The Personalizing Educational Prescriptions (PEP) Project has two main objectives: (1) the improvement of the diagnostic process with emphasis on the development of personalized educational prescriptions for all pupils; and (2) the improvement and expansion of multimedia services for all pupils. This report describes project goals, approaches, and the team involved. A final summary report, as well as changes in retrospect, is included. (For related documents, see TM 001 160, 364-374.) (MS)

The article addresses issues related to the methodology of intensifying self-development process when performing design and settlement works on the "Machine Parts" course for the students studying in such areas of training as "Technology" and "Vocational Education" with the use of computer technologies. At the same time, there are formulated the required pedagogical conditions that must be provided to all participants of the educational process, and accordingly, there are disclosed methodological aspects of the design and settlement work performance by means of specialized computer software. This in turn makes it possible to intensify the students' self-development process during the study of the "Machine parts" course. To succeed in the intensification of the students' self-development process when performing design and settlement works on the "Machine Parts" course, there should be develop appropriate pedagogical conditions. The most effective implementation of this methodology may be performed through the usage of specialized computer software. There is provided a technology of designing two-stage parallel-shaft reduction gear unit based on specialized computer software Compass 3D. Implementation of specialized computer software when performing a course project on "Machine Parts" allows intensifying the self-development quality of students within the educational process.

Purification of cellulose is one of the most important steps in the production of nitrocellulose for explosives. However, it generates highly polluting wastewater. In this study, nitrocellulose industry wastewater (leachate) was characterized and treated chemically and biologically. Untreated leachate had a pH of 12.4 ± 0.5, color of 27,065 ± 879 units, chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 7,615 ± 252 mg/L, biological oxygen demand (BOD) of 4,413 ± 194 mg/L, total organic carbon (TOC) content of 2,455 ± 158 mg/L, total solids of 8,613 ± 232 mg/L, fixed solids of 3,845 ± 103 mg/L, and volatile solids of 4,768 ± 129 mg/L and was toxic to Escherichia coli and Artemia salina. Industrial-scale chemical treatment followed by pilot-scale biological treatment reduced COD by 97%, BOD by 99%, and TOC by 97% and eliminated toxicity.

The designs for measuring the effectiveness of personalized educational prescriptions in a pilot second-grade classroom for the first and second years are presented. Academic and behavioral difficulties are often co-morbid, a co-occurrence that is likely due to bi-directional and reciprocal interactions between behavior and learning. There is evidence that interventions provided within tiered systems of support that target mathematics skills or behavior have been associated with improved student outcomes in their respective domains. However, large scale evaluations have revealed that schools struggle to implement tiered intervention systems with quality and consistency, improvements in one domain (i.e., mathematics or behavior) have not been reliably associated with collateral improvements in the other, and previous efforts to merge tiered mathematics and behavior intervention systems can often be characterized as representing combinations of supports rather than cohesive integration of mathematics and behavior interventions. There is a need to identify strategies that support students’ academic engagement, a self-regulatory behavior that is directly tied to learning, that can be integrated within mathematics interventions and multi-tiered systems of support in efficient and cohesive ways. As such, this study will investigate the following research questions: (1) For 2nd grade students with mathematics difficulties, what is the benefit of integrating behavior self-regulation strategies within Tier 2 mathematics interventions on students’ mathematics and behavior outcomes? (2) For students that demonstrate adequate response to Tier 2 intervention, what is the benefit of integrating behavior self-regulation strategies into core instruction (i.e., Tier 1)? (3) For students that demonstrate inadequate response to Tier 2 intervention, what is the benefit of integrating behavior self-regulation strategies within intensified and customized mathematics intervention? (4) To what extent does improvement in behavior self-regulation mediate the effects of intervention on students’ mathematics outcomes?

The Gross Motor Performance Screening Test was designed to aid the classroom teacher in obtaining specific information about the child's physical abilities. The test includes items which have been found to measure the various factors of physical fitness. It also includes items to measure skills important to the child and adult. Included also are items to measure the relative performance of different areas of the body, i.e., legs as compared to trunk and arms. From the results of the tests, it is possible to prepare a profile which shows the areas of strength and weakness in terms of physical performance. The Gross Motor Performance Screening Test is suggested as a rather comprehensive screening test of important physical abilities of elementary school children. Detailed descriptions of the exercises and equipment involved, as well as suggested remedial activities, are included. We investigate an intensification mechanism for the magnetic field near the base of the solar convection zone that does not rely on differential rotation. Such mechanism in addition to differential rotation has been suggested by studies of flux emergence, which typically require field strength in excess of those provided by differential rotation alone. We study here a process in which potential energy of the superadiabatically stratified convection zone is converted into magnetic energy. This mechanism, know as explosion of magnetic flux tubes, has been previously studied in the thin flux tube approximation as well as two-dimensional MHD simulations, we expand the investigation to three-dimensional MHD simulations. Our main result is that enough intensification can be achieved in a three-dimensional magnetic flux sheet as long as the spatial scale of the imposed perturbation normal to the magnetic field is sufficiently large. When this spatial scale is small, the flux sheet tends to rise toward the surface, resulting in a significant decrease of the magnetic field amplification.
