The adption of the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) as a guideline in Malaysian English language education has led the Ministry of Education to replace locally-developed English textbooks with a selection of imported titles. While considering the significance of intercultural skills in the English curriculum, there is a need to look into the aspect of relevance in using imported texts to suit local cultural demands. This study is dual focal in nature; it investigated not only the impacts of cultural elements embedded in imported textbooks on Malaysian students' attitude but also gathered their perception on the aspect through survey research. For the purpose of this study, it specifies on the use of English Plus 1 -- an imported textbook, published by Oxford University Press. A questionnaire which was adopted from Xiao (2010), was then distributed to 39 Malaysian pupils of suburban Chinese-type primary schools in Perak who were selected using a convenience sampling technique. The findings indicated that the use of English Plus 1 has impacted pupils' attitude where it was observed that their perception towards learning English became more negative due to the focus of the textbooks inclines towards a culture that was not familiar to Malaysians. The implications derived from this study suggest teachers' flexibility at adopting a range of teaching approaches that might also need to be creative in its nature in order to impart cultural information to the young learners. Simultaneously, a more pro-active solution could be taken at the administrative level by carefully scrutinizing the cultural elements embedded in imported texts to adopt cultural suitability for young learners. 2The Effectiveness Of Apps For Second Language Learning In Primary School: A Systematic Review And A Metanalysis
By Eugenio Trotta
Application programs (apps) are used in many educational areas for learning. The aim of our systematic review and metanalysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of these tools for second language learning in primary school students. The study is conducted according to the Prisma 2020 Guidelines on Web of Science, Pubmed, EBSCOHost (including PsycArticles, PsycInfo, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection), and Scopus databases, without time limits. We include studies with a control group and with pre- and post-intervention outcome measures of second learning acquisition.

The present contribution is situated in the framework of a broad government project (entitled Pacte pour un Enseignement d'Excellence) and is specifically devoted to the learning and teaching of modern languages. Our group has been working on the collection, selection, and validation of innovative tools for foreign language learning targeting all levels of proficiency in compulsory education. The present paper reports on a case study that addresses reading strategies outside the classroom for Dutch as a foreign language at A1 level and using a mobile hunt in the Hergé Museum4 (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium). The intended outcomes of our case study include (1) the promotion of mobile and classroom Open Educational Practices (OEPs) for L2 reading, (2) the development of in-service teachers' and learners' digital literacy skills (including among others the co-construction of Open Educational Resources (OERs) and reflective practices on image rights), and (3) the creation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and communities of practice. The Actionbound mobile app was used for the mobile hunt. The participants involved in the case study include three researchers, one teacher trainer, 11 pre-service Teachers (psTs) and two classroom groups of Dutch learners (fifth year of primary school). The study setup (including both the teacher training aspects and the activities) is detailed and illustrated, together with the suggestions that emerged from the questionnaires and follow-up focus group discussions. 5ERIC ED499175: Determining An Effective Interactive Multimedia Arabic Language Courseware For Malaysian Primary School Children: An Alternative Paradigm For Learning In The Classroom
By ERIC
The prime purpose of this experimental research was to determine whether learning Arabic as a foreign language can be effectively enhanced through traditional methodology. As such, this research carefully investigated and critically analyzed the effectiveness of the traditional paradigm in teaching Arabic as a foreign language to 3rd grade primary school children in Malaysia. In this study the researcher applied a multi level approach of quantitative and qualitative methods in carrying out the investigation. In this inquiry the Arabic Language was taught in a purely traditional setting of face to face learning to 41 students of Sekolah Taman Setia Wangsa Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The course contents were taken from unit four of the Arabic book of the school syllabus. The Arabic class teacher and 40 school teachers of the above mentioned school were chosen to give their feedback about the traditional methodology of teaching Arabic Language. Instruments used to collect data were (i) Pre-Test & Post-Test that consist of six sections with six questions each. The types of questions include filling the blanks, one to one matching, writing the missing words, true or false and writing the numbers (ii) A pre-determined checklist was used by the researcher to evaluate students' reactions, facial expression, satisfaction and motivation in the classroom (iii) similar pre-determined checklist also used to examine instructor's fidelity and wakefulness of methodological breakthrough in teaching Arabic as a foreign language in the classroom. Results from pre and post test indicated that there were some improvements in the post-test. More students are in good (12.5%) and average (7.4%) categories compared to their pre-test and less students (19.5%) in fail category after six weeks of the Arabic lessons. The mean score of the pre-test was 52.44% while the mean score for the post-test was noted at 59.17%. There is a difference of 6.73 marks between the pre and the post-test. Even thoughthe difference is seemingly quite small, the t-test analysis designates that the gain score is fairly significant, with t (41) = -2.872, p less than 0.05. Results also indicated that majority of the students had prior knowledge of the Arabic language. This is conspicuous from their marks. Students in traditional environment performed educationally but not significantly. Evaluation and questionnaires marked that learners' perception about content delivery were not so encouraging for the traditional methodology. Learners were not motivated to learn and continue learning the Arabic Language in the class. The Class observation also indicated that the quality of instruction needs critical attention. (Contains 5 tables and 3 notes.) [Abstract modified to meet ERIC guidelines.]
