2Teaching Charge Coupled Devices Using Models As Part Of The Engineering Design Process At Maui Community College
By Isar Mostafanezhad, Johnny Tam, Ciril Rozic, David Harrington, Brad Jacobs, Ryan Swindle and Elisabeth Reader
The CCD Modeling Activity was designed to supplement the curriculum of the Electrical and Computing Engineering Technology program at the Maui Community College. The activity was designed to help learners understand how a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) works. A team of visiting graduate students was invited to teach an activity through the Teaching and Curriculum Collaborative (TeCC) as part of the Center for Adaptive Optics/Institute for Science and Engineer Educators Professional Development Program. One of the primary goals was to have students gain an understanding of the function of a CCD by constructing a model representing the CCD readout process. In this paper we discuss the design and implementation of the activity and the challenges we faced.

7A Unique4Ps-Based Approach To Teaching Introductory Software Engineering
Project-based learning environments are often used in the teaching of higher level software engineering courses because of their value in providing students with first-hand experience in the software engineering process; however, adapting this approach for use in the introductory course poses a number of challenges. This paper introduces a teaching methodology which exposes students who have only one software engineering course in 4-year curriculum to a special and stimulating learning environment. The method is based on the concept of the Four Ps in software engineering: people, project, product and process. Compared with using assignments and team-projects in the traditional way, the method requires all students in one class to participate in a single customized real-life project. The project is complicated and large enough to expose students to many key software development disciplines that are harder to teach through small projects; in addition, it gives students the opportunity to participate in project management. By adopting the Unified Software Development Process, the method provides a learning environment that makes it possible for computing students to efficiently learn as much fundamental software engineering knowledge and skills as is possible in one introductory software engineering course. This paper studies the learning elements of this course, including core topics in each of the four Ps, and discusses the method of actively and flexibly using these elements to design the learning environment.

8ERIC ED529901: The CCAILM Learning Model: An Instructional Model For Teaching And Learning Of Engineering Modules
By ERIC
This research report presents a new teaching and learning model in engineering classes. The proposed learning model is called the CCAILM (constructionist computer aided instructional learning model). This new model was derived from the constructionist learning theory, the media-affects-learning hypothesis and the multiple representation principle. The process of knowledge construction, when an engineering lecture is delivered and learnt using a CCAILM approach, as well as the instructional strategies and steps prescribed in the CCAILM teaching and learning environment, are also discussed in this report. 9ERIC ED446963: Innovations To Improve Teaching Quality At Escola Politecnica Of USP: Experience At Metallurgical And Materials Engineering Department.
By ERIC
The experience described in this work was conducted in a discipline at Escola Politecnica in University of Sao Paulo. This discipline has a multidisciplinary character and almost all subjects discussed during engineering course might be addressed. Also, aspects related to aptitude and attitudes can be easily trained and discussed in this discipline. An institutional regulation for final grade of disciplines at Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department (PMT) takes in account three tests and a seminar or experimental work. This institutional aspect was adapted in 1997 to approximately forty different kinds of evaluation including: group dynamics, video oriented activities, music oriented activities, experimental work and so on. This was a first trial to apply continuous evaluation at this discipline. The first two classes were very important to motivate students to participate of all proposed activities. An Aesop fable and requirements to be a good performance professional were discussed during these classes. Also, discipline program was presented and discussed at the beginning of the discipline. The introduction of these activities showed very good results. All the time students were predisposed to do activities and reports, when requested. Frequency in classes were more than 90%, indicating there were encouraged by new methodology. (Author)

10ERIC ED590279: The Interactive Surveying Instructor (ISI) For Teaching Optical-Mechanical Instrument Readings In Surveying Engineering
By ERIC
The Interactive Surveying Instructor (ISI) is an extension of the work developed by Garbanzo and Lara (2018), who created a web 2.0 app for teaching differential leveling in surveying engineering. Two improvements were done to enhance the user experience and include surveying equipment that is important in the first stages of the engineering training: developing a new web interface using bootstrap 4.0.0 and a module for optical-mechanical theodolites. Often, these students have problems to practice on the field because they need a peer to assist them with the equipment, this situation can restrict their learning. ISI was developed using PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and it is a light web application designed to simulate equipment readings. Furthermore, the readings made by students are stored in a database to analyze them. ISI is operational but still is not suitable for mobile screens. This adaptation to mobiles is the next step in this project. [For the complete proceedings, see ED590269.]

11ERIC ED608572: Using Cooperative Teaching Techniques In Engineering Courses. The Jigsaw Case
By ERIC
Students everywhere are increasingly expecting to learn content that is immediately relevant to the degree they are preparing for. The negative implication of this is that they generally lack the motivation to study the fundamentals and understand in-depth material that they may not yet see the use for. Based on our previous experience with inquiry-based learning methodologies, and given the course content and the number of students in class we felt that a collaborative inquiry-based approach would encourage students to actively participate in their learning, motivate them to learn differently than in traditional ways, and inspire them to share information with their classmates. Results using the Jigsaw methodology show that some of the more positive effects were teamwork and "being forced to understand and prepare well enough to be able to explain clearly to your colleagues". On the negative side, some students found the number of presentations to be excessive and some thought that they knew less about the material that they had not prepared themselves than they would have known had they followed a traditional teaching method. [For the complete proceedings, see ED608557.]

12ERIC EJ1076103: Embedding Context In Teaching Engineering Design
By ERIC
Understanding the global, societal, environmental and economic (GSEE) context of a product, process or system is critical to an engineer's ability to design and innovate. The already packed curricula in engineering programs provide few occasions to offer meaningful experiences to address this issue, and most departments delegate this requirement to an early cornerstone or later capstone design experience as a result, making these courses an ineffective "catch all". To address this challenge, we utilize the paradigm of "product archaeology," to understand the decisions that led to a product's development. Product archaeology is defined as the process of reconstructing the lifecycle of a product--the customer requirements, design specifications, and manufacturing processes used to create it. By considering products, processes and systems as designed artifacts with a history rooted in their development, we embed GSEE context as a central component in developing design solutions. In the current work, students focus primarily on the useful life of products and their design solutions, rather than on product end-of-life issues. Specifically, in our work we have implemented several approaches to integrate contextual thinking related to GSEE dimensions into a senior level engineering design course. Following Kolb's model of experiential learning and an instructional framework adapted for product archaeology (inclusive of evaluate--explain--prepare--excavate activities) we have restructured the course to embed specific and targeted reflection, dissection, and analysis activities so that student teams effectively address the GSEE factors in their design solutions. This paper provides the theoretical framework of our instructional approach, describes the specific didactic activities we implemented, and summarizes results from our qualitative analysis. Overall, our results suggest that the use of product dissection and GSEE activities is an effective way to equip students with new tools to understand contextual, technical, and functional properties of their design projects.

13ERIC ED537363: A Case Study: Teaching Engineering Concepts In Science. Research In Engineering And Technology Education
By ERIC
This study was conducted to describe a teacher developed high school engineering course, to identify teaching strategies used in the process of delivering math and science literacy through this course, to identify challenges and constraints that occurred during its development and delivery, and to describe the strategies that were used to overcome those obstacles. A case study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with the engineering instructor at Benilde-St. Margaret's in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. In addition, the researcher conducted classroom observations and reviewed instructional materials, teacher lesson plans, and teacher journals. Themes that developed regarding the strategies used to deliver this particular course identified that concepts created its platform for delivery, curricular trial and error was at work, science and engineering competitions were leveraged as a basis for learning activities, project based learning and teaching were employed, there was a clear emphasis on creative thought and work, and the teacher served as a guide rather than the sole "sage". Themes developed regarding the identification of challenges and constraints that occurred during the development and delivery of this engineering course were assessment of student learning was dubious and elusive and stakeholders tended to be uneasy with this new pedagogy. Lastly, themes developed regarding the strategies used to overcome these obstacles identified financial and instructional support through business partnership and administrative support as being critical. Appended are: (1) Consent to Participate In UW-Stout Approved Research; and (2) Modules. (Contains 1 figure.)

19ERIC EJ1081454: Teaching Engineering Graduate Online Students In The U.S. From Pakistan--A Case Study
By ERIC
Outsourcing is seen from various points of views by individuals in different industries. When it comes to educating science and technology students, and for that matter, students of any discipline, up until recently, outsourcing was not a possibility. With the recent advances in computer and network technology, it is now possible to teach a live online distance-learning course from anywhere around the world. The need for the instructor and the students to be physically present in a common classroom is eliminated. In an on-line course, students and teacher get the opportunity to interact with each other. The computer-based distance learning approach is still in its relative infancy. But since the teaching and learning is done online, via the use of computers connected to inter-connected networks and satellites, the need to be geographically co-located does not exist any longer. The instructor and the students can be physically distributed at various locations, around the city, around the country, or around the world and still be able to teach and learn from each other as if they were present together in the same classroom. Since the medium of instruction is computers, the instructors and students can be outsourced. The flip side of the argument is that since the instructor is not physically present in the same room with the students, they do not get to interact with each other face to face. The instructor can continue to derive a complex mathematical equation without realizing that a student has walked away from their computer. This paper explores the positives and negatives of distance learning distributed education. Advantages and disadvantages of DL are discussed and a few solutions to the challenges, experienced by the instructors, are addressed. The research is based on the author's experience of teaching online courses from within the city, across the states, and finally across the continents. Amongst other findings, the author discovered that when teaching an online distance learning class, distance is not a factor. While teaching online classes, the author travelled across different cities, states, and internationally and the students did not realize that the instructor was out of town and could not meet with them in the office after class.

20ERIC ED449005: A Dynamic Action In The Engineering Teaching.
By ERIC
The main proposal of this paper is to present research performed during a practical subject in the last year of the electrical engineer undergraduate course, emphasis in electrotechnics, at the Universidade Sao Judas Tadeu. Several activities are developed to provide the students variable and continued information about their performance in many important engineering skills, like leadership, vivacity, dynamism, reliability, speech, and synthesis capacity. Under the concept of feedback control systems, these techniques are made to reach the goal of meaningful engineering education. In this case, the system in point may be understood as "system learning" and has as a main action shield an informative and critical retroaction, not only at a technical level but also a competency one. The structure used is called canonical form of a feedback system. Under this structure, many of the system's aspects are shown, with parts being related, diagrammed, and discussed. In the end, some statistical results gathered between 1995-1997 will be shown, and a joint evaluation will be possible (Contains 16 references.) (YDS)

25ERIC EJ992130: Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Graduate Teaching Assistants Teaching Self-Efficacy
By ERIC
The graduate experience is a critical time for development of academic faculty, but often there is little preparation for teaching during the graduate career. Teaching self-efficacy, an instructor's belief in his or her ability to teach students in a specific context, can help to predict teaching behavior and student achievement, and can be used as a measure of graduate students' development as instructors. An instrument measuring teaching self-efficacy of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) was developed from a general university faculty teaching instrument to the specific teaching context of STEM GTAs. Construct and face validity, measurement reliability, and factor structure of the instrument were determined from survey data of 253 STEM GTAs at six universities. STEM GTA teaching self-efficacy correlated to various measures of GTA professional development and teaching experience. Implications and applications for faculty involved in GTA professional development, supervision, and research are discussed. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)

26Convergence And Translation: Attitudes To Inter-professional Learning And Teaching Of Creative Problem-solving Among Medical And Engineering Students And Staff.
By Spoelstra, Howard, Stoyanov, Slavi, Burgoyne, Louise, Bennett, Deirdre, Sweeney, Catherine, Drachsler, Hendrik, Vanderperren, Katrien, Van Huffel, Sabine, McSweeney, John, Shorten, George, O'Flynn, Siun, Cantillon-Murphy, Padraig and O'Tuathaigh, Colm
This article is from BMC Medical Education , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Healthcare worldwide needs translation of basic ideas from engineering into the clinic. Consequently, there is increasing demand for graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply interdisciplinary medicine/engineering approaches to the development of novel solutions for healthcare. The literature provides little guidance regarding barriers to, and facilitators of, effective interdisciplinary learning for engineering and medical students in a team-based project context. Methods: A quantitative survey was distributed to engineering and medical students and staff in two universities, one in Ireland and one in Belgium, to chart knowledge and practice in interdisciplinary learning and teaching, and of the teaching of innovation. Results: We report important differences for staff and students between the disciplines regarding attitudes towards, and perceptions of, the relevance of interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and the role of creativity and innovation. There was agreement across groups concerning preferred learning, instructional styles, and module content. Medical students showed greater resistance to the use of structured creativity tools and interdisciplinary teams. Conclusions: The results of this international survey will help to define the optimal learning conditions under which undergraduate engineering and medicine students can learn to consider the diverse factors which determine the success or failure of a healthcare engineering solution.

28ERIC EJ1076118: Middle Grades Teachers' Understanding And Teaching Of The Central Ideas Of The Engineering Design Process
By ERIC
The research reported on in this paper addresses the problem of preparing Massachusetts middle school mathematics, science, and computer teachers to teach engineering. The results presented here are part of a larger dissertation study investigating six urban public school teachers and their subject matter and pedagogical content knowledge teachers know and develop as they taught an engineering unit. The results discussed in this paper focused on the teachers' instruction and knowledge of the central aspects of the engineering design process (EDP)--the purpose of the EDP, that the EDP is a cyclical, iterative process, and that the EDP fosters communication. The analysis of the videotaped classroom observation data revealed that the teachers as a group covered the central ideas regarding 1. "Purpose of the EDP" and 2. "EDP as a cyclical process" quite well. Every teacher touched upon at least one of the sub-ideas for these two central ideas. The teachers did not cover 3. "EDP for fostering communication" well. Only Frieda and Monica conveyed anything regarding this idea to their students. This paper explores each central idea and the teachers' understandings of them as expressed through their explanations in the classroom observations and follow-up interviews.

29The Testing Show: Teaching Software Engineering
By The Testing Show
For many years, Computer Science was the only way, educationally speaking, to learn about methodologies related to programming software and building large scale applications. Software Engineering grew out of the need to have a more streamlined methodology, and our guest Robert Sabourin of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada has been at the forefront of helping developing those Software Engineering courses as well as teaching them to up and coming software engineers.

36ERIC EJ1058156: Design-Build-Write: Increasing The Impact Of English For Specific Purposes Learning And Teaching In Aeronautical Engineering Education Through Multiple Intelligences Task Design
By ERIC
This article presents an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) task developed for teaching aeronautical engineering students. The task Design-Build-Write rests on the assumption that engineering students are skilled at mathematical reasoning, problem solving, drawing and constructing. In Gardner's 1983 Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory, these skills strongly correspond to the logical-mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic and spatial intelligences. The current task combines creativity, innovation and problem solving with the description of technical concepts. An enthusiastic learner response in class suggests that the target group of aeronautical engineering students could be engaged and captivated by this assignment.

37ERIC ED409584: Developing A Writing Program In Engineering: Teaching Writing To Teach Engineering Literacies.
By ERIC
A discipline-specific writing center is the nucleus of a writing-in-the-disciplines (WID) program in engineering, in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of South Carolina. As a writing program, the writing center serves student writers and faculty in ECE and integrates writing consultation into the engineering curriculum, especially into ECE's sequence of five mandatory lab courses. This approach to creating and maintaining a WID program grew out of theory, research, and experience in the fields of composition and rhetoric and engineering education. The program was designed in the contexts of theories of literacy or language acquisition as central to the process by which students become members of a professional, or discourse community. A major goal of the program was the development of pedagogical methods, grounded in theory, that would support students as they acquired the literacies of engineering. (Contains 4 references.) 38ERIC ED540039: Decisions About Teaching: What Factors Do Engineering Faculty Consider? Research Brief
By ERIC
Decision making is central to the teaching of engineering, however, little has been written about the teaching of engineering educators. The authors believe that engineering educators can benefit from insights into how to better prepare for teaching decisions since they are faced with teaching-related decisions on a daily basis. The findings from this study illustrate that time can be a valuable lens for showing the complexity of engineering educator decisions. Although participants generally acknowledged time as constraints or limitations, some participants' responses suggested creative solutions to overcome time as a limitation. The authors categorized these creative approaches along three dimensions: (1) Faculty-centered approaches; (2) Student-centered approaches; and (3) Content-centered approaches.

44ERIC EJ1076131: Efficacy Of An Online Resource For Teaching Interpersonal Problem Solving Skills To Women Graduate Students In Engineering
By ERIC
Interpersonal problem solving skills allow engineers to prevent interpersonal difficulties more effectively and to manage conflict, both of which are critical to successful participation on teams. This research provides evidence that the "Career"WISE online learning environment can improve those skills among women in engineering graduate programs. In a randomized controlled trial, N = 128 female doctoral students were randomly assigned to treatment and wait-list control (WLC) groups; treatment consisted of interacting for at least five hours with an online learning environment with comprehensive instruction in problem-solving applied to common interpersonal situations in the academy. A scenario- based assessment instrument measured participants' ability to describe how they would apply that problem solving to a fictional scenario, and a rubric was used to score the responses. Results showed that treatment group members had better knowledge of interpersonal problem solving steps and were better able to describe how they would apply problem-solving skills to a relevant scenario.
