In workflows and business processes, there are often security requirements on both the data, i.e. confidentiality and integrity, and the process, e.g. separation of duty. Graphical notations exist for specifying both workflows and associated security requirements. We present an approach for formally verifying that a workflow satisfies such security requirements. For this purpose, we define the semantics of a workflow as a state-event system and formalise security properties in a trace-based way, i.e. on an abstract level without depending on details of enforcement mechanisms such as Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). This formal model then allows us to build upon well-known verification techniques for information flow control. We describe how a compositional verification methodology for possibilistic information flow can be adapted to verify that a specification of a distributed workflow management system satisfies security requirements on both data and processes.

Abstract Background: Ensuring that data collected through national health information systems are of sufficient quality for meaningful interpretation is a challenge in many resource-limited countries. An assessment was conducted to identify strengths and weaknesses of the health data management and reporting systems that capture and transfer routine monitoring and evaluation (M&E) data in Botswana. Methods: This was a descriptive, qualitative assessment. In-depth interviews were conducted at the national (n = 27), district (n = 31), and facility/community (n = 71) levels to assess i) M&E structures, functions, and capabilities; ii) indicator definitions and reporting guidelines; iii) data collection forms and tools; iv) data management processes; and v) links with the national reporting system. A framework analysis was conducted using ATLAS.ti v6.1. Results: Health programs generally had standardized data collection and reporting tools and defined personnel for M&E responsibilities at the national and district levels. Best practices unique to individual health programs were identified and included a variety of relatively low-resource initiatives such as attention to staffing patterns, making health data more accessible for evidence-based decision-making, developing a single source of information related to indicator definitions, data collection tools, and management processes, and utilization of supportive supervision visits to districts and facilities. Weakness included limited ownership of M&E-related duties within facilities, a lack of tertiary training programs to build M&E skills, few standard practices related to confidentiality and document storage, limited dissemination of indicator definitions, and limited functionality of electronic data management systems. Conclusions: Addressing fundamental M&E system issues, further standardization of M&E practices, and increasing health services management responsiveness to time-sensitive information are critical to sustain progress related to health service delivery in Botswana. In addition to high-resource initiatives, such as investments in electronic medical record systems and tertiary training programs, there are a variety of low-resource initiatives, such as regular data quality checks, that can strengthen national health information systems. Applying best practices that are effective within one health program to data management and reporting systems of other programs is a practical approach for strengthening health informatics and improving data quality.

To date, little progress has been made toward the establishment of scientific procedures by which a military manager can evaluate complex cybernetic systems such as management information systems. To provide a methodology yielding quantitative results which may assist a commander and his staff in this analysis, it is proposed thai: management information systems be evaluated as a whole by a technique defined as the semantic differential. Each characteristic of the system evaluated is compared to a standard or reference characteristic desired in a well designed system and a value is assigned based on the closeness of the comparison.

Microcomputer based database management systems can reduce training times and error rates on administrative tasks. Workers in many organizations could use the assistance of a microcomputer-based management information system. However, adequate system design and development requires an in-depth knowledge of the tasks to be automated, and can require hundreds, even thousands, of hours to complete. Often, technicians assigned to a work area do not have the knowledge or time to devote to the design and development of an information system. One such work area is the Equipment Management Section in the Air Force base supply organization. The purpose of this study was to apply principles of database management to the management of equipment items, with the ultimate goal being a reduction in error rates and training times. The study was conducted using the seven stages of information systems design discussed in Analysis and Design of Information Systems by Senn. These stages require a thorough examination of the problem and problem environment prior to design and development of the information system. Accordingly, five research questions designed to help the researcher gain a thorough understanding of the Equipment Management Section and the environment in which it functions were asked and answered. Then, a management information system was designed, developed, and tested. The management information system is called the Equipment Management Information System (EMIS).

While online systems are an essential component of distance learning, they can also play a critical role in improving the delivery of activities in a traditional laboratory setting. The quality and effectiveness of online course delivery is often compared to equivalent face-to-face alternatives. In our approach, we have harnessed what we feel to be the best of both delivery methods. We have developed a web-based system with some novel characteristics for use in a face-to-face laboratory-based Management Information Systems course. To assess its impact, we surveyed 110 students where approximately half completed the lab using our web-based system while the other half completed a paper-based equivalent. The promising results have encouraged us to develop further experiments to measure student performance as well as the impact of video versus text in presenting activity instructions.

Although many IS programs nationwide use capstone courses in the major, this paper reports on the use of an upper division Management Information Systems (MIS) class as a general education requirements (GER) capstone. The class is a core requirement for all majors in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program at the University of Alaska Anchorage, which includes the MIS major. The BBA program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The explosive developments in information technology have both economic and cultural impacts on society, and often lead to ongoing debates. In dealing with the impact of technology on society, the capstone class challenges students to integrate GER knowledge, business and their major-specific knowledge, and IT knowledge. Students must demonstrate skills across five dimensions: 1) knowledge integration, 2) effective communication (oral and in writing), 3) critical thinking and problem solving, 4) information literacy, and 5) quantitative perspectives. The five GER dimensions are assessed using a research project and a series of four hands-on projects (information literacy, database management, data mining, and decision support). The research project is based around a debate on topics relating to the impact of technology on society, and challenges students across all five dimensions. The hands-on projects focus more on information literacy, critical thinking and quantitative perspectives. Assessment data collected over the past five years (spring 2007 to spring 2011) show that a majority of students (75% or more in recent years) consistently achieve passing scores across the five GER dimensions.

The differentiation between efficiency and effectiveness in evaluating the performance of institutions of higher learning is examined and the role of management information systems in the decision-making processes of such institutions is explored. While efficiency is primarily concerned with cost minimization concepts, effectiveness is concerned with the achievement of organizational goals. Management information systems--which gather data and organize them into meaningful, timely flows of information for the decision-making process--must consider the characteristics of amount, form, and flow of information, as well as the effectiveness and efficiency criteria of successful decisions. If it is accepted that colleges do in fact have an impact on student outcomes and are concerned with how they contribute to those outcomes, then it is appropriate to consider how data about such outcomes can be included in the information systems used by the colleges in making decisions. The data bases used must include data relevant to the defined student outcome goals and objectives of the institution. Several efforts made to develop data bases that do include information relevant to student outputs are described. A management information system that incorporates student outcomes has been developed which may make it possible for the academic decision-making process, as well as future evaluations and accountability studies, to address directly a more comprehensive group of efficiency and effectiveness criteria. The Management Information and Decision Support Environment (MIDSE) is a research activity to build and test a prototype of a generic human interface on the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Information Network (CIN). The existing interfaces were developed specifically to support operations rather than the type of data which management could use. The diversity of the many interfaces and their relative difficulty discouraged occasional users from attempting to use them for their purposes. The MIDSE activity approached this problem by designing and building an interface to one JSC data base - the personnel statistics tables of the NASA Personnel and Payroll System (NPPS). The interface was designed against the following requirements: generic (use with any relational NOMAD data base); easy to learn (intuitive operations for new users); easy to use (efficient operations for experienced users); self-documenting (help facility which informs users about the data base structure as well as the operation of the interface); and low maintenance (easy configuration to new applications). A prototype interface entitled the JSC Management Information Systems (JSCMIS) was produced. It resides on CIN/PROFS and is available to JSC management who request it. The interface has passed management review and is ready for early use. Three kinds of data are now available: personnel statistics, personnel register, and plan/actual cost.

Supply squadron training monitors have to monitor, maintain, and schedule large numbers of base and squadron personnel for many different training requirements. Included in these training requirements are customer block training, ancillary training, on-the-job training, mobility training, and various other unit-level miscellaneous training areas. The old method of managing these requirements via cards and manually generated rosters has become obsolete. One purpose of this thesis was to search for a training management information system that would alleviate the time-consuming tasks associated with training management. A second objective was, if no satisfactory system could be found, to design a system to meet the needs of the supply training monitors. Extensive interviews were performed with supply training monitors and MAJCOM training managers in search of a system already in existence and gathering information for the possible development of such a system. Since no satisfactory system could be found, a supply training management system was designed and programmed in dBase III Plus. The resulting system was successfully evaluated and should provide the supply community with a usable training management tool. Keywords: Database management, Theses.
