In less than a week, 33 individuals will graduate from Montgomery County and Fire Rescue's training academy. Before they walk across the stage, however, they are putting their skills to the test in what officials call the "hot mess test." "What that stands for is hands on training mock emergency scenarios," said Pete Piringer, spokesperson for MCFRS. "This is the culmination of our fire and rescue recruit training." According to Piringer, recruits go through more than 20 weeks of intense training before becoming firefighters. The "hot mess" is a scenario-based inclusion of their training at the academy. "There are about 30 different scenarios," said MCFRS Chief Scott Goldstein. "There are structure fires scenarios, we've had medical scene scenarios, and a whole litany of scenarios that combines that 26 weeks of training they've had." When Jim Wangensteen brainstormed a summer school activity for the Highview Alternative students to use the woodshop, he knew building birdhouses just wouldn't do. Instead, he approached Urban Boatbuilders about building a canoe and using math skills to do it. "The goal was to get some hands-on measuring, applied math, and geometry," says Wangensteen. So, the 40 students and their supervisors made three 17-foot canoes in three weeks, plus a few wooden paddles. "I know they are going to float, but we are going to prove to the students they are going to float," says Wangensteen. On the last day of the project, students arrived to a gray, windy overcast day at French Regional Park in Plymouth for a different kind of test: they were going to test to see if the boats they built would actually float. "I was a little scared, to be honest," said Katie Devine. Before getting into the water, instructors and students recapped the project and talked about the skills they learned. "I've never done any wood working before, so this is awesome," says Wyatt Bennewise, a senior. "This opened up a lot for me." Even though some of the students had never been in a canoe before, they smiled and laughed to discover all of the canoes actually did float. "There's actually some algebra in here," laughed Katie Devine. "How often do you get to build a wooden canoe?" Urban Boatbuilders enthusiastically tested out the canoes with the students. They say the three-week program was a fast but successful one. "There are some solid skills like learning math with hands-on practices, but really it's all about teamwork, cooperation, communication, a sense of accomplishment, and a sense of pride that they can turn lumber into a boat that floats and can take out on the water," says Marc Hosmer, executive director of Urban Boatbuilders. There were a few spills on the choppy water, but students came away with a sense of pride that they built a canoe and floated it too. "I can't believe I built something that can float and go," says Wyatt Bennewise. It's still up in the air what will happen with the canoes that the students built. Working closely with teachers and volunteer mentors, student teams have six weeks to design, build, program and test a robot that can perform a series of pre-determined tasks. The event was held at Virginia Commonwealth Universitys Siegel Center. Regional winners will compete in the FIRST world championships in Atlanta next month.

More than 20 students from our Environmental Science Workshop put their engineering skills to the test during the 19th annual Egg Drop competition this week. The event, hosted by the Public Works and Utilities Department and Public Library, is held annually as part of National Engineers Week. A total of 33 people, including City staff, registered to participate. Students were tasked with building a container that would protect their eggs from a 60-foot drop from the top of the Civic Plaza. This year’s winner was Daniel Guijosa. The young boy beat out professional engineers with a drop device that kept his egg intact and landed only a foot away from the target. She died in 1913 after having poetry published in periodicals in several countries and collections of her work published in book form. This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for January 29, 2012.<br><br>In 1892 the opportunity of a lifetime came to this young versifier, when Frank Yeigh, the president of the Young Liberals' Club, of Toronto, conceived the idea of having an evening of Canadian literature, at which all available Canadian authors should be guests and read from their own works.<br><br>Among the authors present on this occasion was Pauline Johnson, who contributed to the programme one of her compositions, entitled "A Cry from an Indian Wife"; and when she recited without text this much-discussed poem, which shows the Indian's side of the North-West Rebellion, she was greeted with tremendous applause from an audience which represented the best of Toronto's art, literature and culture. She was the only one on the programme who received an encore, and to this she replied with one of her favourite canoeing poems.<br><br>The following morning the entire press of Toronto asked why this young writer was not on the platform as a professional reader; while two of the dailies even contained editorials on the subject, inquiring why she had never published a volume of her poems, and insisted so strongly that the public should hear more of her, that Mr. Frank Yeigh arranged for her to give an entire evening in Association Hall within two weeks from the date of her first appearance.
