Rhinology is a subspecialty within Otolaryngology that studies medical and surgical diseases of the nasal passages and paranasal sinuses. Rhinology conditions can be categorized into rhinosinusitis, rhinitis, inflammatory nasal masses, benign tumours, systemic diseases, nasal anatomic abnormalities, olfactory dysfunction and epistaxis [1]. Chronic rhinosinusitis alone affects 5.2% of the population in Canada and in 2007 consumed $8.6 billion healthcare resources in the United States of America [2,3]. The management of these conditions could be improved from the technological innovations that are currently being introduced into medical practice. These innovations include artificial intelligence, robotic surgery and telesurgery. Artificial intelligence systems refers to the use of computer algorithms and advanced modeling to process big data and overall automate cognitive processes [4]. Artificial intelligence is an umbrella term that includes machine learning, neural networks, computer vision, deep learning and robotics. Machine learning utilizes a diverse set of data-driven methods and algorithms to make inferences on new data based on past data [5]. These algorithms can be divided into supervised and non-supervised algorithms. Supervised algorithms require an individual to define a target attribute value (ex. treatment decision) that the algorithm is trying to predict. This algorithm category includes neural networks, which are commonly used in computed tomography (CT) studies. In contrast, unsupervised algorithms such as cluster analysis does not require a target attribute value, instead it groups data based on similar attributes. Neural networks are a subset of supervised learning, where the output of one layer of algorithms becomes the input for the next layer until the data is distilled to a perceptible output [5,6]. These models compare the actual output to the ideal output and through thousands of cycles it trains itself to minimize error between the actual and intended output [5]. These networks can be applied to computer vision (image and pattern recognition), which are currently being used to classify radiology and pathology images [5]. When more than three neural layers are used, this can be labeled as deep learning. Deep learning is formally defined as a subset of machine learning where an algorithm with multiple layers is used to identify the optimal features for classifying data without human intervention [6,7]. Lastly, robotics are used to augment and potentially succeed the physical capabilities of humans [5]. Medical robotics can be divided into three groups, passive or master-slave robots, active or autonomous robots and semiautonomous or semiactive robots. Passive robots are controlled by a human (ex. da Vinci robotic system), active robots are programmed to evaluate data from their environment and complete tasks accordingly, and semi-active robots are partially controlled by humans while the robot provides assistive guidance [6]. Artificial intelligence can be seen by the public as interesting, confusing and frightening. However, with the large amounts of heterogeneous data present in healthcare, machine learning and deep learning provides an efficient means of analyzing this data and creating clinical meaning. This has the potential to optimize medical research and aid in clinical decision making. Moreover, robotics has the potential to be applied to all areas of surgery, however they must be superior to or equal to humans in skill, cause no harm to patients or healthcare workers, be adjustable to human environments, have the capability to be cleaned and sterilized rapidly and must be affordable [6]. Medicine and surgical specialties, including Rhinology, will benefit from these technological innovations. Therefore, the objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive synopsis on the current artificial intelligence applications being used and developed in Rhinology and to identify gaps in the literature.

In recent years, the integration of AI tools into various medical domains has become increasingly prevalent, yet it presents significant challenges in understanding and classification. Our study employs an “overview of systematic reviews” design, chosen specifically to provide a broad perspective on the use of AI in clinical medicine. By systematically reviewing the application of AI across different fields, we summarize findings from numerous systematic reviews (SRs) to illustrate the current landscape of AI use. A key component of our work is the introduction of the CLASMOD-AI framework, a novel approach aimed at enhancing the reporting of information in future reviews. This framework categorizes AI tools based on crucial aspects such as input, model, data training, performance metrics, and risk of bias, promoting greater consistency and transparency in reporting.

This report presents the results of a research project about the application of automated reasoning and machine learning approaches to support the Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield/Operational Environment (IPB/IPOE) process. Analysts conducting IPB/IPOE are faced with information and cognitive overload problems. The research initiative described in this report intends on supporting IPB/IPOE analysts with Self-Improving Inference Systems (SIIS). To achieve this goal, literature and technological surveys as well as expert interviews and workshops were conducted. A functional decomposition of IPOE was also performed. Following the results from these tasks, two prototype systems were developed in order to support analysts performing IPB/IPOE.

Several models for problem solving are discussed, and the idea of a heuristic frame is developed. This concept provides a description of the evolution of problem-solving skills in terms of the growth of the number of algorithms available and increased sophistication in their use. The heuristic frame model is applied to two sets of physical problems to illustrate the components involved. Several teaching strategies related to the heuristics and to promoting students' self awareness of their developing problem solving ability are discussed. In an appendix, the problem-solving model is related to the Piagetian idea of conservation. (SD)

This review contains an overview of past and present trends in the application of what is called "artificial intelligence" in traditional face-to-face education and in distance education. The reviewed trends are illustrated with examples of research projects and results throughout the world. The first section of the review discusses intelligence in general, describing classic and modern theories of intelligence. Definitions of artificial intelligence in education are presented, with attention to these areas: (1) intelligent tutoring systems; (2) interactive learning environments; (3) virtual environments for education; (4) computer-mediated communication; (5) intelligent agents for education; (6) the World Wide Web and education; and (7) intelligent interfaces for learning support systems. Perspectives for the future of artificial intelligence in education are discussed. Nine appendixes contain a discussion of the Internet, a list of Web search engines, and other supplemental information related to artificial intelligence applications. The British Army is often praised for a particular skill in small wars or counter-insurgencies (COIN). Some attribute this to the special challenge of maintaining order across a global empire with a relatively small force; others cite the intellectual inheritance of great British military theorists and an inherent flexibility present within a small army used to adaptation. Recent scholarship has challenged this view, suggesting that the UK s record of success in COIN is inconsistent and ignores many failures. When thinking about the British record, and the validity of British ideas on how best to fight and win at COIN, it is useful to examine a less well-known conflict the war in South Arabia (better known as the Aden Emergency). Although the war was part of the decolonization of the British Empire in the 1960s, the South Arabian conflict has much in common with recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan: challenging terrain and people; intricate local politics; a de facto nation-building task; an externally-sponsored insurgency with safe havens in a neighboring state; finally, an unexpected major change in strategy-in this case to unilateral withdrawal (an exit strategy). This thesis examines the relationship between strategy, operational art and intelligence in the context of the British government s controversial decision in February 1966 to reverse its course by adopting an exit strategy with a public timeline. One of the unintended consequences of this decision was to cripple the ability of the withdrawing military to collect intelligence from the local populace. As a result of the shift in strategy, UK forces were more vulnerable and the British government less able to achieve the limited objectives of its new policy and strategy. Consequently, British forces became increasingly blind and faced greater violence from the insurgents with their intelligence organization simply overwhelmed.

The Art of Bienvenido Bones Banez By Terrance Lindall The Seraphim שְׂרָפִים in a particular plate of the Elephant Folio of my Paradise Lost have paint brushes in one hand and flames in the other. They are painting with fire. Fire, the tools of Satan in hell, is the creative force of the universe. From the first explosion of the big bang there have been worlds created out of magnificent expanding fire. God wrote the Ten Commandments with His finger in fire. I was thinking of Bienvenido Bones Banez when I painted that. Bienvenido's style I call "Fiero Electric" because he recognizes that the divine principle of creation is fire and color, and "Fiero Electric" because of Bien's striking juxtaposition of primary colors. Satanic color! One of Bien’s many remarkable ideas is that “Satan gives color to the world.” Indeed, what a dreary world if everything were nice, sweet, and beautiful. We would soon go insane. Man struggles and finds meaning in the struggles. He writes operas and stories about the struggles of love, treachery and war and paints pictures of it. Do we not find Satan’s struggle in Paradise Lost more colorful than anything in Paradise Regained. Yes, Satan excites our imagination…he causes many of our struggles and on so doing gives color to the world! And there is no greater artist than Bien in the history of the world to capture this idea. On display at the WAH Center is a major painting that was only recently shipped to the United States. It is 6 by 8 feet! It came rolled up and had to re-stretched for this exhibit. Having been rolled up it now requires relining by a professional conservator. It is a work of supreme genius that needs to be saved for future generations to wonder at. The major fiery Satanic figure has outstretched arms like Matthias Grunewald’s masterpiece of crucified Christ in the Issenheim Altarpiece. In fact there is a small pale figure of Christ with a cross between his legs on this back of Satan and a church on the back of Satan’s head. I know that Bien believes the Christian church and all major religions have been coopted by Satan for his purposes. The ribs of Satan become two horns and a mouth opens with fangs that shoot lightening.
