China aims to realize the aspiration of sustainable development using the Circular Economy (CE) policy which, apart from other objectives, aims to minimize raw material extraction and preserve natural resources. While CE can be an important policy tool to promote more sustainable development trajectories, in practice it does not always avoid or mitigate adverse impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services caused by resource extraction and infrastructure development. Here we review the current status of biodiversity protection and CE policy in China, highlighting some of their challenges. We then explore the prospects for market-based biodiversity offsets to address the current shortcomings in existing CE policy. Finally, we propose a conceptual model that incorporates a commitment to no-net-loss mitigation into the overall CE strategy to expand the use of biodiversity offsets in China and to remove some of the deficiencies by involving private enterprises in conservation efforts. This model can be used to analyze a set of parameters for comparing different offsets against one another. We propose that such an integrative framework can help CE policy achieve the intended goal of decoupling economic growth from impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services in China. Important next steps are the implementation of case studies for target industries and ecosystems to demonstrate the synergy between CE and biodiversity offsets and evaluate on-the-ground effectiveness of the proposed integration by adapting our framework.

This curriculum module offers concrete and specific examples for instructors who wish to integrate the films of Yasujiro Ozu of Japan and Zhang Yimou from China into film studies courses. Through this module, students should learn to compare and contrast conventional screen space, color, and editing to alternative forms. By becoming more familiar with Asian examples of film making, students should be able to articulate, discuss critically, and demonstrate the differences between Hollywood and alternative Asian styles. Included in this module is a list for audiovisual support and resources, step by step instructions for time allocation, goals and student objectives and content and teaching strategies. Pre-test and post-test assessments are provided along with discussion questions and additional activities. A detailed annotated bibliography provides a rich review of books on Asian film and cultural negotiation. Research suggests that the current division between reading and writing instruction for Chinese English as a Second Language (ESL) students, the lack of authentic communication that typically exists in ESL contexts, and difficulties with sequencing teaching-learning activities combine to hinder the development of writing skills. The paper suggests that writing teachers must understand that there is much more involved in writing than the final copy turned in by students. It recommends integrating reading and writing in ESL education, noting that reading and writing are interactive. Writing teachers must move beyond giving students a topic to write on and then grading the final product. They must include plenty of process work, from reading to writing, so students will progress from reading, to discussing and analyzing, to writing. Writing instruction is effective when contextualized through background reading related to real-life interests. This allows students to understand the purpose of the relationship between reading and writing. This integration allows educators to teach more effectively by dealing with reading and writing simultaneously and students to write more effectively in an authentic context. Reading strategies that students learn early in the process will become part of their writing strategies later on. (Contains 15 references.) (SM)
