are finding that what was being considered as convenient for daily life is, in fact, harmful to their physical health. The life of a city relies on the activity of the inhabitants who are the breathing engine of the built environment. Hence, the balance between physical activity and mental activity (e.g., office work) should be maintained because the more people are physically healthy, the more they are productive and the more the city experiences economic growth which all leads to satisfaction and happiness among the city’s inhabitants. Therefore, a city that facilitates the reach to physical activity helps its inhabitants to overcome many physical health issues such as overweight and obesity, the causes of many physical complications that can affect mental health over time.  This study points to the many components of a city that beats overweight issues and especially obesity. One of this healing city’s aspects is the presence of green spaces and the green mobility that typically promotes walking and cycling instead of driving cars. Moreover, this city could foster the healing of prolonged stress and overall mental health related to human inactivity. Its analysis is based on in-depth interviews and results of previous empirical research in urban planning, psychology, and neuroarchitecture regarding people's perception of the visual environment they live in.The case study is the city of Beirut: in-depth interviews were conducted with a representative sample of Beirutis (people whose families come from the Beirut city and who were born in this city and are still living in it). These interviews helped measure these participants’ satisfaction with the physical activities and social life that is accessible for all the inhabitants through inclusive urban planning (such as clean open spaces, parks, sidewalks, free or inexpensive public spaces, facilities for green transportation, etc.). The results of the interviews analysis were supported with past data demonstrating the increasing obesity issues in Lebanon and previous data in urban and psychological studies that expound the way the brain processes the urban spaces that increase satisfaction and the urban areas that the city should be offering to its inhabitants for positive health outcomes. The results uncovered the cycle of physical health, mental health, and social contacts which altogether affect the soul of a city where the aim is first and foremost the right to a healthy lifestyle.

29Chapter FCM-Enabled Approach For Investigating Interdependencies Of BIM Performance Factors In The Sustainable Built Environment

In pursuit of a sustainable built environment, BIM plays a crucial role in the project's performance and has egressed as a powerful technology in the construction industry, impacting the outcome and the project delivery workflows. Numerous dynamic and interdependent factors influence BIM performance. However, Existing literature prominently focuses on exploring the influencing factors for BIM performance, ignoring the impact and strength of the interplay of these factors on one another, therefore offering an inadequate picture of optimizing BIM performance. The evolving nature and degree of complexity of construction projects necessitate the identification and comprehensive understanding of the interdependencies between factors contributing to BIM performance in the sustainable built environment. A Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) is a modeling method that represents and analyses the interplay between the factors in a complex system. So, this study proposes an FCM-enabled approach to investigate the interdependencies of factors contributing to BIM performance and conduct what-if scenarios, including predictive analysis. The developed FCM model can help reveal the hidden cause-effect relationships among a complex system of BIM performance factors, enabling stakeholders to develop more informed strategies and proactively plan to optimize BIM Performance

31ERIC ED172343: The Built Environment For The Elderly And The Handicapped. A Selective Bibliography. Second Edition, Revised.

By

This completely revised and updated edition of the bibliography of the same title, published by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Library in 1971, is a selective, partially annotated list of publications and periodical articles issued since 1970. In cooperation with HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research, the most useful and readily available studies and articles on the elderly and the handicapped have been chosen. Supplementing these entries, bibliographies grouped at the end of each section supply additional references. Addenda include those items received by the HUD Library too late to be included in the main body. Of particular importance is the series of hearings published in late 1978 by the House of Representatives' Select Committee on Aging. Taken together, they compose an up-to-date overview of the current situation of the elderly. (Author/MLF)

39ERIC ED502375: Engaging Places Research Summary. Bridging The Gap: A Synthesis Of Research Into The Supply And The Demand Of Built Environment Education In Schools

By

"Built environment education" refers to the various types of learning activity for children and young people of school age which use buildings, places and spaces as a context for learning. It covers many different kinds of built settings such as: historic and contemporary; urban and rural; and exceptional and commonplace. It also has a considerably broad remit, including pupil involvement in designing and building their school; projects focusing on the relationship between people and places; pupil exploration of their own communities and local built environments; and linking religions, cultures and places. In September 2006, the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) was commissioned to undertake two research projects which independently considered the supply side (providers) and the demand/audience side (teachers/schools) of built environment education. Both sets of research focused on three pilot regions (London, the South East and Yorkshire and the Humber). Supply side research (September 2006-February 2007) consisted of an investigation into the provision of work on offer by built environment education providers. Demand/audience side research: (March 2007-September 2007) included an overview of teachers', headteachers' and governors' views on using buildings and local places as a learning resource. Key project findings include: (1) There is a wide range of learning activity available to schools across the three regions; (2) Providers demonstrate a willingness and intent to supply schools with high quality provision, opportunities and experiences; there is also evidence of a clear demand for built environment education from schools and teachers; (3) School staff demonstrate awareness of, and enthusiasm for, built environment education and are familiar with the benefits it can bring to teaching and learning; (4) Evidence suggests a discrepancy between the remit of built environment education providers and the needs of teachers, in that providers see themselves as serving schools primarily at a national and regional level and teachers typically use providers in the local area; (5) The potential of local buildings, places and spaces to facilitate and support schools' pursuit of the five outcomes of the Every Child Matters agenda could provide an effective means of encouraging further take-up; (6) More information is needed regarding the availability of, and opportunities associated with, built environment education as well as advice and guidance relating to how to use buildings and local places can be used in teaching; (7) From the teacher perspective, the development and promotion of a single source of information, particularly if web-based, could provide a useful and effective means of supporting their engagement with built environment education; and (8) Research indicates that it is important for schools to have a practitioner or local authority advisor who can provide support, inspiration and advocacy for this way of working. ["Engaging Places" is a partnership between the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS), English Heritage, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), in association with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF--formerly DfES) and the Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC) set up by DCMS. The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) was commissioned by DCSF to undertake this research.]

45‘Deaf-Space’ In The Built School Environment: A Scoping Review Protocol

By

Suitable physical environments for school learners are well explored; however, there is little literature exploring this for d/Deaf learners. This scoping review aims to map literature that describes architectural provisions to accommodate the needs of d/Deaf learners within the school environment. Joanna Briggs Institute's methodology will be used to guide a structured search of electronic bibliographic databases, websites, and search engine GoogleScholar. Two reviewers will use inclusion and exclusion criteria based on the ‘Population-Concept-Context’ framework to conduct two levels of screening. Following data extraction, results will be presented in a tabulated format. Data synthesis will proceed through narrative analysis. This knowledge synthesis will identify spatial challenges for d/Deaf learners, and contribute to the understanding of ‘Deaf-Space’ architecture within this environment.

48How Do Changes To The Built Environment Influence Walking Behaviors? A Longitudinal Study Within A University Campus In Hong Kong.

By

This article is from International Journal of Health Geographics , volume 13 . Abstract Background: Previous studies testing the association between the built environment and walking behavior have been largely cross-sectional and have yielded mixed results. This study reports on a natural experiment in which changes to the built environment were implemented at a university campus in Hong Kong. Longitudinal data on walking behaviors were collected using surveys, one before and one after changes to the built environment, to test the influence of changes to the built environment on walking behavior. Methods: Built environment data are from a university campus in Hong Kong, and include land use, campus bus services, pedestrian network, and population density data collected from campus maps, the university developmental office, and field surveys. Walking behavior data were collected at baseline in March 2012 (n = 198) and after changes to the built environment from the same cohort of subjects in December 2012 (n = 169) using a walking diary. Geographic information systems (GIS) was used to map walking routes and built environment variables, and compare each subject’s walking behaviors and built environment exposure before and after the changes to the built environment. Walking behavior outcomes were changes in: i) walking distance, ii) destination-oriented walking, and iii) walked altitude range. Multivariable linear regression models were used to test for associations between changes to the built environment and changes in walking behaviors. Results: Greater pedestrian network connectivity predicted longer walking distances and an increased likelihood of walking as a means of transportation. The increased use of recreational (vs. work) buildings, largely located at mid-range altitudes, as well as increased population density predicted greater walking distances.Having more bus services and a greater population density encouraged people to increase their walked altitude range. Conclusions: In this longitudinal study, changes to the built environment were associated with changes in walking behaviors. Use of GIS combined with walking diaries presents a practical method for mapping and measuring changes in the built environment and walking behaviors, respectively. Additional longitudinal studies can help clarify the relationships between the built environment and walking behaviors identified in this natural experiment.

49ERIC EJ1070747: Teaching Folder Management System For The Enhancement Of Engineering And Built Environment Faculty Program

By

A strong, systematic and well-executed management system will be able to minimize and coordinate workload. A number of committees need to be developed, which are joined by the department staffs to achieve the objectives that have been set. Another important aspect is the monitoring department in order to ensure that the work done is correct and in line with the Washington Accord's requirements. A strong academic management system consists of four main sections namely activities organization and evaluation, documentation system, ongoing improvement and information sharing. This paper focuses on the importance of the third aspect, which is the documentation system. It is crucial to establish a systematic and efficient documentation system that reflects all the efforts that have been done in the program courses. The Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia ("The National University of Malaysia") has taken a number of measures in upgrading its document management. The performance of teaching folder submission has increased significantly for all departments.

50Chapter Going Beyond Energy Consumption: Digital Twins For Achieving Socio-Ecological Sustainability In The Built Environment

Digital twins have attracted much of the attention from the researchers and policy makers as a potent industry-agnostic concept to support ambitious decarbonization goals. Consequently, much of the latest research has focused on computational methods for building and connecting digital twins to monitor and measure energy consumption and resulting emissions from buildings. At the same time, it has been recognized that achieving a truly sustainable built environment goes beyond environmental sustainability and is much more complex, calling for approaches that transcend any single discipline. Initiatives such as the National Digital Twin in the UK and globally, begin to offer a long-term vision of interconnected, purpose-driven and outcome-focused digital twins, grounded in systems thinking. Such approaches recognize the economic, social and ecological layers as critical data components in these digital ecosystems for understanding the built environment as a whole. Yet, social and ecological sustainability will remain difficult to address without involving allied disciplines and those from the realms of sociology, ecology, or anthropology in a conversation about the critical data sitting at the intersections between human behavior and technological innovation. In this paper, we review and discuss the state of the art research on digital twins to identify the disciplines dominating the narrative in the context of a sustainable built environment. We unpack a techno-rationalist view that emphasizes the sole reliance on technology for problem-solving and argue that by going beyond energy consumption and carbon emissions, digital twins can facilitate a more nuanced assessment of sustainability challenges, encompassing social equity, cultural preservation, and ecological resilience
